The striking Emser-tiled bathrooms, which are covered in a fun pattern from floor to ceiling, are particularly eye-popping. </p><p>All of Madame Rêve's pleasantries are housed in the historic Louvre post office dating back to 1888, with spaces immersed in art that includes works from Olivier Masmonteil, Inès Longevial, and María José Benvenuto. Once a distinguished residence and later a clothing factory, the hotel is spread across three buildings that are linked by two courtyards. Two 18th-century spiral staircases are focal points; one is located in the lobby, and the other leads up to the cozy Jacques Bar serving Moroccan-themed cocktails in a room with a circular wood bar, floral wallpaper, and round comfy ottoman and couch seating. </p><p>In guest rooms, design statements abound, from herringbone laid wood floors to large leaning mirrors and pops of color. Expect courtyard or street views, and some rooms also have terraces. The prices (as low as $160 a night as of press time) are just right, making this one of my top affordable options that won't skimp on style. </p><p>If you need to focus, sink into the rounded and tufted pink couch in the coworking cafe that's open 24/7, which is rare in Paris. I visited on one of my first-ever trips to Paris and thought the lobby parlor room was a highlight with traditional furnishings, many of which are French antiques, plus floral and vine patterned wallpapers, a working fireplace, and a charming decorative harp and pianoforte. References to the theater run throughout the property, paying homage to the 18th-century playwright for which the hotel is named, with darling — albeit smaller sized — rooms and an overall ambiance and service that feels like you're staying in a stylish, historic home. </p><p>Hotel Caron de Beaumarchais's favorable rates and value make it quite popular, so I advise choosing this hotel if you're planning a trip at least three months in advance, but ideally six or more. "</p><p style="font-weight: 400;">He accused May's government of needlessly handing lucrative contracts to overseas companies.</p><p>"Between 2014 and 2017, Network Rail awarded contracts worth tens of millions of pounds to companies outside of the UK, while the NHS awarded contracts worth over a billion," he said.</p><p>"In the same period, the Ministry of Defence awarded contracts elsewhere worth over £1.5 billion pounds, even though we are under no obligation, under either European or international law, to open up defence contracts to overseas bidders."</p><p>Corbyn promised to use nationalisation to benefit UK workers.</p><p>"The next Labour government will bring contracts back in-house, ending the racket of outsourcing that has turned our public services into a cash cow for the few. We've been told that it's good - advanced even - for our country to manufacture less and less and instead rely on cheap labour from abroad to produce imports, while we focus on the City of London and the finance sector."</p><p>Citing the UK solar industry, as an example of Britain's manufacturing decline, Corbyn said: "British solar firms were hit by cuts to subsidies in 2015 and 2016 and changes to business rates for buildings with rooftop panels. As a result, between now and 2022, France is forecast to add five times as much solar capacity as the UK; Germany ten times."</p><p>"Labour will have a joined up plan to keep our industries, old and new, humming with activity. <p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container float_right"><div class="image"></div><p></p></div>The man who <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SeldwfOwuL8" target="_blank">made offers others couldn't refuse</a> once refused the movie industry's heftiest honor.<p>On March 5, 1973, Marlon Brando <a href="http://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/marlon-brando-declines-best-actor-oscar" target="_blank">declined the best actor Academy Award</a>&#xa0;for his gut-wrenching performance as Vito Corleone in "The Godfather." He did so for a very unexpected reason.</p><p>In the 1960s, Brando's career had slid into decline. His previous two movies - the famously over-budget "One-Eyed Jacks" and "Mutiny on the Bounty" - <a href="http://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/marlon-brando-declines-best-actor-oscar" target="_blank">tanked at the box office</a>. Some critics <a href="http://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title/12737/Mutiny-on-the-Bounty/articles.html" target="_blank">said</a> "Mutiny" marked the end of Hollywood's golden age, and worse still, <a href="http://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title/12737/Mutiny-on-the-Bounty/articles.html" target="_blank">rumors of Brando's unruly behavior on set</a> turned him into one of the least desirable actors to work with in some ways.</p><p>Brando's career needed saving. "The Godfather" was his defibrillator.</p><p>In the epic portrayal of a 1940s New York Mafia family directed by Francis Ford Coppola, Brando plays the patriarch, the original Don. Though the film follows his son Michael (played by Al Pacino), Vito Corleone is its spine. A ruthless, violent criminal, he loves and protects the family by any means necessary. It's the warmth of his humanity that makes him indestructible - a paradox shaped by Brando's remarkable performance.