Ola group to invest ₹7,614 cr in TN for lithium ion cell, EV cars

SoftBank Group-backed <keyword id="4393078" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="ola-electric" source="Orion">Ola Electric</keyword> is in talks with multiple global suppliers to build a <keyword id="10272150" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="battery-cell-manufacturing" source="Orion">battery cell manufacturing</keyword> plant in India with a capacity of up to 50-gigawatt hours, sources said. As part of its broader electrification push, the firm plans to invest in companies with advanced cell and battery technology, alongside the 50 Gwh battery plant. <keyword id="6354720" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="ola" source="Orion">Ola</keyword> Electric needs 40 Gwh of battery capacity to power 10 million electric scooters annually. The remainder will be for its electric cars, which the company plans to manufacture in the future. Sources said the cell battery plant may cost around USD 1 billion (over Rs 7,700 crore) and may be built with an initial capacity of 1 Gwh, which will be expanded in the future. Over 40 global suppliers are already in Bengaluru to meet with Ola founder and CEO <keyword id="1543567" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="bhavish-aggarwal" source="Orion">Bhavish Aggarwal</keyword> at the company's headquarters and are also visiting the Ola Futurefactory in Krishnagiri, Tamil Nadu this week, sources aware of the matter said. Ola Electric, they said, has initiated talks with global suppliers from Germany, Korea, Japan and other hubs to fuel its battery manufacturing ambitions. It currently imports its battery cells from South Korea. Companies like Drr and Siemens also seem to be on the list of suppliers. The battery cell manufacturing sector is dominated by the likes of CATL, LG, Energy Solutions, and Panasonic, which supply to automakers such as Tesla and Volkswagen. Industry experts believe that one of the world's youngest EV companies is keen to begin cell manufacturing by next year. Aggarwal has already stated that India can soon replace China and emerge as the global hub for electric vehicles (EVs). Towards this end, Ola plans to develop the entire ecosystem -- cell and battery tech, global supply chains, interconnected as well as autonomous vehicle technologies. Ola Electric is the only Indian auto and EV company that has been selected by the government under its ambitious Rs 80,000 crore cell PLI scheme to set up an advanced cell manufacturing factory in 2 years. Its cell Production Linked Incentive (PLI) bid was for the maximum allowed bid capacity of 20 GWh. According to sources, Ola is also looking to set up an even larger 50 GWh gigafactory and a battery innovation centre to support its two-wheeler and four-wheeler roadmap for India and the world. Ola Electric is reportedly in talks with global suppliers to build a battery cell manufacturing unit in India

Saraswat, who joined SoftBank-backed <keyword id="6354720" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ola" source="Orion">Ola</keyword> last year, is set to join a company that is entering the battery business, reported The Economic Times, citing sources. When reached out, Ola Electric did not comment on the development. More than half a dozen senior executives have quit Ola Electric in recent months, as the Bhavish Aggarwal-run EV maker revealed plans to develop indigenous cells and batteries in the country. Last month, Ola Electric announced to invest $500 million for setting up its state of the art Battery Innovation Centre (BIC) in Bengaluru. The innovation centre will have capabilities to develop complete packages of battery pack design, fabrication and testing under one roof. The company had said that it will recruit top global talent including 500 PhDs and engineers who will be supported by an "additional 1,000 researchers in India and multiple other global centres". Ola recently unveiled its first Li-ion cell, saying it will begin the mass production of its cell from its upcoming Gigafactory by 2023. However, the resignations at the senior level at the company continue. Yashwant Kumar, Senior Director and Business Head for Charging Networks at the company, decided to move on last month. A B.Tech from the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay, Kumar joined Ola Electric in March last year. In June, Ola Electric's Director HR, Ranjit Kondeshan, decided to move on. Nidhi Chaturvedi Jha quit Ola Electric as regional head in May and joined Amazon. In April, chief marketing officer Varun Dubey left the company due to "personal reasons". Earlier, Dinesh Radhakrishnan, who was the chief technology officer (CTO) at Ola Electric, moved on from the company. According to his LinkedIn profile, he was appointed CTO at Ola Electric in May last year. Ola Electric’s head of battery unit Ashok Saraswat quits

