<ul class="summary-list"><li>Def Noodles, whose real name is Dennis Feitosa, will be in the Discovery docu-series about <keyword id="9321228" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="onision">Onision</keyword>.</li><li>The controversial docu-series details allegations of abusive behavior and grooming.</li><li>Feitosa runs the popular influencer watchdog page on social media platforms like Twitter and Instagram.</li></ul><p>Def Noodles, a popular influencer watchdog account on social media, will appear in the controversial Discovery documentary series about the YouTuber Onision, AKA James "Greg" Jackson, according to press materials reviewed by Insider.</p><p>In the fourth part of the docu-series, which is set to be released on Thursday, Def Noodles, whose real name is Dennis Feitosa, is joined by other internet <keyword id="24504" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="culture">culture</keyword> experts to comment on allegations surrounding the infamous YouTuber Onision.</p><p>Def Noodles has become a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTUVdRca6Xc">polarizing figure</a> himself in the YouTube commentary community. Feitosa has been known to at times to seriously report on internet culture <keyword id="6355005" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="news">news</keyword>, while also sometimes taking a satirical approach, which has caused some confusion. He's also been accused of taking <a href="https://twitter.com/FeebsJust/status/1396616435699437573?s=20https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=toWykZWp01Y">certain aspects of stories out of context</a>.</p><p>The documentary series has laid out the multiple allegations of abusive behavior and grooming against Onision. Onision has previously denied allegations of predatory behavior and grooming.</p><p>The documentary itself has also been controversial. Much of the criticism of it has revolved around <keyword id="1517826" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Chris-Hansen">Chris Hansen</keyword>'s involvement. Hansen, best known for his now-defunct "To Catch A Predator" series on NBC, was filmed in on-camera interviews for the project.</p><p>According to <a href="https://mashable.com/article/onision-in-real-life-documentary-controversy-explained/">Mashable's Morgan Sung</a>, several women who accused Onision of predatory behavior were interviewed on Chris Hansen's YouTube live stream called "Have a Seat with Chris Hansen" in late 2019. Numerous questions were raised by journalists and subjects about the production of Hansen's show, eventually resulting in the firing of one of Hansen's producers.  </p><p>Sung <a href="https://mashable.com/article/onision-in-real-life-documentary-controversy-explained/">wrote</a>, "While his series undoubtedly alerted a wider audience to Onision's alleged predatory behavior, many in the YouTube community have expressed reservations about Hansen's intentions in bringing the story to a mainstream distributor like discovery+."</p><p>The documentary was still released, and after the first three parts were aired, YouTube <a href="https://www.insider.com/youtube-removes-onision-from-partner-program-after-abuse-accusations-2021-1">decided to demonetize the controversial YouTuber's videos</a>. In January 2021, he uploaded a video to YouTube and spoke about the email he received from the platform. In the email, YouTube notified him he would no longer be a part of the YouTube Partner Program, enabling creators to make money from the ads in their videos.</p><p>"Responsibility is our number one priority at YouTube, and it's important for us to ensure that creators are empowered to use their influence responsibly in the YouTube community and beyond," the email from YouTube said. "With that in mind, we recently reviewed your channels (Onision, OnisionSpeaks, and UhOhBro) and took action on content that violated our Community Guidelines."</p><p>Feitosa previously covered the drama surrounding the documentary on social media.</p><p>While the decision to demonetize Onision shocked many within the creator community, many, including the experts in the documentary, felt that the move wasn't enough being that he's still allowed to post videos on YouTube. Feitosa was one of the critics of YouTube's initiative.</p><p>"I don't think that demonetization solves the problem," Feitosa said in the new episode set to stream on Thursday. "He could easily set up a website and have his fans pay him directly. There are definitely options out there if he wants to stay on the internet."</p><p>Maggie Mabie, an attorney at the Marsh Law Firm who also appears in the fourth docu-series episode, said, "I think the fact that Onision was demonetized and not de-platformed makes it so clear that YouTube isn't listening to the victims."</p><p>Feitosa did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>An Insider poll shows the top 10 most disliked influencers currently online.</li><li>The Paul brothers, Keemstar, and <keyword id="9321228" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="onision">Onision</keyword> are still on the list after the first poll in December.</li><li>New additions include The ACE Family and Lovely Peaches.</li></ul><p>An influencer doesn't need to be liked to be profitable: Controversy, scandal, and unlikability can be major factors in driving engagement and views. Some of the most popular creators on the internet are frequently the most controversial, growing their infamy with each hot take or disliked video, as evidenced by a recent Insider poll. </p><p>Insider <a href="https://www.insider.com/jojo-siwa-coming-out-more-famous-insider-poll-2021-4">surveyed</a> over 1,000 people through SurveyMonkey Audience to find out which of over 75 influencers are the most well-known, liked, and disliked online. Insider <a href="https://www.insider.com/most-famous-influencers-insider-data-logan-paul-pewdiepie-2021-2">previously conducted a similar poll in December 2020</a>.</p><p>Here are the top 10 most-disliked influencers, according to Insider's poll. </p><h2><strong>10. David Dobrik</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="David Dobrik" height="2666" width="4000" msid="82154369" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>Starting off the list is <a href="https://www.youtube.com/c/DavidDobrik/featured">David Dobrik,</a> the YouTuber with 18.4 million subscribers and founder of Dispo, a social-media app. Throughout this year, his popularity took a sharp decline after a woman featured in <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vlog-squad-durte-dom-rape-allegation-david-dobrik-zeglaitis-video-2021-3">one of his vlogs</a> told Insider she was sexually assaulted by a former member of Dobrik's Vlog Squad. He's lost sponsorships, brand deals, and subscribers to the scandal and has since posted two apology videos. </p><p>Dobrik's unfavorability more than doubled since Insider's previous poll, bringing him to a 46% rating. </p><h2>9. <strong style="color: #000000;">Shane Dawson</strong></h2><h2><div type="image" title="Shane Dawson" height="765" width="1413" msid="82154370" hostid="261"></div></h2><p>Shane Dawson, one of YouTube's <a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCV9_KinVpV-snHe3C3n1hvA">earliest successful pioneers,</a> earns the ninth spot on the list. After having his online reputation <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-shane-dawson-went-from-king-of-youtube-to-canceled-2020-7">annihilated in 2020</a> when offensive clips resurfaced online, Dawson has all but disappeared from online discourse in recent months. </p><p>Of the 23% of survey respondents who said they knew of Dawson, 48% found him unfavorable. With Dawson seemingly out of the spotlight, it's a testament to his legacy that he is still that well known and disliked.