<ul><li>London’s transport regulator has revoked the license of <keyword id="6354720" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ola">Ola</keyword> over ‘safety concerns’ and told the Indian ride-hailing app “that it was not fit and proper to hold a private hire operator's license”.</li><li>Ola now has 21 days to appeal the decision of the authorities.</li><li>Ola has said it will appeal the decision and will continue to function in London.</li><li>Meanwhile, its rival <keyword id="1042120" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uber">Uber</keyword> had recently won a historic court case to get back its license. </li></ul>When Ola rode into London in 2019, it did so when Uber’s license had just been revoked by the Transport for London (TfL) authorities. Cut to 2020, just as Ola was getting ready to celebrate its first anniversary in London, its license has been revoked, whereas Uber recently <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/thelife/news/uber-secures-its-london-future-after-winning-a-court-battle-with-the-citys-transport-body/articleshow/78362656.cms">won a historic court </a>case to get back its license. According to a <a href="https://news.sky.com/story/tfl-bans-uber-rival-ola-over-public-safety-failings-12090283">SkyNews report</a>, TfL has banned Ola over ‘safety concerns,’ and the Indian ride-hailing app was told: “that it was not fit and proper to hold a private hire operator's licence”. The report also said that Ola’s failings included several breaches, resulting in unlicensed drivers and vehicles taking over 1,000 trips on the platform. Ola now has 21 days to appeal against the decision of the authorities. “At Ola, our core principle is to work closely, collaboratively and transparently with regulators such as TfL. We have been working with TfL during the review period and have sought to provide assurances and address the issues raised in an open and transparent manner. Ola will take the opportunity to appeal this decision and in doing so, our riders and drivers can rest assured that we will continue to operate as normal, providing safe and reliable mobility for London,” said Marc Rozendal, Managing Director, Ola UK. This development comes as Ola was also <a href="https://thetechportal.com/2020/09/11/ola-faces-trouble-in-netherlands-as-drivers-file-suit-over-data-access-rights/">reportedly</a> facing issues in London after two drivers filed a lawsuit against the ride-hailing giant. Ola's license revoked by London transport authorities over safety concerns – Indian ride-hailing app says it will appeal the decision

"Deeply concerning that #India has blocked the flow of information to Indian Twitter by withholding access to the following official accounts," Geo News quoted the Ministry as saying in a tweet on Monday night, while listing down the banned accounts. The banned accounts include accounts of the Pakistani Embassy in UN, Turkey, Iran and Egypt. "Diminishing space for plurality of voices &amp; access to info in India is extremely alarming," the tweet added. The Ministry called out Twitter, saying that social media platforms should abide by the applicable international norms. It said that the government of Pakistan is urging the tech company to restore access to the restricted accounts immediately and ensure adherence to democratic freedoms of speech and expression. Meanwhile, the Twitter handles of journalists, including The News and Geo News reporter in London, <keyword id="14309060" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="murtaza-ali-shah" source="Orion">Murtaza Ali Shah</keyword> and CJ Werleman have also been withheld by the company under India's Information Technology Act, 2000, Geo News reported. Murtaza Ali Shah has around 550,000 followers on his verified Twitter @MurtazaViews account. He has been associated with The News and Geo for more than 17 years. Shah confirmed he received an email notice from Twitter about India's legal action against his account. Following a series of scandals in 2017, Uber has tried to clean up its act - but not enough to placate TfL and the very powerful taxi lobby of black-cab drivers who have lost market share to the upstart.The strength of this lobby may have a lot to do with the decision, but the failings in London could just easily be seen elsewhere.Shares printed -5.9% in pre-market trading at $27.82, although the stock opened down about 4% at $28.46, barely a couple of dollars above its all-time low. Following the initial selloff the shares rallied to within 0.7% of Friday's closing price.