In an interaction with PTI editors at the agency's headquarters here, he said the private sector has to do the bulk of job creation, step up and do more, while creating an enabling environment and correcting imbalances, such as that of trade, are the responsibility of the government. Aggarwal also supported the government's move to offer fiscal incentives to global EV makers, including Tesla, through the new EV policy saying it is important for India to attract all kinds of investment, and globally established players will help in the development of the EV ecosystem in the country. The group's newly-listed entity <keyword id="19945904" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ola" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Ola" meta.hostid="83" meta.entityid="Ola">Ola</keyword> Electric aims to make India a global electric vehicle (EV) hub but the country has to invent an EV and energy transition paradigm for itself based on its needs as the world cannot achieve a sustainable future without India, he added. "There is a global technology transition happening and AI is a very important technology of the future, and we in India need to lead this journey. If you look at the current state, I think we are still adopters of somebody else's technology paradigms, especially in the digital world," Aggarwal said, explaining why the Ola group had set up AI start-up Krutrim last year. One of the things in Krutrim is to build AI models on Indian data, which is more attuned to Indian use cases, Indian paradigms, he said, adding, "We are making our own AI, on our own cloud, on our own chip." Despite India producing 20 per cent of the world's digital data at present, he lamented that the country does not fully own the data, as 80 per cent are stored outside, which are then processed into AI and "brought back into India and sold to us in dollars". When asked about concerns over AI leading to job losses, he allayed the apprehension saying that the IT boom created jobs in India when people feared that computers would take away jobs, and AI is a similar tool. "AI is not going to replace anyone. Maybe that future is a few decades away... We don't need to get anxious about that future right now. We need to, as a country, see that AI is going to amplify productivity. If we don't get onto the bandwagon, we will be left behind...," he asserted. In his view, Aggarwal said the way forward is for India to become experts in future technology. "Future technologies bring with it jobs of the future, supply chain of the future. And if we are global leaders, we are the fastest adoptive market of future technologies (then) jobs of the future will be built in India, supply chains of the future will be built in India. This is the only way... If we focus on protecting the past, you remain uncompetitive," he added. Sharing his take on employment generation in India, Aggarwal said, "I actually believe the private sector has to do the bulk of the job creation. The government's job is to create the enabling environment, create the fundamentals, help correct imbalances wherever they are, be it trade imbalances, etc and incentivise wherever it needs to be incentivised, like the PLI schemes." The government's steps such as the employment-linked incentives will also encourage private industry, he said, adding "But fundamentally the private sector has to step up and do more". Asked if the government is doing enough to create that ecosystem for the private sector, Aggarwal said, "I'm not in the government, so I want to put the limelight on ourselves. Is the private sector doing enough? I think we all can do more, and I'm on the same page. We all need to do more." In response to a query on his views over the government in extending the fiscal concession that companies like Tesla have been demanding from India, he said, "It is very important for India to attract all kinds of investment, especially (from) world leading companies. "Tesla is a best in class company. The more companies like these invest into India, the better it is for India, in a broad sense as well for the industry." He further said, "The (EV) ecosystem, including my company, will benefit from it, because it will raise the bar on expertise, on excellence, on talent, everything..." About the newly-listed entity Ola Electric, he said, "Our mission at Ola electric is to really make India a global EV hub." The company will build products such as electric two and three-wheelers that Indians need for the country to be able to invent an EV and energy transition paradigm for itself, different from the current global solution for sustainability that is focussed on electric luxury cars, Aggarwal added. On Ola Consumer, he said the ride-hailing mobility vertical is fairly profitable, while it is investing into the new e-commerce for which it has partnered with ONDC.

"We have already been successful in accelerating the EV adoption in the scooter segment, and with our futuristic portfolio of products, we are now focused on supercharging the EV penetration through our motorcycles," he said. Aggarwal also said Ola's indigenously developed 'Bharat 4680' cell and battery pack will be integrated with its own vehicles starting in the first quarter of FY26. The company so showcased its all-new Gen-3 platform for two-wheelers. "Coupled with the integration of our cells in our vehicles starting early next year, we are determined to chart a new course for mass EV adoption across India," Aggarwal added.

According to him, ONDC will not be limited to a few players but everyone in India - a person owning a small grocery store, a small electronics retailer or a restaurant owner - bringing millions of such people to the e-commerce marketplace and buyers will come from any consumer app. "Today, India has achieved financial inclusion in about seven-eight years with homegrown technologies like Aadhaar, UPI, QR code and more. How to order food on ONDC: A step-by-step guide

