<ul><li><keyword id="6355975" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="axis-bank">Axis Bank</keyword> has launched its own line of <keyword id="10907008" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="wearable-payment-devices">wearable payment devices</keyword> called ‘Wear N’ Play’ for ₹750 (around $10) a piece.</li><li>India’s largest banking institution, the <keyword id="6354731" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="state-bank-of-india">State Bank of India</keyword> (SBI), also launched its own wearable payments device in October last year called Titan Pay.</li><li>The launch of these devices comes on the heels of the <keyword id="6354335" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="reserve-bank-of-india">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> (RBI) increasing the limit for contactless transactions from ₹2,000 to ₹5,000.</li></ul>After the push on digital payments, Indian authorities now want <keyword id="2510649" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="contactless-payments">contactless payments</keyword> to be the new norm for India. And, the country’s banks are following suit. After the State Bank of India (SBI) launched Titan Pay in October last year, Axis Bank has now launched its own line of wearable payment devices called ‘Wear N’ Play’. “The wearables are directly linked to the customers’ bank account and function like a regular debit card,” said Axis Bank. On March 10, India’s third largest private bank launched a band, a key chain and a watch loop, which cost just ₹750 (around $10) apiece. <div type="image" title="image003(1)" msid="81443349" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Axis Bank&amp;#39;s new line of wearable contactless payments devices&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> Just as SBI collaborated with Titan, Axis Bank developed its devices in collaboration with Thales and Tappy Technologies. The new system should allow Axis Bank customers to make a transaction at any merchant who accepts contactless payments. The move comes within two months of the Reserve Bank of India (<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/finance/news/rbi-hikes-limit-for-contactless-card-payments-from-2000-to-5000/articleshow/79542969.cms">RBI</a>) announcing that it is raising the limit for contactless payments from ₹2,000 to ₹5,000. Leigh-Anne Galloway and Tim Yunusov from Cyber R&amp;D Lab showed how it was possible to bypass multi-factor authentication controls for tap-and-go transactions at a <a href="https://www.blackhat.com/asia-20/briefings/schedule/index.html#first-contact---vulnerabilities-in-contactless-payments-19359">Black Hat Asia</a> event in October 2020. They were able to devise various ways to get around payment limits. The bigger threat is to data privacy. Contactless systems collect an immense amount of data from users and that data can be used to track a person’s movements. While the systems themselves may be secure, all it would take is one wrong download or malware to sneak on to a user’s smartphone to gain access to whatever part of that data is stored on the device. How do wearable payment devices work? Wearables typically use near-field communication (NFC) or radio frequency identification (RFID) technology in order to link the device to a customer’s credit or debit card. This eliminates the need for them to touch public surfaces or the physical point of sale (POS) terminals. The NFC technology only gets activated when there is a minimal distance between the payment terminal and the wearable. Using chip-enabled cards to make the same transaction takes around 45 seconds, but wearables can undercut that time and pull a transaction through in just 10 to 15 seconds. According to global research firm <a href="https://assets.kpmg/content/dam/kpmg/in/pdf/2020/08/impacting-digital-payments-in-india.pdf">KPMG</a>, contactless payments are a key growth factor for digital payments in India going forward. After SBI, Axis Bank launches its own line of wearable payment devices that only cost $10 a piece

In a recent move, <keyword id="6354335" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="reserve-bank-of-india">Reserve bank of India</keyword> has provided a sigh of relief to people who are very lazy when it comes to waiting and providing OTPs during a digital transaction. The <keyword id="30067" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="RBI">RBI</keyword> has relaxed two-factor authentication for online payments below Rs 2,000. 
 This move by RBI was made to make things easier for cab aggregators like Uber and Ola and other online merchants to accept cards. The RBI's insistence on a second factor authentication (in the form of a one-time password, or <keyword id="510437" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="OTP">OTP</keyword>) had prompted cab aggregators to tie up with digital wallets like Paytm. While customers can even now pay by card, they need to wait for a text message containing the OTP before concluding the transaction. 
 
However, In future, if they agree to register with the merchant, they can complete the payment by entering a password authenticated by the card network. 
 
Customers opting for this facility will go through a one-time registration process, requiring entry of card details and additional factor authentication by the issuing bank. In this model, the card details already registered would be the first factor while the network-provided password would be the additional factor of authentication. 
 
Earlier, RBI relaxed the second factor authentication requirement for transactions in shops using near field communication (NFC) or contactless cards. 
 
“There had been a representation from the industry to relax the two-factor authentication norms for low-value transactions,” Vijay Jasuja, MD &amp; CEO, SBI Cards, told ET. 
 According to the RBI circular, it has been receiving requests from certain segments of the industry for reviewing the requirement of additional factor authentication for low-value online card-not-present (<keyword id="6452151" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="CNP">CNP</keyword>) transactions. 
 
The RBI said that it was not happy with merchant-specific solutions as an alternative. But a solution by card networks (Visa ,MasterCard, RuPay) is expected to meet the objective of customer convenience with sufficient security for low-value transactions. 
 
"This is a very elegant solution as it will prevent dropout of transactions without diluting the security of the payment architecture," said TR Ramachandran, country head, Visa.

No OTP for transactions less than Rs 2,000: RBI

At AGS' innovation centre in Mumbai, intelligent ATMs have been designed with a gold coin dispensing facility; with the gold coin being issued along with a certificate of authenticity . 
 
"We've put in elaborate security measures in place, including firewalls, server clamping, ATM shutdown, to ensure our ATMs are 100% secure,"Ravi Goyal, chairman &amp; MD, AGS told ET. 
 
