The e-commerce giant began reaching out to hospital executives in January to discuss transforming its marketplace from a business with a limited selection of medical supplies to a major supplier of products, <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/amazons-latest-ambition-to-be-a-major-hospital-supplier-1518517802">according</a> to the Wall Street Journal. The company will instead focus on distributing medical supplies to hospitals and smaller clinics. The decision isn't surprising - Amazon <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/digital-health-briefing-amazon-to-sell-medical-devices-supplies-fda-approves-device-to-help-opioid-addicts-clinical-wearables-usage-takes-off-2017-11">canceled</a> a pharmaceutical wholesaler application for Maine in December 2017, telling regulators that it had no intention of selling drugs. It's likely the company's reasoning behind the move was driven by factors like lacking the necessary infrastructure to transport drugs and having trouble breaking ground in the firmly established pharmaceutical supplier market. And while it's possible that Amazon is simply delaying a pharma push as it develops its relationships and infrastructure, the company faces an uphill battle, making it an unlikely outcome in the near future.But Amazon's healthcare distribution ambitions aren't hinged on its pharmaceutical efforts.<ul><li>The company will continue distributing low-sensitivity medical supplies through Amazon Business. It's been supplying medical products such as glucometers, gloves, and stethoscopes for several years, CNBC notes. </li><li>At the same time, Amazon's been <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/digital-health-briefing-amazon-is-selling-exclusive-over-the-counter-drugs-deepmind-va-partner-for-patient-health-optra-health-launches-alexa-powered-genomic-solution-2018-2">selling</a> direct-to-consumer drugs on its website under the Basic Care brand. The over-the-counter medication doesn't give Amazon a pathway to selling prescription drugs, the company said. But it could help strengthen consumers' association between Amazon and healthcare as the company continues to move into the healthcare market.</li></ul>And distribution is just one of its multiple healthcare endeavors. The company appears to be building out a full healthcare ecosystem in an effort to become a one-stop shop for health systems and patients. This would also help to make Google Assistant - Google's AI voice assistant - more competitive with Amazon's Alexa. Amazon has been building up the health capabilities of its assistant for some time. It has been running a developer competition to build voice apps to help people manage chronic illness, for example.Nokia's exit from the smart health industry doesn't necessarily mean a full exit from the digital health market. The company's foray into healthcare wearables opened the door to multiple relationships with healthcare companies and provided Nokia with a "new perspective" on the healthcare space, Nokia chief strategy officer Kathrin Buvac said. Within healthcare, this could include offering healthcare-focused IoT and wireless solutions for hospitals and healthcare systems.OPTUM REVENUE HITS DOUBLE-DIGIT GROWTH: Optum, UnitedHealthcare's health IT and tech business, <a href="http://www.unitedhealthgroup.com/Newsroom/Articles/Feed/UnitedHealth%20Group/2018/~/media/UHG/PDF/2018/UNH-Q1-2018-Release.ashx">reported</a> 11% revenue growth year-over-year (YoY) in Q1 2018 to reach $23.6 billion. The increase was driven in part by OptumHealth's efforts to expand care delivery, digital consumer engagement, and health financial services - OptumHealth revenue grew 22% YoY, making it the fastest growing business within Optum. The company recently enabled users of its OptumBank health savings accounts to use Apple Pay, Apple's mobile wallet, when paying for specific medical services. This could become a popular payment option as consumers begin to take to digital payment options. And treating it costs at least <a href="https://www.acatoday.org/Patients/Health-Wellness-Information/Back-Pain-Facts-and-statistics">$50 billion a year</a>.Roughly half of all working Americans say they have back pain symptoms each year, and it's the third most common reason for visits to the doctor's office, the <a href="https://www.acatoday.org/Patients/Health-Wellness-Information/Back-Pain-Facts-and-statistics">American Chiropractic Association (ACA) says</a>. A German company wants to address the issue and help people get better care.Konstantin Mehl founded <a href="https://www.kaiahealth.com/?locale=en">Kaia Health</a> as an app to help people with chronic back pain get consistent care at an affordable rate. The company just raised $8 million to bring the tool to the US.<h2>An app that aims to treat chronic back pain </h2>"We wanted to address, how can you better empower the user to better understand their condition and better cope with it?" Rutger Flohil, Kaia Health's US CEO, told Business Insider. Kaia's app uses artificial intelligence to help come up with treatments for people with back pain. The user answers a series of questions about their pain level and where they feel the most pain in their body. Based on their answers, the app creates a series of daily exercises targeted for the specific needs of the user. Users then use their smartphone camera to record themselves doing the workouts, and the app can give them feedback to make sure they're doing them correctly. A behavioral health coach is also available on the app for users to ask questions and speak to. The app also has educational information and mindfulness exercises, like breathing and relaxation techniques. The exercises average 15 to 20 minutes a day. The app costs $80 for a one-year subscription.The approach is multidisciplinary, tackling physical, education, and psychological aspects to treat back pain. Physical therapists and health professionals created the exercises for the app. <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div>The approach differs from more traditional methods of treating back pain, which can include medication like opioids or painkillers, physical therapy sessions, and surgery. <a href="https://www.cathrynjakobsonramin.com/">Cathryn Ramin</a>, a journalist and expert in the field of chronic back pain, said she's skeptical of the Kaia Health app because in her experience spending time with an exercise physiologist, personal trainer or podiatrist is key to recovery.Ramin said the app's focus on pain or alleviating pain is actually