<keyword id="14907483" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jm-financial-institutional-securities-ltd-" source="Orion">JM Financial Institutional Securities Ltd.</keyword> has released its report on Open Network for <keyword id="1664180" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="digital-commerce" source="Orion">Digital Commerce</keyword> (<keyword id="5862596" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="ondc" source="Orion">ONDC</keyword>) terming the company a population-scale initiative to democratise e-commerce, the detailed report concludes that it has the potential to create a win-win scenario for incumbents as well as new entrants. The report also terms extreme operational complexity as the roadblocks for ONDC. "With its primary focus of enabling e-commerce for small retailers and MSMEs, ONDC has the potential to enhance retail digital penetration in the country at an even faster pace than what was seen during the COVID lockdowns. The network will enable a wider customer catchment to small retailers and direct customer access to MSMEs, creating millions of million-dollar businesses," said the report. Using an open source protocol, ONDC switches the approach from closed platforms to a network that creates interoperability across all on boarded applications, says the report. "This interoperability enables unbundling, which allows all participants to play to their strengths -- a banking app with millions of consumers focuses on boarding/engaging consumers while a SaaS provider for online sellers handholds the sellers. Further, the buyers get to stick to their app of choice for accessing a broad selection while sellers do not need to spend time and capital in working with multiple platforms in silos. Overall, this can drive capital efficiency for the players, helping them achieve profitability," said the report. As per the report, the roadblocks to success of ONDC include solving the chicken and egg situation between supplier and buyer on boarding, customer complaints redressal (as a fragmented process also creates gaps for the process to fall through), competition issues in case the large incumbents or massive brands are on boarded as well as those related to data privacy and ownership. "Looking at <keyword id="6358921" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="upi" source="Orion">UPI</keyword> evolution, ONDC might also need to decide on its positioning as a non-regulatory authority or becoming a rule-setting body in order to ensure that the network remains fairly attuned for the small retailer to not get marginalised," said the report. Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) has been incubated with the primary purpose of supporting grassroots-level entrepreneurship and digitising small, local retailers by making them a participant in India's e-commerce revolution. ONDC is pursuing an open protocol approach that drives interoperability between all onboarded platforms and, hence, lowering the entry barrier for a retailer to sell online. This allows a consumer on any app of his/her choice to buy from any seller across the network even if the seller might not be onboarded on the app that the customer is using. "We appreciate this move by the Indian government to take the digital revolution across the nook and corner of the country and believe that this could be a massive driver in taking India's digital penetration in retail from the current 5-7 per cent to almost 20 per cent in the next 5 years (current IBEF estimate is of 19 per cent by 2030)," said the report. We will continue with the same mindset as we look to further expand the adjusted EBITDA margin (from the current 1.2%) to our stated goal of +4-5% of gross order value," said Deepinder Goyal, Zomato Founder and CEO. Meanwhile, Zomato's arch rival Swiggy declared on Thursday that its food delivery business has become profitable, without giving any more details. Zomato now aims to get to positive adjusted EBITDA (and also profit after tax) on a consolidated basis (including quick commerce) within the next four quarters. "On the quick commerce side, while there is still a long way to go in terms of margin improvement, we are pleased with the outcomes so far in a short period of time. Zomato net loss narrows to ₹188 crore in Q4, revenue rises 70% YoY

Soon after launching food delivery on its network, ONDC is now seeing 25,000 orders a day. What makes this worrying is not just order volumes but the pricing. Data seems to suggest that ordering food on ONDC is cheaper than what it is from Zomato and <keyword id="6358977" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="swiggy" source="Orion">Swiggy</keyword>, market leaders in the food delivery space. The obvious question to ask is: Will ONDC’s food delivery service kill these existing players? <keyword id="39409" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="kotak" source="Orion">Kotak</keyword> Institutional Equities seems to believe it’s not an immediate threat to Zomato or its unlisted rival Swiggy. Currently, ONDC is offering discounts on its platform as it has just launched. According to analysis done by <keyword id="39409" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="kotak" source="Orion">Kotak</keyword>’s analysts, the lower prices are largely on account of ONDC-funded discounts, which may not sustain. Further, the variable cost of running the food delivery business is lower on a scaled-up platform such as Zomato versus a smaller player. Analysts are working on the assumption that at some point the discounts will be withdrawn at some point, thereby creating a level playing field between the players. After the initial discounts are withdrawn, ONDC will have to contend with higher costs unless it chooses not to invest in customer support, which may impact customer retention. Currently, analysts only see a limited impact on Zomato in the near term. According to Kotak, the long-term impact is, for now, tough to call. ONDC is born out of the need for an inclusive online commerce marketplace for sellers, which prevents platforms like Zomato, Swiggy, Amazon and Flipkart from becoming monopolies in their respective segments. Soon after launching delivery of food, groceries and retail, it is clocking daily orders of over 25,000. The prices currently being offered are less than what consumers are paying on other platforms. According to analysts, the lower prices are primarily due to ONDC-funded discounts. If one looks at the numbers on delivery partners, then Zomato had at the end of December 2022, 330,000 active delivery riders, which is more than third party logistics aggregators. Zomato’s delivery cost in FY23 stood at ₹75 per order. The cost of delivery depends on the number of orders delivered, which means that higher the number of orders the better are economies of scale. Experts like <keyword id="45446" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="samir-arora" source="Orion">Samir Arora</keyword> too believe that ONDC is not a threat to Zomato and Swiggy at this moment thanks to the understanding of the customer, scale and customer stickiness. Over time, ONDC will have to invest in customer support going forward if it seeks to compete with them on the same plane. While Zomato has been bringing down its delivery costs steadily, it will have to spend more towards restaurant appeasement and customer experience. It will also have to arrive at some agreement with restaurant partners on how it shares customer data. The two food-tech players have been at loggerheads with their respective restaurant partners. The National Restaurant Association has been fighting against some of the practices adopted by these two unicorns without much avail.
