"This comes up all the time and, I think, Damon and I have been very consistent and forthright on this topic. We told the story that we wanted to tell."Over six seasons, "Lost" followed a group of survivors of Oceanic flight 815 who crash landed on an island. As they tried to go back home (and then get back to the island), it was consistently a top-rated show on ABC.<div type="image" title="lost jack" height="616" width="1111" msid="78598495" hostid="261"></div>To this day fans love rewatching the series and discussing the series' few unsolved mysteries — including one Cuse and Lindelof said they'll never answer about the identity of those people on the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iGQO6hrltBg">season five outrigger</a>.While they have no interest in rebooting "Lost" or exploring any spinoffs, Lindelof said he would be supportive of anyone who pitched a good idea. "If somebody else comes along who has a great idea to do something set in the 'Lost' universe and sells that to The Walt Disney Company, they will have our blessings to do that," Cuse said. "We see no reason to do it. It doesn't feel like there's anything that we have left to say that's worth saying. We did it."Lindelof said Disney has never come to him with any other show pitches since the show wrapped up in 2010. He pointed out that they were able to do something quite rare with the ABC series as opposed to now "where shows regularly end or are finite or are limited series or '<a href="https://www.insider.com/netflix-tv-shows-cancelled-ending-2020-9">we're only going to do three seasons of this thing or whatever.'</a>""In 2004, which is when 'Lost' started, and, certainly, in 2007 when we announced that it was going to end and it still was very highly rated, everyone said to us, 'They're never going to let you end this thing.'" Lindelof said."For us to put so much emotional energy into getting the ending and then all the creative energy in seasons four, five, and six of doing the ending the best we could, to do the ending on our own terms, the way that we wanted to, it really does feel like then to turn around even 20 years later and say, 'Well, that wasn't the ending,' It was just 'an ending,' it feels wrong on every level, but that's because it was our ending," he continued. Lindelof says, despite that, he agrees with Cuse wholeheartedly about welcoming new ideas into the "Lost" universe. "Enough time has passed for an entire generation of people who grew up watching 'Lost' to now say, 'Hey, I'm a writer,' you know, or 'I've got to take on this thing,'" Lindelof said. "I would love to see a new generation of storytellers take on the 'X Files' or even 'Twin Peaks' or 'Lost.'" Director Jason Reitman, his father (original "Ghostbusters" director) Ivan Reitman, and a number of cast members, including Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, and Mckenna Grace, treated fans to a special screening of the upcoming film Friday night at the Javits Center in New York City.Reitman said though he loves streaming, and said that it helped get him, like many others, get through the pandemic, that he loves movies and knew the fans who came out Friday in person - some who were in Ghostbusters costumes - did, too. "We wanted to make a <keyword id="11897475" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="movie" source="Orion">movie</keyword> to be enjoyed with a huge audience with popcorn on a big screen, with incredible sound, where you're experiencing it the way you experienced the movie in '84," Reitman said."I'm thrilled to be at Sony, which is the studio most dedicated to theatrical films," Reitman added to a round of applause. Fans thought that they were about to see a few clips from the upcoming release, which had been delayed multiple times since its original July 2020 date. Instead, Reitman told them there was a change of plans."It's been a while since we started making this film and you all are the most patient fans on Earth. "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" is easily one of the best films we've screened this year (I'd argue it's more enjoyable than Marvel's great "Shang-Chi" and the very good "Bond" film out right now.).I won't say much about the film otherwise. Reitman's right. The film should be experienced with as few spoilers as possible. I will say that the Comic Con crowd cheered and clapped throughout the film during many specific moments. This was one of the rare times since 2019 that I watched a film screening with a large group of fans (the others were "Venom 2" and "Fast 9"). This screening produced the largest reactions of the three.At the film's end, many gave the film a standing ovation.