From writing content and composing poetry to helping with research and writing code, the AI chatbot can do things that were earlier considered to be exclusive to human beings. After ChatGPT’s launch, several other companies including Microsoft and Google also launched their own AI chatbots. Today, chatbots from various companies are being widely used by people for various purposes. But do you know where the chatbots get their information from? One source is the data you enter while talking to the chatbot (same is mentioned in the form of disclaimers and you can even opt out of them). The other is data from online sources which is mostly the content created by other individuals and companies available publicly. And this has been a source of debate for a long time. Microsoft AI division CEO Mustafa Suleyman was in the news last month for saying that anyone can use the data available on the internet. However, Reddit CEO opposes this viewpoint and was recently making headlines for asking Microsoft to pay for using the data on Reddit. In the last few months, there have been various reports of content creators, actors, and companies taking action against AI companies for scraping their data to train their own AI models. Let us take a look at some of them. <h2>1. Microsoft</h2>Last week, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman made headlines for demanding that companies like Microsoft should pay for using the site’s data to train their AI models. A report in The Verge quoted Huffman saying that without such agreements, Reddit has no control over how its data is used or displayed, leading them to block companies unwilling to negotiate. He specifically called out Microsoft, <keyword id="20837420" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Anthropic" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Anthropic" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Anthropic">Anthropic</keyword>, and Perplexity for refusing to come to terms. The Verge report added that Huffman also accused Microsoft of using Reddit’s data to train its AI and summarise content in Bing results without informing the platform. He also mentioned that Reddit’s data has been sold through the Bing API to other search engines. Referencing Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman’s comment, Huffman said that Microsoft, Anthropic, and Perplexity seem to believe all internet content is free for their use. <h2>2. Stability AI</h2>In March this year, Midjourney announced a ban on Stability AI employees from using its service, accusing them of causing a system outage by scraping Midjourney's data. On March 2nd, Midjourney reported on its Discord server that a prolonged server outage prevented generated images from displaying in user galleries, attributing the issue to "botnet-like activity from paid accounts" linked to Stability AI employees. According to a report in The Verge, during a business update call on March 6th, Midjourney claimed the outage occurred because "someone at Stability AI was trying to grab all the prompt and image pairs in the middle of the night on Saturday." The company traced multiple paid accounts back to a member of Stability AI's data team. Consequently, Midjourney indefinitely banned all Stability AI employees from using its service and introduced a new policy to ban employees from any company involved in "aggressive automation" or causing service outages. <h2>3. Runway</h2>Google-backed AI startup Runway was in the limelight last month for accusations of scraping thousands of YouTube videos without authorisation to train its AI video creation model. The allegations came to light through a leaked internal spreadsheet obtained by 404 Media. The spreadsheet, allegedly shared by a former Runway employee, outlined plans to categorise and tag content from over 3,900 YouTube channels, including big names like Disney, Netflix, and well-known YouTubers such as Casey Neistat and Marques Brownlee (MKBHD). This data was purportedly used to develop Runway's Gen-3 AI video creation model, previously known as "Jupiter." Runway did not verify the authenticity of the spreadsheet. The company had earlier claimed it used "curated, internal datasets" for training but did not disclose further details. Prominent YouTubers like MKBHD and MrWhoseTheBoss voiced their concerns on social media about the whole incident. MKBHD disclosed that over 1,600 of his videos had been scraped, while MrWhoseTheBoss described the practice as "scary," revealing that 1,600 of his videos were also used. <h2>4. OpenAI</h2>In May this year, Hollywood actress <keyword id="20353350" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Scarlett-Johansson" source="keywords">Scarlett Johansson</keyword> sued OpenAI for using her voice likeness without asking for permission. OpenAI, on the other hand, had claimed that the voice in question belonged to other actors and not Johansson. Later that month, it was revealed that ChatGPT’s Sky voice (the voice in question) was being taken down. Johansson had also said that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman had approached her twice for allowing them to clone her voice for the AI chatbot. However, she had declined the offer. Meanwhile Altman, in an interview with NBC News, said that Sky was not based on Johansson's voice. He explained that a professional actor recorded the voice, but the actor's identity cannot be revealed for privacy reasons. "We cast the voice actor behind Sky’s voice before any outreach to Ms. Johansson. Out of respect for Ms. Johansson, we have paused using Sky’s voice in our products. We are sorry to Ms. Johansson that we didn’t communicate better," he had said. <h2>5. Anthropic</h2>American AI startup Anthropic also found itself in the middle of a controversy last month. The startup faced accusations of aggressively scraping data from various websites to train its systems. A report in Financial Times said that Matt Barrie, CEO of Freelancer.com, claimed that Anthropic was "the most aggressive scraper by far" of his freelancing portal, which sees millions of daily visits. Other web publishers echoed Barrie’s concerns, stating that Anthropic's bots were inundating their sites and ignoring requests to stop collecting content for training purposes. Freelancer.com recorded 3.5 million visits from an Anthropic-linked web crawler within just four hours, according to data shared with the Financial Times. Barrie noted that this volume was "probably about five times the number two" AI crawler. Despite attempts to block access using standard web protocols, visits from Anthropic's bots continued to rise, prompting Barrie to block traffic from Anthropic’s internet addresses entirely. Anthropic responded by stating that it was investigating the issue and aimed to respect publishers' requests, striving not to be "intrusive or disruptive." The Financial Times also quoted Kyle Wiens, CEO of iFixit.com, who reported receiving 1 million hits from Anthropic bots in 24 hours. "We have a load of alarms [for high traffic], people get woken up at 3am. This set off every alarm we have," Wiens said. Examples of this type of abuse, according to <a href="https://www.evolvecounselingaz.com/dr-elizabeth-fedrick" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Elizabeth Fedrick</a>, a licensed professional counselor and founder of <a href="https://www.evolvecounselingaz.