OPPO ropes in Varun Dhawan as the new Ambassador for F series

(Eds: Adding more info) New Delhi, May 18 () Chinese smartphone maker Oppo has suspended operations at Noida factory after its six workers were found to be infected by coronavirus, a senior Gautam Budh Nagar police officer confirmed on Monday.The company had resumed operations on Friday with screening of all employees who were asked to join the work.Based on the information available with the Gautam Budh (GB) Nagar police, the officer told that six workers at the Noida plant of Oppo have been tested covid-19 positive.When contacted, Oppo India said that the company had obtained permission from the state authorities to resume production, following the MHA directive."As an organisation that places the safety of all our employees and citizens at the forefront, we had not only undertaken COVID-19 tests for all employees at the manufacturing facility in Greater Noida but also suspended all operations at the plant. We are undertaking stringent measures to keep the employees safe," the company said in a statement.Oppo also said that it has started screening more than 3,000 workers who have to join work and also approached the government for the test.There have been total 255 coronavirus positive cases in GB Nagar as on Sunday.Till Saturday, 4,738 samples were collected from all across the GB Nagar district, comprising Noida and Greater Noida. Oppo F17, Oppo F17 Pro launched with quad rear cameras, 4,010mAh battery and more

New Delhi, Nov 26 () Chinese smartphone maker OPPO on Tuesday said it has integrated 'Digilocker' service into the latest version of its ColorOS operating system as part of its efforts to ensure safety and security of user data.
 The new operating system, which will start rolling out across OPPO's portfolio of devices later this month, also includes a personal information protection option that lets users protect their personal information from third-party apps.
 "The launch of ColorOS 7 with a revamped interface and enhanced features is a testament to OPPO's continued focus on elevating consumer experience. We are constantly listening to our customers and wanted to empower them to experience the ease and convenience of paperless governance," OPPO India Vice President R&amp;D Tasleem Arif said.
 In line with this endeavour, OPPO has become the first smartphone brand to integrate Digilocker service into ColorOS 7 and has come up with a localised feature called 'DocVault', he added.
 A part of the Indian government's Digital India initiative, Digital Locker allows users to store documents like driving licence and Aadhaar card digitally, instead of having to carry these in physical format.
 "We place utmost importance on privacy protection and securing user data. To this end, we have ensured that the user information will be stored and fetched directly from the government server," he noted.
 ColorOS 7 also has a feature where users can say no to an app that seeks access to contacts. In such a scenario, blank contact information is sent to the third-party app and this does not affect the normal operation of the app.
 Arif said another feature that is aimed at enhancing security is the 'private safe' feature in ColorOS 7 that allows users to transfer photos, videos, audio, and other documents to a "secure zone" on the device that is not accessible by any other app.
 OPPO ColorOS Senior Principal Engineer Manoj Kumar said that the team at OPPO headquarters and the India R&amp;D team worked closely for one year to conceptualise and globally implement ColorOS 7.
 The ColorOS 7 update will be rolled out to over 20 phone models in a phased manner from later this month, covering Reno, Find, F, K, and A series.

Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance's Covid-19 response has resonated the most among people as per Twitter and LinkedIn

