In yet another EV fire incident, an <keyword id="6077703" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="okinawa-autotech" source="Orion">Okinawa autotech</keyword> dealership burnt down to ashes in Tamil Nadu owing to a reported fire in an e-scooter belonging to the company. Electric two-wheeler manufacturer <keyword id="143042" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="okinawa" source="Orion">Okinawa</keyword> had recalled 3,215 units of its 'Praise Pro' scooters on April 16, just before the dealership was engulfed in flames in Tamil Nadu The EV maker was yet to make a statement on the latest EV fire at its dealership. No casualties were reported and the fire was put out with the help of locals but the entire showroom was gutted. This was the sixth EV fire incident since the onset of summer this year. While recalling 'Praise Pro' e-scooters, Okinawa Autotech had said that this voluntary campaign is "in the wake of the recent thermal incident and in line with the company's long-standing commitment to customer safety". According to the company, the recall has been initiated to fix "any issue" related to batteries. "The batteries will be checked for loose connectors or any damage and be repaired free of charge at any of the Okinawa authorised dealerships pan India," the company said. No FAME, no gain? India’s electric two-wheeler sales decline after increase in prices

In a statement on Twitter, <keyword id="6354720" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ola" source="Orion">Ola</keyword> said the electric vehicle industry has witnessed unprecedented success in the last couple of years despite attempts from vested interest groups, like the recent narrative on <keyword id="6479784" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="charger" source="Orion">charger</keyword> pricing. "As a leader of the industry, we remain committed to putting our customers first. Therefore, setting aside the technicalities and as an example for others to follow, we have decided to reimburse the charger monies to all eligible customers," it stated. This move will not only demonstrate the company's commitment to the EV revolution but also serve to strengthen trust and add more value for the customers, the company noted. Ola did not provide the details regarding the amount it planned to reimburse. Reports citing government officials had pegged the amount to be around Rs 130 crore. In a separate statement on Twitter, Ather Energy said that over the last few weeks, the company has been in discussion with the Ministry of Heavy Industries on the topic of bundling chargers with the purchase of an EV scooter. "While there is no legal compliance requirement to bundle chargers, after discussions with MHI and in larger interest of the EV ecosystem we recently made the change to bundle the charger with the vehicle," it said. It further said: "In order to be fair to the customers who had bought the vehicle prior to this change, we have decided to refund the invoiced amount of the chargers for vehicles bought before April 12, 2023." On Wednesday, TVS Motor Company announced that it will refund around Rs 20 crore as a goodwill benefit scheme to customers who have paid over and above the threshold limit fixed under the FAME scheme. Last week, the government sent notices to Okinawa Autotech and Hero Electric for debarment from the FAME-II Scheme and sought the recovery of incentives claimed since FY20 after the two companies were found to be violating localisation norms under the scheme. Based on anonymous emails, the government has recently re-opened audits for 2020 and 2021 where all companies were importing certain components which weren't manufactured in India. The FAME II (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid &amp;) Electric Vehicles in India) scheme commenced on April 1, 2019, for a period of three years, which was further extended for a period of two years up to March 31, 2024. The total outlay for FAME Scheme Phase II is Rs 10,000 crore. The scheme is exclusively for public and commercial transport in the segments of electric three-wheelers (e-3W), electric four-wheelers (e-4W), and electric buses. A recent report revealed that only 1 per cent household consumers plan to buy an e-scooter in the next six months amid safety and performance concerns, as the government probes multiple fires in electric two-wheelers. Around 32 percent of respondents are not convinced about the safety and performance of electric scooters in August while in March this year, the number stood at 17 per cent - as more than two dozen electric two-wheelers caught fire in March and April, according to community social media platform LocalCircles. After more than two dozen electric two-wheelers caught fire in March and April, around 7,000 units were "voluntarily" recalled by electric scooter makers such as Ola, <keyword id="7583348" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="pure-ev" source="Orion">Pure EV</keyword>, and Okinawa. The government set up a committee of experts from Centre for Fire, Explosive and Environment Safety (CFEES) and the Indian Institute of Science to carry out detailed investigation and frame 'quality-centric' guidelines for EV manufacturers, which are expected to be released soon. The fallout of EV fires is that just 1 per cent of over 11,000 respondents said they plan to buy an e-scooter in the next 6 months. Nearly 5 per cent said they are keen to buy but "were not convinced about the infrastructure available for e-scooters where I live/work" and 7 percent said they do not have funds for buying e-scooters. While there are people keen to buy e-scooters, concern over safety and performance are rising. "It is critical for the government and industry to win consumer confidence," the report mentioned. Hero Electric tops two-wheeler EV sales charts in August, Ola Electric saw declined

"Manufacturing of (battery) cells isn't regulated. Battery management system needs to be strengthened. There has been a clear partnership between battery manufacturing and battery management," he was quoted as saying in the CNBC report. Union Road Transport and Highways Minister <keyword id="26680" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="nitin-gadkari" source="Orion">Nitin Gadkari</keyword> has said that the EV fire incidents may have taken place due to higher temperature. The expert panel, which has already shared safety recommendations with the EV manufacturers to fix bigger issues, is set to make its findings public anytime soon, according to sources. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), which was earlier tasked with investigating electric two-wheeler fire incidents by the Road Transport and Highways Ministry, also found serious defects in the EV two-wheeler batteries. These defects occurred because the electric two-wheeler manufacturers like Okinawa Autotech, Pure EV, Jitendra Electric Vehicles, Ola Electric and Boom Motors may have used "lower-grade materials to cut costs", the DRDO probe had revealed. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has now issued new performance standards for lithium-ion batteries to safeguard the consumers amid the rising EV fire episodes in the country. The BIS, which comes under the Union Consumer Affairs Ministry, published the "performance standards for electronic vehicle batteries" in a bid to keep a strict control over the manufacturing of EV batteries. The central government had deputed a team of independent experts to investigate the incidents. According to a CNBC-TV18 <a href="https://www.cnbctv18.com/auto/40-electric-scooters-of-jitendra-ev-catch-fire-in-transport-container-in-nashik-13117622.htm">report</a>, 40 electric scooters from Jitendra Electric Vehicles, a part of the Shah Group were being transported from the Jitendra EV factory in Nashik to Bengaluru when a fire was reported in the upper segment of the container on April 9. "An unfortunate incident took place on 9th April near our factory gate in a scooter transport container. The situation was immediately brought under control by timely intervention from our team," the company told CNBC-TV18 in a statement. “Safety being of prime importance, we are investigating the root cause and we will come up with the findings in coming days,” the company added. The fire has added to the safety concerns as there have been multiple reports of electric scooters catching fire over the past few weeks. This could very well hamper the popularity of electric vehicles in the country and end up slowing down the rollout. Reliable sources said that the EV makers have been given time till July end to respond in detail to the notices. Once the responses are in, the government will decide which penal action is to be taken, if any, against the EV makers at fault. Last month, the <keyword id="2619929" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="central-consumer-protection-authority" source="Orion">Central Consumer Protection Authority</keyword> (CCPA), which comes under the Union Consumer Affairs Ministry, sent notices to Pure EV and <keyword id="12512499" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="boom-motors" source="Orion">Boom Motors</keyword> after their e-scooters exploded in April.
