Broken down by source, it sees oil and gas accounting for 54% of the global energy mix by 2050, coal at 13%, nuclear energy at 6%, bioenergy at 10%, and renewables like wind, solar, and hydroelectric at 15%.That forecast stands in contrast to predictions from the International Energy Agency, which predicts that oil and gas demand will peak and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/commodities/global-oil-demand-prices-supply-opec-us-crude-producers-iea-2024-6">plateau at 105.6 million barrels per day</a> by 2029.Exxon, the leading oil and gas company in the US, pointed to a rise in the global population to 10 billion in 2050, up from 8 billion today.With half of the world's population currently living below Exxon's "modern energy minimum"—having enough energy for housing, infrastructure, jobs, and mobility—the company projects a 15% increase in global energy use is necessary for reliable energy worldwide by 2050.That rise in energy use will be predominantly driven by a 25% increase among developing countries, whose current energy problems put inhabitants at risk from harmful cooking fuels, limited electricity, and poverty, the report says.Developed countries, on the other hand, will decrease energy use by 10% due to improved efficiency.The report says that even greater adoption of electric vehicles won't make a dent in oil and gas usage."What many don't realize is that making gasoline is but one relatively small use for oil," Exxon said in its report, adding that the majority of the world's oil is used for industrial processes like manufacturing, and for transportation like shipping, trucking, and air travel."These services are needed for modern life – and they also fuel future economic growth in the developing world," the report says.At the same time, the report predicts carbon emissions will drop for the first time in 2030. Last year, the company's annual report said the world likely won't meet the emission reduction targets that were set in the Paris Climate Accords in 2015 to curb the effects of climate change.

ExxonMobil CEO Darren Woods told <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.semafor.com/article/11/12/2024/exxon-ceo-darren-woods-donald-trump-shouldnt-scrap-methane-regulations">Semafor</a> on November 12 that while he wants to maintain US oil production at its current highs, the market is already well supplied. "I don't think today that production in the US is constrained," he said. "I don't know that there's an opportunity to unleash a lot of production in the near term." During the presidential campaign, Trump said that he planned to lower energy prices — including the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/09/10/us/politics/trump-economics-gas-tariffs-inflation.html">cost of gas</a> — by increasing US oil production. "We will frack, frack, frack and drill, baby, drill," Trump <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.factcheck.org/2024/10/the-issues-trumps-proposal-to-lower-prices-by-increasing-energy-production/">said</a> in October. "I will cut your energy prices in half within 12 months." In September, Trump <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/09/10/us/politics/trump-economics-gas-tariffs-inflation.html">said</a> he would reduce gas prices to below $2 a gallon. Energy analysts told Business Insider that big oil companies are more focused on returning money to shareholders than investing in projects that boost production, especially because China isn't importing as much oil due to its economic downturn. Their comments underscore how little control a US president has over the oil and gas market, including prices at the pump. "It's a global market," Ben Cahill, director of energy markets and policy at the University of Texas at Austin, told BI. "There's very little any president can do to change the direction of oil or gasoline prices." Cahill added that he expects the US to increase oil production, but it will happen gradually. The US is already producing record amounts of oil, at <a target="_blank" href="https://www.eia.gov/todayinenergy/detail.php?id=61545">12.9 million barrels of crude a day in 2023</a> compared with about 11 million barrels per day in 2020, when Trump was in office. Last year, the US also became the world's biggest exporter of natural gas. And there is room for the industry to expand. Woods <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2024/11/01/exxon-ceo-says-us-election-wont-affect-oil-production.html">told</a> CNBC earlier this month that there are areas in the Gulf of Mexico — where federal leasing hasn't allowed companies to drill — that could be a source of additional oil production in the long term. Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, told BI that Trump could take some steps to try to boost US oil production, including easing regulations to open up additional places for companies to drill and working with OPEC. However, he said boosting oil production while keeping prices at a desired level is a "delicate balance" for the industry. "If oil prices drop, you're likely to see a natural decline in US oil production over the long run," he said, adding, "Oil companies have shareholders to be accountable to." In recent years, the US has increased oil production even as President Joe Biden imposed stricter limits on greenhouse gas emissions from power plants, oil and gas infrastructure, and gas-powered vehicles to help slow the climate crisis. In a separate interview with <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.wsj.com/business/energy-oil/exxon-says-trump-should-keep-u-s-in-paris-climate-pact-3d8de471">The Wall Street Journal</a>, Woods added that the US shouldn't drop out of the Paris Agreement as Trump did in his first term and has promised to do again. Said Anu Aggarwal, Head – Corporate Banking, Kotak Mahindra Bank said, “RBI's decision to hold the repo rate at 6.5% for the ninth consecutive time was on expected lines amid persistent inflationary pressures with June inflation coming in at 5.1%, and food in particular running away at 8.4%. We need to watch out for Fed action in September when a rate cut is near certain which will set the stage for our own likely cut by December. RBI's commitment to inflation target of 4% while our GDP growth is on track seems the right thing to do.” <h2>IT, Metal indices witness correction </h2>Aditya Gaggar, director of Progressive Shares notes that amid extreme volatility on either sides, Nifty50 settled the weekly expiry day on a weak foot at 24,117.00 with a loss of 180.50 points. Among the sectors, pharma was the best performer while IT and metal corrected the most. With a marginal loss of over 0.30% ,mid and small caps outperformed the frontline Index. "The index is oscillating in a wide range where the downside seems to be protected at 23,965 (near 50DMA) while the higher side is capped at 24,330 (bearish gap zone) and a breakout on either side is a must for a clear picture", he noted. Shrikant Chouhan, Head Equity Research, Kotak Securities says that today, the benchmark indices witnessed a volatile trading session, after a roller coaster activity the Nifty ends 197 points lower while the Sensex was down by 582 points. "Among Sectors, IT and Metal indices lost the most shed over 1.5%, whereas some buying was seen in selective media and pharma stocks. Technically, market consistently facing selling pressure at higher levels from the day highest levels Nifty/ Sensex shed over 250/800 points. A bearish candle on daily charts and double top formation on intraday charts indicates further weakness from the current levels. For the day traders intraday texture is non-directional hence level based trading would be the ideal strategy", said Chouhan.