</p><h2>8. <strong style="color: #000000;">The Ace Family</strong></h2><p><strong style="color: #000000;"><div type="image" title="bryce hall austin mcbroom fight" height="725" width="966" msid="82154371" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>Austin McBroom, Catherine Paiz, and their three children are the stars of the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCWwWOFsW68TqXE-HZLC3WIA">ACE Family</a> channel on YouTube. With 19 million subscribers and videos that pull in hundreds of thousands of views, their content mostly centers on family vlogs and tours of their mansion.</p><p>The family has been involved in controversy. McBroom has said called his fans <a href="https://www.insider.com/austin-mcbroom-ace-family-complains-people-should-pay-youtube-videos-2019-12">"ungrateful"</a> for his free content, ran a charity basketball game and <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jlG5pkwCo5M">donated $75,000</a> of the $100,000 he promised, and posted a video of his young daughter <a href="https://www.exposingsmg.com/blog/the-ace-family-is-austin-mcbroom-a-rapist">licking a penis-shaped lollipop in a sex shop. </a></p><p>Of those surveyed, 13% knew of the family, with 50% of those respondents finding them unfavorable - up 5% from the 2020 poll.  </p><h2><strong>7. Lovely Peaches</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="Lovely Peaches" height="710" width="947" msid="82154372" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>Internet provocateur and musician Brittany Johnson, known online as <a href="https://www.instagram.com/lovelypeachesmusicforever2001/?hl=en">Lovely Peaches,</a> has built up a career by being controversial. With over 100,000 subscribers on YouTube and 164,000 followers on Instagram, fans seem to watch a lot of her content just to keep up with her wild antics. <a href="https://www.insider.com/lovely-peaches-arrest-instagram-video-dog-alleged-animal-cruelty-2021-1">In January 2021,</a> she was arrested on animal-cruelty charges after allegedly picking up her dog by the neck and spraying perfume in its face.</p><p>Treating animals poorly remains a simple way to earn disdain online: 9% of those surveyed knew Johnson and 50% of those found her unfavorable. </p><h2><strong>6. <keyword id="9082331" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="jeffree-star">Jeffree Star</keyword></strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="Jeffree Star" height="1500" width="2000" msid="82154373" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCkvK_5omS-42Ovgah8KRKtg">Jeffree Star, the infamous beauty guru</a> who has been <a href="https://www.insider.com/jeffree-star-sexual-assault-allegations-violence-accused-predator-myspace-payments-2020-9">accused of</a> tasing, sexual assault, and hush-money bribes, lands at number 6 on the list. <a href="https://www.insider.com/most-disliked-hated-influencers-poll-jake-logan-paul-jeffree-star-2021-2">In Insider's last poll,</a> Star was the sixth-most-disliked. </p><p>With 16.5 million YouTube subscribers and a line of successful makeup lines, Star has found a way to monetize extreme controversy. </p><p>28% knew who he was - up from 23% in the previous poll - and 52% found him unfavorable, down 4% from last time. </p><h2>5. <strong style="color: #000000;">Zoe Laverne</strong></h2><h2><div type="image" title="Zoe Laverne visits the Young Hollywood Studio on February 7, 2020 in Los Angeles, California." height="3648" width="4864" msid="82154374" hostid="261"></div></h2><p>The 19-year-old with <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@zoelaverne?lang=en">17 million TikTok followers</a> has faced multiple controversial accusations over the course of her short career. <a href="https://www.insider.com/zoe-laverne-kiss-13-age-connor-joyce-how-old-fake-arrest-2020#now-infamous-leaked-audio-also-showed-laverne-getting-frustrated-and-proclaiming-herself-the-star-of-tiktok-7">In 2020</a>, leaked audio of Zoe Laverne insulting Charli D'Amelio went viral, and then she admitted to kissing and  "catching feelings" for a 13-year-old fan.</p><p>Most recently, in February, Laverne announced that she was pregnant with her current 20-year-old boyfriend.</p><p>Laverne held onto the same spot on the list as last time, with 6% knowing who she is and 52% disliking her. </p><h2>4. <strong style="color: #000000;">Keemstar</strong></h2><h2><div type="image" title="Keemstar Trisha Paytas" height="1080" width="1440" msid="82154375" hostid="261"></div></h2><p>One of the most infamous drama channel hosts on YouTube, Daniel Keem, known as Keemstar, earns a spot halfway through the list.</p><p>The host of DramaAlert, which has 5.8 million YouTube subscribers, Keem's online persona frequently involves trying to get a rise out of social-media users and influencers, such as with his feuds with other online personalities like <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ethan-klein-h3h3-keemstar-old-spice-sponsorship-productions-feud-2020-5">YouTuber Ethan Klein.</a> Sometimes his contoversies are radioactive, like when in 2019 he told Desmond "Etika" Amofah to "just jump off a cliff" just days before his suicide.</p><p>Recent Twitter feuds with K-Pop and Minecraft stans may have bumped Keem up from the ninth spot on the previous list.  Of the 10% who knew who he was, 57% found him unfavorable (up 10% from the previous list). </p><h2><strong>3. Logan Paul</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="Logan Paul" height="1500" width="2000" msid="82154376" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>One of YouTube's most well known and controversial figures is Logan Paul, the elder of the two Paul brothers. With over 22 million <a href="https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=logan+paul">YouTube subscribers</a>, a successful podcast and a (less successful) boxing career, Logan, 26, keeps himself busy.</p><p>Over the pandemic, he announced he was going to move to <a href="https://www.dexerto.com/entertainment/logan-paul-sparks-backlash-after-claiming-hes-moving-to-puerto-rico-over-taxes-1525594/">Puerto Rico</a> and caused the <a href="https://www.insider.com/pokemon-card-opening-day-celebration-video-logan-paul-elite-box-2021-2">Pokemon card market to explode in value</a>, but has remained fairly uncontroversial. But the stigma of his <a href="https://www.insider.com/logan-paul-podcast-controversies-drama-reputation-jake-2020-12">2018 suicide forest video</a>, where he allegedly<strong> </strong>filmed a dead body and posted it online, still hangs over his career.</p><p>Logan was the second spot on the previous list. His notoriety increased by 7 percentage points to 38%. His unfavorability rating also dropped from 68% to 64%.  </p><h2><strong style="color: #000000;">2. <keyword id="6130340" type="DEFINITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Jake-Paul">Jake Paul</keyword></strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="Jake Paul" height="1000" width="1333" msid="82154377" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>The "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCcgVECVN4OKV6DH1jLkqmcA">everyday bro"</a> follows in his brother's footsteps and drops one spot lower on this list compared to last time. Though Logan Paul has tried to stay out of controversy the past few years, his brother has done the opposite. The list of his <a href="https://www.insider.com/jake-paul-controversies-timeline-looting-scandals-racist-slurs-drama-2020-6">recent controversies is long</a>- he threw a ragerr during quarantine, his house was raided by the FBI, called COVID-19 a hoax, and was charged with trespassing in Arizona after a video circulated of him at a mall where looting and vandalism were occurring.</p><p>4% more people knew who Jake was this time around, bringing his notoriety up to 34%. His unfavorability dropped the same percentage, bringing him at 67%. </p><h2><strong style="color: #000000;">1. Onision</strong></h2><p><strong style="color: #000000;"><div type="image" title="Onision" height="748" width="998" msid="82154378" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>The top spot on our list goes to James Jackson, known as <a href="https://www.youtube.com/user/Onision">Onision</a>. He's been accused of <a href="https://www.newsweek.com/sarah-her-relationship-youtuber-onision-why-did-you-think-this-was-okay-1479119">grooming underage women</a>, body shaming in his videos, and killing a turtle he left under a plastic pool. On our last list, Jackson was only fourth but a recent docuseries released by Discovery+ may have contributed to his infamy.</p><p>On both lists, only 7% knew who Jackson was but his unfavorability grew by 16 percentage points, bringing it up to 75%. </p><p><em>SurveyMonkey Audience polls from a national sample balanced by census data of age and gender. Respondents are incentivized to complete surveys through charitable contributions. Generally speaking, digital polling tends to skew toward people with access to the internet. SurveyMonkey Audience doesn't try to weight its sample based on race or income. Recent polling data collected 1,129 respondents March 26-27, 2021 with a 3 percentage point margin of error, December data collected 1,042 respondents December 24-25, 2020 with a 3 percentage point margin of error.</em></p>

Some of YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram's biggest names have risen to fame by building their platforms on scandal; in the case of some online personalities like Jake Paul (more on him later) <a href="https://www.insider.com/cancel-culture-youtube-actually-help-a-youtubers-career-2020-12">cancelation actually serves to prolong their career.</a></p><p>Insider polled 1,040 people to <keyword id="15510" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Survey">survey</keyword> their feelings and level of familiarity with over 60 of social media's biggest names, with participants marking whether or not they knew a particular influencer or <keyword id="6355064" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Celebrity">celebrity</keyword> and whether their opinion of them was favorable or unfavorable. This included household names like Jake and <keyword id="2199400" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Logan-Paul">Logan Paul</keyword>, <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-youtube-supervillain-are-made-onision-amberlynn-reid-2020-4">YouTube "supervillains"</a> like <keyword id="9321228" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="onision">Onision</keyword>, and personalities who incorporated controversy into their brand like Instagram influencer and writer Caroline Calloway. We then looked at what percentage of people who knew about an influencer had an unfavorable opinion of them. </p><p>The data reveals influencers who, while known to the general public at varying levels, ranked highest among those whom survey participants had a negative opinion.</p><h2>10. Tana Mongeau</h2><div type="image" title="Tana Mongeau" height="1500" width="2000" msid="81004838" hostid="261"></div><p>Tana Mongeau had become one of YouTube's biggest stars by the time she hit 21 years old, mixing work online with traditional celebrity. <a href="https://www.insider.com/youtuber-tana-mongeau-interview-paris-hilton-gen-z-playlist-live-2020-3">Insider's Kat Tenbarge called her "Gen Z's Paris Hilton,"</a> and amid <a href="https://www.insider.com/tana-mongeau-new-details-season-2-no-filter-mtv-special-2019-12">reality shows</a> and vlogs, she's well-known in online circles. Still, she's been dogged by her fair share of controversy, from her <a href="https://www.inverse.com/article/46651-tanacon-is-the-latest-real-life-consequence-of-the-streaming-economy">disastrous 2018 TanaCon</a>, to a <a href="https://www.insider.com/youtubers-tana-mongeau-and-jake-paul-have-broken-up-2020-1#:~:text=The%20YouTube%20stars%20Tana%20Mongeau,they%20are%20taking%20a%20break.">brief marriage to controversial Youtuber Jake Paul</a>, to <a href="https://www.insider.com/tana-mongeau-responds-to-accusations-of-racism-and-ignorance-2020-6">racist comments that she made in the past</a>. </p><p>Out of those surveyed, 12.1% knew Tana Mongeau. 46% had an unfavorable opinion of her and 18.3% had a positive one. </p><h2>9. Keemstar</h2><div type="image" title="Keemstar" height="475" width="635" msid="81004841" hostid="261"></div><p>Daniel "Keemstar" Keem, was a pioneer of the YouTube drama channel, breaking down influencer shenanigans with the tabloid scrutiny afforded to mainstream celebrities. Since launching his famous DramaAlert channel in 2014, he's become a controversial figure in the community with a brand that, <a href="https://www.newsweek.com/youtuber-keemstar-being-half-loved-half-hated-whats-coming-next-1494539">as he told reporter Steven Asarch at Newsweek in 2020</a>, leaves him "half-loved and half-hated by design." In 2020, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/g-fuel-ends-keemstar-sponsorship-h3h3-ethan-klein-etika-2020-5">his sponsorship with energy drink company G Fuel ended</a> (with Keem saying that he "walked away") following a video from h3h3Productions' Ethan Klein that raised claims that Keem had exploited Etika, a YouTuber who died by suicide in 2019.</p><p>Out of those surveyed, 9.3% were aware of who Keemstar was and 47.4% had an unfavorable opinion of him, with 24.7% skewing favorable.</p><h2>8. Caroline Calloway</h2><div type="image" title="caroline calloway essay" height="494" width="659" msid="81004843" hostid="261"></div><p>Caroline Calloway rose as a controversial influencer figure in 2019, garnering mainstream media coverage across the board. An <a href="https://www.instagram.com/carolinecalloway/">Instagram influencer</a> who currently has 678,000 followers on the platform, has turned the accusations that she's a scam artist into a personal brand <a href="https://www.insider.com/caroline-calloway-book-deal-instagram-career-2019-1#the-workshop-series-fell-apart-7">after a workshop she planned went awry in 2019.