Ola’s latest AI feature will ensure the company tracks your ride for any emergency

New Delhi, Dec 23 () Ride hailing platform Ola on Monday said it will expand its AI-enabled safety feature 'Guardian' to 17 cities across India and Australia.
<p> The 'Guardian' feature uses real-time data from rides to automatically detect irregular trip activity, including prolonged stops and unexpected route deviations.
</p><p> These alerts are flagged off in real-time to Ola's 24x7 Safety Response Team that immediately reach out to customers and drivers to confirm if they're safe and offer on-the-call assistance until ride completion.
</p><p> "After running a successful pilot across multiple cities in India and international markets, the 'Guardian' feature is going live in 16 Indian cities as well as Perth in Australia. Ola aims to take Guardian to more cities in the coming quarter," Ola said in a statement.
</p><p> It added that Ola Guardian is built on artificial intelligence and machine learning capabilities on the Ola platform which enables it to continuously learn and evolve from millions of data points to improve risk signalling and instant resolution.
</p><p> Apart from the four metros, the feature will be available in Bengaluru, Pune, Hyderabad, Bhubaneshwar, Chandigarh, Nagpur, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Coimbatore, Indore and Trichy.

</p><p> Ola said it also conducts mandatory verification through stringent criminal records checks as well as mandatory online training for drivers that includes modules like customer service and etiquette, platform usage, partner support, defensive driving amongst others.
</p> "To prevent driver impersonation, Ola has put in place a facial recognition system in place, which prompts on-duty drivers to upload a selfie and authenticate themselves multiple times in between rides. We spoke to a couple of drivers in Delhi who seemed to be blissfully unaware of the strike and claim they are happy and have 'no problem' with the company. Uber itself says that only Mumbai and Pune have been affected by the strikes and it’s business as usual in other cities.<br /><br />In a statement to the press, an Uber spokesperson said:<br /><br /><em>We regret the disruption caused to our rider and driver community by a small group of individuals. We remain committed to serving the city, ensuring driver partners can continue to access stable earning opportunities, while giving riders a convenient option to get around their city. The Hon’ble Bombay High Court issued an injunction prohibiting unions, their leaders and anybody else from obstructing the activities of Uber driver partners. We welcome this, and hope that it will enable drivers to stay behind the wheel, something many have been telling us they wish to do.</em><br /><br /><em>We have been listening to our driver partners all along and are committed to ensuring that Uber remains an attractive entrepreneurial opportunity for them. While the authorities have taken steps to ensure minimal disruption to our rider and driver communities, we hope that they will continue to enforce the order passed by the High Court.</em><br /><br />However, it's no secret that disgruntled cab drivers who bought in on the rosy picture painted by Uber and Ola, promising a lucrative career and a chance to squeeze into the middle class have today realised that it was nothing but a pipe dream. <br /><br />Initially promised earnings over a lakh per month, people from various walks of lives decided to give up their full-time jobs and even land to cash-in on this. However, today these drivers are finding it difficult to scrounge up enough money to pay up the loans taken to buy their cars.<br /><br />But this isn’t the first time we’ve heard this story. Drivers in India have been complaining about reduced incentives and overall earnings from Uber and Ola for a while now. The companies initially offered huge overhead payouts to them, but now takes approximately 25% cut from each of their trips. While both companies still do have some incentives in place, drivers say they are more difficult to achieve and working for Uber and Ola isn’t the “joyride” it once used to be.<br /><br /><strong>Examples overseas...<br /></strong><br />When strikes against Uber first broke out in London back in 2016, Uber’s impact on Black Cab drivers’ income was one of the cornerstones of the movement. “Unite, the union that represents many black-cab drivers, claims the government is biased against their trade and claims light-touch regulation will threaten passenger safety as well as drivers’ incomes,” <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2016/feb/10/black-cab-drivers-uber-protest-london-traffic-standstill">the Guardian</a> wrote at the time.