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Evolve Counseling</a>, include:<ul><li>Physical violence and aggression</li><li>Verbal insults</li><li>Emotional abuse, like invalidating emotions</li><li>Psychological abuse, like blame-shifting</li><li>Financial control</li><li>Stalking and harassment </li></ul>Anyone can experience domestic abuse, no matter their age, gender, race, or sexuality, and <a href="https://www.hindawi.com/journals/isrn/2013/347235/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">any type of abuse can negatively impact</a> your overall well-being, sense of security, and ability to manage your life.Note: Many experts now refer to domestic abuse as "intimate partner violence" or "relationship abuse." Malone says these new, more inclusive terms can apply to someone you're dating but don't live with.Abuse is never your fault. The first step to stopping the cycle, though, involves recognizing what's happening. Experts recommend taking note of these 9 <a href="https://www.insider.com/signs-loved-one-is-in-abusive-relationship-gabby-petito-2021-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener">red flags</a>:<h2>1. Constant put-downs disguised as jokes</h2>One common form of <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/sex-relationships/verbal-abuse" target="_blank" rel="noopener">verbal abuse</a> is belittling or demeaning comments, especially in public, Fedrick says. These comments could be about how you dress, what you do for a living, or anything else.And if you speak up and tell your partner you don't appreciate it, they may say, "I was just kidding," or " Can't you take a joke?" in an attempt to dismiss your feelings and make you feel "crazy" or "silly" for being upset.They may also imply, if not say outright, that you're too sensitive, in an effort to shun any responsibility for how their words hurt you.This form of control is meant to erode your self-esteem, Fedrick says. "This can greatly impact your general self-worth, which can result in symptoms of <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/mental-health/what-is-anxiety" target="_blank" rel="noopener">anxiety</a> or <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/mental-health/what-is-depression" target="_blank" rel="noopener">depression</a>," Fedrick says. "This can also lead to fears around being in a public setting with your partner, as you become unsure of what they'll say or how they'll act."<h2>2. Attempts to control your life decisions</h2>Dictating who you can and can't spend time with, what you can and can't wear, and how you can or can't spend your money are just a few examples of <a href="https://www.insider.com/signs-your-partner-too-controlling-2018-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener">controlling behavior</a>. Fedrick says these behaviors often begin subtly, with complaints or "suggestions." Then, as your partner becomes more comfortable exerting control, the "suggestions" may become demands.Eventually, you might feel unable to make decisions for yourself, which can take a toll on your <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/mental-health/low-self-esteem" target="_blank" rel="noopener">self-esteem</a> and sense of identity, Fedrick says."Over time, you may lose confidence in your abilities and this can affect other areas of your life," Malone says.<h2>3. Explosive, unpredictable behavior</h2>It's natural for people to feel angry now and then — but how you express your anger matters. An abusive partner can use explosive anger to intimidate you so you're less likely to question or challenge them. You may find yourself "walking on eggshells" around them for fear of triggering their rage, Fedrick says."It's a control tactic used to make you feel anxious and afraid, so you give in to what the abuser wants," says Kara Nassour, a licensed professional counselor and founder of <a href="https://www.shadedboughcounseling.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Shaded Bough Counseling</a>. Nassour goes on to say that you might become afraid to:<ul><li>Speak up for yourself</li><li>Disagree with your partner</li><li>Set boundaries with them</li></ul><h2>4. Ignoring and crossing your boundaries</h2><a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/sex-relationships/boundaries-in-relationships" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Boundaries</a> refer to the limits you set in a relationship that dictate what kind of behavior you won't accept. For example, you might set a boundary that you won't tolerate yelling during an argument, or you don't feel comfortable sharing passwords for devices. According to Malone, boundaries can frustrate, irritate, or anger abusive partners because they threaten their sense of power over you. "Setting a boundary is an assertion of reclaimed control," Malone says.Your partner might demonstrate a lack of respect for your boundaries by:<ul><li>Repeatedly questioning them</li><li>Crossing or pushing against them to determine what they can get away with</li><li>Guilt-tripping you for even having them</li><li>Ignoring them altogether</li></ul>As a result, you may give up on trying to express or reinforce them, which allows them to exert even more control.