<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="900700" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Chobani">Chobani</keyword> is offering its factory workers paid time off and on-site <keyword id="8764262" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="covid">COVID</keyword> vaccination clinics.</li><li>It's one of multiple food companies that's offering jabs at <keyword id="6355058" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="work">work</keyword> and incentives for vaccines.</li><li>Chobani is betting that availability and education will help get its workforce to herd immunity.</li></ul><p>COVID-19 complicated work for employees at food-producing factories. As vaccines become more widely distributed, their employers are looking for ways to bring the shots to them - and give them incentives to get one.</p><p>Chobani, known for its Greek yogurt, is organizing <keyword id="24209" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="vaccine">vaccine</keyword> clinics for the roughly 1,000 workers at its plant in Twin Falls, Idaho. The first takes place Thursday, with another scheduled for April 1. The company is also giving employees six hours of paid time off - three per vaccination, assuming they get a Pfizer or Moderna vaccine, said Peter McGuinness, president and COO at Chobani.</p><p>"They're hourly workers, and we don't want them to be penalized in any way, shape or form when they get vaccinated," McGuinness said. Here are 8 other food companies that experts say could go public</a></em></p><p>Chobani also plans to offer on-sight vaccinations and time off for its employees at its facility in South Edmeston, New York. Between hourly and corporate roles, Chobani employs about 2,200 people in total. Idaho officials have opened vaccinations up to a wider group of essential workers, including food and agricultural workers, faster than other states, leading Chobani to offer the on-site clinics there first, McGuinness said.</p><p>Food companies found themselves in a tough spot last spring: While they had to take precautions to keep workers safe, such as providing personal protective equipment to workers and reconfiguring their factories for social distancing, demand for groceries only grew as more consumers stayed at home, putting additional pressure on their manufacturing lines. </p><p>Now that vaccine production is scaling up, many food makers are offering incentives for their workers to get jabs. Smoothie maker Bolthouse Farms is <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/one-ceo-dangles-500-bonus-for-workers-to-get-covid-19-vaccinations-11616342400">offering workers a $500 bonus</a> for getting vaccinated in addition to organizing on-sight vaccination, according to the Wall Street Journal. Meat processor Tyson Foods, which had to slow production and even temporarily close some plants due to COVID-19 outbreaks last year, is also hosting on-site vaccinations as well as offering workers up to four hours of pay when they receive a vaccine from a another source, <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/Business/outbreaks-scandal-tyson-foods-offering-free-site-vaccines/story?id=76340291">ABC News reported</a> earlier this month.</p><p>But getting shots in arms will take more than just offering them at workplaces. Recent <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/Business/outbreaks-scandal-tyson-foods-offering-free-site-vaccines/story?id=76340291">polling</a> from Civiqs suggests that significant groups of Americans, including a majority of white Republicans and roughly one third each of Black and Latinx Americans, are either opposed to getting vaccinated or unsure about it. Public health experts have warned that the US risks a resurgence of COVID-19 later this year if enough Americans remain opposed to getting vaccinated.</p><p>McGuiness told Insider that Chobani has hosted town halls for employees with health officials and doctors who work in the communities where its plants are located. "The more educated you are and the more in-the-loop you are on the benefits of the vaccine, the more likely you are to get vaccinated," he said. </p><p>Chobani also expects word of mouth - specifically, vaccinated employees talking about their experience with coworkers who have reservations - to convince others to get vaccinated over time. "That's why I want to do multiple events," McGuiness said, adding that Chobani expects to schedule more on-site clinics, including more at its Twin Falls plant than the two that are already on the calendar.</p><p>McGuiness said that Chobani's plants have stayed open during the pandemic without interruptions and kept pace with demand for its yogurt, creamers, and other products. The company is reportedly <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/foods-brands-expected-ipo-2021-1">considering an IPO</a> for later this year, and it recently signed a distribution agreement with PepsiCo.</p><p>But he said that the focus of the vaccine drive is not to increase factory productivity, adding that the company will follow federal and state guidelines on COVID-19 safety measures in the workplace. "I don't look at this as, 'Hey, three months down the road, if I get more people vaccinated, maybe I can grow more or make more money,'" he said.</p>

Advertisers pull ads amid the attack on the US Capitol