<h2>Largest market in Europe </h2>Uber has clearly suffered a big blow with this ruling. There is an immediate top-line hit: London, with about 3.5 million users, is the largest market in Europe for the ride-hailing app.London is also one of the group's "fab five" cities - along with New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Sau Paulo - that account for around a quarter of global revenues. In that sense, there is likely to be a clear and obvious hit to earnings growth, if the ruling is upheld, which looks likely.As Uber says itself: "Any inability to operate in London, as well as the publicity concerning any such termination or non-renewal, would adversely affect our business, revenue, and operating results."In London, competition in the shape of Bolt and Ola are ready and willing to step in at the drop of a hat; Uber could be forgotten pretty quickly once gone. Local competition is a problem wherever Uber extends its reach.More broadly, the decision today betrays the scope and depth of the legal and regulatory problems faced by Uber. The list of legal issues either historic or ongoing is long and broad both in scope and geography.<h2>Cities and local lawmakers have leverage</h2>These present ongoing overhang for the stock. Whilst there have been problems with corporate culture and the vetting of drivers, by-and-large the run-ins with the regulators and policymakers pertain to the very structure of the business itself. Taxation, labour laws, and consumer safety are the three legs on the milking stool of regulatory instability.Cities and local lawmakers have considerable leverage should they wish to use it. Uber will continue to face elevated competition from local rivals and a high degree of regulatory scrutiny that threatens to undermine how it does business.From Chicago to Los Angeles, New York to San Francisco, there have been all kinds of legal roadblocks. City authorities have been alarmed at the rise of Uber and have pursued a range of legal and regulatory avenues to stymie the company. An outright ban though has not been considered in other major cities, but how long before some follow?Already in a number of key markets, including Argentina, Germany, Italy, Japan, South Korea, and Spain, the company's ridesharing business model has been blocked, capped, or suspended, or Uber has been required to change its business model.Whilst Uber investors have been able to accept some degree of regulatory overhang, London's example could point the way to cities taking an even tougher stance.Quite simply, if Uber is barred from a couple more big cities there is a risk it won't be able to maintain the kind of critical mass required to attract the capital needed to sustain a loss-making enterprise of this scale. Uber remains good at attracting investors, but a couple more cases like this and it may not be.<h2>Uber's cash pile is a small mercy </h2>Uber has about $12.7 billion in cash on hand, and could sustain its burn-rate for perhaps two or three years. That's a small mercy, if long-term sentiment crumbles.At least the London decision does do one thing in Uber's favour - it will help it reduce the cash burn, a strategy that management has tentatively started to favour as it contends with greater investor scrutiny after going public. Uber's problems in London could be just the start - and investors might not stick around

Though the strike is primarily affecting commuters in Mumbai, there have been some instances of cab unavailability in Delhi and Bangalore too. In Mumbai, almost <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/startups/newsbuzz/uber-ola-drivers-on-strike-heres-the-impact-on-different-cities/articleshow/63361106.cms">60,000 cabs are reportedly off the roads</a> in the city today leaving most commuters stranded. We spoke to a couple of drivers in Delhi who seemed to be blissfully unaware of the strike and claim they are happy and have 'no problem' with the company. Uber itself says that only Mumbai and Pune have been affected by the strikes and it’s business as usual in other cities. In a statement to the press, an Uber spokesperson said: We regret the disruption caused to our rider and driver community by a small group of individuals. We remain committed to serving the city, ensuring driver partners can continue to access stable earning opportunities, while giving riders a convenient option to get around their city. The Hon’ble Bombay High Court issued an injunction prohibiting unions, their leaders and anybody else from obstructing the activities of Uber driver partners. We welcome this, and hope that it will enable drivers to stay behind the wheel, something many have been telling us they wish to do. We have been listening to our driver partners all along and are committed to ensuring that Uber remains an attractive entrepreneurial opportunity for them. While the authorities have taken steps to ensure minimal disruption to our rider and driver communities, we hope that they will continue to enforce the order passed by the High Court. However, it's no secret that disgruntled cab drivers who bought in on the rosy picture painted by Uber and Ola, promising a lucrative career and a chance to squeeze into the middle