But I am not new to Ola. I have taken many Ola rides during vacations in India where Ola has become the standard means of transport and is more popular than Uber. My parents, who weren't the most app-savvy till about a few years ago, have switched to Ola instead of taking their Hyundai out and so has a large part of the smartphone-savvy Indian population. However, back in London, it's always been Uber or Kapten for me. But I decided to give Ola a try on Monday evening and here's how I think it's different from its peers.Spriha Srivastava/Business Insider I took a short journey, and used the £5 ($6.46) introductory voucher from Ola. The app is pretty straightforward and easy to use. It gives you the option to add a few stops, and a range of cars to choose from. These are categorized as "Comfort," "Comfort XL" and Exec. Upon selecting your choice of car, a waiting time is shown and you are then connected to Ola drivers in your area.I selected a Comfort Ola, with a waiting time of 5 minutes. Now, here's where Ola is different from all the other ride-hailing services I have taken. Once you confirm your ride, the app sends you a start code, which is written on the left hand corner of the app. When you sit in the car, the driver asks for this code in order to start the journey. Without this code, a journey cannot be activated. Spriha Srivastava/Business InsiderI sat in my ride and was welcomed by the driver as his "first Ola customer." The driver, David, whose name we changed because of privacy concerns, said he worked for all the ride-hailing apps in London. This includes a long list of Uber, Bolt, Kapten, ViaVan and now Ola. Upon asking him which one he likes the best, he said Bolt because they cut the lowest commission from drivers. "Ola is currently offering zero commissions till March 20. I am not sure what happens after that," he said. David, however, wasn't very pleased with the launch of another ride-hailing app."It's the same customers but more companies. As drivers, we don't have loyalty toward any of them. It will be so easy if there was a single service for both drivers and riders," he said. While on the ride, I began playing around with the app and realized another feature that was very different from Ola's peers - the safety icon. It is conveniently placed on the right-hand side, at the top of the app. Upon clicking it, you get an alarming red message that asks you to swipe in the event of an emergency and promises the safety team will be in contact immediately. The Indian ride-hailing app's launch on Monday saw front-page ads as well as a huge presence on social media. I took a ride in SoftBank-backed Ola cabs on its launch day in London and saw first-hand how it's different than Uber

Ola introduces in-app 'tipping' facility globally

Ride-hailing major <keyword id="6354720" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ola">Ola</keyword> on Monday announced its strategic partnership with <keyword id="6357886" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="phonepe">PhonePe</keyword> to enhance its digital payments experience for its customers. Ola users can now access experience on the Ola app. Currently, the feature has been rolled out on Android and will be available on iOS soon. "As PhonePe continues to drive digital payment adoption across the country, we are excited to partner with them to drive this seismic change that will enable us to move a step closer to becoming a Digital India," Anand Subramanian, Spokesperson at Ola, said in a statement. This partnership will also enable PhonePe to offer their services to millions of customers on the Ola platform. "We are excited to partner with Ola, India's leading mobility services provider, to enable a seamless and convenient payment experience for our customers," added Ankit Gaur, Director, Business Development at PhonePe. As part of an introductory offer, customers can avail up to Rs 200 in cashback on the first two rides when paid using PhonePe, said Ola.

It also incentivised the switch over to electric cabs. Ola seems to be honouring the tradition of black cabs by being the only app that can be used by both black cabs and private hire vehicles (PHVs) in the area. In March 2019, Ola expanded to Liverpool, Birmingham and Reading. Ola already made its presence felt in Australia and New Zealand before moving to Europe. Ola’s expansion news comes as the company is reportedly going for an IPO soon. The rumours of a possible IPO turned strong after it raised fresh funding of ₹35.88 crores from Seoul-based ARK Ola pre-IPO Fund. The Bhavish Aggarwal-led company has been actively entering new markets across the world, and had also recently set up a technology hub in the Bay Area.

Ola completes a million rides in the UK and expands to two more cities

New Delhi, Mar 20 () Ride-hailing firm Ola has suspended shared rides temporary in an effort to curb spread of coronavirus that has killed over 10,000 persons so far globally. "In our efforts to curb the spread of COVID-19, we are temporarily suspending the 'Ola Share' category until further notice," the company said in a statement on Friday. Ola users have an option to take ride that can be shared with other customers which costs less than standalone ride. "The temporary suspension of Ola Share services is an attempt to encourage social distancing for all cases of essential travel for citizens," the statement said. The company said it will continue to provide micro, mini, and prime as well as rental and outstation services rides. PRS HRS

Indian cab-hailing giant Ola has launched in the UK to challenge Uber - and they both share a big investor

The news come just two days after Mahindra and Mahindra announced the launch of its ride hailing service Glyd which would be using only Electric Vehicles (EVs). The subsidiary company had come into being when Ola tried to push its electric mobility program in Nagpur in partnership with Mahindra. While the plan didn’t take off in Nagpur roads with drivers even reportedly returning the vehicles, Ola has stuck to its plan to bring 1 million Electric Vehicles on Indian roads by 2022. This venture seems to be a part of Ola’s bigger plans of doing more than just putting cabs on the roads. Through Ola Electric, the company has already partnered with several OEMs and battery manufacturers, while looking at working with the automotive industry for solutions for electric vehicles. According to the company’s official statement, they are currently running several pilots to deploy electric vehicles and charging solutions, including battery swapping stations, electric 2-wheeler and 3-wheeler services amongst others. “At Ola Electric, our mission is to enable sustainable mobility for everyone. Ola gets fresh funds to take on Mahindra’s Glyd – where’s Uber?

New Delhi, Dec 6 () Ride hailing firm Ola on Friday said it aims to double the scale of business in Australia and New Zealand by 2021.
 The company announced to expand its presence to 33 locations from 11 cities in these countries January with the roll-out of service expected to start from next week onwards.
 "With over 85,000 driver-partners signed up, Ola is the fastest-growing ride sharing player in the region. The company aims to double its scale by 2021," Ola said in a statement.
 A company source said the firm is looking to double the scale of business across parameters such as revenue, customers, driver-partners and the number of rides.
 Currently, the company provides service in three cities in New Zealand and eight cities in Australia.
 Ola said it is "set to launch in 11 new locations each in Australia and New Zealand, taking its total presence across 33 cities in the region".
 "We have seen a phenomenal response to our services across Australia and New Zealand since our launch in February last year. Ola's competitive edge lies in offering better value fares to customers and a better deal for drivers, who earn more from every ride, and bringing industry-leading safety-tech innovations to the local market," said Simon Smith, head of international, Ola.
 Ola began its international foray last year with Australia being the first country to launch. Within a span of a few months, Ola expanded its services to the UK and then New Zealand in quick succession.
 Recently, Ola was granted a Private Hire Vehicle (PHV) licence by the Transport for London and is subsequently starting to onboard drivers ahead of launching its service in London.