<br /><br />These strikes have become somewhat commonplace and except for one big win for Uber drivers in the UK in November last year, the results, for the drivers at least, have always been wanting. In the UK, a panel ruled that <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/world/2017/11/10/british-panels-rules-uber-drivers-employees-not-contractors/851388001/">Uber drivers are employees and not contractors</a>, and therefore entitled to basic protections such as minimum wage and vacation pay.<br /><br />In September last year, Uber was <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2017/sep/22/uber-licence-transport-for-london-tfl">denied the licence to operate by Transport for London</a> (TfL) claiming that the company was not a “fit and proper” operator. Uber’s failure to report ‘serious criminal offences, obtaining medical certificates and driver background checks’ was the main reason behind this decision. This move affected the 40,000 people who worked for Uber, not to mention its 3.5 million users. In 2015, local <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/jul/24/rio-de-janeiro-uber-protest-taxis">cab drivers in Rio de Janeiro protested against Uber</a> because they claimed they were the “official” drivers who were strictly regulated and fewer overhead costs gave them a ‘competitive advantage’. In 2016, Uber decided to cease operations in Austin, Texas because it didn’t find it feasible to comply with the regulation to fingerprint and run thorough background checks on all its drivers. In 2014, both Berlin and Hamburg, Germany voted to ban Uber because it did not <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2014/aug/14/uber-taxi-service-banned-berlin-safety-grounds">‘do enough to protect its passengers from unlicensed drivers’</a>.<br /><br />The common thread of grievance is a predictable trio -- local taxi operators revolting against Uber’s competitive advantage, security concerns based on Uber’s slack regulation over the choice of drivers with regards to proper background checks, and unethical treatment of drivers. All of these complaints have been cited in India as well, but this is the second time such protests have sprung in as many years. Last year, the Sarvodaya Driver Association of Delhi (SDAD) called for a strike in Delhi against Uber and Ola on similar grounds, though the companies escaped unscathed at the time.<br /><br /><strong>Taking cues...<br /></strong><br />The current strike in India hopes to achieve similar results. “This time things will be different because they have partnered with us,” says <keyword id="165480" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sanjay-Naik">Sanjay Naik</keyword>, president of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena's (MNVS) transport wing. He believes that the <a href="http://indianexpress.com/article/india/maharashtra-taxi-rules-discriminates-between-black-and-yellow-cabs-and-app-based-taxi-services-bombay-hc-4780461/">privileges that are mandated by law to the Mumbai Kaali Peeli’ (black-and-yellow) taxi drivers</a> should also be applicable to Ola and Uber cabs so that all drivers can benefit from them. He wants the implementation of the <a href="https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/news/national/some-relief-for-cab-taxi-operators-in-maharashtra/article9921977.ece">BC Khatua Committee’s proposal</a> that includes ‘relaxation of several provisions of the Maharashtra City Taxi Scheme, including lowering the permit fees for all types of cars to a flat ₹10,000 instead of a graded system ranging from ₹75,000 to ₹2.6 lakh under the City Taxi rules.’ <br /><br />He also accused the companies of giving preference to cabs owned by the companies instead of driver-owned cabs. In India, Uber offers to buy cabs that are then passed on to drivers. Drivers effectively work off their debt to the company, by paying a monthly instalment to them. What Naik is insinuating is that Uber gives these drivers more rides than those who register their own cars on the service.<br /><br />What is most interesting, however, is that MNVS hasn’t ruled out going into business for themselves. Naik told us that if things don’t work out, they will consider bringing all the drivers together under one umbrella and take out the middlemen (Ola and Uber). <br /><br />However, for now, the organisation has reached out to the police to get the ‘decision makers’ from these companies to meet them and the government, in order to come to an amicable decision that will not only benefit the drivers monetarily but also implement regulations so that all drivers come under the same law and benefit from it. <br /><br />With the predictable spate of grievances by Uber drivers, commuters and local taxi operators, will Maharashtra take a cue from international events and tighten the leash on the private taxi operators? If it does, will that, in turn, set the precedent for the rest of the country?