<ul><li>About 87% adults in India believe <keyword id="6422069" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="online-gaming">online gaming</keyword> affect the mental health.</li><li>Of these, 76% believe this could lead to depression and anxiety, while 70% feel online gaming could lead to cyberbullying.</li><li>The survey included 1,500-city based adults.</li></ul>About 87% adults in Indian cities believe that online gaming takes a toll on their physical and mental well-being, showed a survey on Tuesday. About 76% of respondents feel that addiction to action games lead to changed behaviour and can increase depression and anxiety levels, according to the "India Digital Wellness Report" by consumer cybersecurity brand NortonLifeLock. Nearly 70% of respondents feel that children connecting with strangers while playing games online can lead to cyberbullying, harassment, and violence. The findings are based on an online survey of over 1,500 city-based Indian adults. "People could be drawn to online gaming for entertainment, but data shows that it is not all about fun and games. The virtual playing field comes with risks such as identity theft, cyber bullying, phishing, and credit card theft, to name a few," Ritesh Chopra, Director, NortonLifeLock, India, said in a statement. Two of every three respondents said they prefer playing online games to going outdoors or having social interactions. Almost 73% of the parents in the survey said that their children prefer shooting and adventure games, while 21% said that their children show a preference for casino and card games. There is a sense of growing concern among parents as 45% of respondents said they find it difficult to control their children's smartphone usage. Interestingly, 81% of the respondents who put a check mechanism on children's usage of smartphones feel they have not been effective in controlling the gaming time. The children of 42% of these respondents played games online for more than two hours every day. However, online gaming seems to have some positive impact, too, on users. About 81% of respondents feel that multiplayer online games enhance teamwork skills, while 70% of respondents feel that playing online games can make people smarter, as they improve brain coordination and reaction. The online gaming space, largely perceived to be male dominated, seems to have a lot of female takers, the results showed. About 88% of female respondents find online games to be the best pastime as compared to 86% of their male counterparts. The study also showed that when it comes to mobile gaming, children and parents tend to have a shared behaviour -- six in every 10 respondents said that they and their children spend roughly the same amount of time playing games online.

The panel of state finance ministers is likely to recommend a uniform <keyword id="6354679" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="gst" source="Orion">GST</keyword> levy of 28 per cent on <keyword id="6422069" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Online-gaming" source="Orion">online gaming</keyword> irrespective of whether it is a game of skill or game of chance, sources said. However, it is likely to suggest a revised formula for calculating the amount on which the Goods and Services Tax (GST) would be levied. Currently, online gaming attracts 18 per cent GST. The tax is levied on gross gaming revenue, which is the fees charged by online gaming portals. Sources said that the GoM report is almost final and would be submitted to the GST Council soon for consideration. The Group of Ministers (GoM), chaired by <keyword id="6355772" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="meghalaya" source="Orion">Meghalaya</keyword> Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, had in its earlier report submitted to the Council in June suggested a 28 per cent GST on on the full value of the consideration, including contest entry fee, paid by the player, without making a distinction such as games of skill or chance. However, the Council had asked the GoM to reconsider its report. Following that the GoM took the views of the Attorney General and also met stakeholders from the online gaming industry. Although the GoM deliberated on separate definitions for 'games of skill' and 'games of chance', it finally decided to tax both as demerit goods attracting a 28 per cent GST. The message has to be clear that online gaming is a demerit good. However, some relaxation in valuation methods could be provided, sources told PTI. The GoM report in June had suggested that the GST should be levied on the entire amount received as consideration from the participant. Charging 28 per cent GST on the entire amount, which a player deposits for a game for both categories of online game, would reduce the prize money left for distribution and drive away players from legitimate tax deducting portals. This may also encourage online gamers towards unlawful portals that do not deduct tax, sector experts had said. Online gaming witnessed a spurt during the time of Covid lockdown with the number of users in India rising substantially. As per a KPMG report, the online gaming sector would grow to Rs 29,000 crore by 2024-25 from Rs 13,600 crore in 2021. Ministers' panel may recommend 28% GST on online gaming with a revised calculation formula

