Ola likely to lay off nearly 1K employees to ramp up EV plans

Bloomberg reported that the US-based company explored selling the India business, but "suspended discussions after tech startup valuations cratered." In a statement shared with IANS, an Uber spokesperson said the company never explored exiting India -- not even for a minute -- and the report is "categorically false." "India is as important to Uber today as it was when we launched nine years ago. We are serving riders and drivers across more than 100 cities, hiring Indian talent aggressively, and planning for the next decade and beyond," the company spokesperson said. Uber competes with SoftBank-backed <keyword id="6354720" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ola" source="Orion">Ola</keyword> in the country. Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said in April that it will expand its product offerings and its team in India. "We continue to expand the product offerings for the Indian consumer. The company recently rolled out the<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5wRaJniBnwc%5d"> Move OS 3</a> update, introducing several new features and bringing hyper charging support to its scooters. The Move OS 3 is the company’s latest software update to the operating system that powers the company’s electric scooters. It comes with several new features and improvements, including crucial ones like support for Ola’s hyper charger network, multiple profiles, Bluetooth calling, sound customizations which the company calls ‘Moods’, and more. I have been using the Ola S1 Pro with the latest Move OS 3 for a few weeks now and here is my review of the newly introduced features. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Hypercharge support" comment="subhead" text="Hypercharge support">Hypercharge support</cmsannotation> One of the highlights of the Move OS 3 update is the introduction of hypercharging. We tested the hypercharger in Hyderabad and found that the charging is close to the company's claims. We did notice that the charging gets a little slower as the battery crosses 70%. The introduction of hyperchargers is a good move as it helps in reducing range anxiety, and you don’t have to worry about running out of juice. The company currently has over 200 experience centers across the country, a lot of which have hyperchargers installed. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Moods" comment="subhead" text="Moods">Moods</cmsannotation> <div type="image" title="Eclipse" msid="97806573" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;The original Eclipse theme&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> Ola has added themes to it, which the company has dubbed “Moods.” The original theme has been named “Eclipse.” <div type="image" title="IMG_20230208_192121" msid="97806586" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;The retro Vintage theme&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> In addition to this, the company now offers “Bolt”, which has a modern and futuristic look to it, and “Vintage”, which as the name suggests gives it a retro look. Basically, this allows your smartphone to act as a key and the scooter is unlocked whenever you come close to it, allowing you to ride it without having to unlock it yourself. Similarly, the scooter is locked when you move away from it. In my experience, there were some issues initially with proximity unlock as sometimes the scooter failed to unlock. While the scooter now locks and unlocks as I come near it or move away from it, there were a few instances when it took some time. The feature is still in Beta so we expect the feature to become better once the company finishes the beta. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Hill hold" comment="subhead" text="Hill hold">Hill hold</cmsannotation> <div type="image" title="IMG_20230208_191821" msid="97806657" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Hill hold works for a small duration&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> The Ola S1 Pro has finally received hill-hold support. This is useful when you have stopped your vehicle on an incline. The feature is still in Beta so we expect it to improve once a stable version is rolled out. During my testing, I found that the feature does not always work, and even when it does, it works only for a few seconds. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Profiles" comment="subhead" text="Profiles">Profiles</cmsannotation> As the Ola S1 Pro does not come with a physical key, you may not want to share your passcode or login details with everyone. If you wish to lend your scooter to someone temporarily, you can use the new profiles feature added by the company. It allows you to share access to the scooter with others; all you have to do is enter their name and phone number. The app gives them their passcode, allowing them to unlock the scooter easily. You can revoke access to others’ right from the app. In my experience, the feature works well, and setting up a new rider takes less than a minute. Overall, Move OS 3 has introduced some good features which improve the user experience. Features like proximity unlock and hill hold need to be improved a bit to make them more useful. <ul><li>The Indian Federation of App-based Transport workers (IFAT) have filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking social security benefits.</li><li>They demanded that gig workers should be considered as “unorganised workers”, which will make their employers liable to pay them certain benefits.</li><li>The lack of employment contracts between gig workers and new age platforms does not mean there is no employer-employee relationship, the petition read.</li></ul>Some of India’s gig workers — associated with new age firms like Uber, Ola, Zomato and Swiggy — are seeking government intervention to help them overcome the impact of the pandemic and make their employers pay for it. The Indian Federation of App-based Transport workers (IFAT) filed a public interest litigation (PIL) in the Supreme Court two days ago, seeking their inclusion as “unorganised workers” or “wage workers” within the Unorganised Workers Social Welfare Security Act, 2008. The association, in collaboration with concerned individuals and organisations, noted that the denial of social security to gig workers and “platform workers’ has resulted in their exploitation through forced labour. The transport gig workers, in the petition accessed by Business Insider, noted that the failure to register them as unorganised workers or provide them with social security is violating their right to life and personal liberty as well as right to equality. They also added that app-based companies — Zomato, Swiggy, Uber, Ola and others — currently claim that they are in partnership with gig workers, therefore there is no contract of employment between the two parties. Hence, they want their hands off any responsibility or accountability over the lives and livelihood of the contractual workers associated with them. “The mere fact that their employers call themselves “aggregators” and enter into the so-called “partnership agreements” does not take away the fact that there exists a jural relationship of employer and employee; master and servant and worker within the meaning of all applicable laws,” the petition read. IFAT added that the contracts were made in a way to disguise the nature of the relations between the gig workers and these apps. They also cited a recent Supreme Court ruling in the United Kingdom, which <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/uber-reclassify-uk-drivers-minimum-wage-benefits-supreme-court-defeat-2021-3">stated</a> that Uber Drivers are in fact workers in the company and are entitled to certain benefits. The workers’ association added that the transport gig workers in India are struggling with decreasing income, increasing fuel prices, immense pressure from loan recovery agents as well as state officials, who too are trying to make a living in this pandemic. New Delhi, April 7 (IANS) In a bid to protect users from installing outdated apps which can put their data at risk, <keyword id="6355629" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="google" source="Orion">Google</keyword> has announced to block and hide apps on <keyword id="1470391" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="play-store" source="Orion">Play Store</keyword> that have not kept up with latest <keyword id="6355645" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="android" source="Orion">Android</keyword> operating system (OS) updates. Starting November 1 this year, existing apps that don't target an API level within two years of the latest major Android release version will not be available for discovery or installation for new users with devices running Android OS versions higher than apps' target API level. "As new Android OS versions launch in the future, the requirement window will adjust accordingly," said <keyword id="7854348" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="krish-vitaldevara" source="Orion">Krish Vitaldevara</keyword>, Director, <keyword id="216550" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="product-management" source="Orion">Product Management</keyword>. As part of Google Play's latest policy updates, the company is taking additional steps to protect users from installing apps that may not have the latest privacy and security features by expanding its target level API requirements. Google currently requires new apps and app updates to target an Android API level within one year of the latest major Android OS version release. New apps and app updates that don't meet this requirement cannot be published on Google Play. Users with the latest devices or those who are fully caught up on Android updates expect to realise the full potential of all the privacy and security protections Android has to offer. "Expanding our target level API requirements will protect users from installing older apps that may not have these protections in place," said Google. According to the company, a vast majority of apps on Google Play already abide by these standards. Google said it is notifying developers in advance and providing resources for those who need them.