counterproductive. Instead, the goals should be things like picking up grandchildren from school, or doing work in the garden, Ramin said. <h2>A funding boost to enter the US healthcare market </h2>Earlier this week, Kaia announced that it raised <a href="https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/kaia-health-announces-8-million-in-funding-led-by-optum-ventures-300919137.html">$8 million in funding</a> led by <a href="https://www.optumventures.com/">Optum Ventures</a>, the VC arm of giant healthcare firm UnitedHealth Group. The hope is to accelerate Kaia's growth in the US, extend the platform to other types of chronic pain, and expand the supporting clinical evidence base. "Kaia Health has taken a technology-led approach to create a digital therapeutic that will make treatment more accessible to patients who need it," said <a href="https://www.optumventures.com/team/heather-roxborough">Heather Roxborough</a>, a partner at Optum Ventures. "We believe Kaia Health's digital therapeutic solutions will benefit those suffering from MSK disorders and are excited about its application in other indications."The company is headquartered in Munich, Germany and has around 275,000 users globally. Kaia wouldn't say how many are in the US. The company has raised a total of $22 million. <h2>Finding partners in the US</h2>Companies that focus on chronic health issues like diabetes, heart disease, and mental health are appealing targets for a digital therapeutics approach, since managing these kinds of diseases is closely tied to behavior. The same can be said for chronic back pain. He said the company has a compelling pitch for employers too, because the app can potentially prevent missed days at the office because of back pain, and lower medical expenses for the employer. "Self-insured employers have an interest in providing better care for their employees from a financial perspective because they are taking the medical bills," Flohil said. "Back pain is the first driver of disability claims and absenteeism. They'd be a great partner for us." <h2>Digital therapeutics remains a lucrative investment opportunity</h2>Digital therapeutics, defined as software-based disease management solutions, often with a mobile app component - has become more prominent in healthcare over the last five years, according to <a href="https://www.cbinsights.com/research/digital-therapeutics-startups-expert-intelligence/">CB Insights</a>. Digital therapeutics startups raised $818 million last year across 57 deals, up from $305 million in 2015. Through the first half of this year, investors bet $380 million on startups in the space, according to CB Insights. The Vital Moto Mod includes a proprietary finger cuff that allows users to measure their heart rate, respiratory rate, body temperature, blood oxygen levels, and blood pressure. </li><li>Oska Wellness, a consumer health technology company, <a href="https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/new-app-driven-device-from-oska-pulse-oska-pulse-active-300579265.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a> a new mobile app that is capable of controlling the company's Oska Pulse Active electromagnetic field device. The device can be used to reduce muscle stiffness, relieve minor pain, and increase mobility for people who suffer chronic pain, as well as allow them to track and manage their pain via the app. </li></ul>Precision care:<ul><li>Exploragen, a DNA lifestyle company, is <a href="https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/exploragen-partners-with-sleepscore-labs-and-offers-free-dna-sequencing-kits-at-ces-2018-300579651.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">partnering</a> with sleep technology company SleepScore, to launch its SlumberType DNA app. The app allows users to turn their genetic information into personalized insights to optimize sleep. </li><li>DnaNudge, the UK-based startup, is aiming to offer consumers in-store DNA tests at supermarkets, in order to help people find healthy foods tailored to their needs, <a href="http://www.bbc.com/news/av/technology-42577483/ces-2018-dnanudge-app-uses-saliva-to-recommend-what-to-eat" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to the BBC. After getting results from a rapid, in-store cheek swab genetic test, consumers can use a smartphone app or proprietary wearable device to scan food at their supermarket to see what is best for them to eat, according to their genetic makeup. </li></ul>AI DIGITAL ASSISTANT CAN HELP EMERGENCY DISPATCHERS: A Copenhagen-based digital assistant, called <a href="http://www.corti.ai/">Corti</a>, is helping Danish emergency dispatchers determine whether a patient is going through cardiac arrest, <a href="https://www.fastcompany.com/40515740/having-a-heart-attack-this-ai-helps-emergency-dispatchers-find-out?mkt_tok=eyJpIjoiTURnM01XUmxNVGxrWkdRMSIsInQiOiJNbUNqTEhaSnlIMGFnVnpHY1AzMmdzV1N4NFdZZTh4SThFemhDVkFLQmlFMmo2NFI2TVNDWGNhSVB5ZGNKTFFMY2J5QndsXC9">according</a> to Fast Company. Corti, which is also the name of the company that developed the AI, runs in the background of emergency dispatch calls and uses speech recognition software and machine learning (ML) to pick up background cues, such as breathing patterns, that allow it to determine whether a person is suffering from cardiac arrest. An early small-scale study found that the AI can diagnose cardiac arrests with 95% accuracy. That's compared to the average 73% accuracy of human dispatchers in Copenhagen. A larger study is planned. Corti demonstrates the potential of AI systems that can augment emergency services and triage - the faster and more accurately dispatchers can determine the nature of an injury, the better the outcome. For example, outside of the hospital, the chance of survival for someone in cardiac arrest decreases roughly 10% each minute. Given an early and accurate diagnosis from a digital assistant, the dispatcher might be able to coach people nearby through CPR, or even send out medical drones with defibrillators to the location, which could arrive ahead of ambulances. OSUCHS began notifying customers January 5 and has since updated its security features. Cybersecurity is an ongoing concern for the healthcare industry. Four in five US doctors have experienced a cyberattack of some sort, <a href="https://www.healthcaredive.com/news/4-out-of-5-us-physicians-have-experienced-a-cybersecurity-attack/512848/">according</a> to a study by Accenture and the American Medical Association. Despite this, a majority of US healthcare businesses lack a cybersecurity leader.
