According to the report, the edtech company has a revenue-sharing agreement with Disney — which could range between 10%-15%. The deal is expected to benefit both companies since Byju’s was seeking to also become a ‘content-driven platform’ aimed at a younger audience — kids of three to seven years of age are Osmo’s target market. While Byju’s apps mostly target school kids across grades 4-12 Byju’s eponymous founder Byju Raveendran <a href="https://news.crunchbase.com/news/in-international-push-indian-edtech-company-byju-buys-osmo-for-120m/">told</a> Crunchbase the company currently has over 1,000 people dedicated to video and game development. Other Indian unicorns in the league eyeing global expansion India’s growing unicorns are now aggressively looking to test overseas markets, keen to have a global presence, and many have already seen some success. The homegrown food delivery unicorn, Zomato, expanded internationally in 2012, starting with Dubai. Since then, the company has grown multifold with an array of acquisitions. Online tutoring startup Byju’s is the latest Indian ‘unicorn’ going global

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Nvidia's gaming past and mastering of the GPU made it well-positioned for the AI boom.</li><li>Its next market to corner is advanced robotics that could give way to humanoids.</li></ul>Wearing his signature black leather jacket, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/business-bromance-nvidia-jensen-huang-mark-zuckerberg-siggraph-2024-7">Jensen Huang</a> outstretched both arms, gesturing at the humanoid robots flanking him, and the audience applauded. "About my size," he joked from the stage at <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jensen-huang-robots-r2d2-c3po-star-wars-nvidia-2024-9">Computex 2024</a> in Taipei, Taiwan, in June."Robotics is here. Physical AI is here. This is not science fiction," he said. The robots though, were flat, generated on a massive screen. What came onto the stage were wheeled machines resembling <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/doordash-delivery-robots-starship-technologies-2017-3">delivery robots</a>.Robots are a big part of Huang's vision of the future, which is shared by other tech luminaries, including <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-says-two-optimus-humanoid-robots-working-in-factory-autonomously-2024-6">Elon Musk</a>. In addition to the Computex display, humanoid robots have come up on Nvidia's last two <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jensen-huang-robots-r2d2-c3po-star-wars-nvidia-2024-9">earnings calls</a>.Most analysts agree that Nvidia's fate is all but sealed for a few years. Demand for graphics processing units has fueled it to a<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nvidia-ai-3-trillion-club-apple-microsoft-jensen-huang-2024-6"> $3 trillion market capitalization</a> — some days. But the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-taiwan-china-chip-war-2024-6">semiconductor industry is cruel.</a> Investment in data centers, which make up 87% of Nvidia's revenue comes in booms and busts. Nvidia needs another big market.At Computex, Huang said there would be two "high-volume" robotic products in the future. The first is self-driving cars and the second is likely to be humanoid robots. Thanks to machine learning the technologies are converging.Both machines require human-like perception of fast-changing surroundings and instantaneous reactions with little room for error. They also both require immense amounts of what Huang sells: AI computing power. But robotics is a tiny portion of Nvidia's revenue today. And growing it isn't just a matter of time.If Nvidia's place in the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nvidia-ai-3-trillion-club-apple-microsoft-jensen-huang-2024-6">tech stratosphere</a> is to be permanent, Huang needs the market for robotics to be big. Though the story of Nvidia's last few years has been one of incredible engineering, foresight, and timing, the challenge to make robots real may be even tougher.<h2 id="48af91f2-ff7b-4976-9a95-fea6d922ba9f">How can Nvidia bring on the robots?</h2>AI presents a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vcs-like-khosla-and-a16z-backing-robotics-that-use-ai-2024-7">massive unlock for robotics.