Touted as "one of the largest defense upgrades in recent years," the Google upgrade comes in the form of a new text classification system called RETVec (Resilient and Efficient Text Vectorizer). "To help make text classifiers more robust and efficient, we've developed a novel, multilingual text vectorizer called RETVec that helps models achieve state-of-the-art classification performance and drastically reduces computational cost," the company said. Systems such as Gmail, YouTube and Google Play rely on text classification models to identify harmful content including phishing attacks, inappropriate comments, and scams. These types of texts are harder for machine learning models to classify because bad actors rely on adversarial text manipulations to actively attempt to evade the classifiers. "For example, they will use homoglyphs, invisible characters, and keyword stuffing to bypass defenses," said the tech giant. Due to its novel architecture, RETVec works out-of-the-box on every language and all characters without the need for text preprocessing, making it the ideal candidate for on-device, web, and large-scale text classification deployments. "Models trained with RETVec exhibit faster inference speed due to its compact representation. Having smaller models reduces computational costs and decreases latency, which is critical for large-scale applications and on-device models," the tech giant said. RETVec is a novel open-source text vectorizer that allows people to build more resilient and efficient server-side and on-device text classifiers. Price and availability Realme 9 Speed Edition starts at a price of ₹19,999 for the 6GB RAM and 128GB storage variant. There is another high-end variant that is priced at ₹22,999 and packs in 8GB of RAM and similar storage. It is available on Flipkart and Realme’s own D2C website. Design and build quality At 199 grams, there is a certain heft to the Realme 9 Speed Edition that I felt after taking the phone out of the box for the first time. That being said the in-hand feel was quite satisfactory and holding it was not a difficult task at least for someone with relatively bigger hands. But if you are someone with small hands, then you might take some time to adjust for comfortable one-handed usage. <div type="image" title="DSC_0023_1200x900" msid="90150305" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Realme 9 Speed Edition sports a polycarbonate back. &amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> The variant with me is in a starry glow colourway which is a combination of blue and pink depending on the angle you are looking from. The matte finish gives it a premium look. The rest of the physical characteristics are what we see on classic Realme mid-rangers. There are volume rockers with satisfactory build quality, a power lock and unlock button incorporating the fingerprint sensor, which is very snappy, and a SIM card slot. The SIM card slot also has space for a microSD card (upto 1TB), alongside two SIM cards. <div type="image" title="DSC_0037_1200x900" msid="90150383" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Realme 9 Speed Edition has a bottom firing loud speaker, USB Type-C port and a 3.5mm headphone jack. &amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> There is a camera bump on the back that houses three cameras along with an LED flash. You also get a prominent feature on the Realme 9 Speed Edition which has become endangered lately, a 3.5mm audio jack. This is a welcome feature at a time when the audio jack has been disappearing from smartphones at an alarming rate. <div type="image" title="DSC_0038_1200x900" msid="90150841" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Realme 9 Speed Edition runs on Android 11. &amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> Software Experience– bloatware alert Quickly touching upon the software, the Realme 9-Speed Edition runs on Android 11 with Realme UI skin out of the box. My initial experience with the smartphone was smooth and fairly responsive. Do note, that this was a brand new unit, which is expected to feel fast and responsive, but usually, these phones tend to get slower with extensive usage. As I used the phone longer, the amount of bloatware stuck out like a sore thumb. Mixed between Google and Realme’s proprietary apps, there are some bad apples, like MX TakaTak and Josh, an image editing app Soloop, and even ShareChat. Thankfully all of the above can be uninstalled, but booting up the device and seeing them first hand was a turn-off for me. Also, I am still adjusting to ads. spamming my notifications. After getting rid of them, the actual user experience is intuitive, with plenty of options to customize including useful widgets to add