</p><p>"The Godfather" <a href="http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=godfather.htm" target="_blank">grossed nearly $135 million nationwide</a>, and is heralded as one of the greatest films of all time. <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/45th_Academy_Awards" target="_blank">Pinned against pinnacles of the silver screen</a> -<span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> Michael Caine, Laurence Olivier, and Peter O'Toole - Brando was favored to win Best Actor.</span></p><p>On the eve of the 45th Academy Awards, Brando announced that he would boycott the ceremony and send little-known actress <a href="http://www.sacheenlittlefeather.net/pages/1/index.htm" target="_blank">Sacheen Littlefeather</a> in his place. She was president of the National Native American Affirmative Image Committee.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container"><div class="image"></div><p></p></div><p>On the evening of March 5, when Liv Ullman and Roger Moore read out the name of the best actor award recipient, neither presenter parted their lips in a smile. Their gaze fell on a woman in Apache dress, whose long, dark hair bobbed against her shoulders as she climbed the stairs.</p><p>Moore extended the award to Littlefeather, who waved it away with an open palm. She set a letter down on the podium, introduced herself, and <a href="http://aaspeechesdb.oscars.org/link/045-1/" target="_blank">said</a>:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"I'm representing Marlon Brando this evening and he has asked me to tell you ... that he very regretfully cannot accept this very generous award. And the reasons for this being are the treatment of American Indians today by the film industry -"</p><p>The crowd booed. Littlefeather looked down and said "excuse me." Others in the audience began to clap, cheering her on. She continued only briefly, to "beg" that her appearance was not an intrusion and that they will "meet with love and generosity" in the future.</p><p>Watch the scene unfold:</p><h2>Why he did it</h2><p>In 1973, Native Americans had "virtually no representation in the film industry and were primarily used as extras," Native American studies scholar <a href="http://nativeamericanhistory.about.com/od/controversies/a/Brando-Littlefeather-And-The-Academy-Awards.htm" target="_blank">Dina Gilio-Whitaker wrote in a blog post on About.com</a>. "Leading roles depicting Indians in several generations of Westerns were almost always given to white actors."</p><p>But they weren't just neglected or replaced in film; they were disrespected - a realization that hurt Brando's perception of the film industry.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container float_right"><div class="image"></div><p></p></div>The following day, <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/packages/html/movies/bestpictures/godfather-ar3.html" target="_blank">The New York Times printed the entirety of his statement</a> - which Littlefeather was unable to read in full because of "<a href="http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,296481,00.html" target="_blank">time restraints</a>." Brando expressed support for the American Indian Movement and referenced the ongoing situation at Wounded Knee, where a team of 200 Oglala Lakota activists had occupied a tiny South Dakota town the previous month and was currently under siege by US military forces. He wrote:<p style="padding-left: 30px;">"The motion picture community has been as responsible as any for degrading the Indian and making a mockery of his character, describing him as savage, hostile, and evil. It's hard enough for children to grow up in this world. <p>The actor will star in Marvel's "Doctor Strange," scheduled to hit theaters November 4, 2016. The film, directed by Scott Derrickson with Jon Spaihts writing the screenplay, will follow the story of neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a horrific car accident, discovers the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions.<span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p>
<p>"Stephen Strange's story requires an actor capable of great depth and sincerity," said Producer Kevin Feige. "In 2016, Benedict will show audiences what makes Doctor Strange such a unique and compelling character."</p>
<p>Cumberbatch rose to international prominence with his critically acclaimed turn as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's most famous creation in "Sherlock," currently preparing its fourth season. The series' most recent season earned Cumberbatch the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie in 2014, after winning the BAFTA/LA Britannia Award for British Artist of the Year in 2013.<span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p>