class have today realised that it was nothing but a pipe dream. Initially promised earnings over a lakh per month, people from various walks of lives decided to give up their full-time jobs and even land to cash-in on this. However, today these drivers are finding it difficult to scrounge up enough money to pay up the loans taken to buy their cars. But this isn’t the first time we’ve heard this story. Drivers in India have been complaining about reduced incentives and overall earnings from Uber and Ola for a while now. The companies initially offered huge overhead payouts to them, but now takes approximately 25% cut from each of their trips. While both companies still do have some incentives in place, drivers say they are more difficult to achieve and working for Uber and Ola isn’t the “joyride” it once used to be. Examples overseas... When strikes against Uber first broke out in London back in 2016, Uber’s impact on Black Cab drivers’ income was one of the cornerstones of the movement. “Unite, the union that represents many black-cab drivers, claims the government is biased against their trade and claims light-touch regulation will threaten passenger safety as well as drivers’ incomes,” <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2016/feb/10/black-cab-drivers-uber-protest-london-traffic-standstill">the Guardian</a> wrote at the time. These strikes have become somewhat commonplace and except for one big win for Uber drivers in the UK in November last year, the results, for the drivers at least, have always been wanting. In the UK, a panel ruled that <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/world/2017/11/10/british-panels-rules-uber-drivers-employees-not-contractors/851388001/">Uber drivers are employees and not contractors</a>, and therefore entitled to basic protections such as minimum wage and vacation pay. In September last year, Uber was <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2017/sep/22/uber-licence-transport-for-london-tfl">denied the licence to operate by Transport for London</a> (TfL) claiming that the company was not a “fit and proper” operator. Uber’s failure to report ‘serious criminal offences, obtaining medical certificates and driver background checks’ was the main reason behind this decision. This move affected the 40,000 people who worked for Uber, not to mention its 3.5 million users. In 2015, local <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/jul/24/rio-de-janeiro-uber-protest-taxis">cab drivers in Rio de Janeiro protested against Uber</a> because they claimed they were the “official” drivers who were strictly regulated and fewer overhead costs gave them a ‘competitive advantage’. In 2016, Uber decided to cease operations in Austin, Texas because it didn’t find it feasible to comply with the regulation to fingerprint and run thorough background checks on all its drivers. In 2014, both Berlin and Hamburg, Germany voted to ban Uber because it did not <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2014/aug/14/uber-taxi-service-banned-berlin-safety-grounds">‘do enough to protect its passengers from unlicensed drivers’</a>. The common thread of grievance is a predictable trio -- local taxi operators revolting against Uber’s competitive advantage, security concerns based on Uber’s slack regulation over the choice of drivers with regards to proper background checks, and unethical treatment of drivers. All of these complaints have been cited in India as well, but this is the second time such protests have sprung in as many years. Last year, the Sarvodaya Driver Association of Delhi (SDAD) called for a strike in Delhi against Uber and Ola on similar grounds, though the companies escaped unscathed at the time. Taking cues... The current strike in India hopes to achieve similar results. “This time things will be different because they have partnered with us,” says <keyword id="165480" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sanjay-Naik">Sanjay Naik</keyword>, president of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena's (MNVS) transport wing. He believes that the <a href="http://indianexpress.com/article/india/maharashtra-taxi-rules-discriminates-between-black-and-yellow-cabs-and-app-based-taxi-services-bombay-hc-4780461/">privileges that are mandated by law to the Mumbai Kaali Peeli’ (black-and-yellow) taxi drivers</a> should also be applicable to Ola and Uber cabs so that all drivers can benefit from them. He wants the implementation of the <a href="https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/news/national/some-relief-for-cab-taxi-operators-in-maharashtra/article9921977.ece">BC Khatua Committee’s proposal</a> that includes ‘relaxation of several provisions of the Maharashtra City Taxi Scheme, including lowering the permit fees for all types of cars to a flat ₹10,000 instead of a graded system ranging from ₹75,000 to ₹2.6 lakh under the City Taxi rules.’ He also accused the companies of giving preference to cabs owned by the companies instead of driver-owned cabs. In India, Uber offers to buy cabs that are then passed on to drivers. Drivers effectively work off their debt to the company, by paying a monthly instalment to them. What Naik is insinuating is that Uber gives these drivers more rides than those who register their own cars on the service. What is most interesting, however, is that MNVS hasn’t ruled out going into business for themselves. Naik told us that if things don’t work out, they will consider bringing all the drivers together under one umbrella and take out the middlemen (Ola and Uber). However, for now, the organisation has reached out to the police to get the ‘decision makers’ from these companies to meet them and the government, in order to come to an amicable decision that will not only benefit the drivers monetarily but also implement regulations so that all drivers come under the same law and benefit from it. With the predictable spate of grievances by Uber drivers, commuters and local taxi operators, will Maharashtra take a cue from international events and tighten the leash on the private taxi operators? If it does, will that, in turn, set the precedent for the rest of the country? UPDATE: Ola shared the statement below with us today. “Interest of our driver partners and customer convenience is of paramount importance to us. While, we have seen a slight improvement in our services in Mumbai, however for the situation to improve significantly it is imperative that intimidation of driver partners and vandalism of their cars by vested interests be stopped. New economy companies like us are counting on the police for normalcy to return.”

Indian drivers may finally be taking cues from global movements against on-demand cab services

In November, London's transport regulator Transport for London (TfL) refused to renew the ride-hailing firm's license, highlighting a "pattern of failures" on safety and security. In some 14,000 cases, it said, Uber drivers had completed trips using an incorrect profile picture.<h2>What happens if Uber leaves London?</h2>Appealing the decision has kept Uber on the road for now, with an as-yet-to-be-determined court date set to resolve the matter once and for all - but when and if Uber is kicked out of London, what happens next? Today, the Silicon Valley startup still dominates the London market, with around 45,000 drivers and millions of users. But competitors have been mobilizing, both to ensure they're best placed to lure new drivers onto their platform and to scoop up Uber's customer base. Competitors capitalized on Uber's troubles. French competitor Kapten, which launched in London in 2019, said in a statement: "London needs ride-hailing, but doesn't need Uber." It added: "We believe it is the duty of a responsible ride-hailing operator to work cooperatively with regulators." Around the same time another opponent, Bolt, sent its customers an email, claiming news of Uber's woes had brought in "thousands of new sign-ups already". Catty putdowns aside, it's clear the ride-hailing firms are eyeing the potential gap in the market. But with that opportunity comes risk: On the surface, none of these companies offer a discernibly different service to Uber, and will be subject to the same regulatory pressures. In an Uber blog post, Kalanick said:

The woman says her driver sexually assaulted and beat her before warning her not to contact authorities. Uber gave police information about his license, address, vehicle, and details about the woman's trip. 
The 32-year-old driver, Shiv Kumar Yadav, was arrested Sunday morning at home, <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/dec/07/indian-police-uber-driver-rape">100 miles from Delhi</a>. He is scheduled to appear in court today, AFP <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/r-indian-uber-driver-accused-of-rape-previously-arrested-for-assault-2014-12">reports</a>. 
Yadav was previously arrested for sexual assault and was acquitted, but he was still allowed to drive for Uber.
Kalanick, according to The Deccan Chronicle, has said India's systems don't have a process "<a href="https://twitter.com/DeccanChronicle/status/541878412579573760">to establish clear background checks</a>." 
Delhi's government <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/afp-delhi-city-government-bans-uber-after-alleged-rape-2014-12">said in a statement</a> that the "Transport Department has banned all activities relating to providing any transport service by the www.Uber.com with immediate effect." According to the AFP, Delhi's city government <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/afp-delhi-city-government-bans-uber-after-alleged-rape-2014-12#ixzz3LJdSZJcf">has banned Uber in the wake of this weekend's rape allegation</a>. 