intuitiveness to the experience, and the usual themes and fonts. Display – bright and smooth This is my first time using a Realme device at a stretch and the screen quality has amazed me. The Realme 9 Speed Edition features a 6.6-inch LCD display with a punch-hole notch. The display is adequately bright and produces vivid colours, which makes it a good device to watch content on. Even though it uses an LCD panel, the black levels are fairly good, having watched Zack Snyder’s Justice League on it. The maximum refresh rate on the Realme 9 Speed Edition is 144Hz. Be it browsing on the internet or playing video games, the experience is buttery smooth, as expected. Complimenting the display is a bottom-firing loudspeaker, which produces high levels of volume but underwhelms in terms of details. Also, if you use the phone in landscape mode, your palm tends to cover the speaker blocking the sound which is annoying for a mono loudspeaker. Performance Realme 9 Speed Edition is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G 5G chipset. In my four days of usage so far, the phone stands out with its smooth and fast performance. It boots up in a jiffy, with zero lags, and handles heavy games like Battlegrounds Mobile India smoothly, even at Ultra HD settings. <div type="image" title="IMG_1348_1200x900" msid="90151790" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Realme 9 Speed Edition runs BGMI on UHD settings. &amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> My review unit has 8GB RAM which is ample to hold applications in memory for longer periods of time. Rarely did the phone miss a beat and I would usually jump straight to the point where I left off in a particular app. Internal storage is 128GB which should be sufficient for most users. Battery life and management is where the Realme 9 Speed Edition should get your attention. Packing in a decent 5,000mAh cell, I had to charge the smartphone once in two days. It is worth noting that your mileage in this regard might vary based on your usage patterns. This is incredible, given that the screen refresh rate and audio profiles were maxed out. When I had to put it on charge, the 30W Dart Charge fast charging came in handy, with the Realme 9 Speed Edition going from 0 to 100% in about 50 minutes. Now, it is a 5G smartphone but I can’t test that performance just yet because of the absence of infrastructure. What I can tell you is that on 4G LTE the performance was quite satisfactory, I used it with my Vi sim and there were no call drops. Data connectivity was also stable and 4G internet speeds were decent. Yet again, it is worth noting that your mileage may vary based on network conditions in your area. <div type="image" title="DSC_0029_1200x900" msid="90150684" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Realme 9 Speed Edition has a triple rear camera set-up. &amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> Camera performance Realme 9 Speed Edition features a triple camera array, housed in the camera island on the back. The primary camera is a 48MP sensor which is snappy to click pictures but the end results are not very pleasing. The colour tones do not look natural, and the pictures have a milk tint to them. The AI retouching does help, but the execution is not perfect yet, and it’s a little obvious that the picture has been enhanced post-capture. <div type="image" title="IMG20220310111733_1200x900" msid="90150481" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Realme 9 Speed Edition features a 48MP primary camera. &amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div>Then there is a dedicated 2MP monochrome portrait lens, which at first sounds like marketing lingo, but the results are good and worthy of your Instagram feed. <div type="image" title="IMG20220310125331_1200x900" msid="90150501" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Ultra-Wide angle shot from Realme 9 Speed Edition. &amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div>The 2MP macro sensor produces rich images in perfect lighting conditions, but I won't suggest keeping your hopes high with this one either. <div type="image" title="IMG20220311113447_1200x900" msid="90150532" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Realme 9 Speed Edition portrait selfie. &amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> The front camera is a 16MP shooter which performs decently by itself. But it's with AI retouching that things get interesting. The AI beauty selfie feature lets you fiddle around with everything on your face. You can change the size of your nose, eyes, and cheeks, and of course, the classic option to change your skin tone. It’s like giving yourself an AI plastic surgery. Maybe some users will find it