<h2>5. Excessive jealousy and possessiveness</h2><a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/mental-health/jealousy" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jealousy</a> is a natural human instinct, but when a partner starts acting on their jealousy or using it to justify abusive behavior, that's not OK, Nassour says. Maybe they:<ul><li>Constantly accuse you of cheating on them or flirting with others</li><li>Lash out at you for spending time with certain friends when they aren't present</li><li>Get mad at you for talking to other people at a social event</li></ul>You might then become more socially withdrawn or struggle with feelings of guilt and shame. Nassour says you may even subconsciously alter your behavior — like what you wear and who you hang out with — just to avoid upsetting your partner. <h2>6. Snooping or spying</h2>In some cases, abusive partners might use jealousy as a justification to read your texts or emails. Or, they may demand the passwords to your social media accounts so they can "keep tabs" on your communications. Every relationship is different, and only you and your partner can decide your boundaries around sharing devices or information. That said, a partner who accesses your communications and activities without your consent is violating your trust and right to privacy.If you know your partner is <a href="https://www.insider.com/why-people-snoop-on-their-partners-2018-6" target="_blank" rel="noopener">snooping</a> on your devices, you may feel unsafe communicating with loved ones or develop anxiety about how messages from your friends or family will be interpreted, says Teri Schroeder, a licensed clinical social worker and cofounder of <a href="https://justmind.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Just Mind Counseling</a>.<h2>7. Minimizing or denying your feelings and experiences</h2>One of the subtlest and most damaging forms of domestic abuse is a pattern of invalidation, Schroeder says. By denying your feelings and experiences, an abusive partner can leave you questioning your own reality. Some examples include:<ul><li>Saying you're overreacting when something they do upsets you</li><li>Insisting you're exaggerating or lying when you confront them about something they did or said</li><li>Dismissing your needs or requests</li><li>Invalidating your emotions or telling you how you "should" feel </li><li>Suggesting your needs or wants are unreasonable or calling you selfish for having them</li></ul>According to Schroeder, this pattern of behavior allows abusive partners to maintain control because it can lead you to second-guess your emotional responses and memories. <h2>What is gaslighting?</h2>This form of manipulation, often known as <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/sex-relationships/gaslighting-examples" target="_blank" rel="noopener">gaslighting</a>, can also be used to minimize abuse or defer blame. Gaslighting is also <a href="https://www.asanet.org/sites/default/files/attach/journals/oct19asrfeature.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">linked to other patterns of controlling behavior</a>, like denying you access to your social networks. This form of abuse is also covert and hard to recognize, which makes it particularly damaging.<h2>8. Limiting your access to money or dictating how you spend it</h2><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/signs-financial-abuse-experts-2022-1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Financial abuse</a>, also known as economic abuse, happens when a partner: <ul><li><a href="https://www.womenshealth.gov/relationships-and-safety/other-types/financial-abuse" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Takes control of your money</a></li><li>Withholds it from you and restricts your spending</li><li>Conceals financial information from you</li></ul>Research suggests that financial abuse happens in <a href="https://centerforfinancialsecurity.files.wordpress.com/2015/04/adams2011.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">99% of domestic abuse cases</a>. This type of abuse often starts off subtly. For example, they may gently suggest they take care of all the finances since you have a lot on your plate. Gradually, however, it can often become more overt, such as when they make it impossible for you to access bank accounts without their permission.<a href="https://nnedv.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/Library_EJ_Financial_Abuse_Fact_Sheet.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Examples of financial abuse</a> include:<ul><li>Making significant spending, banking, or investment decisions without consulting you</li><li>Giving you an "allowance" </li><li>Running up debt on joint accounts and ruining your credit score</li><li>Not allowing you to work, forcing you to quit your job, or sabotaging your career opportunities</li><li>Hiding or lying about assets</li><li>Demanding to see receipts and constantly questioning your purchases or reprimanding you about them</li></ul>A <a href="https://bmcpublichealth.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12889-021-10904-8" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2021 study</a> of women in India linked financial abuse to severe depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts. The more forms of financial abuse someone experienced, the more likely they were to experience depression and anxiety.Financial abuse can also make you feel trapped in the relationship. You may feel financially dependent on your partner and worry you won't be able to pay for housing and other necessities if you leave.<h2>9. Using threats to keep you around</h2>When an abusive partner senses a loss of control in the relationship, Schroeder says they may resort to threats in an effort to regain some power. For example, they might say "if you walk out that door, I'm never speaking to you again," to get you to stay after a toxic fight. They might also threaten to harm themselves — or others — if you break up with them. Threats are <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/mental-health/emotional-abuse" target="_blank" rel="noopener">emotional abuse</a>. By instilling fear about what they might do if you leave, they put you in an impossible situation where you feel you have no choice but to stay.Remember: If a partner threatens physical harm to themselves or other people, you don't have to navigate that traumatic situation on your own. This loved one can help validate your experiences and provide emotional support.When the abuse has triggered intense and overwhelming emotions, it can be hard to figure out what to do next. So, even if you don't feel able to leave right away, you can begin protecting yourself by <a href="https://www.domesticshelters.org/articles/safety-planning/a-safety-planning-worksheet" target="_blank" rel="noopener">devising a safety plan</a>. A safety plan includes a list of clear steps to take and people to call when you feel like you're in danger, as well as helpful strategies you plan to use to cope with emotional distress related to abuse."Know who you can call that will provide an encouraging ear or a safe place to spend time when needed," Malone says. "I