Chip-maker Intel is reportedly exploring a deal to acquire GlobalFoundries, a semiconductor company its rival AMD spun off a decade ago, for nearly $30 billion.<br /><br />According to a report in The <keyword id="6384660" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="wall-street-journal">Wall Street Journal</keyword> citing sources, "It isn't guaranteed one (the deal) will come together, and GlobalFoundries could proceed with a planned initial public offering".<br /><br />Both GlobalFoundries and Intel (which have a market value of nearly $225 billion) have denied any suck talks.<br /><br />"We will decline to comment on rumour and speculation," an Intel spokesperson told The <keyword id="6765301" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Verge">Verge</keyword>.<br /><br />GlobalFoundries is owned by US-based Mubadala Investment Co, an investment arm of the Abu Dhabi government.<br /><br />Intel in March announced to invest $20 billion for two new manufacturing facilities in the US, along with plans to to outsource more of its chip production to third-party foundries.<br /><br />New Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger also unveiled a new branch of the company called Intel Foundry Services, to become a major provider of foundry capacity in the US and Europe to serve customers globally.<br /><br />The two new fabs (or factories) will be built in Arizona, located at the company's <keyword id="11653920" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ocotillo">Ocotillo</keyword> campus. Chip-maker Intel in talks to acquire GlobalFoundries for $30 billion, says Wall Street Journal Report

<ul class="summary-list"><li><strong>Lisa Strothers, 36, was laid off from her job last April.</strong></li><li><strong>She enrolled in a 10-day semiconductor training course and landed a new job at Intel soon after. </strong></li></ul><p>When Lisa Strothers, 36, was <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wells-fargo-confirms-mortgage-lending-layoffs-as-rates-climb-2022-4">laid off</a> from her mortgage industry job in April of last year, the Arizona-based single mom wasn't sure what to do next. </p><p>A few weeks later, she told Insider, she received an email about the "Quick Start" <a href="https://info.maricopacorporate.com/semiconductor" target="_blank" rel="noopener">program</a> — a 10-day crash course on how to be a semiconductor processing technician. The program, the product of a new partnership between major semiconductor companies — notably Intel and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tsmc-us-china-tensions-may-dictate-fate-of-global-economy-2022-10">Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company</a> — and three community colleges in Arizona's Maricopa County, was looking for applicants to take part in a test pilot version of the program that June. </p><p>Strothers, who has a Bachelor's degree in film and media studies and a Master's in human services, said she wasn't very familiar with the semiconductor industry at the time. She decided to apply because the program appeared to be open to a wide range of candidates, and she was guaranteed an interview with a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/semiconductor-ai-artificial-intelligence-stock-picks-to-buy-investing-wave-2023-6">semiconductor company</a> if she successfully completed the course. It was also convenient that the program was set to be held at Mesa Community College (only a 15-minute drive from her home) and she wasn't working, which made the two-week, four-hours-per-day commitment feel manageable. </p><p>"They let you know in that email, 'You do not have to have experience. We're going to train you. We're going to provide you with the basics that you need,'" she said. "So that's what intrigued me and made me move forward, because it was like, 'Okay, this is a chance to get into the tech field without having any experience.'"</p><p>She applied, went through a virtual interview process, learned she had been selected, and started soon after. Since officially kicking off in July, over 600 students have taken part in the program at one of three Maricopa County community colleges (MCCC). </p><p>The program's recent origins — and brevity — reflect the growing demand for US workers in the semiconductor industry. Last summer, President Biden signed into law the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chips-act-bill-to-boost-us-chipmaking-competition-with-china-2022-7">Chips and Science Act</a>, which included over $52 billion in semiconductor subsidies to bolster supply chains and reduce the US's dependence on China and Taiwan. </p><p>The legislation has helped spur the building of US factories that produce the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-tim-cook-america-us-made-chips-first-time-decade-2022-12">semiconductor chips</a> that power everything from iPhones to cars to washing machines. But in the US, the center of the industry is Arizona, the nation's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-tsmc-chipmaker-investing-billions-us-cost-more-make-chips-2022-12">leader in semiconductor investment</a> and the home to two of the three largest semiconductor manufacturers in the world: Intel and TSMC. Since February of 2021, 24 semiconductor-related companies have announced plans to <a href="https://www.axios.com/local/phoenix/2023/03/02/phoenix-semiconductor-chips-tsmc-intel-asm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">expand or relocate</a> their operations in Arizona, per Axios.