<br /><br /><em><br />UPDATE: Ola shared the statement below with us today.<br /></em><em><br />“Interest of our driver partners and customer convenience is of paramount importance to us. While, we have seen a slight improvement in our services in Mumbai, however for the situation to improve significantly it is imperative that intimidation of driver partners and vandalism of their cars by vested interests be stopped. New economy companies like us are counting on the police for normalcy to return.”</em><br />

Indian drivers may finally be taking cues from global movements against on-demand cab services

The <keyword id="457486" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Eligibility-cum-Entrance-Test" source="Orion">National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test</keyword> (NEET) will be held in 13 languages at centres across the country. <br /><br /> "The last date for submission of online application form is May 6. Candidates must strictly follow the instructions given in the information bulletin and on the <keyword id="10188882" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NTA-website" source="Orion">NTA website</keyword>. Candidates not complying with the instructions shall be summarily disqualified," a senior NTA official said. <br /><br /> "Candidates must ensure that the e-mail address and mobile number provided in the online application form are their own or of parents and guardians only as all information and communication will be sent by NTA through e-mail on the registered e-mail address or SMS on the registered mobile number only," the official added. <br /><br /> Last year, the <keyword id="13561404" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NEET-Undergraduate-exam" source="Orion">NEET-Undergraduate exam</keyword> was held on September 12, with over 95 per cent of the registered candidates appearing for it. <br /><br /> Over 15.44 lakh candidates had appeared for the exam which was conducted at 3,858 centres in 13 languages in 2021. NEET entrance exam to be held on July 17, registration begins

New Delhi, Jan 9 () Ride hailing platform Uber on Thursday said it will roll out new safety features, including a PIN verification for starting trips and RideCheck for long, unexpected stops, for users in India.
<p>Interestingly, Uber's rival Ola already offer some of these features on its platform. It launched the OTP feature in 2017, while Ola Guardian feature was launched in September 2018 and recently in over 16 cities globally.
</p><p>Through 'Guardian', Ola tracks all on-going trips by analysing ride indicators like route deviations, unexpected and midway stops. Based on the indicators and time of travel, Ola's Safety Response Team (SRT) provides assistance to customers.
</p><p>Under the PIN verification feature, Uber users will receive a four-digit code when they book a ride that is to be shared with the driver partner to start the ride. Users will have to activate the feature in the app's setting.
</p><p>Uber Senior Director of Global Safety Products Sachin Kansal said the feature is under pilot and should be rolled out to users in the next few weeks.
</p><p>"In addition to the PIN, we are also working on advanced technologies that will feature ultrasound waves to automatically transmit the PIN for verifying rides," he added.
</p><p>The RideCheck feature will enable Uber to flag certain trip irregularities, like long, unexpected stops or midway drops that might, in some rare cases, indicate an increased safety risk, especially for women.
</p><p>"If an anomaly is detected, Uber will initiate a RideCheck by reaching out to both the rider and the driver through a push notification," Kansal said.
</p><p>He added that the feature is being rolled out and will be available to all users in the country over the next two weeks.
</p><p>Also, a pilot is being run in Delhi and Kolkata to see if riders would prefer a call over a push notification, Kansal said.
</p><p>Talking about the audio recording feature, he said both riders and driver partners can record audio during the ride.
</p><p>"This audio is encrypted and can only be either deleted or shared with Uber. Neither party will be able to hear the recording. Once shared, the audio can help our agents better understand the issue and resolve them," he said.
</p><p>The feature is currently in pilot in Mexico and Brazil, and Uber will look at testing it in the Indian market later this year.
</p><p>Kansal said privacy is an important aspect and Uber will ensure compliance with local laws.