also encourage clients to have code words with friends and family members, which they can use to warn them if they're in an unsafe environment."Be specific about what actions you want your loved ones to take when you use this code word. For example, you might have a code word that cues them to come over, call you, or contact the police.Important: An abusive partner might hide your phone or keys during a conflict, Fedrick says. She recommends writing down contact information and keeping this in a safe, accessible place like your wallet, along with a spare car key. You might include numbers for:<ul><li>Friends and family</li><li>Law enforcement</li><li>Domestic abuse hotlines</li><li>Your therapist</li></ul>It can also help to pack a small <a href="https://www.loveisrespect.org/resources/how-to-make-a-go-bag-when-leaving-an-abusive-relationship/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">"go bag"</a> of essentials so you're ready to leave immediately whenever necessary, Nassour says. <ul class="summary-list"><li>A new documentary, "Against All Enemies," explores the link between military veterans and extremism.</li><li>Producer Ken Harbaugh told Insider veterans looking for purpose are at risk of radicalization.</li></ul>Of the more than 1,000 people who were charged with a crime for their participation in the <a href="https://www.insider.com/all-the-us-capitol-pro-trump-riot-arrests-charges-names-2021-1">January 6 attack on the Capitol</a>, nearly <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/1-in-5-charged-in-capitol-riot-veterans-active-duty-2021-1">1 in 5 was a US military veteran</a>.While leaders of extremist groups like the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers were ultimately <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-prison-sentence-penalty-if-convicted-of-seditious-conspiracy-2022-6">convicted for seditious conspiracy</a> for their deliberate attempts to breach the Capitol, critics argue their influence on military veterans — and the subsequent impact on society — has not yet been fully realized due to the adoption of their radical ideology by mainstream Republican politicians."Against All Enemies," a documentary that explores the risk of veterans being radicalized by extremist groups, was featured at this year's Tribeca Film Festival, earning glowing reviews from critics. <a href="https://variety.com/2023/film/reviews/against-all-enemies-review-1235639405/">Variety</a> called the documentary "a grim diagnosis of a fast-spreading cancer," that "may provide much less reassurance than cause for alarm, but its wakeup call is certainly worth heeding."Ken Harbaugh, a former Navy pilot, cofounder of <a href="https://teamrubiconusa.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Team Rubicon</a>, and producer of the new documentary, spoke with Insider about why being aware of the problem is only the first step toward a solution. "Against All Enemies" will have its theatrical release in early 2024.Tell me about how "Against All Enemies" came about as a project and the road it took you down.I'm a military vet and spent a lot of my time after the service trying to figure out how to productively engage veterans making that transition from military to civilian life through my work co-founding Team Rubicon, an NGO that mobilizes veterans to aid in disaster response. And on January 6, I just recall stopping the car in the driveway and listening in horror to the coverage as it played out, and in the days afterward, realizing how many of my brothers-in-arms were involved. The numbers do suggest that veterans were disproportionately represented, but the real data point that I think is lost in all of that noise is why veterans are so specifically targeted for recruitment by groups like the Oath Keepers, Three Percenters, and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/proud-boy-leader-enrique-tarrio-sentencing-abruptly-canceled-court-emergency-2023-8">Proud Boys</a>.Why are veterans targeted as recruits for this kind of radical ideology? It's because, in military speak, they act as force multipliers. The same reason that Fortune 500 companies and elite nonprofits and Ivy League programs try to recruit veterans is why the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/oath-keepers-the-far-right-militia-tried-to-overthrow-democracy-2022-12">Oath Keepers</a> try to recruit them: because when they set their sights on a mission, they go after it. They know how to organize; they know how to plan and lead. And that is great to have if GE or Amazon can recruit them. But it is incredibly dangerous if where they wind up is with the Proud Boys.Can you tell me why the path toward the Oath Keepers, the Proud Boys, or the Three Percenters might be an attractive one for a veteran?That's not mysterious. People join the military for a variety of reasons, but a universal experience of being in the military is the feeling of camaraderie, a sense of purpose and mission. The desire for it doesn't disappear along with the uniform, and people look to recapture that in other ways. I remember my own experience with that, literally at the stroke of a pen when I signed the form that got me out of the military after nine years; in an instant, my identity was gone. I had been a Navy pilot. That's who I was. That's how I thought about myself. And I was lucky. I had a family to support me, I had a pretty clear pathway into civilian life, and even then, I had this crisis of identity. And then you think about all the 20-somethings who are experiencing this and who've gone through years of combat, and it is a real crisis.What patterns do you see in the direction that things are going for veterans in the wake of pulling out of Afghanistan?There's a variety of overlapping patterns, there are good patterns and bad ones. On the good side, there are several organizations that have stepped up and tried to fill this void, like Team Rubicon. On the other side, you have groups like the Oath Keepers, Proud Boys, and <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-three-percenters-militia-group-protecting-gop-lawmakers-in-oregon-2019-6">Three Percenters</a> who have also stepped into this void, and they are picking off veterans who are vulnerable to the kind of misinformation that is just so ubiquitous now. These misinformation echo chambers can drag people down these rabbit holes and into these communities that are incredibly toxic and destructive and lead nowhere good. In the aftermath of every American military misadventure, membership in extremist organizations spikes. We saw it after World War I with the resurgence