Citi analyst Atif Malik said early indications suggest the features are strong enough to drive a big upgrade cycle for the next-generation iPhones."Developer feedback on iOS18 beta AI features including the recently launched new photo feature to remove unwanted objects points to AI as a compelling upgrade for iPhone refresh next year," Malik said.Apple is expected to unveil its iPhone 16 lineup at <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apples-iphone-16-heres-what-we-know-ai-battery-i2024-7">a September 9 event called "It's Glowtime."</a>Along with on-device AI capabilities, the iPhone 16 family is expected to include A18 chips with an enhanced neural engine, improved cameras and microphones, and better battery life.All of those hardware upgrades should prove essential in enabling a new generation of AI-capable software features."Apple's Sep event is generally all about hardware updates, but we believe the company will put a lot of focus on how the hardware updates for the iPhone 16 family can better support its Apple Intelligence features that is expected to roll out officially later in the fall," Malik explained.While the iPhone 16 will kick off Apple's AI-era, it's really the 2025 release of the iPhone 17 that will drive a coming sales boom."As AI features are going to be released gradually over the next year and it takes time for developers to develop apps and for Apple to win customers recognition, we expect major refresh on iPhone 17 next year," Malik said.Malik estimates Apple will sell 85 million iPhone 16 units in 2024 and 92 million iPhone 17 units in 2025. As a whole, Malik expects Apple to sell 228 million total iPhone units in 2024 and 241 million iPhone units in 2025."We view Apple as in the best position to make it possible given its leading position in the premium smartphone market and seamless integration of software and hardware," Malik said of consumers' adoption of AI technologies.Malik rates Apple at a "Buy" with a $255 price target, representing potential upside of 13% from Wednesday's close.

To put it simply, it's a big one.The British company, which designs chips used in most smartphones, is looking to raise up to $4.87 billion with a valuation as high as $52 billion. Even if it slightly misses those numbers, it'll still be the largest public debut in the US since <a style="text-decoration: underline;" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/rivian-stock-price-ipo-debut-valuation-100-billion-ford-gm-2021-11">Rivian's IPO</a> in late 2021.But this isn't your run-of-the-mill large IPO. The market for companies going public has been all but dead since 2022. The lack of public offerings since March of last year is the worst IPO drought since 2009, according to Bloomberg data.However, the crux of the issue with IPOs dates back well before 2022. As is often the case, things took a turn at the onset of the pandemic. When the market collapsed in March 2020, plans to go public were put on hold. The stock market recovered in record time, but then something else held up IPOs: VC money. Rich with cash, venture investors were happy to keep pouring money into startups. The public markets suddenly didn't seem appealing when a startup could wait six months for its valuation to double from another round of funding. That formula suited startups well until 2022, when cracks started to show in the market. Cash wasn't cheap anymore — thanks a lot, Fed! — which meant no more eye-popping funding rounds. Meanwhile, IPOs weren't an option since public investors wouldn't support the puffed-up valuations startups were clinging to.Which brings us to Arm's IPO. A successful public debut, especially such a large one, would open up the floodgates for other companies on the fence about an IPO. Cleaning out the backlog of companies waiting to go public over the past three-plus years would also have some significant knock-on effects. More IPOs mean VCs get to cash out those early-stage investments. That means more cash for future investments, something the startup community desperately needs, save for those in AI. Of course, there are no guarantees. Should Arm's IPO fall flat, it could spell disaster.
