New Delhi, In a significant ruling, the Supreme Court on Friday dismissed Chinese smartphone brand <keyword id="1731609" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="oppo" source="Orion">OPPO</keyword>'s plea against a Delhi High Court order which directed the company to deposit 23 per cent of the amount generated from its sales in the country for infringing upon <keyword id="6354716" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nokia" source="Orion">Nokia</keyword>'s patent. A division bench of the Delhi High Court passed the order in July, after it found that the Chinese smartphone brand was using Nokia's technology without the requisite consent. The HC had reached the 23 per cent penalty figure after taking into account OPPO's sales in India which is around 23 per cent of its global sales. A Nokia Technologies spokesperson said in a statement that they welcome the Supreme Court decision. "OPPO has been unwilling to renew its license on fair and reasonable terms or resolve the matter amicably and has used our technology without making any royalty payments for two years," a Nokia spokesperson said. Courts in India, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, and Brazil have all given their verdicts in Nokia's favour. "Once again, we encourage OPPO to play by the rules, and like its competitors, agree to a license on fair and reasonable terms, rather than continue to operate without one," said Nokia. OPPO had secured a licence from Nokia in 2018 for using some of the Finnish telecom gear company's technology for three years. Nokia alleged that after the expiry of the pact, OPPO sold around 77 million devices in India without paying a single rupee in royalty, according to reports. In July 2022, a German court decided a suit in favour of smartphone brand Nokia in its 4G/5G patent dispute against OPPO. According to GizmoChina, the suit had resulted from the breakdown in discussions between Nokia and OPPO over 4G (LTE) and 5G patents. Nokia had sued OPPO over nine Standard Essential Patents (SEPs) and five implementation patents in three regional German Courts. Instead of standing out in terms of design, they blend in – which might be exactly what many of us might prefer. <div type="image" title="Nokia Power Earbuds Lite case" msid="81304617" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Nokia Power Earbuds Lite charging case&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> The case is boxy and comes with a matte finish – going against the approach that some of its competitors like the Realme Buds Air 2 have taken, where the case is curved and glossy. This does help distinguish the Nokia earbuds, but there is more to this experience than just the design of the case. The earbuds sport an in-canal design – this helps in offering improved passive noise cancellation, as the design helps in physically blocking out external noise. This is especially useful since the Nokia earbuds do not offer active noise cancellation, unlike the Realme Buds Air 2. Build quality and comfort The Nokia Power Earbuds Lite is lightweight despite the boxy case and the relatively bigger size of the earbuds when compared to some other options like the Galaxy Buds Pro. <div type="image" title="Nokia Power Earbuds Lite buds" msid="81304623" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Nokia Power Earbuds Lite earbud&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> The Nokia earbuds feel comfortable and light enough, so using them for extended periods of time is not an issue. The earbuds also support basic functionality like play/pause media with a single tap, receiving and ending calls with a double tap, and bringing up Google Assistant with a long press. The case is sturdy and the matte black finish gives it an understated look. I do worry though that it could get spoiled easily, especially if you have sweaty hands or oily skin. Apart from that, though, the case feels well-built and has a satisfying click to it when you open and close it. Performance and call quality Coming to the most important part of the review, the Nokia Power Earbuds Lite gets the job done without any fuss. HMD has not included support for fast pairing, so you have to manually go into the Bluetooth settings on your phone when you pair the earbuds for the first time. But once that is done, the experience is seamless. <div type="image" title="Nokia Power Earbuds Lite" msid="81304637" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Nokia Power Earbuds Lite&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> The Nokia earbuds come with a 6mm graphene driver, which is fairly small in comparison to the Realme Buds Air 2 and the OnePlus Buds Z, both of which have a 10mm driver. A driver converts electrical signals into sound. Simply put, it creates the sound that you hear. The difference is noticeable while listening to music – while the bass and treble are decent, the experience is still inferior when compared to the Realme and OnePlus earbuds. The call quality was decent, although in noisy environments, there was a fair amount of disturbance on the other side of the call. Overall, HMD could have done a better job with these earbuds, especially when there is a lot of competition in this price segment. Battery life The Nokia Power Earbuds Lite promises up to 35 hours of battery life in total – including the charging case. In my experience, I found that these earbuds easily last around 32 hours, with plenty of calls and music throughout. The charging case comes with a USB Type-C port, which is the same port that is used by almost all new smartphones these days. However, even if you don’t have a USB Type-C cable, you don’t have to worry as HMD has bundled one in the box. Verdict The Nokia Power Earbuds Lite has its task cut out. At this price point, the competition offers more features in more compact form factors. While HMD has done a good job with the build quality, these Nokia earbuds miss out on some features like active noise cancellation (ANC), noise cancellation for calls, and fast pairing. The driver is small too, which has a noticeable effect on audio quality. Nokia Power Earbuds Lite review – missed opportunity

