The device is similar to a big Hollywood-style motion capture system but without the need for heavy equipment and operators. Kodak, a fairly new brand in this smart TV category, seems to have gotten it right. The TV has a QLED Panel, a decent processor, and Google TV OS. Yes, it is minimalistic, but if you have a swanky living room, it might look out of place. I wish brands could take the aesthetics of a TV more seriously and try to adapt small changes, like a silver trim on the chin. The Matrix QLED redeems itself when we move to the build quality. The TV feels robust and heavy, reassuring of its build quality. This is important since TVs sit in their spots for long periods, generally forever. So, having a strong build quality becomes paramount. The installation process of the TV is also fairly straightforward. You can either install it on the wall with the bundled mount. Or, you can set it up on a table with the provided metallic legs. Kodak provides the necessary ports on the TV to connect multiple devices. Three HDMI ports and two USB ports on the TV combined with an AUX port. Port placement is also favorable for cable management and reach. The in-built microphone on the remote is also uber-responsive, not missing my voice command even once. The remote control has an IR blaster unit and shortcut keys for applications. It is responsive, and the in-built microphone works really well, rarely missing out on speech recognition. And it is gorgeous to look at, making you forget about the subdued styling and aesthetics. And surprisingly, all the variants come with 4K/UHD resolution support. So the native applications on the Google TV OS and third-party OTT apps fully utilize these specs. Throughout the weekend, I caught up with the House of the Dragon on Disney+ Hotstar. A perfect show to test the prowess of this TV. From the first frame itself, the images rendered are breathtaking when the HDR kicks in. The video output is crisp, with top-notch color accuracy and details. To the point that I could count the feathers on Rhenyra’s dragon. Since it is a 10-bit panel, it produces 1.1 billion colors and has a peak brightness of 550 nits. And as one would expect, it gets really bright. Rounding back to my experience of watching House of the Dragons, certain frames can be too dark to retain vision. The color banding was also minimal, only noticeable in long intervals or when a frame suddenly shifted from a dark setup to a bright one. Light bleeding was also minimal on the TV. The TV also supports Dolby Vision and HDR10+. As I mentioned, compatible applications like Netflix and Prime also take full advantage of this. There are some interesting presets for display settings on the TV for different types of content. There is a movie mode, sports mode, energy-saving mode, and vivid picture mode. I found the movie mode to work the best across all content genres. It maintains the right balance of contrast and color tones. I switched to user mode, where I had created a dedicated preset for playing games on my console. Beyond these presets, there are some advanced settings as well. You can control dynamic backlighting, which means you can control the dimming on the TV. You also get Luma control and DI film mode as well. DI film mode is interesting since it allows the TV to recognize the movies done in 24fps and refrains from applying motion smoothing. It lets you watch the film as intended by the filmmaker. Unfortunately, we don’t see any dedicated game mode or a high refresh rate here. A higher refresh rate would have added a kick to my console gaming. It features a 40W stereo speaker setup supporting Dolby Atmos and DTS TruSurround sound. I have used the TV extensively with the default audio settings, and the experience is pleasing. The audio output is loud but lacks a subwoofer so the thump in the bass is flat. Especially for a smart tv without a dedicated subwoofer. The downward-facing speakers deliver crisp details and a sound that could fill my drawing room. The experience gets immersive with TruSurround sound mode. It opens the sound stage for better details, and movies supporting the DTS format get even better. For a drawing room of 20ft x 10ft in my case I did not find the need to use a soundbar. But, if you have a bigger room then you should definitely consider a dedicated speaker set-up. Kodak has stuck the right chord here. Turning on the TV, we get to see the Google TV animation, and things go only upward from here. As expected, the UI is clean and shows no signs of bloatware or a third-party skin. To the point and easy to understand, the elders in my family could also find their way around the TV. This is an important factor since that age group generally uses a TV. Google TV OS also means unprecedented access to the Google Play store. Optimized and loaded with TV-specific applications, it delivers a complete experience to the user. You can download games, music streaming apps like Spotify, Youtube music, and, of course popular OTT apps. Google TV brings in favorite Google features as well. Like Google Chromecast, and voice assistant, both of which work pretty well here. All this aside, unfortunately, it retains the same minor annoying issues we