New Delhi, As global layoffs deepen, Indian startups are not far behind and have sacked thousands of employees in the past 3-4 months, with many more to be given pink slips in the coming months amid deepening funding winter. In <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>, more than 21,000 employees have been laid off by more than 70 startups to day, including from unicorns like BYJU'S, <keyword id="6354720" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="ola" source="Orion">Ola</keyword>, MPL, Innovaccer, Unacademy, Vedantu, Cars24, <keyword id="2808667" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="oyo" source="Orion">OYO</keyword>, Meesho, Udaan and many more. The edtech sector has laid off the most employees, with 16 edtech startups laying off more than 8,000 employees to date. With the onset of January, more and more Indian companies are slashing jobs across the spectrum. The new year has already seen more than 16 homegrown startups sack employees in the country. Social media company <keyword id="3358959" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="sharechat" source="Orion">ShareChat</keyword> (Mohalla Tech Pvt Ltd) has laid off 20 per cent of its workforce due to uncertain market conditions. Backed by Twitter, Google, Snap and <keyword id="526777" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="tiger-global" source="Orion">Tiger Global</keyword>, ShareChat has about 2,300 employees, and the layoff impacted about 500 people at the company, Healthtech unicorn Innovaccer has sacked nearly 245 employees, or about 15 per cent of its workforce, across teams in India and the US. Innovaccer cofounder and CEO Abhinav Shashank cited an "uncertain macroeconomic environment" as the reason behind the job cuts, according to an internal mail sent to employees and accessed by leading startup news portal Inc42. This was the second layoff at the company in around 4-5 months' time amid the deepening funding winter and recession fears. In September last year, Innovaccer laid off nearly 120 employees, or less than 8 per cent of its workforce. Online food delivery platform <keyword id="6358977" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="swiggy" source="Orion">Swiggy</keyword> confirmed that the company is laying off 380 employees as food delivery growth slows. MediBuddy, an end-to-end digital healthcare platform in India, has laid off 8 per cent of its workforce, around 200 people, across all departments as a restructuring exercise. Homegrown online vehicle repair platform GoMechanic, backed by <keyword id="563136" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sequoia-india" source="Orion">Sequoia India</keyword>, has laid off 70 per cent of its workforce as the startup struggles to raise funds amid serious concerns of accounting troubles. The company has asked the remaining staff to work without pay for three months, according to reports. Ola Electric's head of charging Yashwant Kumar quits