amusing, I am not a big fan. After that experience, it’s the video mode that surprised me. With electronic image stabilization (EIS) enabled, you can document whatever is in front of the sensor without losing the meaning. Audio is also crisp and goes well with the visual outcome. There are classic features onboard as well like dual video mode which might come in handy. Verdict The Realme 9 Speed Edition has the potential to stand out and carve its own name in the mid-range smartphone category. It seems like a safe bet for buyers looking for powerful performance without shelling premium. To be more specific, gamers and aggressive users don’t mind compromising on the camera. In its price bracket of under ₹20,000, we only have a handful of choices from Xiaomi and Samsung both of which are now repeating the same recipe with multiple devices. In that situation, Realme 9 Speed Edition can be considered a value choice liberating the buyers from the obvious. But if you need an overall package with a better camera, display and can do with decent performance, you can explore other options like the Samsung A52 5G, Redmi Note 11T or Nord CE 2 5G. Realme 9 Speed Edition review – Great performance for price but underwhelming camera

<keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> is consistently being bandied as the next major growth market for all smartphone companies, but there is one company that’s really struggling to crack India. The company in question is the most valuable one in the world -- <keyword id="6354427" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="apple">Apple</keyword>. According to CounterPoint’s latest report, Apple’s market share has dropped to an all-time low in India, with its share of the smartphone market dropping to below 2%. The problem is a combination of the nature of the Indian smartphone consumer, Indian laws and Apple’s stubbornness. This quarter Xiaomi and Samsung have emerged as the defacto leaders with their combined market share in India pushing 30%. Samsung managed to regain its lead in India with a share of 29%, up from 24% in the previous quarter, as per a report by Canalys. Xiaomi also grew to 28% market share in the country. While Tim Cook has reiterated often that India is a key market for the Cupertino-based giant, Apple has hit a new low in India, which is clearly the most important smartphone market outside of China. Pricing doesn’t allow Apple to compete for market share in India The problem for the company is that India is primarily a sub Rs 15,000 market, while the cheapest <keyword id="6354606" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="iPhone">iPhone</keyword> – the iPhone SE costs Rs 26,000, and runs three-year-old hardware. Apple doesn’t make cheap products because it doesn’t want to be perceived as a mass market smartphone brand. The Indian market is wildly different from the one in the United States, Europe and even China, which is Apple’s favourite market off-late. These markets are dominated by the operators and their contracts, where users can get the latest and greatest iPhone for about the same Rs 15,000 amount, put in as down payment. The space for phones that cost more than Rs 30,000 is just 4% of the Indian smartphone market. And that is commanded by OnePlus, followed by Samsung. Even if Apple were to get 100% market share in the premium space, it would still only command 4% of the market. Even when competing on price, older iPhones like the 6S and 7 lose out to newer phones from companies like OnePlus on both marketing and also technical capability. Indians tend to buy phones on the basis of specifications and even some of the newer models lose out to brands like OnePlus in the premium segment as the iPhone 6S and 7 models are perceived to be inferior. Hardware disadvantage Apple’s hardware disadvantage swells up when one talks about the cheapest iPhone models in this country. Apple simply doesn’t have a product in that price bracket, the sub-Rs 20,000 zone, and that’s the price point where the market for new smartphones is exploding. While the cheapest iPhone, the SE, costs Rs 26,000, it’s not the best selling iPhone here. It is the iPhone 6, which first popped up in 2014...and here we are in 2018. There are two reasons for this -- first, the iPhone 6 has a bigger screen (4.7-inch) which is more to the liking of Indian users; and second, design-wise, it’s not too dissimilar from the iPhone 8 which came out at the fag end of 2017. With the entry of Reliance Jio in India in late 2016, Indians have developed a voracious appetite for consuming video on the go. The iPhone SE, which uses the design of the iPhone 5 and 5S, has a rather small 4-inch screen. Newer phones like the Redmi Note 5 have much larger 5.99-inch