</a> But scaling the field means making the engineering and building more accessible."Robotic AI is the most complicated because a large language model is software, but robots are a mechanical engineering problem, a software problem, and a physics problem. It's much more complicated," said <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-data-center-demand-nvidia-databank-2024-8">Raul Martynek</a>, CEO of data center landlord Databank.Most of the people working on robotics are experts with doctoral degrees in robotics because they have to be. The same was true of language-based AI 10 years ago. Now that foundation models and computing to support them are widely available, it doesn't take a doctorate to build AI applications.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nvidia-cuda-software-gpu-ai-chips-cerebras-ipo-2024-6#:~:text=Since%20CUDA%20is%20perhaps%20the,Nvidia%20is%20worth%20the%20fight.">Layers of software</a> and vast language and image libraries are intended to make users stickier and lower the barrier to entry so that almost anyone can build with AI.Nvidia's robotics stack needs to do the same, but since using AI in physical spaces is harder, making it work for laymen is also harder.The Nvidia robotics stack takes some navigating. It's a sea of platforms, libraries, and names.Omniverse is a simulation platform. It offers a virtual world that developers can customize and use to test simulations of robots. "Isaac" is what Nvidia calls a "gym" built on top of Omniverse. It's how you put your robot into an environment and practice tasks."Jetson Thor" is Nvidia's chip for powering robots. Project Groot, which the company refers to as a "moonshot" initiative, is a foundation model for humanoid robots. In July, the company launched a synthetic data generation service and "<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://nvidianews.nvidia.com/news/nvidia-accelerates-worldwide-humanoid-robotics-development">Osmo</a>," a software layer that ties it all together.Huang often touts that humanoids are easier to build because the world is already made for humans."The easiest robot to adapt in the world are humanoid robots because we built the world for us," he said at Computex. "There's more data to train these robots because we have the same physique," Huang said.Gathering data about how we move still takes time, effort, and money. Tesla, for example, is paying people $48 per hour to perform tasks in a special suit to train its <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-job-training-optimus-robot-motion-capture-suit-2024-8">humanoid, Optimus</a>."That's been the biggest problem in robotics — how much data is needed to give those foundational models an understanding of the world and adjust for it," said <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-this-engineer-hacked-her-career-and-became-a-gm-at-microsoft-2018-2">Sophia Velastegui</a>, an AI expert who's worked for Apple, Google, and Microsoft.But, analysts see the potential. Research firm William Blair's analysts recently wrote, "Nvidia's capabilities in robotics and digital twins (with Omniverse) have the potential to scale into massive businesses themselves." The analysts expect Nvidia's automotive business to grow 20% annually through 2027.Nvidia has announced that BMW uses Isaac and Omniverse to train factory robots. Boston Dynamics, BYD Electronics, Figure, Intrinsic, Siemens, and Teradyne Robotics use Nvidia's stack to build robot arms, humanoids, and other robots.But three robotics experts told Business Insider that so far, Nvidia has failed to lower the barrier to entry for want-to-be robot builders as it has in language and image-based AI. Competitors are coming in to try to open up the ideal stack for robotics before Nvidia can dominate that too."We recognize that developing AI that can interact with the physical world is extremely challenging. That's why we developed an entire platform to help companies train and deploy robots," a Nvidia spokesperson told Business Insider via email.In July, the company launched a humanoid robot developer program. After submitting a successful application developers can access all of these tools.