New Delhi, <keyword id="4393078" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ola-Electric" source="Orion">Ola Electric</keyword> on Thursday said it has raised Rs 3,200 crore from Temasek-led investors and State Bank of India. The company announced the successful closure of the funding round from Temasek-led investors and State Bank of India. The funds raised would be utilised towards expansion of <keyword id="6354720" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ola" source="Orion">Ola</keyword>'s EV business and setting up India's first lithium-ion cell manufacturing facility at Krishnagiri, Tamil Nadu, the company said in a statement. The Bengaluru-based firm aims to accelerate its growth by ramping up its two-wheeler manufacturing capacity, launching electric motorcycles followed by electric cars and fast-tracking the construction of gigafactory, it added. "At Ola, our vision is to end ICE (internal combustion engine) age in automobiles and our upcoming gigafactory will be a big leap in India's journey towards becoming a global EV hub. We are committed towards developing core technologies in EVs and cell and are rapidly scaling up manufacturing to further accelerate the transition to sustainable mobility," Ola Electric Founder &amp; CEO Bhavish Aggarwal said. Ola Electric was selected by the government under its ambitious cell PLI scheme, receiving a maximum capacity of 20 GWh.

Ola shuts it used car and quick commerce businesses

In an interaction with PTI editors at the agency's headquarters here, he said the private sector has to do the bulk of job creation, step up and do more, while creating an enabling environment and correcting imbalances, such as that of trade, are the responsibility of the government. Aggarwal also supported the government's move to offer fiscal incentives to global EV makers, including Tesla, through the new EV policy saying it is important for India to attract all kinds of investment, and globally established players will help in the development of the EV ecosystem in the country. The group's newly-listed entity <keyword id="19945904" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ola" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Ola" meta.hostid="83" meta.entityid="Ola">Ola</keyword> Electric aims to make India a global electric vehicle (EV) hub but the country has to invent an EV and energy transition paradigm for itself based on its needs as the world cannot achieve a sustainable future without India, he added. "There is a global technology transition happening and AI is a very important technology of the future, and we in India need to lead this journey. If you look at the current state, I think we are still adopters of somebody else's technology paradigms, especially in the digital world," Aggarwal said, explaining why the Ola group had set up AI start-up Krutrim last year. One of the things in Krutrim is to build AI models on Indian data, which is more attuned to Indian use cases, Indian paradigms, he said, adding, "We are making our own AI, on our own cloud, on our own chip." Despite India producing 20 per cent of the world's digital data at present, he lamented that the country does not fully own the data, as 80 per cent are stored outside, which are then processed into AI and "brought back into India and sold to us in dollars". When asked about concerns over AI leading to job losses, he allayed the apprehension saying that the IT boom created jobs in India when people feared that computers would take away jobs, and AI is a similar tool. "AI is not going to replace anyone. Maybe that future is a few decades away... We don't need to get anxious about that future right now. We need to, as a country, see that AI is going to amplify productivity. If we don't get onto the bandwagon, we will be left behind...," he asserted. In his view, Aggarwal said the way forward is for India to become experts in future technology. "Future technologies bring with it jobs of the future, supply chain of the future. And if we are global leaders, we are the fastest adoptive market of future technologies (then) jobs of the future will be built in India, supply chains of the future will be built in India. This is the only way... If we focus on protecting the past, you remain uncompetitive," he added. Sharing his take on employment generation in India, Aggarwal said, "I actually believe the private sector has to do the bulk of the job creation. The government's job is to create the enabling environment, create the fundamentals, help correct imbalances wherever they are, be it trade imbalances, etc and incentivise wherever it needs to be incentivised, like the PLI schemes." The government's steps such as the employment-linked incentives will also encourage private industry, he said, adding "But fundamentally the private sector has to step up and do more". Asked if the government is doing enough to create that ecosystem for the private sector, Aggarwal said, "I'm not in the government, so I want to put the limelight on ourselves. Is the private sector doing enough? I think we all can do more, and I'm on the same page. We all need to do more." In response to a query on his views over the government in extending the fiscal concession that companies like Tesla have been demanding from India, he said, "It is very important for India to attract all kinds of investment, especially (from) world leading companies. "Tesla is a best in class company. The more companies like these invest into India, the better it is for India, in a broad sense as well for the industry." He further said, "The (EV) ecosystem, including my company, will benefit from it, because it will raise the bar on expertise, on excellence, on talent, everything..." About the newly-listed entity Ola Electric, he said, "Our mission at Ola electric is to really make India a global EV hub." The company will build products such as electric two and three-wheelers that Indians need for the country to be able to invent an EV and energy transition paradigm for itself, different from the current global solution for sustainability that is focussed on electric luxury cars, Aggarwal added. On Ola Consumer, he said the ride-hailing mobility vertical is fairly profitable, while it is investing into the new e-commerce for which it has partnered with ONDC.