Will India be finally able to join the global 5G bandwagon this year? Reports surfaced late last month that 5G spectrum may finally see the light of the day in 2022. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has reportedly informed the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) that it is likely to submit 5G pricing recommendations in March. It means that if things go as planned, the country can witness 5G auction in July-August. Despite the buzz around 5G, telecom companies, along with private players, are only conducting 5G trials in the country. Earlier last year, Airtel demonstrated India's first 5G experience over a live 4G network. It also demonstrated India's first rural 5G trial as well as the first Cloud gaming experience on 5G. <keyword id="6354504" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="reliance-jio" source="Orion">Reliance Jio</keyword> is another leading player in the field of 5G testing technology. The company has successfully conducted trials of connected drones on its indigenous 5G network. According to Mukesh Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director, Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), India must complete the migration from 2G to 4G to 5G at the earliest and the rollout of 5G should be India's national priority. <keyword id="2003276" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jio" source="Orion">Jio</keyword> has developed a 100 per cent home-grown and comprehensive 5G solution, which is fully Cloud native and digitally managed. "Because of its converged, future-proof architecture, Jio's network could be quickly and seamlessly upgraded from 4G to 5G," according to Ambani. Nokia and <keyword id="15492" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vodafone" source="Orion">Vodafone</keyword> Idea have also partnered to trial 5G services using E-band in areas where fibre is challenging to deploy. Vodafone Idea is currently conducting 5G trials in India using the trial spectrum in the 3.3GHz-3.6GHz band and mmWave band (24.25GHz-28.5GHz). Earlier, Vodafone Idea had achieved peak speed of over 3.7 Gbps during its 5G trials in Pune. The DoT had approved applications of Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone and MTNL for 5G trials. The 5G technology will represent around 39 per cent of mobile subscriptions in India at the end of 2027, estimated at about 500 million subscriptions, says a latest Ericsson report. According to Viswanath Ramaswamy, Vice President, Technology, IBM Technology Sales, IBM India/South Asia, 5G offers enormous potential to advance industries across streaming, communications, advanced robotics and manufacturing. "However given the complexity of telecom networks today, it is clear that the tools, systems and methods need to be orchestrated for the network of tomorrow," he said. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to quickly enable changes in the network that optimise network performance and reliability by applying Machine Learning, helping "Communications services providers (CSPs) deliver on the promise of 5G by providing faster customer experiences," Ramaswamy added. India being a ‘mobile first' country, cellular internet is central to every person's digital lives as they communicate, consume and create content, commerce and connect with the community. "As smartphone users mature, they use devices more and more for creating 4K/8K videos, clicking high-resolution 108MP+ photos, streaming HD content and conducting video conferencing calls. The higher bandwidth and higher capacity technology such as 5G, thus, becomes the cornerstone to enable these advanced experiences," Neil Shah, Vice President, Research, at Counterpoint, told IANS. Several smartphone players have also started testing <keyword id="4400143" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="5g-in-india" source="Orion">5G in India</keyword> and globally. OPPO in November 2021 announced that it has successfully conducted its first VoNR (Voice/Video on New Radio) call from its Hyderabad 5G lab. The 5G VoNR calls were made using the latest Reno6 series smartphone and an end-to-end 5G Standalone (SA) network powered by Keysight test solutions at the Hyderabad 5G Innovation lab of OPPO. OnePlus has announced that the company is investing almost $30 million to scale up 5G research and development labs to take 5G technology to more users worldwide. Technology services major Capgemini has also bolstered its collaboration with Swedish telecommunications giant Ericsson to accelerate the deployment of 5G solutions via its 5G lab in Mumbai. The bigger benefit 5G can bring is beyond personal transformation, "Which is enterprise and social transformation with excess capacity, lower latencies and higher throughputs with use-cases such as Private Networks and Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) Broadband, bridging the digital divide," Shah added. In India, an affordable 5G for the masses may take a longer time to happen, but the country must take the first step towards it this year, so that it catches up with the world on 5G fast. In early 2019, Google launched a “Premier Device Program” that gave smartphone makers more share of search revenue if they agreed to not load third-party app stores on their devices. This way Google ensured its Play Store monopoly on Android devices. In addition to not pre-installing third-party app stores, Google’s Premier Device Program also prohibited APK installs of apps, The Verge <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2021/8/19/22632806/google-epic-premier-device-program-lg-motorola-hmd">reported</a> citing new unredacted documents from the Epic vs Google case. This left Android users with only the Google Play Store as the app store marketplace. In the court documents, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/at-its-heart-the-legal-spat-between-apple-and-fortnite-maker-epic-games-is-about-whether-or-not-the-iphone-is-a-computer/articleshow/82392083.cms">Epic Games</a> pointed out that this program was not made public earlier as the smartphone makers had to sign a confidentiality agreement preventing them from talking about it without Google’s written approval. OEMs part of Google’s Premier Device Program Smartphone makers that were part of the Premier Device Program received a 12% share of Google’s search revenue. This is in addition to the 8% that they already earn from their partner contract with Google. Companies like LG and Motorola were even offered 3-6% of the revenue that came from player spending in the Google Play Store. Motorola and LG turned out to be one the biggest players here with the former committing 98% of its devices, and the latter 95%. HMD Global is also part of the Premier Device Program with its contract having started in December 2019 and continuing until November 30, 2022. The Finnish company has <a href="https://9to5google.com/2021/08/19/google-premier-device-program/">reportedly</a> committed 100% of its Nokia smartphones to the program. Google’s Premier Device Program included almost all the popular Android OEMs. Oppo, Vivo and OnePlus were also part of the deal with 70% of their devices committed. Companies like Sony and Xiaomi also had their devices committed to this program but only 50% and 40%, respectively. Google offered Android smartphone brands additional revenue to avoid third-party app stores