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Getty Images</span></p><p class="caption">WeWork CEO Adam Neumann.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul class="summary-list"><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/wework?r=US&amp;IR=T&amp;page=1">WeWork</a> has a cultish reputation. </li><li>This shone through in a Bloomberg Businessweek interview on Wednesday with CEO Adam Neumann, who cofounded the company in 2010.</li><li>Neumann speaks in almost spiritual terms about WeWork, its relationship with SoftBank, and his superpower, which he says is "change."</li></ul><ul class="summary-list"><li><strong><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/?hprecirc-bullet">Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.</a></strong></li></ul><p>WeWork is not your average real estate company.</p><p>Over the years, it has earned somewhat cultish reputation thanks to it founders' emphasis on its community, or the so-called "We Generation," which it keeps loyal with its annual three-day summer camp festivals and offices stocked with beer kegs, among other things.</p><p>This mentality shone through in a <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2019-05-15/wework-wants-to-be-its-own-landlord-it-also-wants-2-8-billion">Bloomberg Businessweek interview</a> on Wednesday with WeWork CEO Adam Neumann. He cofounded the firm Miguel McKelvey and his wife Rebekah Paltrow Neumann (a cousin of Gwyneth Paltrow), and is known for his hyper-energetic and idiosyncratic leadership style.</p><p>Bloomberg observes that Neumann is served a bowl of super oats with what he calls "amazing qualities" midway through the interview, his cofounders go around wearing shirts with slogans like "High on We," and WeWork's walls are adorned with signs telling tenants to "Hustle Harder."</p><p>Bloomberg prodded Neumann around recent events related to funding; WeWork did not receive the full $16 billion investment it was expecting from investor Softbank earlier this year, bagging just $1.9 billion instead.</p><p>Despite this, Neumann said their relationship was still, "very, very, very, very positive." In fact, Neumann views this as an enlightening moment. "Let's not build a company just for the sake of revenue," he told Bloomberg. "Part of creating value is not maximizing."</p><p>Toward the end of the piece, Neumann asks Bloomberg journalist Ellen Huet what her superpower is, he then responded with his own. "A place where we're redefining success measured by personal fulfillment, not just the bottom line. Community is our catalyst."</p><p>While some industry experts say this image has helped the company to achieve substantial growth in a relatively short period of time - it has opened 425 office locations in 36 countries and become Manhattan's biggest tenant, according to Bloomberg - it's also <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wework-pre-ipo-financials-cashflow-2019-5?r=US&amp;IR=T">haemorrhaging cash</a>.</p><p>"If you had positioned this as a real-estate company, it wouldn't be worth this," Barry Sternlicht, who runs Starwood Capital Group LLC, told The Wall Street Journal in 2017. 'My superpower is change': The cult of WeWork was laid bare in a revealing interview with CEO Adam Neumann

<p><strong><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Melia Robinson/Business Insider</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></strong></p><ul><li><strong>The Plant Based Foods Association and Upton's Naturals Co., a vegan meat maker, sued Mississippi's governor and commissioner of agriculture and commerce in federal court on Monday. </strong></li><li><strong>The lawsuit alleges that a labeling law effective July 1 in Mississippi violates the First Amendment right to free speech.</strong></li><li><strong>The labeling law restricts companies from using descriptors such as "meatless meatballs", "hot dogs", "jerky", and even "veggie burgers."</strong></li><li><strong><a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/">Read more on Markets Insider. </a></strong></li></ul><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The fight over what to call plant-based meat alternatives is ramping up. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">On Monday, the Plant Based Foods Association and Upton's Naturals Co., a Chicago-based vegan meat maker, sued Mississippi's governor and commissioner of agriculture and commerce in federal court. They allege labeling restrictions in the state that keep them from using descriptors such as "meatless meatballs", "hot dogs", "jerky", and even "veggie burgers" violate their First Amendment right to free speech. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Mississippi's labeling law went into effect July 1. It could make using the word "meat" or any terminology associated with meat to describe plant-based foods subject to criminal penalties. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"It creates a logistical nightmare and huge cost," Michele Simon, the executive director of the Plant Based Foods Association, a trade group, told Markets Insider in an interview. For companies such as Upton's Naturals, which clearly marks its products as "100% Vegan," it could mean that to sell in Mississippi, it would have to print new region-specific labels. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In a statement, the Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce said it was obliged to enforce the law. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"It is unfortunate the plaintiffs have resorted to litigation without reviewing our proposed rules, or offering comments to those proposed rules," said Commissioner Andy Gipson in a <a href="https://twitter.com/CommAndyGipson/status/1146079344126832641">statement</a> on Twitter. "A food product made of insect-protein should not be deceptively labeled as beef. Someone looking to purchase tofu should not be tricked into buying lab-grown animal protein. Words mean something." </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Other states including Arkansas, Louisiana, and Wyoming have passed similar laws about what can be labeled meat.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"> The animal protein industry isn't the only one protected by states - in Wisconsin, the dairy lobby has campaigned heavily against alternative dairy products and how such products are labeled. The dairy industry contends that words such as "butter" and "milk" don't belong on vegan products,</span><a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-06-17/big-dair-goes-to-war-on-substitutes-starting-with-vegan-butter"><span style="font-weight: 400;"> Bloomberg reported.