Most smartphones today come equipped with a host of sensors. The screen Gyroscopes can measure the orientation of your phone. Accelerometers can determine how hard you’re hitting your keyboard. And, advanced haptics can even determine how hard you’re holding your phone. These factors come together to determine a person’s digital signature through what is called ‘kinetics’. “You take the fact that an individual is associated with a device and the individuals’ use of a device itself has a signature. And, you use that signature as a part of the claim that the individual is who they claim to be,” explained Bhat. Where do you draw the line? While multi-factor authentication could facilitate seamless transitions, companies will also have to determine where to draw the line since microphones and facial recognition are also factors than need to be taken into account. While they may be more efficient than other methods to authenticate a person’s identity, they end up falling on the other end of the privacy spectrum. “It’s going be a mix of human intelligence and machine intelligence, where the magic actually lies,” said Bhat. It’s not something that is used by payments platforms just yet, but it’s definitely something that’s on the horizon. “Soon enough, we’ll get to a place where seamless transactions and convenience will all be based on implicit multi-factors, from various different things,” said Sri Shivananda, senior vice president and chief technology officer at PayPal. The obstacles with OTPs go beyond security Until multi-factor authentication comes in, OTPs are still the best option that users have at their disposal. “There are other methods of secure communication that can happen. But, during the bridge, this is the best course that companies are able to take,” Shivananda explained. However, OTPs are not only a worry with respect to security as the hackers get cleverer but also with respect to transaction drop rate. “Does two-factor authentication improve the security and safety of a transaction — absolutely, yes. And, at the same time, does it add friction to it and does the conversion rate for a merchant actually drop — absolutely, yes,” he added. From the time that you initiate a transaction to when you complete it using an OTP there are many things that can go wrong. Network connectivity could fall through, you might enter the incorrect six-digit code, somebody might call you away in the middle of the lengthy process causing the transaction to time or you might simply, just lose interest. For now, payment companies like are using artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to track where potential attacks could emanate from. “Through what we call defence-in-depth and layered security, we apply protection on your device from within the app — on the network edge, rate-limiting infrastructure, the right kind of cryptographic infrastructure, and so on,” explained Shivananda. PayPal executives explain what comes after OTP — the way you type or hold your phone could be the 'digital signature' of the future

While the use of artificial intelligence (AI) might not slow down the clock, he feels that it will still help garner quicker responses and be more efficient at sniffing out fraudulent transactions. The art of social engineering Hackers aren’t trying to directly breach banking systems. Instead, they’re letting the customers do the work for them by tricking them into revealing their sensitive information. "Criminals are trying to fool banks into thinking they are new customers or stealing account access by tricking people into making security mistakes or giving away sensitive information. When they are successful, criminals are making use of real-time payments to move funds quickly through a maze of global accounts," explain McConaghy. According to FICO, 40% of Asian banks name social engineering as their number one concern when it comes to real-time payments fraud. "We have authorized push payment fraud, such as when a customer is tricked into paying what they think is a legitimate invoice like a fake school bill or payment to a tradesperson. This type of social engineering is harder to stop," said McConaghy. Others concerns that plague real-time payments are account takeovers, false accounts and money mules. According to McConaghy, better KYC, link analysis and behavioural analytics can help tackle the problem. The dark side of the internet Online fraud is only one problem. According to Asian banks, drug trafficking, human smuggling, tax evasion and terrorism also attracted the attention on real-time payments. Cross-border payments, in particular, are an issue. "To tackle fraud and money laundering schemes that exploit real-time money movement you need to leverage all the available technologies, automate as much as you can and introduce models that can identify outlier transactions and customer behaviour so your teams can spend their time investigating the riskiest of the red flags," said McConaghy. In order to tackle the misuse of real-time payments, more than 90% of Asian banks feel that convergence between their fraud and compliance functions would be helpful. How to find your stolen phone using CEIR

By Shakoor Rather New Delhi, Mar 4 () Scientists have developed a new digital security algorithm which they say can help prevent fraudulent online transactions by increasing the randomness in the generation of user-authenticity tests like one-time passwords (OTPs) and CAPTCHA. The algorithm, called BaReNPI, uses a software-based random number generator that makes it more difficult for cyber-attackers to crack compared to Advanced Encryption Standard 256 (AES 256) -- the current gold standard for electronic cryptographic encryption, the researchers said. Lead scientist Geetha G, from Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Punjab, explained that BaReNPI is named after its unique properties -- balancedness, resiliency, non-linearity, propagation, and immunity. "The main difference between our technology and the existing technologies are these properties. The existing technologies do not consider these five properties simultaneously, therefore, the outcomes of those technologies are application specific," Geetha told . The technology involves random number generation with symmetric properties which are required by the security algorithms for the development of ciphers, or algorithms for performing encryption or decryption, as suggested by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Geetha explained. She said that security algorithms like BaReNPI are used by messaging apps like WhatsApp and many signal programmes like VeraCrypt in addition to a range of hardware and other applications to transmit data securely. The need for such a system is not only applicable in India, it's a worldwide requirement to enhance the security of the existing ciphers by incorporating randomness in their features, the scientists said. Geetha noted that NIST, which is one of the premier bodies for standardising the security algorithms, has also urged for randomness in ciphers which can be used for internet traffic easily. "The security of internet surfing is primarily dependent upon security algorithms applied in transport layer. All such cryptographic security algorithms are facing the problem of cryptanalysis, and therefore their robustness is required to be enhanced with the help of such BaReNPI," she said. The researchers, including Rahul Saha and Gulshan Kumar, both Associate Professors at LPU, said that they have used properties of random numbers to develop a solution in the form of Symmetric Random Function Generator (SRFG) which brings randomness in the key generation process, thereby making their solution more efficient. Noting that the algorithm may help make the security algorithms better in terms of performance and resistance to cyber attacks, the LPU scientist said in the coming days of internet of things (IoT), BaReNPI may be very useful with various devices for generating OTPs. The scientists added that the SRFG offers three times better confusion property, which is the degree of ambiguity, and 53.7 per cent better avalanche effect -- a small change in input leading to a big change in output. According to the research, published in the journal Security and Communication Networks, this makes BaReNPI better than AES on key parameters like nonlinearity, resiliency, balancedness, propagation characteristics, and immunity. "In the current digital economy, computer system and network security are intended to achieve many purposes including confidentiality, authentication, non-repudiation and access control by the use of various security algorithms," Geetha said. "BaReNPI has opened the path for further improvement of these security algorithms which eventually leads to better digital security and more secure social and economic encounters," she said. The researchers added that web browser security algorithms can also be strengthened with BaReNPI. Novel algorithm may help prevent fraudulent online transactions