ONGC, Coal India, Hero Moto Corp, Mahindra and Mahindra and Infosys gained early edge in today's trade, while Asian Paint, Titan and Kotak Bank were amongst the top losers in early trade. Mostly all broad market indices, including small cap and mid cap indices, jumped over 1%, with the exception of India VIX, which slipped 8.88% during trade today. If the market falls below this, it may decline to 23,700 or 23,600/78,000-77,800, where it has support from retracements and long-term averages. It's advisable to consider selective buying around this level. "On the upside, the major resistance levels are 24,150/79,000 and 24,400/79,900. It's recommended that weak, long positions be reduced to around 24,300/24,400. If the market moves sharply above 24,400/79,900 levels it may compel short sellers to cover short sell positions", he continued.

The broader indices also faced pressure, dropping over 2% each. "This decline signals caution ahead of the Union Budget, as participants chose to book profits. We may see further dips in the Nifty, with the next crucial support at the 24,150 level. Traders are advised to avoid aggressive positions and opt for hedged trades. It is also recommended to focus on index majors rather than midcap and smallcap stocks for now", said Mishra. During the day, Infosys (up by 1.78%), ITC (up by 0.62%), Asian Paints (up by 0.60%) and Britannia (up by 0.06%) managed to inch up, and were amongst the top gainers for the day. On the other hand, Tata Steel (down by 4.97%), JSW Steel (down by 4.68%), BPCL (down by 3.98%), <keyword id="20129733" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hindalco" source="keywords">Hindalco</keyword> (down by 3.91%) and ONGC (down by 3.44%) were amongst the leading laggards. Out of the 2,738 stocks traded during the day, 530 saw advances, while 2,181 saw declines. Another 72 remained unchanged. 86 stocks hit their 52-week high price, while 23 stocks hit their 52-week low as well. 54 stocks touched the upper circuit during <keyword id="20114014" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="trading" source="keywords">trading</keyword> today, but most of them (157) remained in the lower circuit. <h2>Expert Outlook</h2>Amol Athawale, VP-Technical Research, Kotak Securities is of the view that the medium term texture of the market is still in to the positive side. "However, the current market texture is non-directional and volatile hence level based trading would be the ideal strategy for the traders. 24,500/80,400 and 24,350/80,000 would act as a key support zone for the bulls while 24,850-25,000 / 81,600-82,000 could be the key resistance areas for the traders. However, below 24,350/80,000 the sentiment could change. Below the same, positional traders may prefer to exit out from the trading long positions. For Bank Nifty now, 52,800 and 53,200 would be the immediate resistance areas for the positional traders", he continued. Osho Krishan, Senior Analyst - Technical &amp; Derivatives, Angel One Ltd explains that as we approach the upcoming Budget week, the volatility index may experience an uptick. This is due to India VIX teetering on the edge of a consolidation breakout. "As far as levels are concerned, a sustainable plunge below 24500 is likely to provide some more respite to the benchmark for a potential downside to 24,300-24,200 on an intermediate basis, while the sacrosanct support lies at 24,000 mark. The trading range is highly anticipated to broaden amidst the budget week, and hence, proper risk management is warranted for the participants. Furthermore, while looking at the elevated parameters and rising volatility caution is recommended.", Krishan underlined.