"(The) Transport Department has banned all activities relating to providing any transport service by the www.Uber.com with immediate effect," the government said in a statement. 
Uber, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/uber-just-raised-12-billion-2014-12">which just raised $1.2 billion at a $41 billion valuation</a>, launched in India in 2013. Uber's primary competition in India is Ola Cabs, which operates in 19 cities and <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2014/10/27/olacabs-softbank-india/">has raised about $277 million</a>.

For every outlandish concept vehicle, like the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/mercedes-benz">Mercedes-Benz</a> <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mercedes-benz-vision-avtr-concept-car-no-steering-wheel-avatar-2020-1">Vision AVTR sedan</a>, which was inspired by the film "Avatar," there was a vehicle scheduled for production, or one that looked ready for it, like the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/nissan">Nissan</a> Ariya Concept, an electric SUV that was placed at the center of the automaker's booth. While labeled as a concept vehicle, the Ariya's styling wouldn't look out of place on the road today, and Nissan plans to release a production version next year. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/ford">Ford</a>, which at CES in 2018 <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ford-makes-push-catch-up-autonomous-vehicles-2018-1">outlined a vision</a> for connecting vehicles, pedestrians, and infrastructure while shying away from specific timelines, focused this year on its Mustang Mach-E electric SUV. The Mach-E will hit dealerships at the end of the year.Even at an event dedicated to the Vision AVTR, there was a connection to immediate, real-world concerns. It will also require a thoughtful approach to how those technologies interact with the world around them.Uber has clashed with some cities it entered without warning, leaving the ride-hailing service banned in <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/uber-lost-london-license-may-get-worse-warning-to-investors-neil-wilson-1028715607">London</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/german-court-bans-uber-services-via-rental-cars-in-germany-2019-12">Germany</a>, while complaints about the hazards of electric scooters that were quickly dropped in cities by startups like Bird and Lime have led some local governments to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/san-francisco-ban-shared-dockless-scooters-2018-5">cap</a> the number allowed in their jurisdictions.Both cases have shown that the "move fast and break things" ethos embraced by Silicon Valley startups can invite unintended consequences that pose moral and logistical challenges."The investment in going into a city is tremendous," said John Rich, the COO of Ford Autonomous Vehicles LLC. "We can't have an adversarial relationship. We have to be solving their problems. We have to be invited in."No automaker at CES split the difference between idealism and realism more than <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/toyota">Toyota</a>, which put at the center of its display a smart-city prototype it will build in Japan. Called the Woven City, the prototype will serve as a testing ground for a number of technologies, including self-driving cars, robots, and smart homes, creating an opportunity to see how they work together. While renderings of the Woven City have a science-fiction sheen to them, the project will focus as much on urban design and renewable energy as it does on high-tech gadgets."Peope have to be at the center of anything that Toyota does," said James Kuffner, the chief technology officer of the Toyota Research Institute. Daniel Kirchert, CEO of the electric-vehicle startup <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/byton">Byton</a>, whose debut vehicle, the M-Byte SUV, will have the auto industry's largest <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/byton-exec-explains-why-48-inch-screen-wont-distract-drivers-2019-2">dashboard screen</a>, said the company does not want to reinvent every part of the automotive business. Instead, it will focus on innovating in areas where it believes it has an edge."We should not believe that we can do too many things," Kirchert said. "We need to stay very focused."In an apparent reference to Tesla, which struggled mightily when it tried to automate much of its vehicle-assembly process in 2017, Kirchert said Byton would not follow a similar path, instead attempting to implement the auto industry's best practices for manufacturing.Ultimately, a shift away from speculation and toward implementation could bode well for the auto industry's seemingly inevitable transition to electric and self-driving vehicles.