of the KKK, we saw it after Korea and Vietnam. What we don't know as a society is what happens to that phenomenon after the longest wars in American history: Iraq and Afghanistan. We do know the answer is nothing good. But I think we're beginning to see some of the fruits of that.Are there commonalities in the ideology among extremist groups recruiting online in the ways they attract veterans for membership?Well, I think the starting point is often a grievance narrative. A feeling of disenchantment or loss of community or anger at the government. And some of that anger is entirely appropriate, but that's often the start of it, and that anger and disenchantment can be amped up in some of these chat rooms that tell you that your problems are the fault of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-presidency-win-us-economic-crisis-george-soros-2023-8">George Soros</a> — or whatever their chosen code word is. And those are gateways into the deeper pits that are just filled with racism and antisemitism. Often it doesn't start that way. It starts with, "Hey, why don't you join this group that wants to take care of you, wants to restore that sense of brotherhood and camaraderie." And the deeper you get into it, the worse it gets.From your perspective, what does the anti-democracy side stand to gain from continuing to push this this narrative to veterans?I think there are a lot of individual motivations, and you have to look at each of them to get a real understanding. Mike Flynn's motivations are probably different than someone like Marjorie Taylor Greene's. I think the former realizes that his best chance of avoiding real jail time is continuing to advance the Big Lie in hopes of animating his base and getting Trump reelected. But the real tragedy for me is that many of the foot soldiers of this movement, the people you saw charging the barricades on January 6, actually believe in the cause. They actually think they're on the right side of the Constitution. And it's because people like <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/josh-hawley-patrick-henry-quote-segregationist-newspaper-fourth-july-2023-7">Josh Hawley</a>, who was at Yale Law School at the same time I was, and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jd-vance-issue-1-ohio-constitution-abortion-populism-2023-7">JD Vance</a>, who was there slightly before me, keep on feeding them these lies that they know are lies. And those are the real villains in my book. What is the significance of January 6 in this conversation? I mean, you cannot do a film about extremism in this country and the way veterans are attracted to it without talking about January 6, but the critical point we make is that January 6 wasn't some crescendo of violence. It was a dry run. And a lot of the times when I see some of these prosecutions — which has to happen, we have to hold people accountable — it makes me wonder about all the people who aren't being rounded up. And there's a footnote to that, which I think is the scariest aspect of all of this, which is that the real provocateurs, the instigators, may never be held accountable because they hold senior positions in a major American political party. You have to go back to one of the later iterations of the KKK in the '20s in the Deep South to find an era in American politics where a violent insurrectionist movement captured a major political party. And that led to just generations of terror locally, but there's the potential for that nationally if a violent movement can co-opt enough of a major American political party.Is something that you're concerned about from your vantage point?Everyone should be. I mean, how much clearer of a signal can you get? A major party is being co-opted by terrorists and the leader of that party is telling the members of that terrorist movement to stand back and stand by in case he is not reelected. Proud Boys were told on a presidential debate stage to stand back and stand by. This is an organization that's been declared a terrorist outfit by Canada, our closest ally, and the President of the United States told them to stand by. Add to that all of the other signals we're getting from senior influencers and people with actual elected positions within the Republican Party, calling the January 6 rioters political prisoners. You have people like <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/aug/25/sarah-palin-us-civil-war-donald-trump-prosecutions">Sarah Palin</a> warning about civil war. <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/4190468-huckabee-2024-will-be-last-election-decided-by-ballots-rather-than-bullets-if-trump-loses-over-legal-cases/">Mike Huckabee</a> just said if Trump is denied another win, the next election is not going to be decided at the ballot box, it will be decided by bullets. You have <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/michael-flynn-said-us-should-have-a-coup-like-myanmar-2021-5">Mike Flynn</a> saying, we need a coup in this country like they had in Myanmar. This is not me paraphrasing or exaggerating. These are clarion calls for violence coming from senior figures on the right, influential figures, mainstream figures. These aren't fringe characters; they are representative of the mainstream, and that's scary.How do you combat that toxic rhetoric and the mentality of political persecution that further entrenches people into that ideology?Well, it depends on who I'm talking to. When trying to counter the deep state paranoia, or talking to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-people-believe-conspiracy-theory-overconfidence-2023-1">conspiracy theorists</a>, there's nothing you can do or say because any evidence you provide is just evidence of an even deeper conspiracy. Some people are unreachable. There isn't a middle ground when you're talking about autocracy and democracy; there isn't a halfway point. It's like arguing with flat earthers. The truth isn't somewhere between a round earth and a flat earth. When you look at January 6, I think the only answer to people like Georgia Congressman <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gun-store-congress-andrew-clyde-georgia-2022-5">Andrew Clyde</a>, who said it was just a "normal tourist visit" is: You are lying. You are a vet. You know better. You helped barricade the house galley and you were screaming and pointing in a photo with Capitol policemen who had their guns drawn, pointing at that single point of entry. And yet, a few days later, you're on TV, calling it a peaceful tourist visit? I think the only way to counter something like that is to call it what it