<div type="image" title="Ghostbusters Afterlife NYCC 2021" height="3024" width="4032" msid="86885710" hostid="261"></div>"Afterlife" is nostalgia done right while introducing the universe to a new generation who may not be familiar with the original franchise. "It's been a really interesting and fun creative challenge for us on the writing side to try to do some deep dives into some of our characters." Kang added, that it's not because they didn't want to have her there. "At the time that we had to lock these episodes, her schedule was still up in the air," Kang continued. "We have an episode that should be really cool for people coming up afterwards. We have epidemiologist from the Pentagon during the SARS scare [as] our onset doctor now."Reedus added that it's weird to be back filming in Georgia during the fall since they're usually filming the series during some of the hottest months of the year.During NYCC's panel, Kang said it took production a few months to get everything up and running to film safely. "Everybody will have masks and face shields and they've done the trailers differently," Kang said. "There's sanitation stations everywhere. There's UV lights and air scrubbers and things on the stages. There's a former military infectious diseases specialist who's our health and safety supervisor.""It's an abundance of caution in every way," Kang added. "We've had to think a lot about, 'How do we tell the story so they're satisfying and dive into character and give a little bit of adventure, but being really creative about how many people we can have in a scene. How can we show things while keeping people a little bit distant wherever we can? It's forced us to really think outside of the box because we've really had a box around us in terms of how to do it safely."Until the flagship show returns, you'll have to settle for the rest of "TWD" universe. If you've been feeling like you're watching the same stories again and again on television lately, it's not just you.It's hard not to see double. In the past six months, there have been revivals of intellectual properties like "Avatar: The Last Airbender," "Percy Jackson," "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World," "One Piece," and "One Day" on streaming services. With the exception of "One Piece," the anime adaptation of which has been in production since 1999, all of these shows are based on novels or television series that were first adapted as films in the 2010s.By the numbers, many of these twice-retread adaptations — which generally have taken the form of eight-episode TV shows released in the 2020s — are often successful. Netflix's<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/one-piece-season-two-live-action-release-2023-9"> "One Piece" was picked up for a second season</a>. "Percy Jackson" was also renewed and brought in<a target="_blank" href="https://deadline.com/2024/01/percy-jackson-and-the-olympians-viewership-reacher-young-sheldon-nielsen-1235805328/"> big viewership numbers for Disney+</a>. And on March 6, Netflix <a target="_blank" href="https://www.netflix.com/tudum/articles/avatar-the-last-airbender-season-2">picked up "Avatar: The Last Airbender"</a> for a second and a third season barely two weeks after its premiere, presumably allowing it to adapt the full story told in the cartoon series.But while the numbers are there, the substance doesn't necessarily follow. For every under-the-radar critical hit like Netflix's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/scott-pilgrim-anime-differences-netflix-better-2023-11">"Scott Pilgrim Takes Off"</a> or big-budget success story like "One Piece," there's another middling adaptation-of-an-adaptation that's inexplicably staying afloat despite glaring creative problems."Percy Jackson" was a hit for Disney+. Or Lionsgate Television's upcoming "Twilight" television series, which <a target="_blank" href="https://deadline.com/2024/03/john-wick-twilight-tv-series-lionsgate-television-animated-1235846773/">Deadline</a> reported will be animated. The right IP, the logic goes, is simply too big to fail. But is that really true?<h2>Familiar IP is comforting to viewers — and risk-averse executives</h2>Even as we <a target="_blank" href="https://slate.com/culture/2023/03/peak-tv-over-golden-age-hbo-streaming.html">move out of the "Peak TV" era</a>, an oversaturated market can make falling back on familiar properties appealing.Parrot Analytics director of strategy Julia Alexander told Business Insider that since franchises already have dedicated fan bases, they can provide decision-makers with a false sense of security. The idea is that a series based on familiar, beloved IP stands a better chance at capturing part of the consumer pie than something original. Co-showrunner Jon Steinberg told BI and other reporters at a New York Comic Con 2023 roundtable ahead of the show's premiere that the show was intentionally supposed to speak to both parents and kids."As an adult, I think we wanted to make sure that if you're sitting there with your kid watching it, it's speaking to you in a language that your kid might not have any awareness is even being spoken, but it's loud and clear, and its jokes work a different way, and its emotional setups work a different way," Steinberg said.Shifting the medium or tone of a story also has the potential to bring it to a larger audience, if it can also balance that with catering to longtime fans. Hopefully, that doesn't come at the expense of what drew in those who originally loved the story.