</p>"Over the last three years, we have introduced several features to enhance safety standards on our platform. We have been piloting and refining these features in different markets globally to ensure that they work for riders and driver partners," Kansal said.  SR  BAL

Many are seeking refuge in Palu's main airport.&#xa0;</strong></li><li><strong>Local and military officials have arranged for a mass burial site in Palu for the dead.</strong></li><li><strong>Reports indicate that the country's early detection designed to provide advanced tsunami warnings were not working.</strong></li></ul><p>&#xa0;</p><p>The full scope of devastation in the city of Palu in indonesia is becoming clearer, days after an earthquake and tsunami hit the region.&#xa0;</p><p>Scores of people are thought to still be trapped in the rubble on the island of&#xa0;<span>Sulawesi</span>, which was hit by a magnitude 7.5 earthquake and a subsequent tsunami with waves reaching as high as 20 feet.&#xa0;</p><p>Citing government officials, local media said at least 1,200 people were killed&#xa0;<a href="https://www.npr.org/2018/10/01/653268266/indonesian-tsunami-death-toll-hits-1-200-survivors-desperate-for-aid">NPR reported</a>&#xa0;on Monday. Other estimates put the <a href="http://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-10-01/indonesia-quake-death-toll-rises-preparations-for-mass-burial/10325792">death toll around 844</a>.</p><p>Officials have warned the number of casualties could rise as rescuers clear debris scattered by massive waves. Downed power lines have left parts of the city in darkness.</p><p><span>Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, a spokesman for the Indonesian National Board for Disaster Management, posted video showing the moment the tsunami battered the island's coast on Friday.</span></p><p>Nugroho also posted video of the moment when the earthquake hit the area earlier on Friday. People can be seen fleeing as buildings around them collapse.</p><p>He said at the time that victims could still trapped in the surrounding area, adding that Palu's Petobo neighborhood was devastated, and said there were still "hundreds of victims buried in mud."</p><p><a href="https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/indonesia-quake-neighborhood-buried-final-embrace-58211144">ABC News</a>&#xa0;confirmed that some victims were found "entombed" in mud, most of the casualties were caused by the quake and the tsunami, though hundreds of others were buried alive under soil that had loosened and collapsed after the earthquake in a process known as liquefaction. Special rescue teams arrived on Monday to begin digging.</p><h2>Victims buried in mass graves&#xa0;</h2><p>Local and military officials have arranged for a mass burial site in Palu for the overwhelming number of victims. According to Sutopo, officials worry that a delay in burying the victims could create a new health crisis.&#xa0;</p><p>According to The <a href="http://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-10-01/indonesia-quake-death-toll-rises-preparations-for-mass-burial/10325792">Australian Broadcasting Corporation</a>, relatives have sifted through body bags searching for their loved ones. Victims in local hospitals have been photographed to help families locate their bodies.&#xa0;</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>According to ABC, local army commander Tiopan Aritonang said 545 bodies&#xa0;were to be brought from one hospital alone. The gravesite could be enlarged if necessary, officials added.&#xa0;</p><p>Across the island, around 50,000 people remained displaced as the main Palu airport was damaged and operating with only one functioning runway as of Tuesday, according to the <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/live/2018/oct/02/indonesia-tsunami-palu-aid-food-shortages-video-death-toll-sulawesi">Guardian</a>.&#xa0;</p><p>Thousands of people sought refuge at the airport, which forced it to shut down temporarily.&#xa0;</p><h2>Early detection warning systems failed&#xa0;</h2><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>Reports indicate that the country's early detection warning systems were not working before the tsunami hit.</p><p>Officials confirmed to the <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-45704438">BBC</a> that a network of more than 20 floating detection units connected to underwater sensors which transmit advance tsunami warnings to the Indonesian meteorology and geophysics agency had either been damaged or stolen.</p><p>The system had not worked since 2012, and an apparent lack of funding hasn't helped.&#xa0;</p><p>"If we look at the funding, it has decreased every year," disaster agency spokesperson&#xa0;<span>Sutopo</span> told local media Sunday.</p><p>A tsunami warning was still issued, but it appeared to significantly underestimated the scale of the impending waves. Indonesia's geophysics agency warned of a tsunami nearly 10 feet tall, but <a href="http://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-09-30/indonesia-tsunami-sensors-missed-huge-waves-official-says/10321330">lifted the warning shortly after it was issued</a>.</p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>Many people didn't recieve alerts at all because of non-functioning power lines and a lack of storm sirens along the coast.