<p>Cumberbatch most recently starred in "The Imitation Game," playing famed mathematician and logician Alan Turing, and will soon be seen in "The Hobbit: The Army of the Five Armies" as Smaug and the Necromancer. For the role of Smaug, Cumberbatch stepped into the world of motion capture to bring the dragon to life. He will next be seen in Scott Cooper's film "Black Mass," the story of Whitey Bulger coming to theaters next September, where he stars opposite Johnny Depp and Joel Edgerton.<span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p>
<p>The star's other credits include the Academy Award-winning "12 Years a Slave," "War Horse," "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy," "August: Osage County," "Star Trek Into Darkness," "The Fifth Estate," and "Parade's End." "What I noticed over the last few months that he's kind of used sport to kind of divide us, and that's something that I can't relate to. Because I know that sport was the first time I ever was around someone white."</p><p>Trump hit back at James and Lemon, calling the latter "the dumbest man on television." He added that Lemon "made Lebron look smart, which isn't easy to do."</p><p>The president wrapped up the tweet by declaring, "I like Mike!" The statement was likely a reference to NBA legend Michael Jordan, James' competitor in the debate over who the greatest NBA player of all time is.</p><p>According to <a href="https://twitter.com/GeoffRBennett/status/1025787054620327936" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NBC News</a>, Jordan released a statement through a spokesperson that said, "I support LJ. He's doing an amazing job for his community."</p><p>Trump's tweet comes less than a week after James <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lebron-james-i-promise-school-ohio-2018-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">opened the school</a> in his home town of Akron, Ohio.&#xa0;James said the school prioritizes a holistic experience for students that include sports, which he described as critical for healthy communities.</p><p>Many of James' fellow supporters from the NBA leapt to his defense after the president took aim at him.</p><p>Andrew Hawkins, a former wide receiver with the Cincinnati Bengals and the Cleveland Browns told Trump to "stop using the twitter fingers" and focus on other matters of national importance.</p><p>Utah jazz player Donovan Mitchell referred to Trump as an "insecure human being" and accused him of setting a bad example to the country.</p><p>Minnesota Timberwolves power forward Anthony Tolliver called the president's statements an "embarrassment."</p><p>Lemon himself also chimed in and brought up the Trump administration's widely criticized "zero tolerance" immigration policy that resulted in thousands of migrant families being separated, with many held in cages and detention centers. "Who's the real dummy?" Lemon asked.</p><p>CNN's communications team referenced&#xa0;<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/melania-report-trump-was-irate-she-watched-cnn-2018-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">recent reports</a>&#xa0;that Trump grew enraged when first lady Melania Trump watched CNN aboard Air Force One. It also tacked on the hashtag, "Be Best," to its tweet. The hashtag is the slogan for the first lady's childhood welfare initiative.</p><p>The first lady's spokesperson said in a statement amid the controversy that "it looks like LeBron James is working to do good things on behalf of our next generation and just as she always has, the First Lady encourages everyone to have an open dialogue about issues facing children today."</p><p>Ohio Governor John Kasich also backed James, including a statement disputing Trump's vote on the greatest NBA player of all time.</p><p>James has been a vocal critic of Trump since he took office. In one highly discussed tweet, James called Trump a "bum" and criticized him for deciding to rescind an invitation for the Golden State Warriors, the most recent NBA champions, to visit the White House. Trump rescinded the invite after Warriors point guard Stephen Curry said he would not go.</p><p>However, their relationship on Twitter hasn't always been so fraught. Athletes and politicians erupt at Trump over Twitter after he takes aim at Lebron James

<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">But now Paris's mayor, Anne Hidalgo, is arguing that the city needs new </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">high-rise construction to move into the future. </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">And she's pushing her agenda forward with the proposal of the Triangle Tower, a <span>656-foot </span>glass-and-steel tower that would be built in Paris's Montparnasse neighborhood.</span></p>

<p>On March 5, 1973, Marlon Brando <a href="http://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/marlon-brando-declines-best-actor-oscar" target="_blank">declined the Academy Award for Best Actor</a> for his gut-wrenching performance as Vito Corleone in "The Godfather" - for a very unexpected reason.</p>
<p>Here's how it went down.</p>
<h3>The Movie That Brought Brando Back</h3>