are used to on Google TV OS. Most prominently, we can’t change the picture settings while we are watching something in an application. I hope we see this feature soon enough. Coming out to make the switch in picture settings just breaks the flow altogether. Another problem that is not on Kodak’s end is the fact that you can’t continue watching content on Netflix and Prime Video. This is when you have the same account logged in with your mobile device and TV. So you can consider this a heads-up. While the UI is mostly stable and clean, I am a bit disappointed with the bootup speed of the TV. After turning it on, it takes about a minute and a half to set up. It doesn’t sound too much, but after a while, it gets annoying. The lag remains when switching between applications as well, with the TV taking its sweet time to land on an application. I feel the 2GB RAM on the TV is not enough to handle the software it carries. Storage space, however, is fine at 16GB. Enough to download applications and then some files if you wish to. Verdict Kodak Matric QLED TV is an ideal range of smart TVs under a tight budget. Starting at ₹33,999 for the 50-inch variant, they are easy to recommend considering the features they offer. Yes, the audio setup is a bit underwhelming but the TV makes up for it with a solid display prowess, a stable Google TV OS and healthy connectivity options.

The brand's entry into the tablet space after a long hiatus indicates how lucrative this segment has eventually become. Xiaomi Pad 5, on paper, is a beast of a tablet for its price with high-end specs and a competitive price tag. But is it really? I have spent 10 days with it and I have an answer to that. Price &amp; Availability Xiaomi Pad 5 starts at ₹26,999 for the 6GB RAM &amp; 128GB storage capacity variant. There is another variant with 256GB storage capacity and similar RAM available at ₹28,999. You can buy it from Amazon or Mi’s store. Design - Feels Premium When I held the Xiaomi Pad 5 for the first time, I was really impressed with the premium feel. A design significantly inspired by Apple’s iPad Air, this latest tablet also sports a sleek frame. The materials used are different though. Xiaomi Pad 5 comes with a metal frame that encompasses a glass front and a plastic back. The tablet feels solid, and the weight distribution is favorable. At 500 grams, the Xiaomi Pad 5 is comfortable to hold, the flat edges allow you to maintain a firm grip around it, even with one hand. <div type="image" title="Xiaomi Pad 5 sports a metal frame" msid="91647827" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Xiaomi Pad 5 sports a metal frame&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> The color variant with me is the cosmic black, it’s subtle and looks chic. There are other options like Pearl white and Green, but I find this one to go well with the design. Turning the Xiaomi Pad 5 around introduces us to the camera bump, yes it is protruding, but it won’t bother you that much. Especially once you put a case on it. Other design characteristics include volume rockers which are on the top left if you are holding the tablet in landscape mode and on the right-hand side in portrait mode. There is a power lock and unlock button that is on the left side when you hold it in landscape mode and on the top right when you hold it in portrait mode. <div type="image" title="The Pad 5 is sleek" msid="91647836" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;The Pad 5 is sleek&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> The buttons are tactile and feel robust. On the bottom, you will find the USB Type-C charging port next to the speaker grill. The lack of a fingerprint sensor definitely surprised me on the Xiaomi Pad 5. Since it has a respectable size just like the iPad. What does that mean for security? I talk about it in the latter half of the article. Another drawback is the lack of IP rating, which is disappointing. A major use case for a tablet is for people who like to travel and water resistance and durability becomes paramount in such use cases. Display Xiaomi Pad 5 features an 11-inch 2.5K Display. It’s an IPS LCD panel with 1600x2560 pixels resolution. Before I get to the display quality, it’s important to highlight the chunky bezels we see around the panel. These bezels are thick and shiny and it might take some time for you to adjust to them. It’s vibrant, well lit, and produces natural colors while retaining details. I do wish that the black levels were a bit better especially around the corners, but this is expected with an LCD. Like most other LCD panels, apps like Youtube let us set up a video to 4K, which is not true. That being said it’s fun to consume content on the Xiaomi Pad 5 with respect to the screen. Dolby Atmos support also adds a zing to watching movies from different OTT apps. I watched Batman V Superman (2016) and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The display also supports a max refresh rate of 120Hz. It is as fluid as one expects it to be, and the screen becomes a breeze to work around with. Xiaomi does not provide an adaptive refresh rate feature on the Xiaomi Pad 5, this to me is a missed opportunity. I might be knit-picking