screens. That’s a difference of 2-inches and considering mobile video, it's a huge one. The iPhone SE and iPhone 6, which are the two cheapest iPhones in India also have dated cameras. Nowadays, phones like the Honor 9 Lite and Redmi Note 5 Pro also offer dual cameras with an iPhone X-like bokeh mode -- something these older, cheaper iPhones can’t hope to match. Network conditions in India are often quite poor, connectivity wise, which results in smartphones consuming more battery. Apple’s iPhones have never been known for battery life. The most affordable iPhone in India (iPhone SE) has a meagre 1,624mAh battery, while phones half its price are pushing battery packs that are more than double the size. iPhones also don’t offer hardware features that are popular in emerging markets like ours. For instance, there is no support for dual SIM cards, and there is no support for expandable memory. With newer models like the iPhone 7, iPhone 8 and iPhone X, there isn’t even a headphone jack -- something competitors like Samsung and OnePlus are providing to customers in the premium segment. Apple hasn’t been able to push its design as a premium advantage either, as Chinese smartphone manufacturers have aped iPhone-like designs on almost all their phones. In fact, the design of the iPhone X has been democratised by Chinese smartphone makers. For instance, the iPhone X-style notch display can be found even on new phones like the Honor 9N that starts at just Rs 13,999 while offering dual cameras on not only the back but also for selfies, and also providing a battery that’s almost twice as big as the iPhone SE. Even their software is designed in a way that Android looks more like iOS. Android modifications from vendors like <keyword id="6357456" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="huawei">Huawei</keyword>, Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo follow the same basic iOS-like design language. Software disadvantage It’s bad enough that many Android smartphone makers have designed their software to mimic the look and feel of iOS, but Apple’s problems are compounded by the fact that its own services perform poorly in India or are non-existent. Apple Maps is perhaps the biggest no-show. It doesn’t do turn-by-turn navigation in India and its mapping coverage is abysmal in the country. It is a matter of fact that Apple Maps can’t be used in India as a reliable tool for commuting. Apple Pay isn’t available in India at a time where digital payments are taking off in the country. Paytm and Google’s Tez payments systems are taking off in India massively. Samsung launched Samsung Pay in India last year. Apple Pay is dependent on NFC, while Samsung Pay uses a combination of NFC and magnetic secure transaction (MST), which mimics the magnetic signal a credit or debit card makes to a POS machine. Siri, on most days doesn’t understand the Indian accent as well as the Google Assistant, and nor can it do much. Heck, <keyword id="10387" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Microsoft">Microsoft</keyword>’s Cortana and Amazon’s Alexa do a better job and this is despite the fact that Apple was the first company to deploy a virtual assistant. While Apple’s services hobble on its own trophy -- the iPhone -- its competitors -- Google, Amazon and Microsoft have their services performing better on iOS. For mapping, most people use Google Maps. For search, Google Search becomes the default, and for productivity, Microsoft’s Office crushes Apple’s iWork apps. Rarely, you’re using Apple software on the iPhone in India. Even Apple Music, which is one of the rare examples of an Apple service doing well in the country, has been flanked by local competition like Ganna.com, Jio music, Wynk and Saavn. All of whom have a free tier. On older iPhones, Apple’s iOS updates have also crippled the experience of the iPhone. A couple of years ago, there used to be a strong argument in favour of the iPhone as it would perform well for over two years. Apple’s recent updates have made older iPhones inferior in comparison to newer Android phones that cost the same. Apple is addressing this issue in this year's iOS 12 update, which makes huge performance improvements to older iPhones, but it could be too little too late. The app store also doesn't make life easy for users as it demands a credit card for a user to even download free apps. That's not the case on the Google Play store. Apple has been late in localising services for India The larger issue here is that Apple isn’t localising its services for India in the way it has attempted to for China. This is indicative of the fact that Apple hasn’t taken the time or put enough resources behind localising its services for this country. Samsung and Huawei