<p>In the 1960s, Brando's career had slid into decline. His previous two movies  - the famously over-budget "One-Eyed Jacks" and "Mutiny on the Bounty" - <a href="http://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/marlon-brando-declines-best-actor-oscar" target="_blank">tanked at the box office</a>. Critics <a href="http://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title/12737/Mutiny-on-the-Bounty/articles.html" target="_blank">said</a> "Mutiny" marked the end of Hollywood's golden age, and worse still, <a href="http://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title/12737/Mutiny-on-the-Bounty/articles.html" target="_blank">rumors of Brando's unruly behavior on set</a> turned him into one of the least desirable actors to work with.</p>
<p>Brando's career needed saving. "The Godfather" was his defibrillator.</p>
<p>In the epic portrayal of a 1940s New York Mafia family, Brando played the patriarch, the original Don. Though the film follows his son Michael (played by Al Pacino), Vito Corleone is its spine. A ruthless, violent criminal, he loves and protects the family by any means necessary. It's the warmth of his humanity that makes him indestructible - a paradox shaped by Brando's remarkable performance.</p>
<p>"The Godfather" <a href="http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=godfather.htm" target="_blank">grossed nearly $135 million nationwide</a>, and is heralded as one of the greatest films of all time. <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/45th_Academy_Awards" target="_blank">Pinned against pinnacles of the silver screen</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> - Michael Caine, Laurence Olivier, and Peter O'Toole - Brando was favorited to win Best Actor. </span></p>
<h3>Drama At The Awards Show</h3>
<p>On the eve of the 45th Academy Awards, Brando announced that he would boycott the ceremony and send <a href="http://www.sacheenlittlefeather.net/pages/1/index.htm" target="_blank">Sacheen Littlefeather</a> in his place. A little-known actress, she was then-president of the National Native American Affirmative Image Committee.</p>

Their gaze fell on a woman in Apache dress, whose long, dark hair bobbed against her shoulders as she climbed the stairs.</p>
<p>Moore extended the award to Littlefeather, who waved it away with an open palm. She set a letter down on the podium, introduced herself, and <a href="http://aaspeechesdb.oscars.org/link/045-1/" target="_blank">said</a>:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">"I'm representing Marlon Brando this evening and he has asked me to tell you ... that he very regretfully cannot accept this very generous award. And the reasons for this being are the treatment of American Indians today by the film industry -"</p>
<p>The crowd booed. Littlefeather looked down and said "excuse me." Others in the audience began to clap, cheering her on. She continued only briefly, to "beg" that her appearance was not an intrusion and that they will "meet with love and generosity" in the future.</p>

<h3>Why He Did It</h3>
<p>In 1973, Native Americans had "virtually no representation in the film industry and were primarily used as extras," Native American studies scholar <a href="http://nativeamericanhistory.about.com/od/controversies/a/Brando-Littlefeather-And-The-Academy-Awards.htm" target="_blank">Dina Gilio-Whitaker writes</a>. "Leading roles depicting Indians in several generations of Westerns were almost always given to white actors."</p>
<p>But they weren't just neglected or replaced in film; they were disrespected - a realization that crippled Brando's image of the industry.</p>

Brando expressed support for the American Indian Movement and referenced the ongoing situation at Wounded Knee, where a team of 200 Oglala Lakota activists had occupied a tiny South Dakota town the previous month and was currently under siege by U.S. military forces. <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">He wrote:</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">"<strong>The motion picture community has been as responsible as any for degrading the Indian and making a mockery of his character</strong>, describing him as savage, hostile and evil. It's hard enough for children to grow up in this world. When Indian children ... see their race depicted as they are in films, their minds become injured in ways we can never know."</p>
<p>A tsunami of criticism toppled over Brando and Littlefeather following the Oscars, from <a href="http://insidemovies.ew.com/2013/01/19/sacheen-littlefeather/" target="_blank">peers in the industry</a><a href="http://insidemovies.ew.com/2013/01/19/sacheen-littlefeather/" target="_blank"> and the media</a>.</p>

<p>IN THE early 1980s the distressing persistence of high unemployment in Europe was labelled "Eurosclerosis". Some now wonder whether "Amerisclerosis" is the right word to describe America's labour market. It is true that unemployment has slowly dropped from a peak of 10% in late 2009, to 7.3% at present. But this decline overstates the health of the jobs market.</p>
<p>The labour-force participation rate, the share of the working-age population either working or looking for work, has plunged from 66% in 2007 to 63.2% in August, a 35-year low. If those people who have simply dropped out of the labour force were classified as unemployed, the headline jobless rate would be much higher.</p>