here but I feel it could have worked wonders on a tablet of this capacity. Yes, 120Hz is great, but an adaptive refresh rate means the screen could switch refresh rates according to the content on display. <div type="image" title="The bezels around the display are chunky" msid="91647854" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;The bezels around the display are chunky&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> Unfortunately, Xiaomi fails to provide an efficient set-up on this tablet to compliment the screen. The quad speaker setup might sound hefty on paper but it is a disappointment in day to day usage. The main issue is the level of loudness as the volume gets damped in some situations - like when there’s a full-speed fan running in the same room. When I was watching something by myself I was mostly dependent on my TWS buds, and when it came to watching with others I connected a Bluetooth speaker. Stylus and Keyboard cover It is with the display that we also get introduced to the first accessory, Xiaomi Smart Pen. It’s sleek, and you can maintain a firm grip on it. There are buttons mounted on it, which have dedicated shortcuts on them. But does it do its job well? Yes, it does. As expected it makes your life easier when it comes to interacting with the display. I mostly used it to make notes, change volume levels, and do a bit of photo editing. In each of these use cases, the stylus never gave up on me. <div type="image" title="Xiaomi Smart Pen" msid="91647891" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Xiaomi Smart Pen under performs in graphic heavy tasks&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> That being said if you are a professional designer and create visual graphics, then the performance might lag behind the likes of Apple Pencil or S-Pen. Graphic intensive tasks usually require long-term interactions with the display, in this case, the pen starts to struggle. Like missing out on long strokes. The battery life of the stylus is favorable and at 100% capacity, it can last upto 3 days. Fortunately, it can be connected magnetically to the pad itself which also charges it. So, chances are most of the time the stylus will be sufficiently charged. Overall, if you chose to go for Pad 5 then, I would suggest spending another ₹4,999 for the stylus as well. Now that the stylus has been covered it's important to talk about the keyboard cover as well. Made of Good quality leather, the case, just like the device, also feels premium. It snaps right up on the Xiaomi Pad 5 and is easy to take off as well. However, I was struggling a bit when connecting the keyboard section. The magnetic strength hinders the smooth transition we get to see on a device like Samsung Galaxy Tab S8. I had to take out the tablet and attach it dedicatedly with precision quite often in order to use it properly. This gets tiring after a while. I hope Xiaomi fixes this design in the next iteration of the case. The real-time experience of using the keyboard is satisfactory. The keys are tactile and it’s fun typing on them. The keyboard despite being small has a respectable travel distance of 1.2mm. For that matter, this review is written on the Xiaomi Pad 5. Yes, you can’t switch between windows and tabs from the keyboard itself, but then Xiaomi isn’t pitching it like one. This is not meant to replace your laptop, instead, it provides you easy access to general online computing. And, it does manage to succeed in this endeavour. In case you want to occasionally use it like a laptop you can connect a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard with it. This is a more affordable alternative for casual users. User Experience Xiaomi Pad 5 runs on Android 11 out of the box and pairs up with the Mi UI 12.5 skin. This particular Xiaomi skin has been updated and customized for tablet orientation. For starters, you won’t find an app drawer by default on the device, instead, the apps remain on the home screen. I could set reminders, and even reply to emails from the home screen itself, this was very handy. Of course, there is a split-screen function on board as well. Xiaomi is usually good at executing this, so no wonder it works smoothly on the Xiaomi Pad 5. You can open up to two windows simultaneously which is what a general user would incline towards. But with ample real estate, I feel one could use 3 apps as well. Maybe Xiaomi should consider it with a future update. Just like the iPad, we get to see an app tray on the bottom of the screen as well, which pops up when we swipe upwards from the bottom half. There were times when I was trying to navigate back to the home screen but instead the app tray would pop out. If you want to solve this issue altogether, turn off gestures and use navigation buttons instead. As mentioned previously in this review, Xiaomi Pad 5 does not come with a fingerprint reader, instead, it has a face unlock. Unlike the more fancy IR blasters that we see on other devices, this one works with the front camera. And as it is with generic face unlocking, the problems are similar here. In low lighting conditions or while wearing a mask, the Xiaomi Pad 5 struggles to unlock. For the most part, I had to