</p><p>Programs like the one enrolled in by Strothers are designed to address a shortage of skilled workers. Deloitte estimates that the industry could face a <a href="https://www2.deloitte.com/content/dam/Deloitte/us/Documents/technology-media-telecommunications/us-tmt-global-semiconductor-shortage-pov-v3.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">shortfall</a> of 70,000 to 90,000 workers over the next few years — something that's already caused the opening of a TSMC facility to be <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2023/07/21/tech/tsmc-arizona-production-delay/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">delayed until 2025</a>. </p><div type="image" title="Cesar Becerra" height="2274" width="3024" msid="102474793" hostid="261" sizebytes="263854"></div><p>On cue, community colleges and universities across the country are <a href="https://techmonitor.ai/technology/silicon/can-universities-fix-the-semiconductor-talent-shortage">partnering</a> with chipmakers like Intel, TSMC, Micron, and GlobalFoundries to try and close the gap. The Quick Start program's website says that semiconductor companies will hire <a href="https://info.maricopacorporate.com/semiconductor" target="_blank" rel="noopener">over 20,000</a> workers in Arizona in the coming years.</p><h2><strong style="background-color: #ffffff;">How to become a semiconductor technician in 10 days</strong></h2><p>In addition to a $15 registration fee, the tuition for the 10-day MCCC course is $291. But the tuition isn't paid up front, and any Arizona resident who successfully passes the course has their tuition fully covered by grant funding — non-residents are partially covered. Costs are subject to changes in future grant funding, an MCCC representative noted. </p><p>Strothers said that most of the 15 to 20 students in her class — which consisted entirely of women — didn't have any tech background. The test pilot group was sourced by Fresh Start Women's Foundation, a Phoenix-based <a href="https://freshstartwomen.org/?gclid=CjwKCAjw_aemBhBLEiwAT98FMkiX1Koenu3CffMTewh80WCjWDjL3MxvTvz0okKWnsuufRCBXE5eMBoCI6sQAvD_BwE">nonprofit</a>, in collaboration with MCCC. </p><p>As of June, 66% of students who enrolled in the program have been people of color, one-third have been women, and nearly half have been between the ages of 18 and 29, according to MCCC data. </p><p>Strothers said the 10-day course consisted of a mix of lecturing and hands-on experience, and that all of her instructors were Intel employees, which provided valuable firsthand knowledge of what it's like to work in the semiconductor industry. </p><p>In lectures, she said she learned about the specific role semiconductor processing technicians play in the manufacturing process. During the hands-on portion, students put on "bunny suits" — garments used to minimize contaminants — and practiced performing troubleshooting on a variety of tools in a simulation <a href="https://www.techtarget.com/searchstorage/definition/semiconductor-fab?Offer=abt_pubpro_AI-Insider">fab</a>.</p><div type="image" title="Lisa Strothers" height="1347" width="1796" msid="102474795" hostid="261" sizebytes="280112"></div><p>The course concluded at the end of the two weeks with a final exam, which Strothers said had written and hands-on components. She passed the exam and received her program certificate — a <a href="https://www.nims-skills.org/semiconductor-pre-apprentice-credential" target="_blank" rel="noopener">semiconductor pre-apprentice credential</a>. Among students who attempted the full program, 93% of them earned the final certification as of June, according to MCCC. </p><p>Less than a week later, Strothers began interviewing for new roles — the interviews are typically set up at job fairs on MCCC's campuses. She ultimately landed a semiconductor processing technician role at Intel's <a href="https://www.exploreintel.com/ocotillo" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ocotillo</a> factory, which she began last August —  just four months after she'd been laid off. </p><p>Of 240 former Quick Start students who filled out an employment outcome form as of June 30th, 75, or 31%, said they had been "hired in field," per MCCC. The others were either still looking for employment, 58%, or not looking for work, 8%. </p><p>Despite the program's strong connection to Intel, an MCCC representative told Insider that all the area's semiconductor companies are part of an advisory board that oversees the program and that the goal is to funnel students to all of these employers. </p><h2><strong>The 12-hour shifts are tough, but the job is "never boring"</strong></h2><p>Strothers said there are pros and cons to