The company denied sacking 500 employees, adding that it is "centralising operations and is undertaking a restructuring exercise to minimise redundancy and build a strong lateral structure that strengthens relevant roles and functions". CNBC first reported that nearly 500 employees are being laid off from the various software verticals of <keyword id="21936" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ani" source="Orion">ANI</keyword> technologies which operates as <keyword id="6362049" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ola-cabs" source="Orion">Ola Cabs</keyword>. "The company currently has around 2,000 engineers and aims to increase its engineering talent pool to 5,000 over the next 18 months," said the ride-hailing company. Earlier restructuring exercises impacted employees across product, marketing, sales, supply, tech, business, and operations verticals at the company, affecting nearly 500 employees that "were a result of restructuring in the Cars and Dash businesses". Ola’s expansion news comes as the company is reportedly going for an IPO soon. The rumours of a possible IPO turned strong after it raised fresh funding of ₹35.88 crores from Seoul-based ARK Ola pre-IPO Fund. Taking lessons from the <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword> episode, in which its major investor <keyword id="163404" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Softbank">SoftBank</keyword> took decision to sell-out the online marketplace, <keyword id="6354720" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ola">Ola</keyword>’s parent company modified regulatory terms and gave more powers to the owners. <keyword id="4545821" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ani-technologies-private-limited">ANI Technologies Private Limited</keyword>, which owns and operates India’s top ride-hailing app Ola, amended the Articles of Association and modified some of the regulatory terms to give greater control to Ola founders Bhavish Aggarwal and Ankit Bhati. As per the revised terms, SoftBank, which is Ola’s biggest stakeholder, and its affiliates need approval from Aggarwal, Bhati and company's board to purchase any additional shares of the company from other stakeholders. SoftBank will own over 30% stake in Ola after the last financing round. "The measures are aimed at giving the founders more power, even as they continue to dilute their shareholding to (access more capital) and take on Uber,” a banker who tracks the company closely told ET. Aggarwal and Bhati will also be issued additional shares in Ola to ensure their holding does not fall below 10.9% from the current 12.01%. ET reported they may get an additional four lakh shares, which will be worth Rs 520 crore. This move comes after SoftBank initiated talks of Snapdeal’s sellout to <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword>, which reflects concerns of deep-pocketed investors taking major decisions. Snapdeal's CEO Kunal Bahl, in an email to employees in April, wrote that "our investors are driving the discussions around the way forward, for the company. Ola raised $250 million from SoftBank at a valuation of around $3 billion in November 2016. During the negotiation for the round, SoftBank had offered to invest close to $1 billion in Ola which would have given it a controlling stake in Ola, one source told ET. "But Aggarwal decided to take less money from SoftBank and raise more capital from other investors, both existing and new,” ET quoted sources.