New Delhi, Apr 23 () Urging the government to include mobile devices under the essential services category, handset firms on Thursday said many frontline workers, patients and other vulnerable groups are facing a tough time during the coronavirus lockdown due to non-availability of the devices. The India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA), whose members include firms like Apple, Foxconn, Wistron, Flextronics, Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo and Lava, said mobile phones are at the heart of the digital ecosystem and their non-availability can be life threatening. "Senior citizens and those with underlying health conditions are most susceptible to COVID-19. In such cases, the fatality rate is upwards of 10 per cent. The disease is such that all times, the patients need to fend for themselves from the time they communicate with municipal authorities regarding symptoms to testing and treatment," ICEA Chairman Pankaj Mohindroo said in a letter to IT Secretary Ajay Prakash Sawhney. ICEA said this can be a life-threatening situation and more than 10 crore senior citizens at the bottom of the pyramid do not have access to even feature phones and are being denied access. The government has allowed operations of telecom, internet, broadcast and IT services but not mobile devices that are pivotal to accessing all these services. "Unfortunately, and very tragically, we are facing grave life-threatening situations wherein our frontline responders and patients are facing challenges because of the non-availability of mobile phones and other consumer premise equipment," Mohindroo said. The Ministry of Electronics and IT has recommended to the Home Ministry to include mobile devices, including laptops, in the list of essential goods. This will enable e-commerce companies to start selling mobile devices and gradually stores across the country can be also opened up in areas where coronavirus cases are under control. According to industry estimates, around 10 crore mobile phones at present are likely to have become non-functional because of defects that may be beyond repair. Oppo India recently said it received over 7 lakh queries on its 'Ollie' chatbot for resolving handset related problems in March. According to after-sales services firm OnsiteGo, screen damage accounts for 71 per cent of mobile phones problems. Mohindroo said mobile phones and devices are mission critical to the functioning of government officials, hospitals, doctors, police, civil defence, disaster management personnel and officials ensuring provision of utilities such as electricity, water, sanitation and running municipal bodies. The industry body said non-availability of their communication link due to temporary or permanent breakdown can have debilitating impact which is endangering lives. The government's Aarogya Setu app to help contain coronavirus is running in over 6 crore smartphones. "Citizens who want to upgrade from feature phones to smartphones are being deprived of Aarogya Setu. We estimate that this runs into at least 10 million (1 crore) citizens already," Mohindroo said. Coronavirus cases in India have gone from three in the beginning of March to over 20,500. ICEA said even for ordinary citizens and office goers, the ability to work from home and isolate from each other necessarily requires lakhs of employees to use such mobile phones and devices. The industry body has demanded that sales of mobile phones and devices through physical and e-commerce platforms that are allowed to deliver essential goods should be allowed. "Telecom services retail stores numbering more than 10-15 lakh are already open rightly, to provide uninterrupted mobile services and recharge to citizens as essential services. "Most of the mobile phone selling stores are also selling these services and are only a small subset of 2.5 lakh of this ecosystem. Therefore, we should not deprive the traders of their livelihood and citizens the opportunity to buy and upgrade," Mohindroo said. ICEA has also approached Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the request. Mobile phone companies at present only have room for addressing export requirements, which account for around 12 per cent of total production. In 2019-20, mobile phone players in India exported devices worth about Rs 25,000 crore and the total production is estimated to have crossed Rs 2 lakh crore now. The mobile phone industry is estimated to have faced losses of around Rs 15,000 crore during the 21-day lockdown which started on March 24.  "We are not placing any new orders for 3G smartphones. Manufacturers are not importing any new 3G phones," <keyword id="6442405" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="subhash-chandra">Subhash Chandra</keyword>, managing director of south-based retailer Sangeetha Mobiles told ET. 
 The country’s largest cellphone maker, <keyword id="10591" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Samsung">Samsung</keyword>, now has only three 3G smartphones in its portfolio and the remaining 22 are 4G. The company however, has yet not confirmed when it will exit 3G handsets, but has said that 4G phones are becoming the mainstream. 
 "Hence, they would want to take advantage of the 4G offering with higher speeds and reduced data tariff plans. The ecosystem of content, services and applications has evolved significantly, which is fuelling adoption," <keyword id="68726" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="manu-Sharma">Manu Sharma</keyword>, vice president (mobiles business) at <keyword id="161293" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Samsung-India-Electronics">Samsung India Electronics</keyword> told ET. 
 <keyword id="1731609" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Oppo">Oppo</keyword> India will be only selling 4G cellphones by 2017 as confirmed by the company president <keyword id="2871924" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sky-Li">Sky Li</keyword>. <keyword id="16129" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="HTC">HTC</keyword> president (South Asia and India) <keyword id="246348" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Faisal-Siddiqui">Faisal Siddiqui</keyword> said with 4G smartphone prices plunging in India, it will exit 3G smartphones by March. 
 According to Counterpoint's senior analyst <keyword id="1943940" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tarun-Pathak">Tarun Pathak</keyword>, a maturing component ecosystem will lower the pricing of entry-level 4G handsets to about $40 (about Rs 2,600) by the end of 2016.