<h2>Television gives more space to expand on a beloved story</h2>After lackluster film adaptations of "Avatar" and "Percy Jackson" in the 2010s (in the case of "Avatar," lackluster is putting it mildly — the 2010 M. Night Shyamalan film holds an appalling <a target="_blank" href="https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/last_airbender">5% on Rotten Tomatoes</a>) trying again on television can appeal to creators because it provides the space to tell the story "right" this time.For Rick Riordan, the author of the "Percy Jackson" novels, and his wife Becky, who is also an executive producer on the television series, it was also an opportunity to adapt the series on their terms. (The Riordans were <a target="_blank" href="https://rickriordan.com/2018/11/memories-from-my-tv-movie-experience/">not involved in the 2010 films</a>, and have publicly expressed their dislike for some of the changes the films made.)"From the very earliest conversations we had with Fox and with Disney, we were pretty adamant that television was the right format," the writer told Business Insider. After you watch the live-action "Avatar," you can dive back into all three seasons of the original series, or the sequel series "The Legend of Korra" (I did both). That kind of thinking explains why Netflix is trying to become the home of all things "One Piece" after the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/tv/news/netflix-one-piece-live-action-series-b2407756.html">success of its live-action adaptation</a>. The platform will be streaming the new season of the anime, adding existing seasons to its catalog, and even producing <a target="_blank" href="https://www.netflix.com/tudum/articles/the-one-piece-release-date">its own original, separate anime adaptation</a> of Eiichiro Oda's manga. While certain failures did lead to positive changes in the re-remakes — Netflix's live-action "Avatar" features an Asian and Indigenous cast after <a target="_blank" href="https://www.polygon.com/24079373/avatar-last-airbender-live-action-racebending">whitewashing in the 2010 film</a>, for example — both shows feel plagued by warring impulses to deliver on fans' expectations for redemption while also producing something new."Scott Pilgrim Takes Off" and "One Piece" don't have the same problem.Edgar Wright's "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World," while a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.boxofficemojo.com/release/rl2674427393/">box-office flop</a>, is a cult classic and genuinely good movie. The "One Piece" anime, like Oda's original manga, is beloved in its own right and will celebrate its 25th anniversary this year. When it comes to rebooting these properties in a new medium, there's nothing to salvage, because previous versions weren't bad — and while the showrunners had the pressure of living up to something good, they weren't tied up in something to beat. (It's worth noting that both Bryan Lee O'Malley, the author of the "Scott Pilgrim" comics, and Eiichiro Oda, the author of "One Piece," were involved in each respective adaptation).Netflix's "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off," the lowest-profile show from this cohort, was good because it had the courage to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/scott-pilgrim-anime-differences-netflix-better-2023-11">blow up its original story</a>. An eight-episode anime series produced by acclaimed Japanese studio Science Saru, it's a transformative take on O'Malley's original comics that embraces the weirdness that made the source material so good in the first place, without trying to be too precious about preserving what's on the page. Its action sequences sing in animation, and the show's writing makes good use of the longer runtime by actually developing characters rather than recreating prior setpieces or plotlines. The series was successful not just because it embraced the inherent silliness of the manga, but because that silliness just works so damn well on-screen, infused into a pretty adept serialized structure that covered the franchise's arc.This isn't to say that these showrunners don't feel trepidation to iterate on something successful. "One Piece" co-showrunner Matt Owens told <a target="_blank" href="https://deadline.com/2023/10/one-piece-showrunner-matt-owens-season-2-interview-jamie-lee-curtis-1235563095/">Deadline</a> that he knew