<h2 id="54d5849a-4e51-475e-b8c8-bccca9f22c1e">Nvidia can't do it alone</h2>Ashish Kapoor is acutely aware of all the progress the field has yet to make. For 17 years he was a leader in Microsoft's robotics research department. There, he helped to develop Airsim, a computer vision simulation platform launched in 2017 that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-shutters-project-airsim-ai-strategy-openai-2023-10">sunsetted last year</a>.Kapoor left with the shutdown to make his own platform. Last year, he founded Scaled Foundations and launched Grid, a robotic development platform designed for aspiring robot builders.No one company can solve the tough problems of robotics alone, Kapoor said."The way I've seen it happen in AI, the actual solution came from the community when they worked on something together. That's when the magic started to happen, and this needs to happen in robotics right now," Kapoor said.It feels like every player aiming for humanoid robots is in it for themselves, Kapoor said. But, there's a robotics startup graveyard for a reason. The robots get into real-world scenarios and they are simply not good enough. Customers give up on them before they can get better."The running joke is that every robot has a team of 10 people trying to run it," Kapoor said.Grid offers a free tier or a managed service that offers more help. Scaled Foundations is building its own foundation model for robotics, but also encourages users to develop one too.Some elements of Nvidia's robotics stack are open source. And Huang often touts that Nvidia is working with every robotics and AI company on the planet, but some developers fear the juggernaut will protect its own success first, and support the ecosystem second."They're doing the Apple effect. To me, they're trying to lock you in as much as they can into their ecosystem," said Jonathan Stephens, chief developer advocate at computer vision firm EveryPoint.An Nvidia spokesperson told BI that this perception is inaccurate. The company "collaborates with the majority of the leading players in the robotics and humanoid developer ecosystem," to help them deploy robots faster. "Our success comes from the ecosystem," they said. Scaled Foundations and Nvidia aren't the only ones working on a foundation model for robotics. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vcs-like-khosla-and-a16z-backing-robotics-that-use-ai-2024-7">Skild AI </a>raised $300 million in July to build its version.<h2 id="973ca613-a524-4878-942d-bb11cf703d83">What makes a humanoid?</h2>Simulators are an essential stop on the path to humanoid robots, but they don't necessarily lead to human-like perception.When describing a robotic arm at Computex, Huang said that Nvidia supplies "the computer, the acceleration layers, and the pre-trained AI models" needed to put an AI robot into an AI factory. The goal of using robotic arms in factories at scale has been around for decades. Robotic arms have been <a target="_blank" href="https://spectrum.ieee.org/unimation-robot">building cars since 1961</a>. But Huang was talking about an AI robot — an intelligent robot.The arms that build cars are largely unintelligent. They are programmed to perform repetitive tasks and often "see" with sensors instead of cameras.An AI-enabled robotic arm would be able to handle varied tasks — picking up diverse items and putting them down in diverse places without breaking them, maybe while on the move. They need to be able to perceive objects and guardrails and then make moves in a coherent order. But a humanoid robot is a world away from even the most useful non-humanoid. Some roboticists doubt that it's the right target to aim for."I'm very skeptical. The cost to make a humanoid robot and to make it versatile is going to be higher than if you make a robot that doesn't look like a human and can only do a single task but does the task well and faster," said a former Nvidia robotics expert with more than 15 years in the field, who asked to remain anonymous.But Huang is all in."I think Jensen has an obsession with robots because, ultimately, what he's trying to do is create the future," Martynek said.Gaming and graphics aren't Nvidia's future anymore. Autonomous cars and robotics are. The company told BI it expects everything to be autonomous in the future starting with robotic arms and vehicles and leading to buildings and even cities."I was at Apple when we developed iPad inspired by Star Trek and other future worlds in movies," Velastegui said. Robotics tap into our imagination, she explained.