is: disinformation.Are you hopeful about people responding well to the lies being called out?I'm always hopeful. I am always bullish on America. I think we have been through a few things worse. The scary thing about saying that is, you know, people point to the 1860s and say, "Hey, we've survived worse before" and yes, we did. But we fought a civil war over it. I think this will only get better if people stand up en masse and say the election wasn't stolen. Your grievances are made up. You're not the ones defending the Constitution; you're actually undermining it. We need not just those lone voices in the wilderness like <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/liz-cheney-were-electing-idiots-trump-2024-gop-023-6">Liz Cheney</a> and <a href="https://www.insider.com/adam-kinzinger-my-party-failed-the-american-people-at-truth-2022-6">Adam Kinzinger</a>, who are brave enough to tell the truth and lose their jobs for it, but we need a chorus of those kinds of influencers saying that there really is only one side of this pro-democracy argument. And that's the pro-democracy side.

America's veterans are the prime target for domestic terrorists — as recruits

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Domestic abuse includes physical violence but also put-downs, manipulation, and control tactics. </li><li>Abusive partners may challenge boundaries or guilt-trip you for questioning their actions. </li></ul>You don't have to live with someone to be the victim of domestic abuse, says <a href="https://www.mindpath.com/staff/taish-malone-lpc-phd/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dr. Taish Malone</a>, a licensed professional counselor with <a href="https://www.mindpath.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mindpath Health</a>.Domestic abuse refers to any pattern of behavior someone uses to gain or maintain power and <a href="https://www.insider.com/coercive-control-how-to-spot-emotionally-abusive-relationship-2022-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener">control</a> over you in relationships. Examples of this type of abuse, according to <a href="https://www.evolvecounselingaz.com/dr-elizabeth-fedrick" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Elizabeth Fedrick</a>, a licensed professional counselor and founder of <a href="https://www.evolvecounselingaz.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Evolve Counseling</a>, include:<ul><li>Physical violence and aggression</li><li>Verbal insults</li><li>Emotional abuse, like invalidating emotions</li><li>Psychological abuse, like blame-shifting</li><li>Financial control</li><li>Stalking and harassment </li></ul>Anyone can experience domestic abuse, no matter their age, gender, race, or sexuality, and <a href="https://www.hindawi.com/journals/isrn/2013/347235/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">any type of abuse can negatively impact</a> your overall well-being, sense of security, and ability to manage your life.Note: Many experts now refer to domestic abuse as "intimate partner violence" or "relationship abuse." Malone says these new, more inclusive terms can apply to someone you're dating but don't live with.Abuse is never your fault. The first step to stopping the cycle, though, involves recognizing what's happening. Experts recommend taking note of these 9 <a href="https://www.insider.com/signs-loved-one-is-in-abusive-relationship-gabby-petito-2021-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener">red flags</a>:<h2>1. Constant put-downs disguised as jokes</h2>One common form of <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/sex-relationships/verbal-abuse" target="_blank" rel="noopener">verbal abuse</a> is belittling or demeaning comments, especially in public, Fedrick says. These comments could be about how you dress, what you do for a living, or anything else.And if you speak up and tell your partner you don't appreciate it, they may say, "I was just kidding," or " Can't you take a joke?" in an attempt to dismiss your feelings and make you feel "crazy" or "silly" for being upset.They may also imply, if not say outright, that you're too sensitive, in an effort to shun any responsibility for how their words hurt you.This form of control is meant to erode your self-esteem, Fedrick says. "This can greatly impact your general self-worth, which can result in symptoms of <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/mental-health/what-is-anxiety" target="_blank" rel="noopener">anxiety</a> or <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/mental-health/what-is-depression" target="_blank" rel="noopener">depression</a>," Fedrick says. "This can also lead to fears around being in a public setting with your partner, as you become unsure of what they'll say or how they'll act."<h2>2. Attempts to control your life decisions</h2>Dictating who you can and can't spend time with, what you can and can't wear, and how you can or can't spend your money are just a few examples of <a href="https://www.insider.com/signs-your-partner-too-controlling-2018-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener">controlling behavior</a>. Fedrick says these behaviors often begin subtly, with complaints or "suggestions." Then, as your partner becomes more comfortable exerting control, the "suggestions" may become demands.Eventually, you might feel unable to make decisions for yourself, which can take a toll on your <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/mental-health/low-self-esteem" target="_blank" rel="noopener">self-esteem</a> and sense of identity, Fedrick says."Over time, you may lose confidence in your abilities and this can affect other areas of your life," Malone says.<h2>3. Explosive, unpredictable behavior</h2>It's natural for people to feel angry now and then — but how you express your anger matters. An abusive partner can use explosive anger to intimidate you so you're less likely to question or challenge them. You may find yourself "walking on eggshells" around them for fear of triggering their rage, Fedrick says."It's a control tactic used to make you feel anxious and afraid, so you give in to what the abuser wants," says Kara Nassour, a licensed professional counselor and founder of <a href="https://www.shadedboughcounseling.