punch in my numeric pin to get inside. Xiaomi Pad 5 Performance Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 processor turns out to be the right chipset for this device. Delivering a fiery performance the SoC works in sync with the OS on board. The Xiaomi Pad 5 boots up without any lag, and you can begin to interact with the device right off the bat. The 6GB RAM onboard is more than sufficient for genric tasks like web browsing or social media. Additionally, it holds up well against heavy tasks too. To test the gaming performance, I played BGMI on the Xiaomi Pad 5 and the performance was satisfactory. There were no frame drops and the game ran smoothly on UHD settings. Yes, the tablet did a bit warm but not unbearably hot. I edited pictures on Adobe Lightroom, and the performance was commendable there as well. The 128GB internal storage variant might be sufficient for most users, however, I would suggest going for the 256GB variant. Since a tablet is used for long and it is your local device for storing media and important documents. In this case, it’s even more important since you do not get a microSD card slot to expand the storage capacity. Something I believe should have been there. But it’s not just the microSD card slot that’s missing. There is also no SIM-card slot on board. It’s a general fact that people don’t make phone calls from their tablets. While it’s true having a SIM card has more than just one application. Primarily a SIM card gives you access to the cellular internet on the go. Xiaomi has managed to clip the wings on the Pad 5 with this move in my opinion. A powerful device of this nature is shackled by the sheer absence of the internet when on the move. I can still connect it with my mobile hotspot or ask for WiFi passwords when I move around. This is a major flaw in my opinion. Xiaomi Pad 5 comes with an 8720 mAh battery. A respectable size for the tablet, it was difficult to kill it. On light days, the Xiaomi Pad 5 would give a mileage of upto 2 days. Of course, the battery dipped to a day if I binge-watched 3 feature films in a single sitting. Do note that the battery performance depends majorly on your usage patterns. Xiaomi Pad 5 supports 22.5W fast charging which takes about 2 hours to charge it completely. Camera Performance The camera on a tablet has 2 important use cases, video calls, and scanning documents. The Xiaomi Pad 5 is an overachiever in these 2 fields. The main camera is a 13MP shooter, which clicks decent images. Xiaomi is well aware of the first use case I mentioned - scanning documents that’s why we also see a document mode in the camera app. A small add-on with a big real-time impact. I did not have to download third-party apps to scan documents on this one since I could do it from the native camera app. Otherwise, the pictures were soft and undersaturated in most cases. <div type="image" title="Pad 5 has a dedicated document mode" msid="91648068" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Pad 5 has a dedicated document mode&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> The main camera can also record 4K videos at 30fps, however, the results are underwhelming, and I doubt users will ever turn to that. The lens module on the back gives an impression that there is a multi-camera set-up, however, the other lens just reads 13MP. That’s a sign of a re-used camera module from some other Xiaomi device. This is a bit miss leading so be careful. The front camera is an 8MP shooter and is good for video calls. Taking selfies for your social media feed should remain your smartphone's job. No. Can it keep you away from your phone? Yes. Continuing the same trend, the company has launched the Realme 8i and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/mobile/news/realme-8s-5g-smartphone-hands-on-overview-price-design-and-everything-you-need-to-know/slidelist/86063930.cms">Realme 8s 5G</a> smartphones in India recently. The 8i is the most affordable device from the Realme 8-series. The Realme 8i is the successor to the Realme 7i that launched last September. In comparison to its predecessor, the new 8i has come with some upgrades while doing away with one camera sensor. It competes with the Redmi 10 Prime, which was also launched recently in the country. Unsurprisingly, the Realme 8i packs respectable hardware for its price, and combined with features like 5000mAh battery and 120Hz refresh rate, it might just fit the bill for budget gamers. Let’s find out if it does, or not. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Pricing" comment="subhead" text="Pricing">Pricing</cmsannotation> The <keyword id="11278754" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="realme-8i-review" source="Orion">Realme 8i review</keyword> unit I am using is the 6GB+128GB variant in Space Purple colour, which will cost you ₹15,999. The base model of 4GB+64GB carries a price tag of ₹13,999. The other colour variant is Space Black. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Design" comment="subhead" text="Design">Design</cmsannotation> The phone has a polycarbonate back with a glossy finish and a single-tone flowing design that is glossy and reflective. Its camera bump is placed at the top left of the back and it houses a triple camera set-up with an LED flashlight. Due to its glossy finish, the back is prone to catching fingerprints and smudges, so it’s advised to use a cover with the phone if you wish to keep it tidy for long. The phone comes with a transparent silicon case and which should come in handy to keep it safe without compromising on the looks. However, these covers tend to get yellowish after a few months of usage, so that might be a recurring expense. On the front, there is a 6.6-inch display that houses the punch hole type selfie camera. The phone has relatively thin bezels on three sides except the chin. The power button is at a comfortable position on the right side of the phone and it also features the side-mounted fingerprint scanner, which I found to be quite fast from the first touch. The phone weighs 194g and is 8.5mm thick and is comfortable to hold. Still, nothing changes in the camera bump except the loss of the ultra-wide sensor which did not see great reviews in its previous iteration. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Display" comment="subhead" text="Display">Display</cmsannotation> Interestingly, the 6.6-inch FHD+ display on the Realme 8i comes with a 120Hz refresh rate, and can also be set to standard 60Hz to save battery. But I found the Auto-select option to be the best as it offers optimum performance and varies refresh rate according to the requirement of the app. Its predecessor, Realme 7i’s display had up to 90Hz refresh rate and supported 720p resolution. <div type="image" title="Realme 8i" msid="86100137" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;The 120Hz refresh rate offers a smooth experience.&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> The Realme 8i display supports 2412x1080p resolution and has a screen to body ratio of 90.8%. It has a touch sampling rate of 180Hz, which feels exceptional given its low price. It offers a peak brightness of 600 nits. Even though most of my usage has been indoors, I didn’t find any problems while browsing the phone outdoors with auto brightness turned on. With Realme’s UI, the display feels buttery smooth, and both the media viewing and gaming experience have been impressive. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Performance" comment="subhead" text="Performance">Performance</cmsannotation> Realme is using the MediaTek Helio G96 chipset that supports the 120Hz refresh rate and gives power-efficient performance. In terms of everyday performance, I found the chipset to do a good job handling most tasks, be it the opening time of apps, gaming or streaming videos on OTT platforms. This is subject to change as the device gets older. The phone we tested was freshly out of the box and we’ll update the review if we find any inconsistency in the performance. <div type="image" title="Realme 8i Back" msid="86099734" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;The Realme 8i is powered by MediaTek Helio G96 processor that offers a versatile performance for its price.&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div>The MediaTek Helio G96 is an octa-core processor that only supports 4G LTE SIM cards and not 5G, unlike its counterparts Realme 8 5G and Realme 8s 5G. This is one of the trade-offs that you need to make to save money. In my opinion. It shouldn’t be a concern unless you’re keen to use the phone till 5G rolls out in India. With 6GB and 128GB storage, the phone performs quite consistently across applications. I didn’t notice any lag while loading apps or switching between them. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Gaming" comment="subhead" text="Gaming">Gaming</cmsannotation> Quite surprisingly, Realme offers good gaming performance. I tried graphically demanding games like Call of Duty: Mobile, Real Racing 3 and Asphalt 9 and was quite impressed by the experience. There was no lag, and the screen was very responsive to touches while gaming. <div type="image" title="Gaming" msid="86099752" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;The gaming experience with the 120Hz display.&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div>There was noticeable heating after about 30 minutes of gaming, but it wasn’t abnormal or unbearable. Gaming affected the battery life more than any other application, but that’s common on all devices. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Battery" comment="subhead" text="Battery">Battery</cmsannotation> The massive 5,000mAh was a revelation as it packs hours of screen time. I got about 10 hours of screen time with mixed usage that included browsing on Google Chrome, streaming on Amazon Prime and YouTube, and light gaming. It should take you through the day on a single charge with basic usage. Even though I am yet to test it, the phone features a Super Power-Saver mode that claims to provide hours of usage even after dropping down to 5% battery. <div type="image" title="Battery Performance" msid="86100013" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;We got about 10 hours of battery life after the first full charge.