Two-three years later, the percentage revenue they get from the US market could be sizeable. It would not be more than 50% or more than Indian market. In the long term, it may happen that Byju's is getting more revenue from outside India.” -- Devendra Agrawal, founder, Dexter Capital A dream so big, it may need bigger deals Acquisitions are usually done for three reasons. First, to enter new geographies. Second, to incorporate new services or products into business offerings. Third, to eliminate a disruptor that could be a potential threat to the company in the long run. “Because of all three reasons, Byju's will continue to acquire new players…,” Agrawal told Business Insider. The organic way of doing so, by building a team and hiring people, may actually take a couple of years. The inorganic way, by acquiring companies, can help speed up the process of scaling up. Madhur Singhal, managing partner and chief executive officer (CEO) at consulting firm Praxis Global, explained that the company’s expansion largely depends on how well the company develops an empirically grounded model of technology and capability that taps the market opportunity with cross-selling into customers of acquisitions they are making. “If this strategy comes right, it could result in bigger and faster outcomes,” he added. While the global market will make up a third of Byju's revenue, India will continue to be the biggest market for the edtech company due to the massive growth of its core product in two to three years, Kishore emphasised. The recent acquisition of the test preparation chain Aakash Educational Services, which has over 200 coaching centres across India, is going to accelerate the company’s growth in India as well. The edtech giant on Wednesday, July 21, announced that it plans to invest $1 billion in the North American market to accelerate its growth in the next two years. BYJU’s has flagged off its American expansion plan with the acquisition of US-based digital reading platform Epic, which focuses on kids under the age of 12, for $500 million. Epic runs on a subscription model that gives classrooms and families unlimited access to thousands of books, videos and quizzes. The seven-year-old American startup, founded by Suren Markosian and Kevin Donahue in 2013, has a user base of two million teachers and 50 million kids registered on the platform. The company claims to have doubled its user base from 20 million kids pre-COVID. Epic has raised about $50 million to date from institutional investors like Creative Artists Agency, Evolution Media and Reach Capital. This acquisition of Epic is in line with the plan that BYJU’s founder and chief executive officer (CEO) Byju Raveendran described in an <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qIe5VhDvJXU">interview </a>with Business Insider in November last year. <div type="ExtQuote" text="“It’s very different how kids learn at different level — at individual level, subject level, age level or grade level — so what we have done is that for a lot of these early-age group level we have used a lot of these movie-like or game-like interaction to make sure that they get interested in the subject. The company wanted to remove all the barriers between a book and a child, and help them find the right books so that every child will be excited about reading. “And so we've built this platform where children can independently discover any book or any content they like to read. The platform makes it a lot of fun to read, and a lot of 100 discoveries, new books, or kids love using it,” Markosian said. Last year, around one billion books were read on Epic’s platform. BYJU’s looks to go big in the US market The Indian business will continue to make money from the recently-acquired Aakash, which has a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/startups/news/heres-why-byjus-may-want-to-spend-a-billion-dollars-on-acquiring-aakash-educational-services/articleshow/80243456.cms">network of 200 coaching</a> institutes bought for $1 billion in <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/byjus-closes-its-deal-with-aakash-educational-services-for-nearly-1-billion/articleshow/81912772.cms">April 2021</a>. The offering was launched last month, with 11,000 female teachers. For this venture, WhiteHat Jr has also stepped foot outside of its traditional coding for kids offering to introduce Maths. WhiteHat Jr’s CEO and founder Karan Bajaj has been heading this vertical and will introduce other offerings Science, English, fine arts and music classes soon. Taking a step forward, BYJU’s has also launched its learning app featuring Disney characters to the US last month. The company had also acquired educational game system Osmo two-years-ago, which has now scaled about four-times, as per the pressnote by BYJU’s. Kishore further added that BYJU’s will be clocking in more than $300 million in revenue from the US market alone in the financial year 2022. Of this, BYJU’s Future School will be clocking in about $100 million+ in revenue, Epic would add another $100 million+ to it and Osmo doing another $100 million+. Notably, BYJU’s is currently the most valued edtech startup in the world and the highest valued Indian startup. The company has garnered the interest from marquee investors like Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative, Sequoia Capital India, Silver Lake, Tencent, Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB), General Atlantic, Tiger Global, Qatar Investment Authority and many more. Over time, he recognized