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Shaded Bough Counseling</a>. Nassour goes on to say that you might become afraid to:<ul><li>Speak up for yourself</li><li>Disagree with your partner</li><li>Set boundaries with them</li></ul><h2>4. Ignoring and crossing your boundaries</h2><a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/sex-relationships/boundaries-in-relationships" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Boundaries</a> refer to the limits you set in a relationship that dictate what kind of behavior you won't accept. For example, you might set a boundary that you won't tolerate yelling during an argument, or you don't feel comfortable sharing passwords for devices. According to Malone, boundaries can frustrate, irritate, or anger abusive partners because they threaten their sense of power over you. "Setting a boundary is an assertion of reclaimed control," Malone says.Your partner might demonstrate a lack of respect for your boundaries by:<ul><li>Repeatedly questioning them</li><li>Crossing or pushing against them to determine what they can get away with</li><li>Guilt-tripping you for even having them</li><li>Ignoring them altogether</li></ul>As a result, you may give up on trying to express or reinforce them, which allows them to exert even more control.<h2>5. Excessive jealousy and possessiveness</h2><a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/mental-health/jealousy" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jealousy</a> is a natural human instinct, but when a partner starts acting on their jealousy or using it to justify abusive behavior, that's not OK, Nassour says. Maybe they:<ul><li>Constantly accuse you of cheating on them or flirting with others</li><li>Lash out at you for spending time with certain friends when they aren't present</li><li>Get mad at you for talking to other people at a social event</li></ul>You might then become more socially withdrawn or struggle with feelings of guilt and shame. Nassour says you may even subconsciously alter your behavior — like what you wear and who you hang out with — just to avoid upsetting your partner. <h2>6. Snooping or spying</h2>In some cases, abusive partners might use jealousy as a justification to read your texts or emails. Or, they may demand the passwords to your social media accounts so they can "keep tabs" on your communications. Every relationship is different, and only you and your partner can decide your boundaries around sharing devices or information. That said, a partner who accesses your communications and activities without your consent is violating your trust and right to privacy.If you know your partner is <a href="https://www.insider.com/why-people-snoop-on-their-partners-2018-6" target="_blank" rel="noopener">snooping</a> on your devices, you may feel unsafe communicating with loved ones or develop anxiety about how messages from your friends or family will be interpreted, says Teri Schroeder, a licensed clinical social worker and cofounder of <a href="https://justmind.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Just Mind Counseling</a>.<h2>7. Minimizing or denying your feelings and experiences</h2>One of the subtlest and most damaging forms of domestic abuse is a pattern of invalidation, Schroeder says. By denying your feelings and experiences, an abusive partner can leave you questioning your own reality. Some examples include:<ul><li>Saying you're overreacting when something they do upsets you</li><li>Insisting you're exaggerating or lying when you confront them about something they did or said</li><li>Dismissing your needs or requests</li><li>Invalidating your emotions or telling you how you "should" feel </li><li>Suggesting your needs or wants are unreasonable or calling you selfish for having them</li></ul>According to Schroeder, this pattern of behavior allows abusive partners to maintain control because it can lead you to second-guess your emotional responses and memories. <h2>What is gaslighting?</h2>This form of manipulation, often known as <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/sex-relationships/gaslighting-examples" target="_blank" rel="noopener">gaslighting</a>, can also be used to minimize abuse or defer blame. Gaslighting is also <a href="https://www.asanet.org/sites/default/files/attach/journals/oct19asrfeature.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">linked to other patterns of controlling behavior</a>, like denying you access to your social networks. This form of abuse is also covert and hard to recognize, which makes it particularly damaging.<h2>8. Limiting your access to money or dictating how you spend it</h2><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/signs-financial-abuse-experts-2022-1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Financial abuse</a>, also known as economic abuse, happens when a partner: <ul><li><a href="https://www.womenshealth.gov/relationships-and-safety/other-types/financial-abuse" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Takes control of your money</a></li><li>Withholds it from you and restricts your spending</li><li>Conceals financial information from you</li></ul>Research suggests that financial abuse happens in <a href="https://centerforfinancialsecurity.files.wordpress.com/2015/04/adams2011.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">99% of domestic abuse cases</a>. This type of abuse often starts off subtly. For example, they may gently suggest they take care of all the finances since you have a lot on your plate. Gradually, however, it can often become more overt, such as when they make it impossible for you to access bank accounts without their permission.<a href="https://nnedv.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/Library_EJ_Financial_Abuse_Fact_Sheet.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Examples of financial abuse</a> include:<ul><li>Making significant spending, banking, or investment decisions without consulting you</li><li>Giving you an "allowance" </li><li>Running up debt on joint accounts and ruining your credit score</li><li>Not allowing you to work, forcing you to quit your job, or sabotaging your career opportunities</li><li>Hiding or lying about assets</li><li>Demanding to see receipts and constantly questioning your purchases or reprimanding you about them</li></ul>A <a href="https://bmcpublichealth.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12889-021-10904-8" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2021 study</a> of women in India linked financial abuse to severe depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts. The more forms of financial abuse someone experienced, the more likely they were to experience depression and anxiety.Financial abuse can also make you feel trapped in the relationship. You may feel financially dependent on your partner and worry you won't be able to pay for housing and other necessities if you leave.