&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div>The charging disappointed me, a 30W fast-charger would be a suitable fit for this massive battery, but Realme ships an 18W charger that takes almost two hours to charge from under 10% to 100%. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Camera" comment="subhead" text="Camera">Camera</cmsannotation> The Realme 8i has done away with the ultra-wide sensor that was present in its predecessor, the 7i. It features a triple-camera set-up with a 50MP AI primary sensor. The other two lenses are — the 2MP macro lens and the 2MP B/W lens. The spots on the face are blurred to make it look cleaner. The camera app is responsive and it lets you choose between five shooting modes - night, video, photo, portrait and 50M - simply by swiping left or right. For other modes, you will have to select more options to find camera modes like slow-mo, timelapse, dual-view and film for videos and ultra-macro, panorama and Pro mode for images. <div type="image" title="Night Mode Image" msid="86099998" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;This image was captured in night mode.&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div>It can also record videos in 1080p and 720p resolutions. In film mode, you can adjust the auto-focus and ISO manually. The videos that I captured using the video mode at 1080p reproduced the original colours in daylight but at night the output came out noisy. Overall, it’s a decent camera for its price segment. It doesn't click amazing pictures, but under natural lighting, it delivers usable results. So, it’s safe to say it’s not a camera centric device, but it justifies the price. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Software" comment="subhead" text="Software">Software</cmsannotation> It features Realme UI 2.0 running on Android 11 out of the box. The UI is clean with plenty of customizable options, such as the shape of the icons, in-built wallpapers, dark mode, and eye comfort mode for reading. The phone comes with pre-installed apps that include Amazon, Daily Hunt, Josh, Moj, Snapchat and others. There are a lot of bloatware apps, but most of them can be uninstalled except for some of Realme’s own apps like the Calculator, Compass, Clone Phone, HeyTap Cloud and others. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Verdict" comment="subhead" text="Verdict">Verdict</cmsannotation> If you want an affordable smartphone with a high refresh rate display and versatile performance, the Realme 8i would be a great choice at ₹13,999, but note that the camera isn’t its most attractive feature. It’s an exceptional device for daily usage as you have plenty of hours on the battery. If only the charging time could be reduced, this would be a clear winner in the under ₹15,000 category. For people who stay on the go and want the fast charging option, I wouldn’t recommend the Realme 8i. Its biggest selling point would be the smooth 120Hz display and its above-average gaming performance at its price. I have been using the Galaxy S22 as my primary device from the day of its release, while it’s quite impressive in everyday usage, I planned to test it outside the regular usage conditions. So I decided to take the Galaxy S22+ and the compact Galaxy S22 on a trip, and this review is my time with the two phones. The two phones share almost the same set of specifications except for display size and battery capacity. So the overall experience on both is the same, but they both suit better for different kind of users only because of their size. The company has trimmed down the phone making it a tad bit lighter at 167 grams, the design is more flush and fine too. Another visible difference is the matte-like Gorilla Glass Victus+ back which completes the glass sandwich design for this device. The in-hand feel is great and is exactly what you expect from a flagship. Samsung’s attention to detail won me over, there is nothing ‘extra’ about the Galaxy S22. The aluminum frame not only looks good but in my one week of heavy usage has managed to hold up well against scratches and smudges. It is also IP68 water and dust resistant, so rough terrains are not a problem, I had the phone in my pocket when I was crossing a pond and while my pants were soaking wet, the Galaxy S22 didn’t give me a heart attack. I usually don’t recommend not using a case, but here it’s worth it. While some might think of it as a ‘smaller’ smartphone by today’s standards, I tend to disagree. In a side-by-side comparison, it is visibly similar to my iPhone 12. The absence of a 3.5mm port doesn’t surprise me anymore. Just like the absence of a charger in the box. Samsung Galaxy S22 UI - Smooth but boring Samsung Galaxy S22 runs on Android 12 out of the box and has Samsung’s own One UI 4.1 skin on top. Samsung has mastered the amalgamation of One UI with android software by now and the result is a smooth user experience with virtually no lags, making you feel one with the device. <div type="image" title="Galaxy S22 &amp;amp; S22+ runs on Android 12" msid="90962437" hostid="261"></div> The UI is responsive and doesn’t miss out on a beat. The seamless integration between Android 12 features, and One UI shows up every now and then. Like the ‘material you’ design, which gives you unprecedented access to