something both ironic and worrisome.There were no tech products in the room. "They were very proud of their wooden blocks from Germany," Sharma told Business Insider in a recent interview. However, he knew how much his daughter loved any screen that was put in front of her, and thought there had to be room for a positive piece of technology in her life. With his experience combining the analog and digital worlds for Google Books, ideas started to bubble up. And so, in 2013, Osmo was born- with the help of his co-founder and fellow Googler, Jerome Scholler.The big idea: A proprietary hardware accessory that snaps onto any iPad, using mirrors to connect the movements a child makes on a physical game board with animations on the tablet's screen. Osmo recently added certain games to be compatible with Android and Amazon Fire tablets as well. Five years later, the Osmo device can be found in 30,000 schools and a half-million households worldwide. The company has raised over $38 million, has more than 60 employees, and last week announced the release of its 14th game, "Detective Agency" - inspired by the popular 90s board game, "Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?" Osmo's games are geared towards children between the ages of three and nine and can range in price from $19 to $100. The hardware piece for tablets costs $29. Osmo, the company, has raised over $38 million in venture capital financing, and has more than 60 employees<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">OsmoOsmo's latest game, "Detective Agency"</div></div></div><h2>Time well spent</h2>Osmo's magic lies in the strength of its games, says SharmaOne game called "Monsters" prompts kids to draw objects (like a magic wand), and once their drawing is complete, a replica appears on the screen being used by the animated monster. Another, called "Coding Awbie" - which the company says is "easiest way to introduce coding to your child" - allows kids to create commands for their on-screen character by snapping different combinations of blocks together. Sharma says he understands the hesitation of parents, especially parents in Silicon Valley, to expose their children to too much screen time. "At a young age, you don't want to make them addicted to media," Sharma tells us. "If I'm a three-year-old and someone gives me a choice between Coke or milk, I'll drink Coke all day long. Children don't have that differentiation of what's good for them."<h2>Active screen time</h2>But Sharma argues that not all screen time is equal. He tells us there's a difference between passive screen time (where a child is merely sitting in front of a screen, watching) and active screen time (where a child is called to engage). Omso prides itself on creating active screen time for children. "At Osmo, everything has to be active. You have to engage, otherwise there's no experience," Sharma explains. "A screen doesn't change unless you do something - that's a very fundamental thing. By design, Osmo makes you do things." Osmo - which Sharma describes as a "child's first console" - also considers the length of time children spend on a game in a single sitting. It tries to limits each session to around 30 minutes. Internally, he explains, the company is less concerned with "time spent" as a metric to determine a game's effectiveness and more interested in "puzzles solved."<h2>The future of Osmo</h2>In the future, Osmo wants to allow for a more personalized experience for children, recommending games for them based on areas of learning where they could use improvements. "My daughter is in 4th grade, and I actually don't know what her weak points are," Sharma tells us. He imagines most parents feel the same way and believes Osmo is the perfect platform to help. As a first-time CEO, Sharma tells us that the hardest and most exciting part of his job thus far has been learning how to be a leader. "We are a very diverse team and leading them has been an interesting experience," he says. "You can lead engineers, you can lead designers, you can lead business people, but leading them all - it's always challenging for anyone starting a company." Sharma says his favorite moment thus far leading Osmo came with the launch of its latest game. "'[Detective Agency]' is the first product where I had zero contributions," Sharma told us. Black Friday is a great time to pick up a new camera - here are best deals on DSLRs, action cams, drones, and more

New Delhi, Dec 17 () Online education startup BYJU'S has reduced its loss to Rs 8.82 crore, while registering manifold in revenue from operations, according to regulatory documents.
Think &amp; Learn Pvt Ltd, the entity that runs BYJU'S, reduced its loss to Rs 8.82 crore in the fiscal ended March 2019 from a loss of Rs 37.15 crore in FY18, documents sourced by Paper.vc showed.
Revenue from operations also increased to Rs 1,305.92 crore in FY19 from Rs 471.18 crore in FY18, it added.
Its total income increased to Rs 1,366.98 crore in FY19 from Rs 500.21 crore in the previous financial year, the document showed.
In a statement, BYJU'S said its net revenue increased from Rs 490 crore in FY17-18 to Rs 1,341 crore with a net profit of Rs 20 crore in FY18-19. 
Its gross revenue increased from Rs 520 crore to Rs 1,480 crore.
The company statement said deeper penetration across India and significant growth in the number of paid subscribers have been the primary drivers of growth. 
In January this year, BYJU'S also forayed into the US with the acquisition of Osmo, the US-based learning platform.