Bloomberg reported that the US-based company explored selling the India business, but "suspended discussions after tech startup valuations cratered." In a statement shared with IANS, an Uber spokesperson said the company never explored exiting India -- not even for a minute -- and the report is "categorically false." "India is as important to Uber today as it was when we launched nine years ago. We are serving riders and drivers across more than 100 cities, hiring Indian talent aggressively, and planning for the next decade and beyond," the company spokesperson said. Uber competes with SoftBank-backed <keyword id="6354720" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ola" source="Orion">Ola</keyword> in the country. Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said in April that it will expand its product offerings and its team in India. "We continue to expand the product offerings for the Indian consumer. Whether it is autos, motos or high-capacity vehicles or rentals, India has always been a very big part of the Uber journey," he said during the Virtual i3 summit organised by Times Bridge. Uber aims to expand its engineering talent in India to more than 1,000 people from 700 at present, he had announced. Last month, <keyword id="2502101" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="uber-india" source="Orion">Uber India</keyword>'s Director of Central Operations, Nitish Bhushan, said that they are "always striving to make driving with Uber a viable and attractive option for drivers and the recent hike in fares will directly boost their earnings per trip". To remove frustration for riders and drivers alike, the company is also showing trip destinations to drivers before they decide to accept the ride. "Drivers at the Uber advisory council meeting told us they would like more flexibility around payments. We are now showing drivers the mode of payment (cash or online) before the trip starts," the company said. To make the cash or online decision irrelevant, the company has also introduced a daily pay process for drivers. With these changes, the company said that they are also reinforcing their service quality expectations with drivers, especially in areas like cancellation and ensuring AC rides. Bansal exited from Flipkart after its $16 billion acquisition by global retail giant Walmart in 2018. He sold his 5.5% stake for $1 billion. In a note that he released right after his exit from the company he had built for 10 years, Bansal had said that he would spend time on ‘pending projects, gaming and brushing up his coding skills’. While he made personal investments even while running Flipkart, he later founded a firm called BAC Acquisitions. Here's a look at all of his investments since his much-talked about exit from Flipkart. CRIDS Bansal picked up a majority stake in Bengaluru-based microfinance company Chaitanya Rural Intermediation Development Services (CRIDS). According to<a href="https://tech.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/startups/sachin-bansal-invests-rs-740-cr-in-chaitanya-rural-intermediation-development-services/71294091"> ET</a>, the former Flipkart CEO bought a 94% stake in the company. While he took over the role of CEO, Bansal in a statement called it, his ‘entry into financial services’. <keyword id="6354720" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ola">Ola</keyword> His first investment after Flipkart and also his biggest, was a $21 million investment into cab hailing unicorn Ola. Bansal’s investment fetched him 70,588 series J preferred shares at a price of ₹21, 250 per share. <keyword id="53189" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="boat">boAt</keyword> He also made an offbeat investment in audio brand boAt, via BAC Acquisitions. The brand which is known for its affordable speakers, received ₹20 crores as a part of venture debt. The three-year old boAt has already registered ₹100 crore revenue in FY'18 and is eyeing ₹500 crore in the next couple of years. Piramal Enterprises Bansal invested ₹200 crore in Piramal Enterprises’ debt, and subscribed to its non-convertible debentures (NCDs). <a href="https://www.livemint.com/companies/news/sachin-bansal-invests-200-cr-in-piramal-enterprises-debt-1563126810412.html">Piramal Enterprises</a> will infuse these new funds into its financial services sector. Ather Energy He has also invested in a Bengaluru-based electric bike startup, Ather Energy. While the amount invested is not known, he led the $51 million round. As an angel investor, Bansal earlier invested $0.5 million in the startup in 2014. The startup claims to be one of India’s first startups to manufacture electric vehicles. In June 2018, the startup’s first bike Ather 450 hit the market. Vogo and Bounce In April 2019, through his firm BAC Acquisitions, Bansal invested in scooter rental startups Vogo and Bounce. He Bansal had pumped in $3 million into each startup. Interestingly, Bansal’s other investment Ola had also pumped in a major $100 million into Vogo. With that, Vogo’s scooters are also listed on Ola for rental. Bounce is also backed by Sequoia Capital and Accel Partners. The <keyword id="48413" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ministry">Ministry</keyword> said that a total of 36,48,47,549 people have been vaccinated so far in the country, including 33,81,671 who were administered <keyword id="79555" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vaccines">vaccines</keyword> in the last 24 hours. According to the <keyword id="6364555" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Council-of-Medical-Research">Indian Council of Medical Research</keyword>, 42,52,25,897 samples have been tested up to July 7 for Covid-19. Of these 18,93,800 samples were tested on Wednesday. On July 6, India recorded 553 deaths -- lowest since April 6. This was after on May 23, India saw record fatalities with 4,454 deaths in 24 hours at the peak of the second wave. The first death in the country due to the pandemic was reported last March. India records over 45,800 new COVID-19 cases and 817 deaths in a day

In a bid to strengthen its core technology, India’s ride hailing app <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=ola&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Ola</a> hired <keyword id="4168815" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pranav-Tiwari">Pranav Tiwari</keyword> and <keyword id="4168816" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sanjay-Kharb">Sanjay Kharb</keyword> as Vice-Presidents engineering. 
 
The hiring comes after CFO <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=rajiv+bansal&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Rajiv Bansal</a> and <keyword id="3545539" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="cmo-raghuvesh-sarup">CMO Raghuvesh Sarup</keyword> quit the company. 
 
Tiwari, former CTO of Cellworks as well as an ex-Googler, will be working towards optimizing growth and profitability by bringing in necessary efficiencies in the supply chain function. 
 
Meanwhile, Kharb, who was earlier VP - Production Engineering at <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=inmobi&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">InMobi</a>, will strengthen efficiencies in <keyword id="6354720" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ola">Ola</keyword>’s technology infrastructure including site operability, compliance and data systems. 
 
“Ola has consistently invested in technology, consolidating supply chain and building a robust technological backbone, by bringing onboard, world class talent. They bring in relevant and significant experience with large technology businesses and they have an integral role to play in Ola’s aspirations to create innovative solutions that will efficiently solve for the diverse mobility needs of the country,” said CTO and Co-founder at Ola Ankit Bhati. 
 
The team will work closely with the supply chain team to help create a better experience for customers and driver partners alike, by building solutions that will effectively optimize use of vehicles on the platform, reduce deviations in routes, and improve matching of customer with drivers, among others. 
 
In last month, Ola has made significant appointments. Ola hired Dr Badri Raghavan as Chief Data Scientist, Vishal Kaul as Chief Operating Officer and Shalabh Seth as CEO of Ola Fleet Technologies.

Pallav Singh has been given the additional responsibility as interim CFO. 
 Also, <keyword id="6354720" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ola">Ola</keyword>'s chief marketing officer <keyword id="2237351" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Raghuvesh-Sarup">Raghuvesh Sarup</keyword> has also resigned and his replacement has not been decided yet. 
 Bansal, former <keyword id="6354512" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Infosys">Infosys</keyword> CFO, joined Ola one year back. His exit comes in the wake of ongoing rift between founders and board of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=infosys&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Infosys</a>.