have R&amp;D centres in India customising services for the market. Xiaomi also prioritises and customises products for India. Apple opened an App Accelerator in Bangalore and a facility for Apple Maps in Hyderabad only in 2016. Google has had software and services being developed out of India since the mid-2000s, while Microsoft has been in India since the early 90’s. This has, in turn, inhibited Apple’s ability to quickly pivot. Its biggest competitor, Google, on a platform level, makes products for India. Google CEO Sundar Pichai said last year, “India shapes how we build products. If something works in India it will work globally.” And this philosophy can be seen in the customisations that Google has made to core services like Android, Maps, YouTube, Search and even payments. Its next billion division has made “Go” editions of Android, YouTube, Search and Maps, which are designed to work better on low power phones and poorer network conditions. They have even invested in KaiOS that powers feature phones like the Jio Phone creating its own versions of YouTube, Google Search and Assistant in India. For Apple to replicate its China success in India, it has to do a lot more than what it did in China. Even in China, Apple’s momentum has slowed so it has a steep slope to climb there as well. In China, Google and Amazon are almost non-existent. In India, they are big players. Apple isn’t able to compete with Google with regards to services. Most people use Google services which are part of all Android phones and one doesn’t need to buy a comparatively expensive iPhone to enjoy them. Apple and the Indian government: Frenemies? Apple hasn’t seen eye to eye with the Indian government for long. Apple expected concessions for manufacturing in India. It never made headway with that. While it lobbied for tax concessions -- brands like Xiaomi, Oppo and Huawei all got on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Make in India’ programme which grants locally assembled phones some tax concessions. Only recently, Apple has started manufacturing both the iPhone SE and iPhone 6S in India. There are some reports that Apple has locked in a deal with one of its ODM vendors to manufacture even the iPhone X, but that’s not happening right now. The price variance between the iPhone X and the new Samsung Galaxy S9+ is quite startling. The iPhone X tops out at a whopping Rs 1,07,999 while the latest Galaxy S9+ tops out at Rs 69,000 for its top-end model in India. That’s almost a gap of Rs 40,000 which ironically is the cost of the 128GB model of the OnePlus 6 which is currently the best selling smartphone in the premium segment in this country. In the US, the iPhone X costs $1,149 which is around Rs 79,000 and the Galaxy S9+ costs $792 (around Rs 55,000). This points towards the fact that India is the most expensive place to purchase an iPhone and also the fact that Samsung’s phones have a huge price advantage in India that they don’t enjoy even in the US. And a lot of this is due to the fact that the S9+ is assembled in Samsung’s factory in Greater Noida (a satellite town outside New Delhi) which also happens to be the largest smartphone manufacturing plant in the world. The iPhone is further hobbled by the fact that it has an international warranty and India has a bubbling <keyword id="395545" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="grey-market">grey market</keyword>. It’s totally possible for someone to buy an imported iPhone for much lesser than the official price in India and still enjoy global warranty on the product. For years, Apple has been hoping to get permissions to set up its iconic Apple Stores in India. Indian law stipulates that single brand retail can only happen when products use 30% raw materials that are locally sourced -- that’s a hard problem to solve for Apple. That’s led to it selling its phones via resellers who often have discounted products to move inventory, thereby diluting Apple’s premium identity. In order to move more affordable iPhones, the Indian government has also rejected Apple’s plan for selling refurbished iPhones in India. More recently, Apple has been deadlocked in a stalemate with Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) in India over the installation of its spam reporting app on the iPhone. The telecom regulator has been reported to be taking extreme steps which could result in the iPhone being blocked from telecom networks in India if Apple doesn’t play ball, but that seems to be changing. An update in iOS 12 could possibly pave the way for an extension in the iMessage app for the TRAI to push out its spam reporting feature. The big takeaway is that Apple’s brand positioning makes its life hard enough in a market where feature phone sales are still growing, however, it hasn’t helped its own cause by not investing in India in a timely manner and also not adopting and partaking quickly enough in initiatives of the Indian government which has put it at a disadvantage with regards to lobbying.