Even an account can be opened with the help of the modern age ATM machines using a selfservice module. The device offers a video conferencing facility and enables scrutiny of mandatory KYC documents. 
 Instants loans with a cap of Rs 50,000 can also be approved at the new ATMs. "Cross-selling of products like granting of loans is something that is very easily doable and our ATMs have the capability. It's the underwriting and credit checks that needs to be in place from the banks' end," said <keyword id="79017" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chandrasekhar">Chandrasekhar</keyword>, presi dent-services, Electronic Payment and Services.

ATM makers are already running pilot projects and are also in talks with India banks. India's regulatory framework does not permit the dispensation of forex except at select exchange outlets and at designated bank branches in India.

IBM and Simplilearn to extend collaboration upskill over 20,000 professionals

Pharmaceutical companies <keyword id="44612" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pfizer">Pfizer</keyword> and <keyword id="3124139" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BioNTech">BioNTech</keyword> on Wednesday announced that their Covid-19 <keyword id="24209" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="vaccine">vaccine</keyword> -- BNT162b2 -- demonstrated 100 per cent efficacy and robust antibody responses in a Phase 3 trial in <keyword id="6381562" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Adolescents">adolescents</keyword> between 12 to 15 years old. The Phase 3 <keyword id="122283" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Clinical-trial">clinical trial</keyword> enrolled 2,260 adolescents aged between 12 to 15 years old in the US. "We share the urgency to expand the authorisation of our vaccine to use in younger populations and are encouraged by the clinical trial data from adolescents between the ages of 12 and 15," Albert Bourla, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Pfizer, said in a statement. In the trial, 18 cases of Covid-19 were observed in the placebo group (n=1,129) versus none in the vaccinated group (n=1,131). Vaccination with BNT162b2 elicited SARS-CoV-2-neutralising antibody geometric mean titres (GMTs) of 1,239.5, demonstrating strong immunogenicity in a subset of adolescents one month after the second dose. This compared well (was non-inferior) to GMTs elicited by participants aged 16 to 25 years old (705.1 GMTs) in an earlier analysis. Further, BNT162b2 administration was well tolerated, with side effects generally consistent with those observed in participants 16 to 25 years of age. The BNT162b2 has not been approved or licensed by the <keyword id="6356255" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="us-food-and-drug-administration">US Food and Drug Administration</keyword> (FDA), but has been authorised for <keyword id="9156702" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="emergency-use">emergency use</keyword> by FDA under an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) to prevent Covid-19 for use in individuals 16 years of age and older. Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine shows 100% efficacy in 12-15 yrs old

Pakistan will buy <keyword id="31653" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="sugar">sugar</keyword> and cotton from India, newly appointed Finance Minister Hammad <keyword id="8402" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Azhar">Azhar</keyword> announced on Wednesday, lifting a ban on their import from the neighbouring country imposed in the wake of heightened tension over Kashmir in 2019. The decision was taken at the meeting of the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC), which was chaired by Finance Minister Azhar. Azhar said that the meeting discussed 21 items on the agenda, including import of cotton and sugar from India, which it allowed after detailed discussion. The resumption of import of these goods will lead to partial revival of bilateral trade relations, which were suspended after the August 5, 2019 decision of India to revoke the special status of Jammu and Kashmir. The private sector was allowed to import 5 lakh tonnes of white sugar from India, he said. He also said that the government had allowed sugar to be imported from other countries, however, the price of the commodity in other countries was also high. "However, in our neighbouring country India, the price of sugar is quite cheap," he said. "Hence, we have decided to resume sugar trade with India". Azhar also said that Pakistan will import cotton from India starting June this year. Adviser to the <keyword id="71" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Prime-Minister">Prime Minister</keyword> of Pakistan for Commerce and Investment, Dawood welcomed the decisions taken by the ECC. "All steps be taken through cross-border imports of cotton yarn including by land. A summary will be presented at the next ECC to ensure availability of cotton and yarn in the coming months," Dawood tweeted. Finance Minister Azhar told the media that demand for cotton in Pakistan was increasing but it had not produced quality cotton last year hence it had given the green signal for the product to be imported from other countries. "The import of cotton from India was banned and this had a direct effect on our SMEs," he said. "However, at the recommendation of the <keyword id="137756" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ministry-of-Commerce">Ministry of Commerce</keyword>, we have also decided to resume the trade of cotton with India," he added.  3 months extension given to link Aadhaar with PAN card The government’s latest announcement on the subject says the last date to link Aadhaar card with PAN card is extended for three more months from <a href="https://www.businesstoday.in/current/economy-politics/pan-aadhaar-linking-deadline-extended-by-3-months-to-march-31/story/392888.html">December 31, 2019 to March 31, 2020</a>. This is the second time that the government is extending this deadline so that the users are given enough time to complete the task. Those that have not purchased FASTag will have to pay two times the toll charges All private and commercial vehicles running on the Indian roads must purchase FASTags. The government earlier extended the December 1, 2019 deadline to December 15, 2019 for the vehicle owners to ensure compliance. Failing to do so and driving through the toll lanes without FASTag affixed to your car windshield, will mean you will be paying twice the toll charge. These are rechargeable tags that will enable automatic deduction of toll charges from your linked bank account as you can avoid long queues at the toll plazas. SBI’s chip debit cards will only work in the New Year 2020 SBI had earlier asked its customers to change their magnetic stripe debit cards with EMV chip and PIN-based SBI debits cards.
