Ola wants to re-enter the quick commerce business to take on Blinkit and Swiggy Instamart

The agency's zonal office here raided at least six premises in Leh town of Ladakh, Jammu in J-K and Sonipat in Haryana in the case against A R Mir and others. It is alleged that 2,508 investors deposited more than Rs 7.34 crore in a fake cryptocurrency business in the name of "<keyword id="22638371" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Emollient-Coin-Limited" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Emollient Coin Limited" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Emollient Coin Limited">Emollient Coin Limited</keyword>". They, however, did not get any returns or currency back, and these funds were laundered by the business' promoters to purchase land assets in Jammu. The money laundering case stems from a March 2020 FIR registered in Leh and some other complaints filed in the Union Territory (UT) of Jammu and Kashmir (J-K) against Mir and Ajay Kumar Choudhary. Police in Leh in their FIR stated that an inquiry was conducted by a committee formed by the local district magistrate against Mir and his agents who were running the "fake" cryptocurrency business (Emollient Coin Limited) from a office located at the Anjuman Moin-Ul-complex, opposite SNM Hospital, in Leh. The committee sealed this office during inquiry on charges of "cheating many innocent individuals by assuring them to double their investment", according to the FIR. The accused lured people of the UT of Ladakh and some other places to purchase "Emollient Coin" using cash or transferring money into bank accounts, according to Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials. The depositors were also duped in the name of "Bitcoins" with the assurance of returns up to 40 per cent with a lock-in period of 10 months, the probe agency said. Investors were dished out a commission of up to seven per cent of the investment made by the people on their reference in the business, thereby forming a multi-level marketing chain, the ED found. A total of 2,508 people invested Rs 7,34,36,267 in the investment plan offered by Mir and the company (Emollient) floated by him that was incorporated in September 2017 and had its registered office in London. A man, Henry Maxwell, living in the UK capital, was its director. The company had two promoters in India -- Naresh Gullia and Channi Singh. The company was "deliberately" dissolved in March 2019, and Mir along with Choudhary launched a real estate business and acquired lands in Jammu from the funds generated by the fake cryptocurrency trade, according to the ED. ED undertakes first-ever searches in Ladakh in crypto fraud case

Here are some ways for retail investors to invest in unlisted space: Pre-IPO investment Pre-IPO (initial public offering) trading means buying/selling the shares of a company before it gets listed on the stock exchanges. Since these shares are not traded in the public market, you do not have a marketplace like stock exchange to buy it. Unlisted shares can be bought through intermediaries and platforms who specialise in sourcing and placement of unlisted shares and can facilitate the trade. Intermediaries and platforms buy shares from employees i.e., employee stock options (ESOP), existing investors and offers new investors who are keen to invest. In the last few years, the pre-IPO market has opened up and is now available to the masses. Some investment firms like Analah Capital, TradeUnlisted and Unlistedkart have portals to help investors buy unlisted shares. Shares of these unlisted companies will be held in a demat account. According to Unlistedkart, depending on the unlisted share, the minimum amount can be between ₹ 25,000–₹ 50,000. Other investment platforms have not mentioned a threshold of minimum investment. As per India’s market regulator’s rules, all pre-IPO shares are locked in for six months from the date of listing. It means you cannot sell stocks before six months from the date of listing. In case of unlisted securities, if the stock is sold within 24 months, it’s considered short term. The gains are added to the income of the person and taxed at a tax slab rate applicable to you. And if sold after 24 months, it is taxed as long term capital gains at 20% after indexation. However, remember unlisted shares are illiquid and volatile, so you may not be able to sell your shares in a hurry. Since the pre-IPO market is mostly dominated by institutional players and the transaction among them is generally slower which makes it difficult to sell shares and get money any time of the day. According to sources, Kondeshan would depart from Bhavish Aggarwal-run electric mobility company on July 2, just 14 months after joining. According to his LinkedIn profile, Kondeshan joined Ola Electric Mobility from Visa where he worked for three years in Mumbai. Before Visa, he was Senior HR Manager at Bajaj Allianz Life. Ola Electric, facing a government probe in battery fires along with other EV players, has seen some high-profile exits in recent months. Nidhi Chaturvedi Jha quit Ola Electric as regional head in May and joined Amazon. In April, chief marketing officer Varun Dubey left the company due to "personal reasons". Earlier, Dinesh Radhakrishnan, who was the chief technology officer (CTO) at Ola Electric, moved on from the company. According to his LinkedIn profile, he was appointed CTO at Ola Electric in May last year. Meanwhile, Arun Sirdeshmukh who was head of Ola Cars, which is the used car commerce division of the company, announced his departure from the company. "Ola has reassessed its priorities and decided to shut