the job. </p><p>Pros: She's earning a bit more than she did at her previous role and said Intel has a solid benefits program. </p><p>Strothers declined to provide her income for privacy reasons, but the average annual income of Quick Start graduates is roughly <a href="https://time.com/6289816/biden-chips-workforce-training/">$43,000</a>, according to Fresh Start. The MCCC website says entry-level technicians earn <a href="https://info.maricopacorporate.com/semiconductor">$20 to $25</a> per hour depending on their experience. The Bureau of Labor Statistics lists the median annual income for semiconductor processing technicians at <a href="https://www.bls.gov/oes/current/oes519141.htm">roughly $45,000</a>. </p><div type="image" title="students at Quick Start program" height="3024" width="4032" msid="102474797" hostid="261" sizebytes="461750"></div><p>Another positive: The job is "never boring." </p><p>"Every day you come to work, you are going to learn something different," she said. "I like that this job keeps my interest. I'm constantly learning and I'm constantly in training here."</p><p>Strothers described her position as a "point of contact" role — a middle person between the techs who physically work on the tools and the engineers, which they call "tool owners." </p><p>She said most days consist of a few morning meetings, and then she is given a list of tasks that are typically related to troubleshooting or maintenance on a tool. She said most of her work is done on a computer, but that some of the "health checks" on tools are more hands-on. </p><p>She also said she really likes her team. Even though she's the only one without any prior background in the field, she said they are all very patient and help her learn. </p><p>The biggest downside to her job, Strothers said, is her schedule, which consists of 12-hour shifts three-to-four days per week — the number of days changes each week. </p><p>"I start work at 5:45 AM, and I get off at 6:15 PM," she said. "So, having that type of schedule, and obviously being a single mom, that's been a little difficult."</p><p>Strothers has two pieces of advice for anyone considering enrolling in MCCC's Quick Start course — where there's currently a lengthy waiting list — or a similar program.</p><p>First, be open to learning. </p><p>"Regardless of what you know and what you feel like you think you know, I felt like that you just need to be teachable, open-minded, willing to learn and willing to take constructive criticism," she said. </p><p>Second, be patient with yourself.</p><p>"It's overwhelming when you do not know this information, and you're new to the field," she said. "But as long as you're patient with yourself, and you're paying attention, and coming to class, and believing in yourself you'll be fine."</p><p>Going forward, she said she plans to stay at Intel because there could be a variety of opportunities for her — she said no one on her team is in the same role they started in. She said she hopes to eventually find a position with a schedule that will allow her to spend more time with her nine-year-old daughter. </p><p>"We are a semiconducting company, but we also need people who can do this and do that," she said. "We have to have a legal team. We have to have a media team. They're letting you know this is a step in the door, but there are so many different places you can go with it."</p>

<p><a href="http://businessinsider.com/digital-industry-insider"></div><p></p></div></div><p>Intel is one of the world's biggest technology companies, with semiconductor manufacturing facilities all over the globe. Those plants have to maintain rigorously controlled environments where every surface must be clean, every process must be perfect and even the smallest improvements can make a large impact.</p></div><p>Intel works hard to ensure that these facilities are constantly pushing the technological edge. So when Intel wanted to partner with a cloud service provider to develop industry-leading solutions, they chose to bring GE and its analytical software running on Predix, the&#xa0;cloud-based operating system for the Industrial Internet, to their Ocotillo Fab / Sort Manufacturing plant in Arizona.</p><p>On Tuesday, GE CEO Jeff Immelt and Intel CEO Brian Krzanich spoke at the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco about the partnership and the future of the Industrial Internet. They noted this&#xa0;is a significant step in the two companies' plan to eventually offer GE's Industrial Internet software on Intel-powered devices.</p><p>"GE and Intel are working together on a number of initiatives - including making manufacturing facilities more smart and connected," said Intel's Krzanich.</p><p>Before approaching outside customers, Intel first wanted to be a Predix customer itself. The multi-million dollar deal to move parts of the Ocotillo semiconductor plant onto Predix is just the first step. Intel's ultimate goal is to utilize Predix on top of its own internal software and develop a joint offering with GE to streamline its fab processes around the world. GE will then roll out the solutions to GE's more than 400 factories globally. The two companies also plan to sell a joint offering to other manufacturers that want to optimize their operations.