The <keyword id="6371973" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Karnataka-high-court" source="Orion">Karnataka High Court</keyword> on Monday struck down provisions of the <keyword id="6354780" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="karnataka" source="Orion">Karnataka</keyword> Police (Amendment) Act, 2021 that banned online games. The division bench headed by the Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi and Justice Krishna S. Dixit gave the order. The bench said in its order that in the 'Karnataka Act number 28/2021 to the extent the provisions, (not the entire Act) declared to be ultra vires to the Constitution of India and struck down. The consequences of striking down the provisions shall follow.' "However, nothing in this judgment shall be construed to prevent an appropriate legislation be brought about concerning the subject i.e; betting and gambling in accordance with the provisions of the constitution. A writ of mandamus is issued restraining the respondents from interfering with online gaming business and allied activities of the petitioners," the order said. The Karnataka Police (Amendment) Bill, 2021 was mooted by ruling BJP to amend the Karnataka Police Act 1963, in the Monsoon session. The BJP leaders claimed that they were introducing the Bill to ban online gaming in the interest of people. The law included all forms of wagering or betting in connection with any game of chance barring horse racing. However, the new law was opposed by online gaming companies and it was said that the policy would affect the prospectus of the city which is emerging as a hub of online gaming companies. The new Act banned all formats of online games involving wagering, betting and gambling of all nature and forms in the state. Under the new legislation, online gaming was considered a non-bailable offence with a fine of Rs 1 lakh and imprisonment up to three years. Along with banning games of skills, the government had also categorised online games using electronic means and virtual currency, electronic transfer of funds in connection with any game as gambling. The new legislation was passed in the Monsoon session by both the Houses of the legislature in Karnataka. Mobile Premier League (MPL) was one of the first companies to stall its operations in Karnataka. Paytm First Games was also locked. The online gaming companies moved to the court questioning the new legislation. Similar law was also challenged in Tamil Nadu and online gaming operators got relief against the government order from the High Court. The Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) had stated that the new legislation by the government will dent the image of Karnataka as a startup hub and the state exchequer will see a huge revenue deficit. It also maintained that with the new legislation offshore gamblers will flourish. Sources say that the state has more than 100 gaming companies with a workforce of 4,000. According to Statista, the market value of mobile gaming in India was estimated to reach about $405 million by 2022. The number of mobile phone gamers was anticipated to be around 628 million by 2020 according to the forecast. Another report by investment bank Maple Capital Advisors titled Gaming – India Story stated that by 2024, the overall gaming industry in India is set to be valued at $3,750 million. The lockdown, while hitting most industries hard, has come as a boost for the Indian gaming industry. In the past few months, we have seen people not just take to offline games to spend time with family, a lot of them are enjoying their me-time playing different kinds of online games. Made-in-India games like Ludo King have witnessed an unprecedented growth, not just in India but even outside India. Q) There has been an overall increase in people taking up gaming from smaller cities. What kind of growth have you witnessed coming in from smaller cities and what are the factors that have accelerated this growth? MPL has always had a substantial presence in Tier II and Tier III cities across the country. A lot of the growth of gaming in smaller cities can be attributed to 4G data and smartphones easily available to more people. We also foresee more growth in this regard as internet and smartphone penetration increases across the country. One of our first digital sports scholars, VS Rathanvel is from Coimbatore and he won the first Chess Mahayudhorganised by MPL in July 2019. The runner-up in the same competition was Ankit Rajpara, who is from Mehsana in Gujarat. Q) What is your revenue model right now? What kind of increase have you seen in in-app purchases in recent months? Are you witnessing people from smaller cities also spend money on gaming? We have seen an increase in our users participating in paid contests and tournaments. Q) How have you been marketing your platform? We just partnered with Kolkata Knight Riders and its sister franchise in the Caribbean- Trinbago Knight Riders - as their principal sponsor. Recently, we even sponsored the Irish Men’s Cricket team for the ODI series against England. These are some of our current marquee brand marketing activities. We also command a good presence in television and digital advertisements and we ensure that the messaging is simple, honest and that it resonates with our audience. Q) Where do you think the next phase of growth for MPL will come from? We are a platform, with a variety of games and content cutting across categories. We will look to add more games from various game developers. Our live-streaming feature for audio and video has also picked up so we are excited about that as well. Q) Where does India rank when it comes to growth in online gaming? Esports has taken off in the country and we have even won a Bronze medal in the Asian Games 2018, where they had esports for the first time. We have a lot of talent in gaming and esports and with the industry becoming mainstream, we can hope to do better on the world stage. Q) What is your vision for MPL? We aim to become a one-stop shop platform for gamers and game developers. We already have 50+ games on our app and have over 15 gaming studios as our developer partners. We want to work with more and more indigenous game developers and give them a platform to showcase their games to our user base.