the live-action series would have to contend with fans' adoration for the original series, as well as apprehension about live-action anime adaptations in general."I didn't sleep for two days before release because I didn't know what to expect with this labor of love that has been such a big part of my life," Owens told Deadline. But when he began to spitball ideas for a new series with co-showrunner BenDavid Grabinski, things started to click."We didn't make any choices that were just for the hell of it," Grabinski told BI at NYCC. "There were emotional reasons why we were doing this version of the story. There were narrative reasons, and we just felt very strongly that this was the most satisfying, and surprising, and entertaining thing we could do."Ultimately, if Hollywood is determined to keep making these re-remakes, future showrunners would do well to take note. And for the executives greenlighting them, maybe redemption isn't the right path — it's much more effective to create something new with familiar stories than try to rectify the mistakes of the past.

On season four, episode eight, we see a group of the undead close in on Madison at the stadium where she and her family were living. It was absolutely bizarre.That's why it was great to see the name pop up on the season 11 premiere. Princess, Yumiko, Ezekiel wouldn't have recognized Heath's name. It's tough to say whether or not Eugene would have recalled him if he noticed the scrap of paper, but Eugene does seem to have a pretty stellar memory. (The guy recalled every zip code he ever lived at without blinking to the Commonwealth auditors.)It would have been so, so satisfying for Aaron to have been at the Commonwealth and to have seen that little scrap of paper with Heath's name on it to tie up a loose end on the show. Who's to say that still doesn't happen?<h2>We know Heath is still likely out there. Showrunner Angela Kang told us Heath was taken by the CRM years ago.</h2><div type="image" title="jadis anne the walking dead 905" height="2000" width="3000" msid="85551725" hostid="261"></div>In 2018, Insider asked Kang whether or not Heath was also taken by the helicopter which whisked Rick away and if Anne traded him to the CRM for supplies."That was kind of the intention that we had in the back of our heads this whole time," Kang <a href="https://www.insider.com/walking-dead-what-happened-to-heath-2018-11">told Insider of whether or not Anne traded Heath to the helicopter people</a>. A narrow beachfront street in the Long Island enclave has even been nicknamed <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hamptons-mansions-billionaire-lane-photos-celebrities-ceos-executives-2020-7">"Billionaire Lane"</a> for its bevy of ultra-wealthy residents, and one Hamptons ZIP code has been ranked the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/most-expensive-zip-in-the-hamptons-tour-sagaponack-2018-8">most expensive ZIP code on the East Coast</a> for the last two years.Every summer, the Hamptons are set abuzz as these city dwellers flock to their summer homes or vacation rentals. Parties at private estates and ritzy <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stephen-ross-hamptons-fundraiser-trump-campaign-raises-millions-2019-8">political fundraisers at billionaires' homes</a> are a staple of the social scene.But this year, as the ultrawealthy came for the Hamptons, so did new levels of social backlash.Nelson Schwartz, author of "<a href="https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/561374/the-velvet-rope-economy-by-nelson-d-schwartz/">The Velvet Rope Economy</a>" and an economics reporter for The New York Times, said the pandemic has made the ever-expanding divide in the Hamptons even more apparent. "The Hamptons, to me, are ground zero for class differences playing out in the pandemic," Schwartz told Business Insider.<h2>The Hamptons have been getting bougier in summer 2020</h2>While the Hamptons have long been the preferred vacation spot for wealthy New Yorkers, summer of 2020 saw it <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/thelife/news/how-the-hamptons-got-even-bougier-in-summer-2020/articleshow/77209973.cms">become even bougier,</a> as Business Insider's Dominic Madori-Davis first reported.The moneyed scene typically arrives over Memorial Day weekend in May, but this year it showed up in March as affluent New Yorkers fled the city because of the coronavirus. At least 420,000 <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/where-wealthy-nyc-residents-went-during-coronavirus-outbreak-nyt-report-2020-5">New Yorkers left the city</a> between March 1 and May 1, primarily from wealthy Manhattan neighborhoods. Many of them went to the Hamptons, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wealthy-pay-hundreds-for-mail-to-be-delivered-to-hamptons-2020-4">paying limo drivers to deliver mail</a> to their second homes.It didn't take long for the businesses that serve this wealthy clientele to follow them out to the East End, Madori-Davis wrote.Luxury brands Bergdorf Goodman and Saks started same-day delivery service to the Hamptons. Carbone, the exclusive Michelin-starred Manhattan restaurant known for its $32 spicy rigatoni, launched both a Hamptons pickup service and a pop-up restaurant. Major New York City art galleries opened up Hamptons outposts.