</p><p>Once the system is in place, Ocotillo will be using products from across the GE Digital portfolio, says Abhi Kunte, GE Digital's global head of technology strategic alliances. That includes Predix, OpShield, and the Brilliant Manufacturing and Asset Performance Management suites of solutions, which run on the Predix cloud. This portfolio will integrate with Intel's internal analytics engines, Intel-based hardware and Intel's manufacturing infrastructure to analyze data in new ways.</p><p>Even companies that don't make chips will benefit from the Industrial Internet and GE Digital's industrial software offerings. The goal is to eventually get every industrial company that uses Intel chips - and most of them do - to connect their operations to Predix and start analyzing their operations in greater detail, says Denzil Samuels, global head of channels, alliances, business development and ventures, GE Digital.</p><p>"We want to embed Predix on every single Intel device, so that as they sell those devices, they're selling Predix, and the customer just has to activate it," Samuels says.</p><p>An example of the power of the GE-Intel partnership can be seen in GE's Greenville, S.C. <a href="http://www.gereports.com/smart-leds-are-starting-to-revolutionize-manufacturing/" target="_blank">gas turbine factory</a>. Intel sensors, attached to Current by GE light fixtures, send data to gateways, which aggregate the information and send it to the Predix cloud. The sensors measure the temperature of the air near the turbine collars as their rotors are attached, allowing factory workers to know when the part is cool enough to safely add the next rotor. By avoiding defects and eliminating the need to re-work parts, GE believes this new system can save the company hundreds of thousands of dollars.</p><p>Sensor-based lights will also be installed in Intel's Santa Clara, Calif., headquarters complex, where 4,500 LED lights will feature energy-saving controls. Of those, about 1,000 will also have the ability to sense occupancy, allowing facilities managers, for instance, to program lights to turn off lights when no one is in a room. This pilot is expected to be the first of several at Intel facilities.</p><p>Smart lighting also figures into GE's and Intelss plans for wired cities. Intel and GE partner to bring Predix to more industries

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.cbp.gov/newsroom/local-media-release/cbp-officers-seize-gaming-system-filled-drugs">US Customs and Border Patrol</a></span></p><p class="caption">US border agents uncovered 3 pounds of meth hidden in an Xbox in September 2016.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>US Customs and Border Patrol agents in Nogales, Arizona, <a href="https://www.cbp.gov/newsroom/local-media-release/cbp-officers-seize-gaming-system-filled-drugs" target="_blank">intercepted</a> 3 pounds of methamphetamine crammed inside an Xbox gaming system on September 15.</p><p>The agents came across the narcotics when a 16-year-old resident of Nogales attempted to transit the Morley Pedestrian crossing into the US from Sonora, Mexico.</p><p>According to a CBP <a href="https://www.cbp.gov/newsroom/local-media-release/cbp-officers-seize-gaming-system-filled-drugs" target="_blank">release</a>, a narcotics-detecting canine directed attention to the Xbox, and after an inspection the agents seized the drugs, which had an estimated worth of about $10,000.</p><p>The 16-year-old was arrested and turned over to Homeland Security Investigations.</p><p>Synthetic drugs like meth have become increasingly common as producers and traffickers adjust to factors like marijuana legalization and widespread heroin use in the US.</p><p>"That has shifted the marketplace in a way. It means that Mexican illicit-drug exporters have had to ... diversify their offerings," David Shirk, a professor at the University of San Diego, told Business Insider. "They have moved into ... heroin as a source of revenue, but also ... into other, I would say, synthetic drugs, like MDMA and various forms of methamphetamine."</p><p>While seizures at the border can only reveal so much about the black-market drug trade, reports from Customs and Border Patrol indicate that heroin and other synthetic drugs are frequently intercepted at the US-Mexico frontier.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://www.dea.gov/divisions/hq/2015/hq110415.shtml">DEA 2015 NDTA</a></span></p><p class="caption">Meth seizures were up all along the US border in 2014.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>On September 9, a search of a Chevy Tahoe crossing the border at Brownsville, Texas, uncovered 37 pounds of what was believed to be methamphetamine, <a href="https://www.cbp.gov/newsroom/local-media-release/brownsville-port-entry-cbp-officers-seize-740k-methamphetamine-gateway" target="_blank">valued at $740,000</a>. That same day, a search of a Nissan Murano at the Laredo, Texas, border crossing <a href="https://www.cbp.gov/newsroom/local-media-release/cbp-officers-seize-357k-hard-narcotics-laredo-port-entry" target="_blank">turned up</a> 12 pounds of crystal meth and 4 pounds of heroin, worth a total of nearly $360,000.