<p>This drop in the participation rate is striking by international standards, too. Among 34 (mainly rich-country) OECD countries, only in Ireland and Iceland did participation rates fall farther between 2007 and 2012. In Italy and Britain, where unemployment rates have risen by a roughly similar amount as in America, labour-force participation rose (see left-hand chart).</p>
<p>Many economists believe much of this decline in participation is structural. They argue it reflects increased college enrolment by the young, the approach of retirement for the baby-boomers and a levelling-off in women's participation after rapid post-war increases. That is doubtless part of the story, but it does not explain everything. Participation rates have declined sharply for "prime-age" men and women between 25 and 54, and risen slightly for those aged 55 and over. By contrast, participation has generally risen for prime-age women in other OECD countries, and risen or fallen only slightly for men.</p>
<p>Cyclical factors are also at work. The unemployed may give up looking for work after long spells of unemployment. Bart Hobijn of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco says that in much of Europe, jobless benefits, which generally require recipients to keep looking for work, are more generous and last longer than in America. That may explain why participation rates there have not fallen. In America, he says, workers are more likely to go back to study or stay at home. The so-called U-6 unemployment rate, which includes those who want jobs but haven't looked lately or have given up, and those who work part-time because they cannot find full-time work, rose more in the past five years than the official unemployment rate.</p>
<p>In a 2011 paper* Mr Hobijn and three co-authors noted that many of those reported as newly unemployed have in fact been out of work for months but have not previously been recorded as unemployed, probably because they have taken a break from the job search. The authors reckon that these "fringe" workers are much more prevalent than in previous cycles. The big question is whether such workers will start looking for work again in time. The signs are worrying. If you look at U-6 unemployment over just the past two years, rather than the past five, it has fallen faster than official unemployment. That suggests many of the people on the periphery of the labour force have now left it entirely. One explanation for that may be government benefits that affect incentives to look for work.</p>
<h3>DI why</h3>
<p>More generous unemployment benefits tend to elevate participation rates since workers must be looking for work to qualify. With disability insurance (DI), however, the opposite applies: to qualify applicants must generally demonstrate that they cannot work. In theory, disability and unemployment should not be correlated--and from 1966 to 1985 they were not, according to a new study prepared for the Brookings Papers on Economic Activity by Olivier Coibion and two others. But in 1984 DI eligibility criteria were eased so that applicants could qualify based on a combination of conditions rather than just one. Since then, highly subjective conditions such as back pain and mental illnesses have grown to account for most DI beneficiaries, and claims have become more correlated with unemployment (see right-hand chart). That strongly suggests that many workers find a way to qualify for DI when other benefits have been exhausted.</p>
<p>Between 2007 and 2012 the number of applicants for DI shot up from 11.2 per 1,000 working-age people to 14. Unpublished research by Mary Daly of the San Francisco Fed, Richard Burkhauser of Cornell University and Brian Lucking, a graduate student, estimates that this rise in applications equates to 2.6m people. Depending on how many of those applicants are eventually awarded benefits, this could explain between 31% and 59% of the decline in participation among 16-to-64-year-olds.</p>
<p>These results suggest that if it were not for people receiving disability insurance, reported unemployment would be far higher. Although DI recipients may initially have climbed because the economy was weak, their numbers will almost certainly not decline when it strengthens again; only 4% of beneficiaries return to work within ten years. The proportion of working-age adults on DI has risen from 1.3% in 1970 to 4.6% in 2013. The impact on participation rates may be cyclical at first and then become structural.</p>
<p>Europe may have useful lessons here. In the 1970s DI became more generous in the Netherlands, and case loads exploded. Had the increase in disability numbers shown up in unemployment instead, the Dutch unemployment rate, which was 6% in 1980, would have been 13.4%, according to a 1992 report by Mr Burkhauser and two co-authors. The crushing expense of DI eventually forced the Dutch government to make reforms about a decade ago, primarily by making employers bear more of the expense of employees who end up on the system. Since then, case loads have dropped. America, whose DI trust fund is expected to run dry in 2016 on current trends, should show similar resolve.</p>