But, it gets the core features so right that those extra flourishes seem irrelevant. </li><li>The Pixel 4a should be at the very top of the list for anyone looking to spend under $400 or even under $500 on a smartphone.</li></ul>Wow, what a little gem.Ever since I started using the Pixel 4a a couple weeks ago, I've enjoyed two new realizations:1. Midrange <keyword id="6354775" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Smartphones">smartphones</keyword> these days are amazing, and they're only getting better2. I don't think I can spend anywhere near $1,000 on a smartphone in good conscience anymore.You may notice that I don't make comparisons with the recently announced and super-hyped OnePlus Nord — a highly rated midranger that would typically be an obvious choice for comparison with the Pixel 4a. That's because we currently focus on devices available in the US, and the OnePlus Nord is currently only available in India and the EU.Check out the Pixel 4a and what's it's like to use.<h2><keyword id="6355629" type="DEFINITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="google">Google</keyword> Pixel 4a specs</h2><ul><li>Display: 5.81-inch 1080p (2,340 x 1,080) 60Hz OLED</li><li>Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G</li><li>Memory and storage: 6GB RAM &amp; 128GB </li><li>Rear camera: 12.2-megapixel single lens</li><li>Selfie camera: 8-megapixel</li><li>Battery: 3,140mAh, 18W fast charger included</li></ul><div type="image" title="pixel 4a back" height="1131" width="1508" msid="77335021" hostid="261"></div><h2>Design and display</h2>The Pixel 4a is a handsome little device with narrow screen bezels, a premium-feeling solid plastic back with a frosted matte texture, and Google's signature colored power button (mint green on the 4a) that tastefully accents the totally stealth-black phone. I should note that the frosted matte coating on the Pixel 4a's back can scuff quite easily, but that shouldn't be an issue when used with a case. It's pretty amazing to see an OLED display on a $350 midranger — a feature that has previously only existed on phones that cost over $400. The 1080p resolution is totally expected at this price and range, and nothing to scoff at — I'd still be happy with 1080p resolution on a premium flagship phone, quite frankly.Thankfully, there's no notch, but there is a Samsung-style hole-punch selfie camera that's un-intrusive and doesn't raise eyebrows.You get a 60Hz screen here compared to the super-smooth 90Hz and 120Hz screens you find on high-end and expensive flagships. That's nothing to cry about — 60Hz is still plenty smooth for a $350 phone. (Most midrange smartphones have flat screens rather than the curved screens on some high-end flagships, so it shouldn't be a surprise that the Pixel 4a's screen is flat. Still, it's worth a positive mention to encourage and reinforce the fact that curved screens aren't good.)<h2>Performance and battery life</h2>Google could have messed up very easily by cheaping out on the performance. Thankfully, it didn't. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G running things in the Pixel 4a delivers impressive performance, especially when you consider it's $350. I used the Pixel 4a just as I use an expensive high-end smartphone, and I while I notice the rarest and most minuscule stutters here and there, I never feel frustrated by the phone's performance. Apps open and run quickly and smoothly, and navigating around the Android operating system feels smooth and natural. I made the Pixel 4a work and feel even faster with a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/samsung-galaxy-s20-make-faster-with-easy-developer-options-trick-2020-3" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">little trick I use</a> on pretty much every Android phone. The "G" you see after the Snapdragon 730 model nomenclature indicates that the chip has slightly boosted performance for gaming. Indeed, the Pixel 4a runs power-hungry games like "Asphalt 9" and "Fortnite" smoothly enough, albeit with slightly reduced graphics settings compared to the experience you get with high-end flagships.The battery size and performance is about average and what you'd expect from a vast majority of phones. On a day of light usage, including some video streaming and some straightforward web browsing and app usage, I ended the day with 45% battery life remaining before plugging it in for bed. On a day of heavy usage, including two long video calls, downloading two