</p><p>In two separate incidents on September 9 at the border crossing at Nogales, Arizona, <a href="https://www.cbp.gov/newsroom/local-media-release/cbp-officers-stop-19m-drugs-nogales-border" target="_blank">17 pounds of meth</a> valued at more than $52,000 was found in the wheel well of a Dodge van, while later that day a 16-year-old woman was found to have nearly <a href="https://www.cbp.gov/newsroom/local-media-release/cbp-officers-stop-19m-drugs-nogales-border" target="_blank">3 pounds of heroin</a> worth almost $48,000 in her undergarments.</p><p>On September 13 at the Nogales port of entry, a Mexican woman was found to be <a href="https://www.cbp.gov/newsroom/local-media-release/woman-hides-heroin-disguised-baby-formula" target="_blank">carrying</a> three pounds of heroin worth $50,000 in a can of baby formula. US border agents in Arizona intercepted an Xbox crammed with meth

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Following last week's busy US economic schedule, which ended with <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/us-labor-market-is-coming-together-2015-6">a strong jobs report</a>, this week's schedule is looking light.<p>Also, there are no Federal Reserve officials schedule to speak about things like the economy or monetary policy.</p><p>The highlight is likely to be the May retail sales report on Thursday. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/april-retail-sales-may-13-2015-5">April's retail sales report was a flop</a>, which only added to everyone's <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/april-changed-economic-outlook-2015-5">worries of a Q2 economic lull</a>.</p><p>"Cautious consumer spending behavior plus a weak inflation environment has weighed on retail sales activity so far this year," Wells Fargo's Sam Bullard said. "Growth prospects look much better in May, primarily off the 7.6% jump in motor vehicle sales."</p><p>"Bottom line, most economic forecasts, including our own, are predicated on the consumer, in part, to carry the US economy forward."</p><p>Here's your Monday Scouting Report:</p><p><strong>Top Stories</strong></p><ul><li><strong>The job market is finally coming together.</strong> The May jobs report was great all around. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/may-jobs-report-june-5-2015-6">US companies added 280,000 nonfarm payrolls</a>, which was much stronger than expected. The unemployment rate climbed to 5.5% from 5.4%, but that had everything to do with <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/why-the-unemployment-rate-rose-2015-6">Americans entering the labor force</a>.<br><br>Importantly, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/wage-growth-2015-6">wages finally climbed</a> at a respectable pace. Average hourly earnings increased 0.3% month-over-month or 2.3% year-over-year. Here's what Deutsche Bank's Torsten Sløk said: "We started writing about wages a year ago and over the past 12 months the Employment Cost Index has been trending higher and we are now also seeing average hourly earnings growing at the fastest rate in five years ... This should put upward pressure on the entire yield curve and the dollar going forward. For equities it is positive because higher wages means higher household income, which means more demand in the economy and ultimately higher topline growth for corporate America. This is what we have been waiting for since 2009. In other words, the virtuous cycle has begun."</br></br></li><li><strong>...And it was perfect for the Fed</strong>. Citi's Steven Englander argued that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/jobs-report-perfect-for-the-fed-2015-6">jobs report supported the Federal Reserve's case for raising rates sooner than later</a>. But he also, argued that it was not good enough to get a rate hike at the Fed's upcoming June meeting. Here's Englander: "This is the best of all possible worlds for the Fed. Very good numbers, plus some signs that labor force is finally responding as well as wages. In a better world they would be raising rates in June but the weakness in aggregate demand in Q1 is likely to hold them back."</li></ul><p><strong>Economic Calendar<br /></strong></p><ul><li><span style="text-decoration: underline;">NY Fed Survey Of Consumer Expectations (Mon)</span>: The SCE will be published at 11:00 a.m. ET. From Nomura: "Inflation expectations within this survey increased in April after falling off in March. Expectations have bounced around recently, but other surveys, such as the University of Michigan consumer sentiment survey, suggest that expectations are generally moving within a stable range. Long-term inflation expectations are important for the future path of inflation and thus monetary policy. We will see if inflation expectations within this survey continue to increase in May after the drop in March."