Three <keyword id="6418358" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Patents">patents</keyword> have been filed by a Gurgaon-based surface transport logistic provider ‘<keyword id="3156357" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rivigo">Rivigo</keyword>’ in the US for algorithms created by it. This is a rare instance when an Indian startup has filed a patent in the US. 
 Indian startups claim to spend millions on Research and Development but very few of them have filed for patents so as to protect the various technologies they developed in-house. In December last year, digital payments platform <keyword id="6377963" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Freecharge">Freecharge</keyword> had filed for patent for its authentication solutions, termed as 'On The Go Pin,' which is aimed at making both online as well as offline transactions faster, by cutting the delay caused in receiving the OTP through text message. 
Rivigo has come up with an algorithm that deals with managing fuel efficiency and pilferage, availability of drivers in the relay system, and loading plans to help reduce damages to products carried by its trucks. 
 "We have created very sophisticated technologies that have tried to solve multiple problems that currently exist. The algorithms allow us to get the most accurate fuel value, calibrate our fuel sensors and to detect pilferage. They take into account factors such as whether the vehicle is running or not, whether the ignition is off, or even when the network is down, and data may not have come in as yet," <keyword id="1010692" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hemant-Khandelwal">Hemant Khandelwal</keyword>, chief technology officer at Rivigo told ET. 
 
There are two other technologies for which patent have been filed by the company. One technology takes in account the geo-location and behavioural data to ensure the most suitable drivers are available for the truck run to go off smoothly. The other one is a 3D loading plan that ensures minimum damage to products being transported. 
 
With company filing patents, it is quite clear that it is trying to get into lucrative American market, and possibly licensing the same, providing it an additional revenue stream. 
 
"The solutions we are working on are globally applicable. At the right time in thefuture, we would aspire to take our offerings global. As we do, we want to protect our interests and that is why the need to file patents outside India," said Deepak Garg,CEO of Rivigo.

No more shying away from entering your pin details in front of offline merchants or strangers! 
 
Anyway, so here I got my FreeCharge Go card within no time and it looked exactly like a regular card we carry in our wallets today! 
 
 
 
Nice… The next thought is now what? Let’s try to do a transaction. But, how do we exactly use this, where and how will it help to use this card over a debit/credit card? A little bit of reading first would do no harm, I felt. After the research, I decided to get onto using this new little thing for a purchase. Though I began with skepticism quite honestly, but on the way I figured that there’s no algebra or geometry behind using it. It’s in fact used the same way we have been using an ICICI or HDFC or any other bank credit/debit card for that matter. One thing to remember, however, is this card is a PREPAID card, which means your Freecharge Wallet in the phone needs to have enough balance to cover the purchase you are making using your FreeCharge Go card. So, first add money to the Freecharge Wallet and then you are good to go. 
 
So, I headed straight to Flipkart and decided to purchase a watch for a friend who will be turning 28 this Sunday. Watch selected.. Address details added.. and now came the payment stage. I was required to choose the credit card option, copy the 16-digit card number and other details like CVV and expiry date. Now? 
 
 
 
That’s it. At this stage, I felt reassured that its usage procedure is almost same as the other cards, and it can be used on any online payment gateway that supports MasterCard. 
 
After the purchase, every transaction using the card needs to be verified by an OTP as a security measure, I had read up, which is sent to the registered mobile number. In about 30 seconds from the time I made the payment, I got mine too! 
 
Once verified, as per the offer valid for 21 and 22 January, I immediately received Rs 100 cash back in my FreeCharge Wallet on the total amount I paid. Wow, not bad at all! 
 
Another thing - The second time you use the card, the transaction merchant can ask the customer if they’d like them to take the address registered on FreeCharge, just like Facebook. So, it also does away with the problem of typing your details over and over again. 
 
Personally, I found it an extremely effective way of making payments as its doubly secure, seamless, hassle-free, attractive due to cashbacks and discounts, and can be used on all Indian websites and mobile apps. Moreover, one can also avail its benefits at offline stores as the mobile online wallet company has also introduced offline payments a few weeks ago in partnerships with Westlife Development Ltd, owner of the Master Franchisee of McDonald’s west and south India, and Shopper’s Stop. In this case, the customers paying offline need not have to give their pin but rather a changing OTP which is available at all times with or without network on the app. The firm is looking at more partnerships with the offline merchants in the coming months. 
 I think it’s time folks at <keyword id="143842" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mobikwik">MobiKwik</keyword> and <keyword id="6357120" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="PayTM">Paytm</keyword> pull up their socks, because boss FreeCharge Go card can be quite the gamechanger!