</span></a></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Plant Based Foods Association has also fought against big dairy. The group has 147 company members, according to its website, including </span><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/impossible-foods"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Impossible Foods</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, </span><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/beyond-meat"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Beyond Meat,</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> Oatly, Morningstar Farms, and Tofurky. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The stakes are high for plant-based alternative companies, many of which are privately held. Analysts have said that the plant-based meat alternatives industry, which is currently worth an estimated $14 billion, </span><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/meat-substitutes-impossible-foods-beyond-meat-sales-skyrocket-2019-5?utm_source=markets&amp;utm_medium=ingest?utm_source=markets&amp;utm_medium=ingest?utm_source=markets&amp;utm_medium=ingest&amp;_ga=2.41224994.1428792261.1562155306-848481101.1559660859"><span style="font-weight: 400;">could grow to $140 billion in the next ten years.</span></a> <span style="font-weight: 400;">Recently, the popularity of Beyond Meat's blockbuster IPO - it's now trading up more than 500% - has shown that there is demand for such products on the market and in kitchens across the US.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">But much of that growth relies on converting meat eaters to try the product, and hopefully swap it for at least some of their animal-protein consumption. It's a trend that has grown lately as even companies such as Tyson Foods launched </span><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tyson-challenges-beyond-meat-with-plant-based-product-2019-6"><span style="font-weight: 400;">plant-based meat alternative products as well as blended products</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> which contain both meat and vegetables. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"In the past these types of products have been aimed at a niche audience," Simon said. "But what's really exciting about what's happening right now is that these products are broadening their scope, audience, by going mainstream."</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">This shift means companies need to be able to clearly convey the nature of the product. But it may be an uphill battle - overall meat consumption has increased in the US and abroad. Not being able to tell consumers what to expect from plant-based products is worrying to companies like Upton's Naturals. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If a company has a vegan product that is designed to remind the consumer of bacon but they can't use the word bacon, "what words are they going to use?" said Simon. The company will now focus on providing "marketing intelligence" for its clients.</p>
<p>Compass was one of Facebook's "preferred marketing developers" (PMDs). The exit ought to scare some of them. Venkatachari tells us that his company saw only "diminishing margins" in the Facebook ad business:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">We decided to shift focus away from Social Ads, and towards leveraging rich insights for Marketing. That shift started several months ago, when we dropped the Managed Ads business, and we finally exited the rest of the Ads business recently.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">Rationale: While the spend on social ads is growing and will continue to grow rapidly, the intermediaries (i.e. PMDs) are not structurally positioned to get attractive returns. Facebook (and Twitter next) will continue to get an increasing share of the value, leaving intermediaries with diminishing margins. As a player with marquee customers, we got a ringside view of this trajectory. Insights and Marketing Intelligence, on the other hand, is an attractive, growing market</p>
<p>Compass's clients included Honey Bunches of Oats and Febreze. It was one of the smaller Facebook PMDs, with 25 employees. But it had taken $12 million in venture capital investment prior to its change in direction.</p>
<p>There are about 300 preferred marketing developers in the Facebook ecosystem. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-pmd-email-tells-new-advertisers-no-pay-no-play-2013-2">Facebook recently shifted policy</a> to incentivize more of them to get into the ad placement business - the very line of work Compass says it cannot make money at.</p>
<p>Those 300 partners all perform one (or more) of four functions on Facebook: Placing ads for clients, running clients' Facebook pages, analytics and app creation. With so many companies competing to serve advertisers on just four tasks, it's unsurprising that not every company is going to find the margins they want.</p>
<p>We're not saying all Facebook PMDs have the same problems. Many of them, obviously, have growing books of business. But there have been some other signals recently that not everyone placing ads on Facebook will come out ahead.</p>
<p>Another Facebook PMD,  <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/syncapse-bankruptcy-documents-lay-bare-the-financials-of-marketing-on-facebook-2013-7">Syncapse, recently went bankrupt</a>.</p>
<p>And Marin software, which offers a range of adtech services including social media marketing on Facebook, <a href="http://www.crunchbase.com/company/marin-software">raised less money in its recent IPO</a> than the total its investors put into it. (To be fair to <a href="http://investor.marinsoftware.com/press-release/featured/marin-software-announces-second-quarter-2013-financial-results">Marin, its revenue is growing robustly</a> even though it is not profitable.)</p>