<h2>9. Using threats to keep you around</h2>When an abusive partner senses a loss of control in the relationship, Schroeder says they may resort to threats in an effort to regain some power. For example, they might say "if you walk out that door, I'm never speaking to you again," to get you to stay after a toxic fight. They might also threaten to harm themselves — or others — if you break up with them. Threats are <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/mental-health/emotional-abuse" target="_blank" rel="noopener">emotional abuse</a>. By instilling fear about what they might do if you leave, they put you in an impossible situation where you feel you have no choice but to stay.Remember: If a partner threatens physical harm to themselves or other people, you don't have to navigate that traumatic situation on your own. Calling the <a href="https://suicidepreventionlifeline.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Suicide Prevention Lifeline</a> (1-800-273-8255) or the National Domestic Violence Hotline (1-800-799-7233) will connect you to a trained expert who can help you figure out how to proceed safely.<h2>What to do next</h2>If any of the above signs sound familiar, or your partner is otherwise abusive, know that you're not alone and you have options for getting support.Malone recommends <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/mental-health/how-to-find-a-therapist" target="_blank" rel="noopener">finding a therapist</a> or support group to help you: <ul><li>Identify and work through effects of abuse</li><li>Bolster your self-esteem if it's been affected</li><li>Come up with a safety plan for leaving </li></ul>If therapy isn't accessible to you or you don't feel comfortable talking to a therapist, Fedrick suggests telling a trusted loved one about what's going on. This loved one can help validate your experiences and provide emotional support.When the abuse has triggered intense and overwhelming emotions, it can be hard to figure out what to do next. So, even if you don't feel able to leave right away, you can begin protecting yourself by <a href="https://www.domesticshelters.org/articles/safety-planning/a-safety-planning-worksheet" target="_blank" rel="noopener">devising a safety plan</a>. A safety plan includes a list of clear steps to take and people to call when you feel like you're in danger, as well as helpful strategies you plan to use to cope with emotional distress related to abuse."Know who you can call that will provide an encouraging ear or a safe place to spend time when needed," Malone says. "I also encourage clients to have code words with friends and family members, which they can use to warn them if they're in an unsafe environment."Be specific about what actions you want your loved ones to take when you use this code word. For example, you might have a code word that cues them to come over, call you, or contact the police.Important: An abusive partner might hide your phone or keys during a conflict, Fedrick says. She recommends writing down contact information and keeping this in a safe, accessible place like your wallet, along with a spare car key. You might include numbers for:<ul><li>Friends and family</li><li>Law enforcement</li><li>Domestic abuse hotlines</li><li>Your therapist</li></ul>It can also help to pack a small <a href="https://www.loveisrespect.org/resources/how-to-make-a-go-bag-when-leaving-an-abusive-relationship/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">"go bag"</a> of essentials so you're ready to leave immediately whenever necessary, Nassour says. <ul class="summary-list"><li>The <keyword id="200545" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Smithsonian">Smithsonian</keyword>'s National Museum of African American History and Culture launched an online portal to help parents, teachers, children, and communities at large talk about race. </li><li>The portal, called Talking About Race, is free to use and can be found on the museum's website. </li><li>Programming includes more than 100 online activities, videos, scholarly articles, and other multimedia <keyword id="83247" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Resources">resources</keyword>. </li></ul>The National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, DC, has launched a free portal, <a href="https://nmaahc.si.edu/learn/talking-about-race">Talking About Race,</a> with resources to help parents, teachers, caregivers, and the general public have conversations about race."Since opening the museum, the number one question we are asked is how to talk about race, especially with children," Spencer Crew, interim director of the Smithsonian museum, said in a May <a href="https://nmaahc.si.edu/about/news/national-museum-african-american-history-and-culture-releases-talking-about-race-web">press release</a> published on the museum's website.Crew said that the resources available on the portal are designed to "inform and guide discussions" through the use of videos and role-playing exercises among other activities. The museum press release said that recent racist incidents across the US led to the portal being released early. The team was hoping to make some upgrades and enhance functionality before the portal's release but decided that its recent release date on May 31 was a good time to push out the first phase; according to the museum representative, there are still tweaks and changes to be made.There are eight subjects that make up the foundation of phase one of the portal: being anti-racist; bias; community building; historical foundations of race; race and racial identity; self-care; social identities and systems of oppression; and whiteness.The portal itself is a culmination of several other projects and programs the museum is working on, the representative told Insider. Potential delays in fund disbursements could reflect poorly on banks. Expectations will be high from both customers and the government around how quickly banks can distribute loans to businesses in need. And although the funds are ultimately coming from the SBA, banks will receive the brunt of backlash from any businesses left waiting, since they are the ones that will actually be dealing with applicants.This makes it imperative that banks keep open lines of communications with customers, are transparent about the process for applying for a loan, and set realistic expectations around when the funds can be expected.Despite efforts like Citi's to smooth the lending process for small businesses, banks are in uncharted territory, and a lack of clarity will inevitably create confusion as the program gets off the ground.