</a> Later, her former ghostwriter <a href="https://www.thecut.com/2019/09/the-story-of-caroline-calloway-and-her-ghostwriter-natalie.html">authored a story for The Cut</a> about how she used to help Calloway write the stories that appeared on her Instagram.</p><p>Out of those surveyed, 3.2% knew Calloway, a surprise given the widespread <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/09/11/style/caroline-calloway-explainer.html">mainstream</a> <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/style/the-messiness-and-meaning-of-caroline-calloway/2019/09/13/7c84b4fe-d56c-11e9-9343-40db57cf6abd_story.html">media</a> <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2019/09/i-get-caroline-calloway/598918/">attention</a> that she's received in the past. 48.5% had an unfavorable opinion of her, while 36.4% had a favorable opinion.</p><h2>7. Zoe LaVerne</h2><div type="image" title="Zoe Laverne visits the Young Hollywood Studio on February 7, 2020 in Los Angeles, California." height="3648" width="4864" msid="81004847" hostid="261"></div><p>19-year-old Zoe LaVerne, a TikToker with over 17.5 million followers, has been <a href="https://www.insider.com/zoe-laverne-kiss-13-age-connor-joyce-how-old-fake-arrest-2020">embroiled in controversy for much of her career</a>. In late 2020, a leaked video appeared to show her kissing a 13-year-old fan that LaVerne said she had "caught feelings" for. Prior to that, she had indefinitely split from her ex-boyfriend Cody Orlove amid abuse allegations and also been called out for making disparaging comments about Charli D'Amelio, TikTok's most-followed creator. In November 2020, she said that she was seeking mental health treatment and took a brief hiatus online, but has since resumed posting.</p><p>Out of those surveyed, 5.8% knew LaVerne, with 55.7% responding that they had an unfavorable opinion of her and 27.9% skewing favorable.</p><h2>6. Jeffree Star</h2><div type="image" title="Jeffree Star" height="593" width="791" msid="81004855" hostid="261"></div><p>Jeffree Star is one of the oldest - and biggest - figures in the beauty YouTube community, building a beauty empire with his company Jeffree Star Cosmetics. He's also one of its most contentious. In 2020, <a href="https://www.insider.com/jeffree-star-sexual-assault-allegations-violence-accused-predator-myspace-payments-2020-9">Insider's Kat Tenbarge investigated claims of sexual assault against Star,</a> with <a href="https://www.insider.com/jeffree-star-sexual-assault-claims-hush-money-insider-investigation-2020-12">documents appearing to show</a> that a Jeffree Star Cosmetics executive had paid one of Star's accusers $45,000 in a hush-money payment. </p><p>Star's tenure as an influencer was reflected in his numbers, with 22.5% of survey respondents knowing who he was. However, his controversies also shone through: 55.7% had an unfavorable opinion of him, while 19.6% had a favorable one.</p><h2>5. Jacob Sartorius</h2><div type="image" title="jacob sartorius milan fashion week" height="4480" width="5973" msid="81004863" hostid="261"></div><p>It's a bit baffling that Jacob Sartorius, the 18-year-old star who rose to fame on Musical.ly in the latter half of the 2010s, is on this list in between Jeffree Star and Onision. Onision</h2><div type="image" title="Onision" height="748" width="998" msid="81004870" hostid="261"></div><p>Onision, a YouTuber who got his start in 2007 and whose real name is James "Greg" Jackson, was a popular creator who <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LH5ay10RTGY">went viral for his "Banana Song" in 2009.</a> However, his fall from grace, <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-youtube-supervillain-are-made-onision-amberlynn-reid-2020-4">as Insider's Lindsay Dodgson reported</a>, was one of the most intense in YouTube history. In 2019, <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2019/11/26/20984785/onision-doxxing-patreon-deplatformed-twitter-youtube">six women accused him of harassment and emotional abuse</a> and he was banned from Patreon; most recently, he was removed from YouTube's partner program, meaning that his videos will no longer be monetized. Logan Paul</h2><div type="image" title="Logan Paul" height="1500" width="2000" msid="81004878" hostid="261"></div><p>Logan Paul ascended to online fame in 2013 when he and his brother Jake Paul began posting to short-form video app Vine, later moving onto YouTube after Vine shut down. Known for wild stunt videos, he's a controversial online personality, <a href="https://www.insider.com/youtube-star-logan-paul-apologised-after-filming-a-dead-body-in-japans-suicide-forest-2018-1">due in large part to a January 2018 video that showed Paul filming what appeared to be a dead body in Japan's Aokigahara forest</a>. That video drew widespread backlash, but <a href="https://www.insider.com/logan-paul-podcast-controversies-drama-reputation-jake-2020-12">as Insider's Lindsay Dodgson reported</a>, he's managed to orchestrate a redemption arc of sorts over the past several years and is generally considered to have a better reputation than his brother, Jake, a notion also reflected in Insider's data.</p><p>Logan Paul is the most well-known influencer on this list, with 30.6% of respondents saying that they knew who he was and putting him close to other big-name internet personalities like Joe Rogan, who was known by 37.2% of those surveyed. However, 68% had an unfavorable opinion of him, with 13.5% still holding a favorable one.</p><h2>1. Jake Paul</h2><div type="image" title="Jake Paul" height="1500" width="2000" msid="81004882" hostid="261"></div><p>Controversy has propelled the younger Paul brother, Jake, to greater and greater heights of fame since he and his brother became internet famous in the 2010s. Booted from the Disney Channel show "Bizaardvark" in 2017 <a href="https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2017/07/19/538103866/youtube-star-jake-pauls-neighbors-tell-him-were-not-jake-paulers">after his West Hollywood neighbors said that he had turned the street into a "war zone." </a> He's been <a href="https://www.insider.com/jake-paul-controversies-timeline-looting-scandals-racist-slurs-drama-2020-6">accused of scamming his young followers more than once</a>, come under fire for using slurs, and posting videos some said were inappropriate for his young audience. </p><p>Most recently, he was charged with trespassing in Arizona after footage of him at a mall where looting and vandalism were occurring circulated online; he's also thrown parties at his home in Calabasas, CA during the COVID-19 pandemic and <a href="https://www.insider.com/jake-paul-gun-fbi-search-video-la-police-firearms-mansion-2020-8">law enforcement seized what seemed to be large guns from his home during an August FBI raid</a>. The YouTuber, better known as Onision, <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-youtube-supervillain-are-made-onision-amberlynn-reid-2020-4" target="_blank" rel="noopener">has come to be seen as a kind of supervillain on the platform</a> for publishing videos that many have found strange and disturbing, and he has become increasingly condemned over his 13 years as a content creator.