<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>AP</span></p><p class="caption">Oracle executive chairman and CTO Larry Ellison</p></div><p></p></div></div>Oracle just reported its Q1 2016 earnings and we're sifting through them now.</p><p>It reported: </p><p class="bullets_li"> </p><ul><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">FQ1 EPS of $0.53 thats a 1 cent beat. </span></li><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Revenue of $8.45 billion, that's a miss by $80 million (down 1.7% year over year.)</span></li></ul><p> </p><p>Analysts were not expecting Oracle to have a particularly stellar quarter. They were projecting a flat to slight decline in sales and a 10 cent drop in EPS.</p><p>Oracle has had some bumpy earnings of late, missing sales expectations in five of the past six quarters, <a href="http://www.marketwatch.com/story/what-to-watch-for-in-oracles-earnings-2015-09-14">MarketWatch reports</a>. The strengthening of the U.S. dollar compared to foreign currencies had a significant impact on results in the quarter. Total Revenues were $8.4 billion, down 2% in U.S. dollars but up 7% in constant currency. Cloud plus On-Premise Software Revenues were $6.5 billion, down 2% in U.S. dollars and up 6% in constant currency. Total Cloud Revenues were $611 million, up 29% in U.S. dollars and up 34% in constant currency. Cloud software as a service (SaaS) and platform as a service (PaaS) revenues were $451 million, up 34% in U.S. dollars and up 38% in constant currency. Cloud infrastructure as a service (IaaS) revenues were $160 million, up 16% in U.S. dollars and up 23% in constant currency. Total On-Premise Software Revenues were $5.8 billion, down 4% in U.S. dollars but up 4% in constant currency. Total Hardware Revenues were $1.1 billion, down 3% in U.S. dollars but up 6% in constant currency. Total Services Revenues were $862 million, up 1% in U.S. dollars and up 10% in constant currency.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">Operating Income was $2.7 billion and Operating Margin was 31%. Non-GAAP Operating Income was $3.5 billion and non-GAAP Operating Margin was 41%. Net Income was $1.7 billion while non-GAAP Net Income was $2.3 billion. Earnings Per Share was $0.40, while non-GAAP Earnings Per Share was $0.53. Without the impact of the U.S. dollar strengthening compared to foreign currencies, Oracle's reported Q1 GAAP and non-GAAP Earnings Per Share would have been 6 cents higher.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">Short-term deferred revenues were $9.1 billion, up 2% in U.S. dollars and up 10% in constant currency compared with a year ago. Operating cash flow on a trailing twelve-month basis was $13.5 billion.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"Our traditional on-premise software business plus our new cloud business grew at a combined rate of 6% in constant currency," said Oracle CEO, Safra Catz. "This growth is being driven by new SaaS and PaaS annual recurring cloud subscription contracts which almost tripled in the quarter. As our cloud business scales-up, we plan to double our SaaS and PaaS cloud margins over the next two years -- starting from 40% this just completed Q1, to approximately 60% this coming Q4, and then on up to 80% two years from now. Oracle beats on profits misses on revenue

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div>Oracle just report its first-quarter fiscal 2015 earnings its another miss:</p>
<p>$0.62 EPS versus expectations of $0.64.</p>
<p>Revenue of $8.06 billion versus expectations of $8.77 billion.</p>
<p>And it just shocked to the world by reporting that co-founder Larry Ellison is stepping down as CEO.</p>
<p>He was the longest sitting CEO in Silicon Valley and gave no indications that he had planned to retire anytime soon.</p>
<p>Oracle will hand the role over to a pair of executives: Safra Catz, formerly a president and CFO will be co-CEO. Mark Hurd, also a president, is now the co-CEO. Ellison will be on the board as executive chairman and he's taking on the title of CTO. </p>
<p>Analysts were expecting a modest increase in both revenue and profit. Their expectations of $8.77 billion in revenue and $.64 earnings per share profit compares to $8.38 billion in revenue and $.59 EPS for the year ago quarter.</p>
<p>In its last fiscal year, Oracle steadily grew revenues and profits, but mostly disappointed Wall Street by not growing as them as much as Street wanted. The last time it reported earnings was for its fourth quarter, 2014, usually its best quarter as salespeople push to close deals to make their annual quotas. But for the second year in a row, it missed expectations. A fourth quarter miss would have unheard of just a few years ago.</p>
<p>However, Oracle says that, like it's competitors, it is overhauling itself to sell more of its software as a cloud service, on a subscription basis. When its customers buy software through the cloud, instead of license it and install it on their own computers, they pay less up front and more over time. Oracle told analysts that this will affect its revenue in the short term.</p>
<p>Therefore, Wall Street is looking for a progress report on Oracle's cloud sales. It's also looking for solid sales of Oracle's bread-and-butter product, the database, as well as good news from Oracle's hardware business, which, after a long, harsh decline, recently started growing again.</p>

Total Software plus Cloud revenue was up 6% to $6.6 billion. Software-as-a-service (SaaS) and Platform-as-a-service (PaaS) cloud revenue was up 32% to $337 million. Infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) cloud revenue was up 26% to $138 million. Hardware systems revenue was down 8% to $1.2 billion. GAAP operating income was up 3% to $3.0 billion, and the GAAP operating margin was 34%. Non-GAAP operating income was up 2% to $3.8 billion, and the non-GAAP operating margin was 44%. GAAP net income was unchanged at $2.2 billion while non-GAAP net income was up 2% at $2.8 billion. GAAP earnings per share were $0.48, up 2% compared to last year while non-GAAP earnings per share were $0.62, up 4%. GAAP operating cash flow on a trailing twelve-month basis was $15.4 billion.</p>

Oracle Reports Another Miss On Earnings And Says CEO Larry Ellison Is Stepping Down

That's a miss.</span></li><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">$0.63 EPS vs. expectations of $0.60 in earnings per share (EPS). That's a beat.</span></li></ul><p>Last year, Oracle had $0.69 EPS and $9.61 billion in revenue, so analysts were expectation the company to report a decline in both sales and profit.</p><p>That's because Oracle is now focused on building up its cloud computing businesses as fast as it can. And with cloud, revenue is billed on a subscription basis, typically over a couple of years, and recognized as it is collected. With old-school software licenses, more revenue is recognized immediately. So as Oracle builds its cloud business, revenues will at first decline, until its billing enough SaaS customers to make up the difference.</p><p>So it's not surprising with this quarterly earnings, Oracle is emphasizing the number of customers it signed up for cloud computing, in particular the higher-margin software subscription business (known as Software-as-a-Service or SaaS) and the higher-margin app development/hosting business (known as Platform-as-a-Service or PaaS).</p><p>Oracle has also recently announced several services that compete head-on with 800-pound cloud computing gorilla Amazon Web Services, but not all of <a href="https://cloud.oracle.com/en_US/leverage_infrastructure">the services it announced</a> are<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/oracles-amazon-killer-is-6-months-away-2015-11"> up and running</a>. Oracle 2Q reports earnings: a miss on revenue, a beat on profits

<p>Earnings per share missed estimates by a penny, coming in at $0.65.</p>
<p>Revenues, however, came up shorter, at $8.97 billion versus the $9.37 billion expected by analysts.</p>
<p>New software licenses and cloud software subscription revenues were down 2 percent to $2.3 billion.</p>
<p>Software license updates and product support revenue was up 7 percent to $4.3 billion.</p>
<p>Adjusted operating margin was 47 percent.</p>