<span style="text-decoration: underline;"><br /></span></li><li><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Job Openings &amp; Labor Turnover Survey (Tues)</span>: Here's Credit Suisse: "Job openings in March declined to 4.99mn after jumping to an upwardly-revised 5.14mn in February. The ratio of vacancies to unemployed workers dipped to 0.58, but remains elevated at the second highest level since November 2007. Measures of job turnover, which tend to lead wage acceleration, remain at levels consistent with a pickup in wage growth over the medium term."</li><li><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Employer Costs For Employee Compensation (Wed)</span>: The ECEC report will be published at 10:00 a.m. ET. Here's UBS's Sam Coffin explaining how it differs from the closely-watched employee cost index (ECI): "The ECI attempts to measure wage pressures by comparing how compensation would have changed over time if there had been no changes in the composition of employment across industries or occupations. In contrast, the ECEC measures what employers are actually spending on compensation at a point in time. As such, it uses the actual mix of industry, occupation, and firm employment. It is more closely tied to actual labor incomes."</li><li><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Retail Sales (Thurs)</span>: Economists estimate retail sales jumped 1.2% in May. Excluding autos and gas, core retail sales are estimated to have increased by 0.5%. From Nomura: "Retail sales disappointed in April, remaining unchanged from March. We have yet to see the money saved at the pump provide any strong boost to spending in other categories, in particular, discretionary spending categories. We expect to see a solid increase in sales in May, representing some bounce back from the low level of sales in April. With the personal saving rate elevated, the consumer spending outlook for the medium term remains positive."</li><li><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Initial Jobless Claims (Thurs)</span>: Economists estimate initial claims climbed to 277,000 from 276,000 a week ago. From Bank of America Merrill Lynch: "Claims have been trending higher little by little over the last month but generally remain quite low, indicating a strong labor market. There is growing anecdotal evidence of labor skill shortages, which supports continued low levels of firings."</li><li><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Household Net Worth (Thurs)</span>: At 12:00 p.m. ET, we'll get the quarterly flow of funds report, which will reveal the Q1 change in household net worth. Here's UBS's Sam Coffin: "Household net worth rose an estimated 1.6% q/q (not annualized) in Q1-slightly faster than the pace of the past year. The gain reflected higher housing and equity prices plus slight slowing in nonmortgage credit extension. The net worth/income ratio likely rose to 6.34 from 6.29."</li><li><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Producer Price Index (Fri)</span>: Economists estimate PPI increased by 0.4% month-over-month, while declining 1.1% on a year-over-year basis. Excluding food and energy, core prices are estimated to have climbed by 0.1% and 0.7%, respectively. Here's Nomura: "Although the lagged effect of the stronger dollar and continuing decline in food prices probably continued to exert disinflationary pressures, the recent stabilization in energy prices and a rebound in retailers' margins are expected to push up the headline index of PPI."</li><li><span style="text-decoration: underline;">University of Michigan Sentiment (Fri)</span>: Economists estimate this index of sentiment increased to 91.4 in June from 90.7 in May. From BNP Paribas: "Michigan sentiment is likely to continue to stabilize near its current levels, reflecting continued elevation in consumer optimism. While gasoline prices are picking up, employment has returned to a solid trend and equities have held relatively steady." From Bank of America Merrill Lynch: "Although gas prices have risen through May and into the early part of June, improving employment conditions and a strong stock market are likely to offset the financial burden to consumers of increased spending at the gas station."</li></ul><p><strong>Market Commentary</strong></p><p class="p1"><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Now that we have some pretty clear signs of wage pressure in the economy, what does that mean for stocks?<br /></span></p><p class="p1"><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">In a note to clients in May, UBS's Julian Emanuel warned that risks include an earlier rate hike from the Federal Reserve and increasing pressure on corporate profit margins. The former would likely spark some volatility in stock prices.<br /></span></p><p>The latter, while being unfavorable for earnings, would come with some offset on the top line. Emanuel explained: "...The most notable and obvious impact to stocks is the effect of higher wages on margins - which remain near highs - and has been a main driver behind recent earnings growth, particularly given sluggish top-line growth ...