</p><p>Jackson posted <a href="https://twitter.com/Onision/status/1351662625508057090" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a video</a> to his channel and his Twitter page on Tuesday night with a screenshot from an email he said he received from YouTube.</p><p>"Responsibility is our number one priority at YouTube and it's important for us to ensure that creators are empowered to use their influence responsibly in the YouTube community and beyond," it said. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Insider surveyed over 1,000 people three times throughout 2021 to learn more about influencers.</li><li>The data revealed the most adored, reviled, and well-known internet stars and how their popularity has changed over time.</li><li>Insider found that the more well known a creator is, the more likely people are to dislike them.</li></ul><p>The internet has changed the nature of fame and <keyword id="6355064" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="celebrity" source="Orion">celebrity</keyword>. Influencers have found rapid success and adoration in their niches of the web - many without ever being noticed by the general population - and the tides of popularity can go out as fast as they come in.</p><p>Insider surveyed 1,105 people to learn about their knowledge and opinions on 99 internet influencers over the first three quarters of 2021.</p><p>The changes and trends help reveal the new inner workings of online fame.</p><h2>How being canceled can change your career</h2><p>The data plotted in Insider's influencer index shows that the more well-known a creator is, the more likely people are to find the influencer "unfavorable."</p><p>This notion is consistent with a <a href="https://www.insider.com/cancel-culture-youtube-actually-help-a-youtubers-career-2020-12">previous finding from Insider</a>: Getting "canceled" can ultimately be incredibly beneficial for creators, often growing their overall recognition and prolonging their careers.</p><p><keyword id="12055193" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="david-dobrik" source="Orion">David Dobrik</keyword>, a Slovakian YouTuber and leader of "The Vlog Squad," gained the most recognizability throughout Insider's three surveys. The <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/carlieporterfield/2020/10/01/david-dobriks-tesla-giveaway-drove-100000-new-voter-registrations-in-one-day/">Tesla-gifter and vlogging star</a> grew a total of 5 percentage points from the beginning of the year to the third quarter of 2021, with nearly 1-in-5 survey respondents telling Insider they were familiar with him.</p><p>Matching the trend found in the influencer index, while Dobrik's recognizability grew, he also became more unpalatable to many surveyed by Insider. An <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vlog-squad-durte-dom-rape-allegation-david-dobrik-zeglaitis-video-2021-3">Insider investigation in March uncovered</a> allegations of rape against a former member of Dobrik's Vlog Squad, Dominykas Zeglaitis. One month later, Jeff Wittek, a member of the group, revealed he had <a href="https://www.insider.com/jeff-wittek-eye-injury-david-dobrik-documentary-2021-4">broken his skull</a> while performing a stunt on a crane operated by Dobrik.</p><p>The allegations against his crewmate and the filming accident seemingly precipitated a drop in Dobrik's "favorability" score of 35 percentage points while also bumping his "unfavorability" score up 11 percentage points throughout 2021.</p><p>Both Logan and <keyword id="11983009" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="jake-paul" source="Orion">Jake Paul</keyword> were also among the top five most well-known influencers from the survey. In addition to creating YouTube videos and podcasts, each of the brothers have stayed in the public spotlight by moonlighting - and by most accounts, succeeding - as professional boxers.</p><p>Both have also kept their names in the press via major scandals in their <a href="https://www.insider.com/jake-paul-logan-data-graphs-will-never-be-canceled-2020-12">storied careers</a> - Jake Paul was charged with <a href="https://www.insider.com/jake-paul-charge-looting-video-trespassing-unlawful-assembly-2020-6">criminal trespassing and unlawful assembly</a> after a riot at a mall in Scottsdale, Arizona. <a href="https://www.insider.com/logan-paul-podcast-controversies-drama-reputation-jake-2020-12">Logan Paul</a>, perhaps best known for a scandal involving his video in Japan's "suicide forest," has begun to rebuild his reputation, becoming a Pokemon card collector with the <a href="https://www.dexerto.com/pokemon/logan-paul-claims-he-owns-the-most-expensive-pokemon-card-in-the-world-1592578/">most expensive card</a> in the world.</p><p>There are, however, a few outliers in the data, such as children's TV star JoJo Siwa and podcasting giant Joe Rogan, who was the most known person named in the survey. The two creators are the only two people in Insider's survey known by more than 15% of respondents who possess a positive "net favorability" score, which shows how well-regarded an influencer is.</p><h2><strong>Some influencers are more beloved than others</strong></h2><p>Insider also learned from its polls how favorable each influencer is to a general audience. </p><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/piper-rockelle-who-is-youtuber-pink-exploited-how-old-birthday-2021-9">Piper Rockelle</a>, a 14-year-old YouTuber known for challenge videos involving friends, family, and her boyfriend, showcased by far the highest boost in "favorability" of any other influencer surveyed by Insider. She recently made headlines for a feud with the singer, Pink, due to the <a href="https://www.insider.com/piper-rockelle-who-is-youtuber-pink-exploited-how-old-birthday-2021-9#rockelle-denied-that-her-parents-had-exploited-her-after-pink-tweeted-about-photos-of-rockelle-in-a-bikini-6">racy thumbnails</a> on the underage star's videos.</p><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/piper-rockelle-youtube-pink-popularity-pictures-instagram-controversy-bikini-2021-9">Rockelle's favorability jumped</a> by 15 percentage points in 2021 - no other influencer grew their favorability more than 5 percentage points.</p><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/c/DoctorMike/featured">Doctor Mike</a>, a YouTuber and medical physician with nearly 7.8 million subscribers, consistently ranked as the most favorable creator on the platform, garnering about 60% favorability in all three quarters of 2021. The doctor uses his platform to post humorous medical-related videos that often draw from his full-time job practicing family medicine.</p><h2>Online drama can have real-life consequences</h2><p>Conversely, some influencers became less favorable to audiences throughout 2021.</p><p>Onision, a YouTuber who first became famous in the first-wave of content creators on the platform for wacky and eclectic sketches, tied with beauty guru <keyword id="12054373" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="james-charles" source="Orion">James Charles</keyword> for the highest boost in unfavorability of all influencers surveyed.</p><p>Discovery+ released a four-part documentary on <a href="https://www.insider.com/onision-grooming-accusations-explained-controversial-youtuber-exposed-2019-12">Onision</a> in early 2021 detailing his fall from grace after a former fan accused him of grooming. Unlike some creators whose unfavorability ebbed and flowed over the course of the year, Onision consistently became less favorable to American audiences. He was the most unfavorable influencer of all in Insider's survey, with 77% of respondents saying they disliked him.</p><p>Makeup expert James Charles' unfavorability rose from the winter to the summer at the same rate as Onision, but Charles' is disliked by 20% fewer people. <a href="https://www.insider.com/james-charles-grooming-accusations-denies-predator-tiktok-2021-2">Allegations of grooming</a> arose against Charles in early 2021 after several boys said Charles sexted with them when they were under the age of 18. The YouTuber said he was deceived about some of the boys' ages at the time. The influencer index: How the internet's most hated and loved stars stack up

