Tata Motors and Uber sign MoU to induct 25,000 XPRES-T electric cars

<ul><li><keyword id="205081" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Meru">Meru</keyword> alleged that <keyword id="1042120" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uber">Uber</keyword> had adopted certain abusive practices to oust its competitors from the market. </li><li><keyword id="47183" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="CCI">CCI</keyword> has observed that Uber is not in the dominant position as Ola too has a strong presence here. </li><li>Meru had previously alleged that Ola was the dominant player, which CCI had closed as Uber was a “stronger player”.</li></ul>India’s antitrust watchdog the <keyword id="97393" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Competition-Commission-of-India">Competition Commission of India</keyword> (CCI) has rejected radio taxi service Meru’s plea alleging that cab hailing app Uber abused its dominant position in the Indian ride hailing market. Meru had alleged that US-based Uber, owing to its dominant position, had adopted certain abusive practices to oust its competitors from the market. These practices included offering unreasonable discounts to the customers leading to low/predatory prices, employing incentive policies that were not economically justified. Meru noted that these incentive policies were aimed at exclusively engaging the drivers to its network so as to exclude its competitors from having access to such drivers. CCI, in its order dated July 14, 2021, has observed that Uber is not in the dominant position in the Indian ride hailing segment, as Bengaluru-based Ola too exists in the market. Back in 2015, Meru had alleged that Ola was the dominant player in the market, which CCI had closed as Uber was a “stronger player”. “And in the facts of that case [Meru’s plea against Ola in 2015], the <keyword id="6355822" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="commission">Commission</keyword> was of the view that despite Ola having the largest network, the network effects were not strong enough to deter entry and rapid expansion of another big competitor ‘Uber’ who was competing fiercely with Ola in the relevant market of ‘radio taxi services in <keyword id="6354321" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bengaluru">Bengaluru</keyword>’,” CCI said, in its notice of July 14. The director general (DG) was looking into Meru’s plea against Uber’s dominance in the Indian market and has given a similar finding (submitted in February 2020). Though Meru has said this finding is contradictory to the earlier order on Ola, but CCI has found no such infirmity. The DG has found traces of predatory pricing structure in the case of Uber as evident through its losses between 2014-2018. However, it has also found similar trends in the case of both Ola and Meru. “This shows that the aggressive pricing strategy adopted by Uber was in order to compete aggressively for the market (just like its closest competitor Ola) and to build its network,” CCI has maintained. The investigation also revealed that the discounts and incentives have gradually declined over time with a positive per trip margin recorded by Uber since October 2017. The foundation will provide employment-linked skills training, financial literacy and social empowerment through life-skills education. “Our pilot programmes have demonstrated that financial and social independence for women can bring about a significant improvement in the well-being of their families,” said Srinivas Chunduru, Mentor at Ola Foundation and group CHRO. The Ola foundation, which was formed in 2016, is hoping to train women in textile production and printing, in addition to financial and digital literacy programmes, health awareness, and vocational skills. To launch this initiative, Ola conducted multiple researches, which includes talking to the spouses of its driver partners in Bengaluru. It has also partnered with Gram Tarang for social empowerment and life skills training with a 60-hour interactive programme.

New Delhi, Apr 13 () Ride-hailing major Ola on Monday said it has partnered with Haryana government to launch 'Ola Emergency' on its app in Gurugram to enable essential medical trips.The launch in Gurugram comes closely after Bengaluru, Vizag, Bhubaneshwar, Nashik and Varanasi. The company plans to expand the service to other major cities soon. The service allows riders to book non-COVID-19 medical trips, which do not require ambulance.With the implementation of the lockdown across the country to contain the spread of COVID-19, the government has allowed only people in essential services like healthcare, banking and media to commute."Ola Emergency is available in Gurugram starting today with a dedicated network of cars that are equipped with masks and sanitizers and will be operated by specially trained drivers. Over 100 hospitals have been mapped on to the app to provide the service to ensure that trips are made from homes to hospitals and vice-versa," Ola said in a statement.To book an 'Ola Emergency' cab, users can select the 'Ola Emergency' category and enter the drop location from a list of available hospitals in the city."Trips to hospitals for medical urgencies are unavoidable, even in the current times. With Ola Emergency, we are able to facilitate trips to and from hospitals across the city through the Ola app," an Ola spokesperson said.The service will be available 24x7 and will provide citizens with a reliable, convenient and safe transport solution for medical trips that do not require an ambulance, the spokesperson added.Ola said it is facilitating a clean and safe ride experience by ensuring that all registered driver-partners on the network are trained to follow proper sanitary measures, including wearing masks and frequent usage of hand sanitizers that cars have been equipped with."We will continue to work closely with various state governments to ensure that people across cities can avail this service to access essential medical care," the spokesperson said.Customers will be charged a nominal fare according to the rate card to compensate driver-partners for their services, Ola said. COVID-19: Ola launches emergency cab service for essential medical trips in Gurugram

Ride-hailing major Uber on Monday said it has set up its second centre of excellence (CoE) in <keyword id="60510" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Visakhapatnam">Visakhapatnam</keyword> and will hire about 500 people for the facility by the end of next year. The US-based company which is locked in an intense battle with Bengaluru-headquartered Ola for market leadership in <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> already operates a CoE in Hyderabad. "The Visakhapatnam CoE is an extension of our Hyderabad centre to ensure business continuity...it will provide specialised customer support for critical incidents that require immediate attention for both riders and our driver partners," Uber Senior Director, Community Operations for Asia Pacific, Wen-Szu Lin told .
 He added that the centre will support customers in India as well as APAC (Asia-Pacific) region.
 Set up at a cost of USD 800,000 (about Rs 5.73 crore), the new centre will create about 500 new jobs. The trained teams will respond to any urgent issue or incident that is reported to the company and will operate 24/7.
 "We have already hired 70 people and this number will go up to 120 by early next year. We expect to have about 500 people by the end of next year," he said.
 Lin added that the launch of the second centre in India is a reiteration of the company's commitment to the Indian market.
 "Through the new CoE, we plan to expand our global customer support footprint as well as aim to create new economic opportunities for the high caliber talent in this country," he said.
 Uber had launched its first India centre in Hyderabad in 2015, and now has a little over 1,000 employees providing critical regional and global customer support services to Uber riders, drivers, Eats customers, couriers, and restaurant partners.
 The Visakhapatnam facility is the 12th such centre globally for the company. Uber has two CoEs in the US in Chicago and Phoenix, and four in the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region in Limerick (Ireland), Lisbon (Portugal), Cairo (Egypt), and Krakow (Poland).

After making inroads into e-mobility, it is now launching a self-drive service. Ola is set to start its self-drive service by pumping in $500 million, a source told Business Insider. Confirming the news, an Ola spokesperson told Business Insider, “Basis market feedback, we are piloting our Ola Self-Drive offering in various formats like rentals, subscription and corporate leasing in select cities in the coming weeks. This space is currently underserved and there exists a tremendous opportunity to build a superior experience through an integrated mobility platform like Ola.” The self-drive car rental service will put Ola in direct competition with Zoomcar and Drivezy, while pushing forward Ola’s existing fleet business. Ola Fleet Technologies Pvt Ltd also looks into asset optimization and management. Ola is planning to take this launch to its top seven cities – Bengaluru, Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune and Kolkata – with over 10,000 vehicles including luxury sedans and SUVs under the Ola Self-drive category. The company is taking this self-drive category to Ola’s 150 million+ consumers in the country will make it the largest self drive business in India, the source added. Ola will race Zoomcar in self-drive car rentals with a $500 million bet