large games (and playing about five minutes of each), and general app usage like Slack, Reddit, Google News, I ended the day with 25%.As for charging — if you compare the Pixel 4a's included 18W charger with the iPhone SE's 5W charging brick, then yes, it's special. Otherwise, it's about standard for midrange Android phones. <div type="image" title="pixel 4a camera" height="1179" width="1571" msid="77335023" hostid="261"></div><h2>Cameras</h2>There is no distinguishable difference between the $350 Pixel 4a's and the Pixel 4's camera, a phone that starts at $800. That's incredible, and if you like your photos to look good, it's a major reason why the Pixel 4a should be at the very, very top of your list. Apart from last year's Pixel 3a and Apple's iPhone SE 2020, other midrangers around its $350 price tag simply don't come close to the Pixel 4a's camera quality. There's no zoomed or ultra-wide lens, which may be a little of a shame, but shouldn't be totally expected on a $350 phone. You do get Google's software-based Super Res Zoom feature to enhance zoomed photos, which works fairly well. Otherwise, you get the usual array of photo modes, including portrait mode, Live HDR+ so you can see exactly what a photo will look like before hitting the shutter button, and even Night Sight. Otherwise, the Pixel 4a dealt with the dark treeline and the bright clouds in the scene as well as the Pixel 4XL, and they're equally sharp and detailed. Features like Call Screen defer calls from unknown numbers to Google Assistant, which politely asks the called who they are and why they're calling. It helps with the often-daily bombardment of spam calls. Again, using the Pixel 4a didn't feel much different from using the Pixel 4 XL on a day-to-day basis. The Pixel 4a uses a good-old fashioned capacitive fingerprint sensor on the back for unlocking the phone that's faster, more accurate, and more reliable than in-display fingerprint sensors and advanced facial recognition that some phone makers are adding to their premium flagships. You also get a headphone jack, if you're still interested in the option for wired headphones without a dongle. <h2>Drawbacks</h2>There are only two drawbacks I can think of about the Pixel 4a. It doesn't come with water resistance, and it doesn't have wireless charging. But, again, this phone is three hundred and fifty dollars. I suppose I could point out that the Pixel 4a doesn't have 5G connectivity. But, right now, who cares? 5G isn't mainstream yet, and no one really knows when it will even become ubiquitous. Plus, 5G hardware costs more, and the Pixel 4a would surely have a significantly higher price had it come with 5G connectivity.I also suppose you could ask why the Pixel 4a doesn't have the same chip that high-end flagships have — the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865. It's a legitimate question when you think about the $400 iPhone SE, which runs on the same A13 chip that turns the wheels inside the iPhone 11 series. Well, maybe Apple's got Google on this one. But chip names and model numbers and so on don't matter. All that matters is that it runs well, and the Pixel 4a feels and runs fast and smoothly, and I have no complaints about its performance for both the short and long terms. And, I guess one might wonder why a $250 phone like the Moto G Power comes with a triple-lens camera system that includes an ultra-wide lens and a macro lens while the Pixel 4a comes with a single-lens camera. Truth is, the Moto G Power's cameras don't come close to the Pixel 4a's camera. I'd rather have all the resources go to a single-lens camera that takes incredible photos rather than spread over a triple-lens camera that takes comparatively crummy photos. <div type="image" title="pixel 4a in hand" height="1321" width="1762" msid="77335044" hostid="261"></div><h2>Should you buy the Google Pixel 4a?</h2>The Pixel 4a should be at the very top of the list for anyone looking to spend under $500 on a smartphone. It offers one of the best core experiences for a smartphone, and it's the best value phones there is right now, hands down. In fact, unless you're specifically after more premium features like multiple camera lenses (zoom and ultra-wide), water resistance, wireless charging, a larger screen, 5G, and/or a faster processor, the Pixel 4a should also be at the very top of your list. The core experience is so strong and price so good that you may be grasping at straws to find an excuse to get a premium smartphone. And even then, even if you want those premium things, you really have to wonder if they're worth the extra few hundred you'd pay for a premium smartphone. The Pixel 4a truly makes you wonder what more you're really getting when you spend twice as much or more.