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Creators say the copyright and community guideline claim system on <keyword id="10879" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="YouTube">YouTube</keyword> has many flaws that can be exploited.</li><li><keyword id="860150" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="YouTubers">YouTubers</keyword> are having their channels held hostage by people who don't like their content, or who want to extort them out of money.</li><li>There are two ways this happens: community guideline claims, which anyone can submit, and copyright claims, which can only be made within the YouTube site. Three strikes of either and a channel is terminated.</li><li>Mike Fleischauer, for example, whose channel Gamefromscratch covers development tutorials and news, was given a community guideline strike by a stranger who asked for $50 worth of Bitcoin to remove it.</li><li>The false claim problem is tricky for YouTube to resolve because they are not held responsible for copyrighted content uploaded by their users thanks to DMCA laws, which means anyone and everyone has the ability to easily file claims against who they please.</li></ul><p>YouTubers have anguished over copyright strikes on their channels for years. It's one of the biggest and most common frustrations amongst creators because often, when they receive a claim on one of their videos, they are completely powerless to do anything about it.</p><p>There are two kinds of claims that can be made against YouTubers: Community guideline claims, which anyone can submit, and copyright claims, which can only be made by the copyright holder or someone on their behalf. There's a policy that states a channel is terminated after three strikes — a rule that some have started weaponizing.</p><h2>YouTubers vs big corporations</h2><p>YouTubers have long known that they have to be careful not to allow any music or clips owned by big corporations into their videos or they risk losing their AdSense revenue.</p><p>One popular YouTuber, who wanted to remain anonymous, told Insider big companies sometimes abuse their power by claiming royalties off smaller channels for using tiny snippets of music.</p><p>"I had a running joke on my channel with the song 'Careless Whisper' where I'd play less than ten seconds of it," they said. "It started to get flagged by Warner Chappell so instead of inserting it into videos, I would just very poorly hum it — clearly not a cover, clearly just a little joke — those started to get flagged."</p><p>They claim they lost all the advertising revenue on a 30-minute video for less than ten seconds of humming. They said they had no other option but to edit out the humming because no single creator can go up against a company of that size.</p><p>"I reached out to YouTube about it and they said they'd look into it and I never heard anything again," they said.</p><p>"They bend over backwards to keep big advertisers and companies happy. They probably don't want to even risk taking the fall for copyright lawsuits so they let the rights holders paint with a broad brush that leads to a ton of copyright abuse."</p><p>Warner Chappell did not respond to Insider's request for comment.</p><h2>'The person wanted $50 in Bitcoin and for me to plug their Twitter account'</h2><p>Mike Fleischauer was recently locked out of his YouTube account after getting two strikes on the same day from multiple claims. Fleischauer has been running the channel <a href="https://www.youtube.com/user/gamefromscratch" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Gamefromscratch</a> that covers development tutorials and news for about five years.</p><p>One of his videos, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eZr8tOUe5Bg" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a review of a version of Adobe Animate</a>, was taken down multiple times even though it violates no terms of service — it's not pornography, a guide to hacking, or information about pirating software. It was unclear what had happened until a stranger got in contact with Fleischauer to admit it was their doing. Fleischauer knows who it was but has "no desire to give this scum more attention."</p><p>"The person wanted $50 in Bitcoin and for me to plug their Twitter account," Fleischauer told Insider. "That may have been the full extent of it."</p><p>As for why he was targeted, Fleischauer has no idea and would love to know.</p><p>"Mine is not a controversial channel," he said. "So far as I know my most controversial video still has well over a 90% like to dislike ratio, so it's not like I have legions of alienated viewers."</p><p><a href="https://boingboing.net/2020/05/27/fraudsters-are-shaking-down-yo.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">As pointed out in an article on Boing Boing</a>, this is not a "complex or daring" scam.</p><p>"You can do it by following a sheet of simple, foolproof instructions," it reads. "It's barely more complex than demanding money from a YouTuber, filing complaints if they don't pay up, and cackling as YouTube automatically takes down the YouTuber's videos or even suspends their account access."</p><h2>Little trust in the automated process</h2><p>Fleischauer's videos are now all restored, but that hasn't granted him much faith in YouTube's system. For starters, his video was flagged multiple times and then reinstated after manual review.</p><p>However, the most recent time it was flagged, an email from team YouTube stated the video was removed correctly and would stay that way. This led him to believe it can't have been manually reviewed at all. Rather, he was a victim of an automatic process that he didn't trust.</p><p>Fortunately, he had recently made a contact at YouTube who was a bit higher up.</p><p>"He escalated the support issue and it was resolved within minutes," he said. "It's insane to think my video is only online because I know someone inside YouTube, but that bluntly is the reality of the situation."</p><p>Fleischauer also believes his resolution is thanks to the video he posted about his situation, which gained traction on YouTube and Reddit.</p><p>"If I was smaller, my video would still be gone and potentially a warning strike would remain on my channel," he said.