It’s a riot in India’s burgeoning <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Vijay+Shekhar+Sharma">smartphone</a> market. Chinese <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Vijay+Shekhar+Sharma">smartphone</a> brands have turned it on its head forever. A recent IDC study revealed the top 5 Indian cities make up approximately 60% of the online <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=smartphone+sales">smartphone sales</a>. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Samsung">Samsung</a> came at the top in leading 30 Indian cities. More ‘value for money’ brands like <keyword id="71696" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Micromax">Micromax</keyword>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Lenovo">Lenovo</a> and <keyword id="11148" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Motorola">Motorola</keyword> followed. 
 While the numbers suggest the chaos is limited to the metros and tier I cities, tier II and III cities are expected to play a major role in the near future. Now, they’re up against home-grown brands like Micromax and Lava. Basically what Micromax did to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Nokia">Nokia</a> years ago? Marketing brands like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Xiaomi">Xiaomi</a> have locked horns with the likes of <keyword id="13722" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Lenovo">Lenovo</keyword> and Motorola. The former doesn’t even have a brand ambassador in India! 
 Newer Chinese brands like <keyword id="1731609" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Oppo">Oppo</keyword> and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=LeEco">LeEco</a> are kicking serious ass too. They’re bringing in the money power of their rich Chinese dads, but considering ROI on investment, it’s very difficult to sustain their current models due to stiff competition. 
 Remember, back in the days <keyword id="35621" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="e-commerce">e-commerce</keyword> players were offering subsidies to host online sales. After 2016, only the manufacturer will have advantage as the Flipkarts, Snapdeals and Amazons of India will not offer too much in discounts, and this will reduce cost-efficiency in business models. 
 
There are two options now - go offline with huge marketing investment, or stay online with a cost-effective model.

Online Vs. Offline Game 
As the numbers suggest, Indian metros and Tier I cities already have mass online penetration. Till now, most Chinese brands weren’t even interested to look beyond, but are now being forced to because of the tax complications state governments have set up. Entering the offline market also means being cowed down by heavy investment for retailers and distributors. 
 
“Offline will remain and prosper. The only thing that might happen is that the offline sales in Metros might slip a bit into online”, Syed agrees. 
 Offline brands like <keyword id="10591" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Samsung">Samsung</keyword>, Lenovo and Micromax that still have a huge portion of the offline market, need to check inflation. You ask why? 
 
Because brands like Oppo have brought some of their Chinese distributors to India. These brands will give a tough time standing up to Indian brands, and it’s only a matter of time before Samsung feels some heat in its collar too. 
 
Rather than investing and promoting on the marketing front, brands like Micromax have to focus on improving their product’s value proposition. If you’ve noticed, Micromax hasn’t spent a fortune on advertising since the Sliver 5. 
 