"We have exceeded our financial goals that we set at the beginning of the year. Expanding our base across smaller towns and cities and introducing new products have been pivotal to our growth," BYJU'S Chief Operating Officer Mrinal Mohit said.
He added that the company's performance is a reflection of the increasing acceptance and adoption of digital learning across India. 
"With 60 per cent of our students based outside the metros, the aspiration and need for quality learning has never been higher," he said. 
Mohit said in the current financial year, the company is on track to double its revenue to Rs 3,000 crore. 
"We will also be launching BYJU'S Online Tutoring which will further accelerate growth and profitability in the coming year," he said.
Besides, the company is also planning to reach out to deeper parts of India by launching programs in vernacular languages. 
"We have always focused on sustainable growth and our efforts will continue to be on creating learning experiences that will help students become better learners. Being the world's most valuable edtech company today, we strongly believe that we have the capability to create a global product that can revolutionize learning for students across the world," he said.
BYJU'S had USD 540 million (Rs 3,865 crore) in funding in December last year. In April this year, the Naspers-backed company had crossed Rs 200 crore in monthly revenue.
Currently, its learning programmes are available in English and Hindi. It has over 40 million registered users and 2.8 million paid subscribers. SR

That's according to Sue Fletcher-Watson, a developmental psychologist at the University of Edinburgh.Fletcher-Watson has criticised screen time as an umbrella term which puts the focus on how much children use devices, but not what they're doing.The Guardian <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/education/2016/dec/25/screen-based-lifestyle-harms-health-of-children" target="_blank">recently published a letter</a> signed by child development and education experts linking a "screen-based lifetime" with the "decline in outdoor play" and spiralling rates of child obesity.The letter's signatories include Susan Greenfield, who has been <a href="http://deevybee.blogspot.co.uk/2014/09/why-most-scientists-dont-take-susan.html">criticised by fellow scientists</a> for claiming a link between autism and technology use.But Fletcher-Watson says there's little evidence to connect these factors, and that the concept of screen time is flawed. Her <a href="http://www.dart.ed.ac.uk/guardian_letter/">takedown of the letter drew praise from her peers</a>, and she was one of 50 signatories to <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/science/head-quarters/2017/jan/06/screen-time-guidelines-need-to-be-built-on-evidence-not-hype" target="_blank">a second letter to the Guardian</a> calling for better evidence."Ask someone what screen time was in the 80s, and they would probably think about watching TV," she told Business Insider. "But screen time now is interactive time - those fine motor movements of your fingers are developmentally important."What children are doing now with screen time is profoundly different."She notes that screen time comprises everything from watching TV passively to looking up information on Wikipedia, and most of these activities are not inherently bad. "If a child is alone in their room, looking at stuff online, the assumption is they might be looking at porn or being cyber-bullied," said Fletcher-Watson. "Actually, you might be having a nice chat with a friend or looking up something for your homework."Her views are supported by <a href="http://eprints.lse.ac.uk/66927/1/Policy%20Brief%2017-%20Families%20%20Screen%20Time.pdf">a report last year from the London School of Economics</a> examining emerging research into the area. The paper argues that parents are wrongly focusing on screen time, and should instead look at how screens block or facilitate relationships. One <a href="http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0747563214003227#">oft-cited study</a> published in 2014 claimed to demonstrate that children who spent five days without their devices showed better interpersonal skills.But Fletcher-Watson noted flaws with the study - like the fact scientists testing the children knew which ones had spent five days without their devices, and which ones hadn't."You can have researchers introducing bias within their own studies, looking to find a pattern they believe is there," she said.The Guardian's letter called for national guidelines on screen time. Fletcher-Watson isn't opposed to better guidance, but thinks it should take a positive tone."I would favour some positive recommendations, more like the five-a-day advice," she said. "If the government makes recommendations, it should be to help children to have some time outside, some time doing sport and some time when they're alone and quiet during the week."But she added: "The screen time debate will blow over.