</p><p>Fleischauer's main concern with the system is that YouTube assumes the party receiving the incoming strike is in the wrong. In a nutshell, he said, every single YouTuber is guilty until proven innocent. There's nothing standing in the way of the same thing happening to him again, or to anyone else.</p><p>The YouTube reporting system is also way too easy to access, he said, and there are plenty of ways for hackers can set up bots and tools to do it automatically.</p><p>"YouTube needs to stop treating their creators as guilty," he said. "A channel in good standing for 5+ years, with never a strike or infraction and over 1,000 videos uploaded, shouldn't be immediately assumed guilty when several complaints come in about multiple different videos in a [matter of minutes]. But that's exactly the scenario today."</p><h2>'YouTube doesn't listen'</h2><p>Copyright claims can only be made within the YouTube platform, but that doesn't mean they are any less misused. A system called Content ID scans videos and flags any to creators where it sees their work being copied, so the creator then decides whether to make a claim depending on whether the video falls under <a href="https://fairuse.stanford.edu/overview/fair-use/what-is-fair-use/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">fair use</a> or not.</p><p>Onision, <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-youtube-supervillain-are-made-onision-amberlynn-reid-2020-4" target="_blank" rel="noopener">possibly the most vilified creator in YouTube's history</a>, is known to abuse this system. One of his biggest critics, Repzion, often has to appeal <a href="https://twitter.com/DDsulzbach/status/1130283281033809920" target="_blank" rel="noopener">multiple false strikes on his videos</a>.</p><p>YouTuber <a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCkZr5QyODPc1ZamHiFBqnDA/featured" target="_blank" rel="noopener">LtCobra</a> also had trouble when he made a video that was critical of another creator called JustDestiny for using photos of underage girls in his thumbnails. JustDestiny had the video taken down — called a <a href="https://www.dmca.com/faq/What-is-a-DMCA-Takedown" target="_blank" rel="noopener">DMCA takedown</a> — by falsely claiming he owned it, and by sending a fake cease and desist.</p><p>LtCobra told Insider it was only due to other larger YouTubers, <a href="https://www.dexerto.com/entertainment/pewdiepie-lashes-out-youtuber-justdestiny-using-underage-girls-thumbnails-357112" target="_blank" rel="noopener">including PewDiePie</a>, taking notice of the case that JustDestiny rescinded the claims. If it wasn't for the public outrage, he'd probably have a strike on his account today.</p><p>"YouTube provides only one alternative, give all of your private information to whoever copyright striked you, or suck it up," he said. "And when it's a channel with much more subscribers than the person who was striked, YouTube don't listen and creators get away with it."</p><p>He said he's not sure how YouTube could fix the issue, "but there's a massive lack of transparency with their creators, that's for sure."</p><h2>YouTube's hands are tied</h2><p>YouTuber <a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJuSltoYKrAUKnbYO5EMZ2A" target="_blank" rel="noopener">John Swan</a> also received a copyright strike when he was critical of another creator in a video who subsequently made claims against it as a means to silence him.</p><p>He told Insider YouTube's hands are tied when it comes to false claims because it has to balance the creator's interests and US Law.</p><p>"One of the main aspects of copyright law that allows YouTube to exist is Safe Harbor, where platforms like YouTube are not held responsible for copyrighted content uploaded by their users," he said. "If this law didn't exist, then platforms that host user content would not be able to exist."</p><p>But because of this law, YouTube cannot step in and make decisions about these copyright claims because that would mean interpreting the law and ruling in favor of one party. That can only be done in a court of law.</p><p>"YouTube cannot usurp the role of the courts, so they have to maintain impartiality," Swan said. "US Law states that DMCA Takedowns are solely to be resolved between the claimant and the creator of the content being claimed."</p><p>YouTube can reverse strikes if the person submitting the claim has entered illegitimate information like a fake name or email address, or if they do not own the content. But at the moment there is no option to report either of these things when a creator appeals the claim.</p><p>"There needs to be an option when you appeal, or an email you can contact to allow creators to report copyright abuse, since it is one of the more increasing ways that creators are being silenced by trolls or by people trying to stop criticism," said Swan. "In addition, I would love to see YouTube take a stronger stance against this type of behavior."</p><h2>'It's a constant guessing game'</h2><p><a href="https://www.theverge.com/2019/8/19/20812144/youtube-copyright-strike-lawsuit-alleged-extortion-minecraft" target="_blank" rel="noopener">YouTube sued a man called Christopher Brady</a> in 2019 after it was brought to the company's attention that he had submitted multiple false copyright claims against Minecraft gaming YouTubers Kenzo and ObbyRaidz.</p><p>"That was great to see," said Swan. "We need more of this action to ensure a deterrent against these false strikes."</p><p>Fleischauer said there are two immediate fixes that he can see. One, to assume the innocence of channels who are over a certain threshold of average like to dislike ratios and are in good standing. And two, to require users prove they are actual humans before being able to submit channel strikes.</p><p>"That this can be done anonymously is insane," he said. "My contact at Google says this is where their hands are tied, as he put it: 'Someone could throw a report through our window taped to a brick and they would have to honour it.'"</p><p>This is ultimately due to bad law, he said, but Google and YouTube could definitely improve their vetting process.</p><p>The anonymous YouTuber said they just want everything to be more open because the rules and objectives are always changing without being communicated effectively. This is especially important for the creators who don't have a higher up contact at the company they can lean on.</p><p>"I'm very grateful to YouTube for being the platform that's given me my career," they said. YouTube channels are being held hostage with false copyright claims, but the platform's hands are tied