Believe it or not, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=LeEco">LeEco</a> and Oppo are going into Tier II and Tier III cities, and holding small marketing campaigns there. Earlier the distributor drove sales, now it’s the brand. Indian brands are not able to cope up here. 
 
 “Just an online strategy will only help reach a certain consumer-base. We’re planning t have our own stores and offline distribution very soon. Half of our business in Feb came from the non-metros and non-Tier I cities”, Atul tells me. 
 
To reduce, or not to reduce – Price, that’s the question! 
In a day and age where the average life of a smartphone is down to less than a year in India, is there any chance of the price war cooling down anytime soon? 
 
“Around 30% customers, basically the young crowd will continue to focus on hardware vs. price. The high-end market will have an eye for aesthetics, and would prefer to have a look and feel”, Syed says. 
 “You have to be present offline to ensure you get the bigger consumer-base. We’ll launch into offline in the next 3-4 months”, <keyword id="350911" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Atul-Jain">Atul Jain</keyword>, India Head, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=LeEco">LeEco</a> says. 
 
If the hardware craze is limited to tier I and metros, does it matter if a phone is priced at Rs. 10k, Rs. 9,999 or Rs. 9,990? 
 
“It doesn’t matter. Price is just one component. The consumer decision is based on at least 6 factors like design, availability, battery and price. Consumers could be sensitive to pricing, and as manufacturers we’ve to take that into account”, Atul says. 
 
Do Flash Sales Work? 
 
Both <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Coolpad">Coolpad</a> and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=LeEco">LeEco</a> agree flash sales can be used as a tool to drive initial volume. Brands with constraint in delivery in the first phase chose that model. By the time they catch up in terms of numbers, they open it for all. That was typically in a month or two. 
 
However, Indians are now wary of waiting. They have options. Micromax’s Yu brand previously did flash sales for over 3-4 months. Now their flash sales don’t last that long. 
 
Basically, two quarters on, there will be lesser flash sales. 
 
Increasing Market Share 
So how do you increase market share in a market overcrowded with fiery competition that’s baying for your blood? 
 
For one, the era of marketing is over. You have to significantly control costs. Supply chain will become the foremost focus, R&amp;D comes second. Ones you have R&amp;D, you can experiment, and the supply chain will help reduce cost. 
 
“We’re setting up a global R&amp;D centre in Bangalore that’ll work on software and screen technologies”, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=LeEco">LeEco</a> India Head says. 
 
In case you don’t live under a rock you must have noticed there are two segments for every ‘new’ smartphone brand, a regular model, with exceptional value proposition, and a flagship segment with high-end specs. 
 
“We’re coming up with a flagship soon. However, we’re very skeptical about marketing. Marketing gimmicks never work”, Syed says. 
 
Offline Prices 
Price and specs have been the biggest weapons for newer brands launching in India. The notion is that when you set up an offline distribution network, prices go up. That’s what happened with Samsung, and other brands too. However, if the prices are higher offline, it’s not fair to the consumer. 
 
“The distribution cost is what gets added when a product goes offline. That’s built into the overall costing”, Atul winks. 
 
Differentiation: 
So how do you create differentiation? It continues to be quality at affordable price. Atul let me in on a secret. They’re actually at a loss on a per device basis. 
 “We’re an ecosystem company unlike Samsung, <keyword id="6354427" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Apple">Apple</keyword> or Oppo, and can sell the <keyword id="310615" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Le">Le</keyword> 1S at Rs. 10,999 even when the industry pegs the cost of production at Rs. 16k. We can ensure that pricing because of our large volume in China and India, and don’t believe in making profits from hardware”, Atul says. 
 
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=LeEco">LeEco</a> is perfectly fine with the loss. 
 
“For us phones are just screen, we have a 650 CDN networks of which 10 are in India. Nobody has that. It helps deliver content”, Atul says. 
 
The plan is <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=LeEco">LeEco</a> will churn content to earn that money back. Atul say that way the company can also monetize second hand phones. To conclude, they think they’ll win because they make it, and don’t just market it. 
 
“That’s the difference between us and marketing brands. We’ve been manufacturing in China for the last 24 years”, Syed boasts.

It allows directions to pop up as a part of the scene being captured by the camera lens along with a distance countdown. Apple has plans to launch the AR-enabled ‘Apple Glasses’. The company has been heavily investing in ARKit to develop AR use cases for mobile devices and Apple’s Glasses would be positioned as an iPhone accessory. The technology is already available, the question is how creatively can developers apply it.