customize your smartphone. You can change the color palette of the skin, change themes and of course do some generic customization like putting the phone in dark mode. A change that I would personally like to recommend is switching the keyboard to the one from Google. Samsung’s default keyboard is fancy but with someone like me who has big thumbs typing on it is difficult. was not jamming well with my productivity. Coming back to the add-on they do get you excited for a while, but eventually, start to become boring. Samsung’s One UI is more or less similar across all its devices, and for a premium buyer, this can be a bit disheartening. I look forward to having a unique take on Samsung flagships in the future with respect to the UI. That being said, credit, where it’s due Samsung, has promised to provide 4 years' worth of updates for the Galaxy S22 line-up, so yes it can be deemed as a future-proof smartphone. My experience was similar on the bigger S22+ as well. Samsung Galaxy S22 and S22+ Display - Best in the business! Samsung displays are dominating the entire smartphone landscape so, to no surprise, the 6.1-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display is gorgeous. It’s well lit and with a peak brightness of 1300 nits using it under direct sunlight was no issue at all, and I am talking about peak afternoon sunlight on a farm. Watching anything on the panel is easy on the eyes, and you can make out each and every detail in a scene. That’s not all, with an adaptive refresh rate ranging from 48Hz to 120Hz, the Galaxy S22 aids your visual adventures. From browsing the internet to playing fast-paced games, adaptive refresh rate makes everything slightly better. Initially, it did miss a beat or two while adapting to a new situation but after a recent update, it switches the refresh rates effortlessly. Complimenting the display is a stereo speaker set-up which is loud for the size on offer, however, I found the volume levels to be lower for my liking but audio is still very well defined. The screen also incorporates a super-sonic fingerprint sensor, which is hands down the fastest in-display fingerprint reader I have used in a long while. A light tap and the Galaxy S22 unlocks. Throughout my trip, I must have unlocked it countless times and it didn’t miss even once. It’s fast, responsive and quite accurate so far. You also have the classic, always-on display feature, which is as useful as it should be. Reading time to notifications, it comes in handy. It does cost you battery life, but nothing significant. Quickly touching upon the Galaxy S22+ here, with a bigger 6.6-inch display, and a peak brightness of 1750 nits, and the rest remains the same. That being said it is a better choice for a consumer who likes bigger panels. And honestly, watching content was more fun on it. Part of the reason is the fact that the stereo speakers on Galaxy S22+ are much louder than what we get on regular Galaxy S22. Samsung Galaxy S22 performance - There are some hiccups! The Galaxy S22 is perhaps the first of the ‘S’ series to be launched in India with a Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset. Is this great news? Somewhat, but not entirely. The Samsung Galaxy S22 runs on Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset and the results are a bit confusing. In day to day usage, this is perhaps the best Android experience you can ask for. Everything feels smooth from something as simple as app response to boot-ups which are done in a flash. You don’t have to wait with the Galaxy S22, your commands are well received and reverted to in microseconds. The memory management is top-notch even after hours of non-usage you can jump to the exact frame in an app and carry on with your work. Now of course this is a brand new device, so the performance may vary down the line. The gaming performance was also incredible, my go-to game for testing a smartphone is BGMI, and the Galaxy S22 ran it smoothly. There were no frame drops and the game ran smoothly at maxed-out settings of extreme frame rates and Ultra HD graphic. While I was enjoying my experience, my hands were getting hot, and no it was not the adrenaline rush from the game. The Galaxy S22 does get very warm and the aluminum frame adds a more hurtful zing to it. But that’s a common trait we’ve experienced with other Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 phones too. Any task that required major chipset contribution like gaming or shooting videos resulted in a burning hot Galaxy S22. The first 10 minutes are fine, but the 11-minute mark results in heavy heat and uncomfortable temperatures. While I write this article, Samsung has pushed a new update on the Galaxy S22 which has reduced the heating issue but not drastically. Maybe a future update will fix it completely, I can only hope. This experience is a tad bit better on the Galaxy S22+ mostly because the heat dissipation on the phone is better. Coming to the battery life, the Galaxy S22 features a 3700 mAh battery, which on paper is not a lot, especially since we find 5000mAh cells on the brand’s budget devices. But is it really not enough? I disagree. On my 3 day trip when I was mostly outside, I was plugging in the