<div type="image" title="hamptons art exhibition event party" height="1814" width="2419" msid="77447860" hostid="261"></div>To cater to the affluent <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/new-yorkers-who-fled-to-hamptons-amid-coronavirus-look-at-enrolling-11589972255">families who were considering staying</a> in the Hamptons past the summer season, Avenues, an ultra-exclusive Manhattan private school, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nyc-private-school-opening-hamptons-avenues-2020-5">opened a location</a> in East Hampton — with $48,000 a year tuition.<h2>As the Hamptons' exclusivity factor surged, so did the backlash</h2>While the wealthy may have fled to the Hamptons to escape a virus, they found an unexpected obstacle to their quiet isolation: social revolt.It didn't happen right away. In April and May, as the coronavirus ravaged New York City, wealthy Hamptonites stayed sequestered in their mansions, ordering takeout from Nick &amp; Toni's and picking up seafood at Citarella's.But a wave of social backlash eventually made its way to the Hamptons. <a href="https://www.middletownpress.com/middletown/article/Demonstration-in-East-Hampton-draws-hundreds-of-15339063.php">Black Lives Matter protests in June</a> were followed by anti-billionaire protests in July. On July 1, <a href="https://pagesix.com/2020/07/01/hamptons-billionaires-car-caravan-protest-targets-east-end-vacation-homes/">more than 300 people showed up</a> outside <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bloomberg-hamptons-house-photos-2011-7">Mike Bloomberg's $20 million Southampton mansion</a> to demand a <keyword id="6383453" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="wealth">wealth</keyword> tax for New York's richest residents. They carried plastic pitchforks and chanted "tax the rich, not the poor."The protesters also stopped by the homes of real-estate developer Stephen Ross and Steven Schwarzman, CEO of private equity firm Blackstone. Some Hamptons homeowners <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rich-hamptonites-hiring-guards-to-protect-them-from-protesters-2020-7">hired armed guards</a> in fear of the protesters. <div type="image" title="hamptons protest mike bloomberg" height="1661" width="2214" msid="77447862" hostid="261"></div>Alicé Nascimento is the director of policy and research for New York Communities for Change (NYCC), one of the non-profits involved in organizing the protests. She told Business Insider that activists want to pressure New York Governor <keyword id="196530" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Andrew-Cuomo">Andrew Cuomo</keyword> to raise taxes on New York's richest residents, many of whom — including Ross —<a href="https://public-accountability.org/report/billionaires-have-fueled-andrew-cuomos-political-career/"> have donated to his campaign</a>. Cuomo recently <a href="https://buffalonews.com/news/state-and-regional/govt-and-politics/cuomo-dismisses-calls-to-raise-taxes-on-new-yorks-wealthiest-residents/article_f813df9c-d1cd-11ea-aaaa-3f9f69697d43.html">shot down the idea</a> and has been warning of <a href="https://www.silive.com/coronavirus/2020/07/cuomo-warns-of-increased-mta-fares-tolls-without-federal-aid.html">transit fare hikes</a> and <a href="https://brooklyneagle.com/articles/2020/08/03/opposing-tax-hikes-for-ultra-wealthy-cuomo-eyes-cuts-to-schools-hospitals/">cutting funding to public schools and hospitals</a>.Nascimento says the first protest in July was mainly people coming from New York City, but then local Hamptons community groups and residents started showing up."It's really local folks who aren't what we traditionally think of [as] people who live in the Hamptons, Nascimento said. "The Hamptons has this stratosphere of extremely wealthy people — like the richest people in the world — and also the ones that are middle class that serve them.At one of the recent protests, Nascimento said, demonstrators had trouble finding the home of billionaire investor and Cuomo donor Daniel Loeb because Hamptons estates are so secluded."Billionaires are experts in social distancing," Nascimento told The New York Post last month. She told Business Insider: "There's a reason why they choose to live out there ... It's hard to find, but that's intentional. It's not an accident."