down Ola Dash - its quick commerce business. The total addressable market for quick commerce in India stands at $45 billion, and urban areas are driving this market on the back of mid-high-income households. <keyword id="830092" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="zomato" source="Orion">Zomato</keyword> on Friday poured Rs 4,447 crore into acquiring quick-commerce grocery delivery platform Blinkit. In December 2021, Swiggy announced to pour $700 million into Instamart. Last month, 10-minute delivery platform Zepto raised $200 million, taking its valuation to around $900 million. Ola Electric is also facing scrutiny over faulty batteries in its electric two-wheelers, among other EV players like Okinawa Autotech, Pure EV, Jitendra Electric Vehicles, and Boom Motors, by the government. The Bureau of Indian Standard (BIS), which comes under the Union Consumer Affairs Ministry, has published the "performance standards for electronic vehicle batteries" in a bid to keep a strict control over the manufacturing of EV batteries. Through the challenge, students were asked to submit project ideas/proposals across four business cases – mobility, self-driven cars, dark kitchens in food business and financial services. The winners of the challenge were Garima Pandey and Dimple Chandra from Mudra Institute of Communications, Ahmedabad (MICA). They presented a solution for the unique problem of streamlining driver partners and customer transactions at airports across cities. Ola is also an active campus recruiter. This year, the company plans to hire 150 students from premier institutes across India. “Ola strives to create a growth-led, entrepreneurial culture, where employees get to jump in head first and take control of their career paths very early on. <ul><li>Section 80JJAA of the Income Tax Act gives deduction for three years to employers for hiring new people.</li><li>The current limit of this provision is ₹300,000 a year that effectively means that the compensation of these people should be less than ₹25,000.</li><li>If the limit is increased, it could help in boosting the salaries of and the number of jobs for gig workers.</li></ul>One of the major concerns raised by the gig workers — such as <keyword id="4235145" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="delivery-partners" source="Orion">delivery partners</keyword>, drivers and more — who work for companies like Zomato, Swiggy, BigBasket and Blinkit (Grofers), is <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/startups/news/bigbasket-flipkart-and-urban-company-may-have-paid-fair-wages-but-it-wasnt-enough-to-earn-a-living/articleshow/88946309.cms">the lack of decent compensation</a>. But what if we were to tell you that if an existing provision of the Income Tax Act is clarified and amended, it could raise salaries for the gig workers. Under Section 80JJAA provision of the Indian Income Tax Act, companies can get a tax deduction for hiring new people. If a company’s workforce increased by 50, the salary paid to these employees would make the company eligible for an additional deduction of 30% for the next three financial years, Hemal Zobalia, Partner at Deloitte Haskins &amp; Sells LLP explains. For example, if the company is paying ₹1000 annually to each of these 50 employees, it will get ₹300 as tax deduction for each of them for each of the next three years. Essentially, 90% of the first year’s salary, for each of the new employees, will be deducted from the company’s taxable profit. The goal of this provision is to create more permanent employment for those who are “low-skilled”, according to Jimit Devani, a partner at Deloitte Haskins &amp; Sells. The provision is applicable for employees whose salaries are ₹25,000 per month or less.Increasing the salary limit to ₹35,000-₹40,000 may push more companies to hire permanent employees instead of contractual ones. Meanwhile, Zobalia is of the belief that this would also help in further increasing their payout and salaries. But there is a bigger challenge here. This is not a widely availed incentive by the companies for several reasons. First, companies prefer to hire people on contract and keep them on a third party’s payroll. Such companies cannot avail tax benefit under the 88JJAA provision. Bringing people on to the payroll makes them eligible for other benefits like pension, insurance, and severance to name a few, Devani said. The third parties, however, do avail these tax benefits for employees that have been on their payroll for at least eight months, Devani added. The second issue with this provision is that the benefit is available only on the net addition of employees. Say, a company has a total of 10 employees. Five of them quit the company in a year, and six more are hired in the same year. While the company has six new employees, the net addition to the workforce is only one. And, so, the tax rebate is available only for one additional employee, and not all six. Improving this provision under the income tax law may go a long way in creating sustainable employment for people with less-valued skills, across a range of industries including the gig economy of which the likes of Zomato, Swiggy, Amazon and Flipkart are part of. The current state of salaries in the gig economy As per <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/startups/news/urban-company-ola-uber-are-not-the-best-places-for-gig-workers/articleshow/88561764.cms">Fairwork India report of 2021</a>, most newage digital platforms — including Zomato, Swiggy, Uber, Dunzo, PharmEasy and Ola — do not offer fair wages to the contractual workers associated with them.