Galaxy S22 once in 2 days. Ever since coming back in my generic day of usage, I have to put it on charge every night which I find to be okay, given the performance and productivity. During the testing, I used a 61W USB PD to charge the Galaxy S22. The Galaxy S22 managed a full charge in 1 hour, 33 minutes. It is indeed quite slow compared to the competition, most of which come with their own fast-charging adapters. We do have to note that the Galaxy S22 supports 25W fast charging and the Galaxy S22+ supports 45W fast charging. The Galaxy S22+ with its bigger 5000mAh battery lasts well over a day and a half with moderate to heavy usage and took 1 hour 42 minutes to charge completely with the same adapter. The integration of the chipset is seemingly in sync with the battery on board and it boils down to you, choosing between the 2 smartphones. Do note that the battery life mostly depends on your usage pattern. Touching upon the network connectivity, now this is a 5G smartphone but there is a while before I can comment on that performance. However, the network connectivity was fairly impressive and I faced no call drops with my Vi sim. Yet again, it is worth noting that your mileage may vary based on network conditions in your area. Samsung Galaxy S22 Camera - Enough for everyone? Now a 3-day trip means volumes of photos and that’s what you can expect in this section. Both the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22+ feature the same triple rear camera set-up. There is a 50MP primary sensor, a 12MP ultra-wide sensor, and a 10MP telephoto sensor. The colors might be a bit off sometimes, but they are mostly close to natural. The camera also showcased a good dynamic range and I am happy with the results. <div type="image" title="Wide angle sample from S22+" msid="90962556" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Wide angle sample from S22+&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> Thanks to the advanced aperture, night mode also performs smoothly and is not pixelated beyond recognition. Coming to the ultra-wide sensor on S22, it should suffice for most users. Yes, it’s living under the shadow of the mighty Galaxy S22 Ultra, but a variable zoom range of 0.6 to 30X is no joke by any means. You can go wide with your frames bringing in most of the subjects you want, max zoom intends to pixelate the image, but that’s natural. Still, you can flex on it. <div type="image" title="Galaxy S22&amp;#39;s camera retains vivid colors" msid="90962569" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Galaxy S22&amp;#39;s camera retains vivid colors&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> The telephoto lens performs well, and the portraits on Galaxy S22 are gorgeous and worthy of your social media feed. The edge detection is impressive, but still not as good as a Pixel 5A or iPhone 13 and the bokeh effect mostly delivers great results. <div type="image" title="Galaxy S22 performs well under natural lighting" msid="90962580" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Galaxy S22 performs well under natural lighting&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> You can also do some fun editing with your portraits in the gallery, by changing background effects after clicking the photo. The video performance of the camera set-up is stunning, with the phone able to capture 8k footage at 24fps. A generic user might never use it, but the potential in the camera setup is immense and so are the modes and filters to play with your photos. Video results are comparatively better in well-lit conditions than against what we see in darker set-ups. Can you make a film-grade clip from the camera? - No. but you can definitely count on it if you are an everyday content creator or even a vlogger. Coming to the selfie camera it is a 10MP sensor and performs decently. The colors on this one move further away from their natural state, but thankfully there is no beauty filter set on default that might spoil your frame. <div type="image" title="Selfie sample from Galaxy S22" msid="90962750" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Selfie sample from S22&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> There is portrait mode on here as well, which delivers good results. You can also create a wider frame on this one. Videos recorded from the Selfie camera are a bit noisy if the lighting is not correct. Otherwise, under natural lighting, it’s pretty well. Verdict Ever since brands have started diversifying their flagships with words like Ultra or Pro, it is usually the second in command flagships that go unnoticed in all the noise. However, both the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22+ shine through for me and seem to be a better option than their elder brother Galaxy S22 Ultra because of their value and usability. They pack in all of the best features you expect in a flagship and deliver it to the users at a significantly lesser price. My verdict is simple, these smartphones are a winner amongst the Android options. The Galaxy S22 is best suited for those who want a compact device and if you watch videos, movies, or simply want a bigger display then the Galaxy S22+ is a better choice.