<h2>The Hamptons have long been a tale of economic disparity</h2>While a pandemic and recession may have brought it to the forefront, economic disparity in the Hamptons is nothing new."There's long been a divide between the people who come out to the Hamptons for the summer and those who are out there year round, who live there and work there as teachers, as cops, and work in the restaurants," Schwartz said.This divide traces back to the early days of British colonization of the Hamptons. The early settlers in East Hampton, one of the two main townships on the East End, <a href="https://www.easthamptonvillage.org/DocumentCenter/View/131/History-of-the-Village-of-East-Hampton-PDF?bidId=">divided up the land</a> and allotted themselves each large parcels, East Hampton's historic services director, Bob Hefner, wrote on the town's official website. They shared the resources of the undivided land and created the laws that governed the village.New residents of the town were given small plots of land and couldn't share the resources of the undivided land, according to Hefner. That left, as Hefner wrote, a small group of owners with the prime land within East Hampton, while "the tradesmen, laborers, subsistence farmers, fishermen, and at a later date freed slaves and Montauk Indians, lived on small lots on less desirable land outside the [village]."In more recent years, similar patterns have played out. The lifestyles of Hamptons billionaires are supported by an "<a href="https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2015/aug/14/hamptons-super-rich-inequality">army of local people and recent immigrants</a>" who can't afford to live "south of the highway" like their ultra-wealthy clientele, as Rupert Neate reported for the Guardian in 2015."South of the highway" refers to an area <a href="https://outeast.com/stories/south-of-the-highway-hamptons-what-does-it-mean/">south of the Montauk Highway</a> — which runs from Queens through the Hamptons all the way out to Montauk — where you'll find the most prestigious villages and multimillion-dollar beachfront homes.<h2>A microcosm of the tensions playing out in the US during the pandemic</h2>Inequality has always existed in the Hamptons, but it's never been more plainly evident than during the pandemic. "I think it kind of lays bare the class divisions in our society," Schwartz told Business Insider. "A lot of people have withdrawn from the city and from society and gone to their house and pulled up the drawbridge and are kind of isolated in their house. They're going to wait this thing out, which is a privilege the rest of us don't have."To be sure, the Hamptons are not the only wealthy enclave across the US seeing wealth disparities playing out. A similar story is unfolding in areas like <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/billionaire-wilderness-author-inequality-teton-county-wyoming-2020-8">Teton County</a>, the scene of the greatest wealth disparity in the US, and San Francisco, where service-industry workers are losing their jobs while Silicon Valley tech workers get cash bonuses to upgrade their home offices. The pandemic led to a burgeoning backlash against the wealthy all over the world as people stuck at home during lockdown got sick of seeing <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/david-geffen-deletes-instagram-after-self-isolating-yacht-post-2020-3">billionaires self-isolating on their superyachts</a> and <a href="https://www.insider.com/gal-gadot-imagine-celebrities-singing-coronavirus-negative-reactions-video-2020-3">singing "Imagine" instead of donating</a> to coronavirus relief. In fact, in many ways, the conflict playing out in the Hamptons mirrors what's happening on a national scale. "I think it's a microcosm with what happens in our societies where people take private planes, they go to private schools, they have food delivered to their house instead of going to the supermarket — if you can afford to do those things," Schwartz said.Between the start of the pandemic and early June, more than 42 million people lost their jobs, yet <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/billionaires-got-565-billion-richer-during-the-coronavirus-pandemic-2020-6">America's billionaires got 20% richer</a>, growing their cumulative wealth by $565 billion, according to a recent <a href="https://ips-dc.org/billionaire-bonanza-2020/">report from the Institute for Policy Studies.</a>Nascimento said the <a href="https://makebillionairespay.info/">campaign to raise taxes on the ultra-wealthy</a> will continue "as long as billionaires are gouging public resources and subsidies without paying what they owe to the people."Next week, activists are heading to Albany to protest outside Gov. Cuomo's mansion. And while a date isn't yet set for the next protest in the Hamptons, the billionaire playground likely hasn't seen the last of the protesters."They should be expecting to see more of us," Nascimento said.