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="1750622" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Doxxing">Doxxing</keyword> is a form of online harassment where a user targets a specific person or group, finds personal information, and publishes it.</li><li>Personal information could include someone's home address, email address, phone number, real name, place of employment, family members, or photographs.</li><li>Doxxing is done with malicious intent, usually targeting a celebrity, social-media influencer, journalist, politician, or anyone the doxxer is seeking revenge on.</li></ul><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/doxxing" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Doxxing</a> — which refers to "dropping docs" — is when an internet user targets a specific person or group, finds personal information about them, and then publishes it online.</p><p>Personal information can include, but is not limited to, phone numbers, email addresses, family members, spouses, real names, employers, or personal photos. Most of the time doxxing is a form of malicious harassment or revenge on celebrities, journalists, social-media influencers, politicians, or just about anyone the doxxer has a grudge with.</p><p>The term gained popularity on dark message board sites like <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/4chan" target="_blank" rel="noopener">4chan</a>, whose users pride themselves on being anonymous. So if someone is able to expose you, it is considered to be the ultimate disgrace. Now it is a much more common form of outing someone you don't agree with personally or politically.</p><p>For example, a journalist for The Daily Beast was doxxed <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/journalist-doxxed-after-reporting-about-sanders-staffers-tweets-2020-2" target="_blank" rel="noopener">after he published a critical article</a> about then presidential candidate Bernie Sanders. The journalist, Scott Bixby, received thousands of text messages and voicemails from Sanders supporters and internet trolls.</p><p>In another case, a controversial <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/s?q=onision" target="_blank" rel="noopener">YouTuber who goes by "Onision"</a> was barred from <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/patreon" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Patreon</a> after he posted screenshots of text messages with a woman who accused him of pressuring her into having sex with him.</p><p>In September, the musician Cardi B claimed a Trump supporter, <a href="https://www.billboard.com/index.php/articles/columns/hip-hop/9445552/cardi-trump-supporter-harassment-candace-owens#" target="_blank" rel="noopener">who was later arrested</a>, attempted to doxx her home address.</p><p>The <keyword id="3080710" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Dox">dox</keyword>xing of everyday people, however, is much more common. Say you're friends with a coworker on Facebook and you see that they have posted racist rhetoric on their page. Someone who wanted to dox them might tweet a screenshot of the person's post, tagging their employer in the hope they'll be publicly shamed and fired.</p><h2>The legality of doxxing</h2><p>Technically, doxxing is not illegal as long as the information is of public record. Doxxers use the internet to find public information about a target and compile it with the intent of "exposing" someone or just for pure retaliation. But if doxxing leads to death threats or threats of physical violence on the target's self or property, it can be illegal depending on where you live.</p><h2>How to prevent yourself from being doxxed</h2><p>First, think like a doxxer. Where would you go first? Search engines and social media are a good start, so you may want to consider <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-delete-yourself-from-the-internet" target="_blank" rel="noopener">removing elements of your online presence</a>.</p><p>Try Googling your name or scrolling through your own social-media feeds to find what sort of personal information is publicly shared. Consider making your account private, using different handles for your social-media accounts, or simply <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-delete-old-tweets-from-twitter-2018-12" target="_blank" rel="noopener">deleting posts or tweets</a> containing sensitive information.</p><p>Strengthen your account's <keyword id="6355300" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="security">security</keyword> and look through the <keyword id="6355135" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Privacy">privacy</keyword> preferences to see what information you are publicly sharing. <a href="https://www.facebook.com/help/443357099140264" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Facebook</a>, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/help/instagram/196883487377501" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Instagram</a>, <a href="https://help.twitter.com/en/safety-and-security/twitter-privacy-settings" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Twitter</a>, and <a href="https://myaccount.google.com/privacycheckup" target="_blank" rel="noopener">YouTube</a> all have privacy guides to help you determine what information you're sharing and who can see it. If you listed family members, employers, or residences on your social-media profiles, be sure to set them to "Friends Only" if you want to prevent being doxxed — or remove them entirely.</p><p>Frequently change your passwords to your accounts. If you have a domain name, consider hiding your registration information from the <a href="https://www.whois.net/default.aspx" target="_blank" rel="noopener">WHOIS database</a>. What is doxxing? Here's what you need to know, including how to protect your personal information

<p><em>Hi, this is Amanda Perelli and welcome back to Insider <keyword id="1112328" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Influencers">Influencers</keyword>, our weekly rundown on the influencer and creator economy. <a href="http://newsletter.businessinsider.com/join/influencerdashboard">Sign up for the newsletter here.</a></em></p><p>When <keyword id="819905" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Instagram">Instagram</keyword> first came out with a <keyword id="6762469" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="TikTok">TikTok</keyword> copycat feature, it got mixed reviews, with some <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/08/12/technology/personaltech/tested-facebook-reels-tiktok-clone-dud.html">calling Reels</a><a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/08/12/technology/personaltech/tested-facebook-reels-tiktok-clone-dud.html"> a "dud."</a></p><p>Creators weren't exactly going wild for the short-form video feature.</p><p>But since posting Reels regularly, many creators have said the feature has become a secret weapon to supercharge their growth and engagement. </p><p>This has become an enormous incentive for creators to continue using the feature and shows how much Instagram is prioritizing it.</p><p>My colleague Sydney Bradley spoke with creators who explained how Reels has bolstered growth on Instagram:</p><ul><li><p>Influencer Lissette Calveiro said her following increased by 3.6% and her total reach increased by 555% within a month of posting Reels. </p></li><li><p>Being active on both TikTok and Instagram has been a key strategy for creators to grow, industry insiders said.</p></li><li><p>Lifestyle influencer Chandler DeHart said the ratio of followers that a really good Reel video will generate, as opposed to a regular static post, was "three to four times the amount."</p></li></ul><p>"When I started going more viral and having my Reels get picked up, I started growing a couple hundred and I was like, 'Oh, this is cool.