3G smartphone demand declines, big players
move to manufacturing only 4G smartphones

A total number of 380 million smartphones were sold globally in the first quarter of 2017, which means the smatphone market saw a 9.1 percent increase over the first quarter of 2016, according to <keyword id="6371981" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gartner">Gartner</keyword>, Inc. Also, Mobile phone buyers are spending more to get a better phone, resulting in the rise in average selling prices of types of phone. 
 The shift in buyer preference is helping the Chinese trio <keyword id="6357456" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Huawei">Huawei</keyword>, <keyword id="1731609" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Oppo">Oppo</keyword> and <keyword id="215177" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vivo">Vivo</keyword> in making a giant space for themselves, now having achieved a combined market share of 24 percent in the first quarter of 2017, up 7 percentage points year on year. All three manufacturers working almost on a similar strategy of building desirable features at affordable prices the trio has managed to grow in a big way all over the world. 
 "The top three Chinese smartphone manufacturers are driving sales with their competitively priced, high quality smartphones equipped with innovative features," said <keyword id="198285" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Anshul-Gupta">Anshul Gupta</keyword>, research director at Gartner. "Furthermore, aggressive marketing and sales promotion have further helped these brands to take share from other brands in markets such as India, Indonesia and Thailand." 
 <keyword id="10591" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Samsung">Samsung</keyword>'s smartphone sales declined 3.1 percent in the first quarter of 2017 and we all know why - Samsung took a major hit with the Samsung Note 7. "Although Samsung announced that preorders for the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus are up 30 percent year over year, the absence of an alternative to Note 7 and the fierce competition in the basic smartphone segment are leading Samsung to continuously lose market share," said Mr. Gupta. While Samsung has hit a roadblock with the Note 7 in the premium segment, the Chinese manufacturers like Huawei, Oppo, Vivo have made it a challenge for Samsung to stay on top in the mid range segments. 
 Not only Samsung, <keyword id="6354427" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Apple">Apple</keyword> too is facing fierce competition from the Chinese smartphone maker specially in a market like India where the Chinese trio along with other Chinese manufacturers like <keyword id="874458" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Xiaomi">Xiaomi</keyword> are able to provide a feature packed phone at a fraction of the price. This has also led to sales of <keyword id="6354606" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="iPhone">iPhone</keyword>s to remain flat, which meant drop in market share year over year for iPhone. 
 
Huawei on the other hand edged closer to Apple with smartphone sales amounting to 34 million units in the first quarter of 2017. Despite its P9 and P9 Plus being available for more than a year now, both smartphones continued to sell well. "Huawei has now steadily held the third spot in the worldwide ranking of smartphone vendors," said Mr. Gupta. "However, pressure is mounting as its counterparts in China are catching up." 
 
Oppo achieved the best performance of the quarter and retained the No. 1 position in China with the 94.6 percent increase in worldwide smartphone sales in the first quarter of 2017, "Oppo continued to rally sales through a large network of brick-and-mortar retailers, beating market incumbents such as Samsung and Huawei," said Mr. Gupta. Similar to India Oppo's India strategy, Oppos focused on the camera, fast charging and offline retail and it helped the company up its smartphone sales in the international market. 
 
Vivo too saw a great first quarter achieving growth of 84.6 percent selling almost 26 million smartphones and gaining a market share of 6.8 percent. "Vivo saw growing demand of its smartphones from the emerging markets in Asia/Pacific, including India, where sales grew over 220 percent thanks to its increased brand appeal and high-quality smartphones," said Mr. Gupta. 
 
Although there are big launches waiting to happen for the big players this year, it is clear that the premium segment is “under attack” from the mid level feature packed affordable phones from the three Chinese smartphone makers and then some.
