Projects that took hours now take seconds.</li><li>It's the fundamental concept that, along with advanced semiconductors, has ushered in the AI boom.</li></ul>At a data science conference in midtown Manhattan in early November, the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nvidia-stock-nears-all-time-high-after-openai-funding-2024-10">Nvidia</a> exhibitor table had a constant swarm of eager people around it. They weren't angling for jobs or selfies. By and large, they were nerding out on the possibilities of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nvidia-swift-returns-on-ai-infrastructure-2024-8">parallel computing</a>.This is the fundamental concept that has catapulted Nvidia to become the world's most valuable company. And it was on show at the Pydata conference during a short demo conducted by Nvidia engineering manager Rick Ratzel.Nvidia makes graphics processing units, or <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gpu-rich-vs-gpu-poor-tech-companies-in-each-group-2023-8">GPUs</a>, which are computer chips that handle many tasks simultaneously. Hence the term parallel computing.The chips that most people know are central processing units, or <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/tech/what-is-a-cpu">CPUs</a>. You'll find them in your laptop handling a wide range of tasks. While quick and efficient, they generally handle these tasks one at a time in a prescribed order.GPUs are perfect for the massive data-crunching that's needed to build and run <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/new-players-startups-ai-inference-driving-prices-down-cheap-workload-2024-10">AI</a> models such as OpenAI's <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/openai-gpt4-ai-model-got-lazier-dumber-chatgpt-2023-7">GPT-4</a>, the computing brain behind ChatGPT.But before <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/everything-you-need-to-know-about-chat-gpt-2023-1">ChatGPT</a> burst on the scene in late 2022, parallel computing already had the potential to turbocharge the kind of data science that serves up relevant internet ads, optimizes supply-chain decisions, and attempts to detect online fraud.This is why Nvidia has had a long relationship with Pydata, a conference for developers who use the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/tech/what-is-python">Python coding language</a> to do data analysis.This year, Ratzel was there to introduce a new software tie-up with Nvidia for Python developers using common open-source data management tools.He started with a data set of movie reviews and numerical ratings. The aim was to make good recommendations. Ratzel had to match the taste of movie reviewers as closely as possible with a person's taste. The math to determine who had similar tastes wasn't that complicated. But the calculations involved large amounts of data on 330,000 users."It's giant," he said.Running the initial analysis took two hours on a traditional computer with a CPU, he said. A few tweaks got that down to one hour.Then Ratzel switched to a GPU and ran the analysis again. He got it done in less than two seconds. That speed comes from the parallel computing that the GPU enables.The concept has been around since the 1980s, but until relatively recently, the capability to actually perform parallel computing was hard to access. The <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsid">rise of GPU availability</a> through <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/aws-negotiating-huge-cloud-deal-supply-ibm-with-nvidia-gpus-2024-11">cloud providers</a> has made it easier for eager data scientists to complete their own projects in seconds rather than hours.With so much time saved, researchers can run many more experiments and take on a lot more projects."You can see how this changes how you work," Ratzel said. "Now I can try lots of things, do lots of experimenting, and I'm using the exact same data and the exact same code."The computations GPUs perform to enable generative AI are much more complex and voluminous than using existing, structured data to recommend movies based on common characteristics and preferences.This immense volume of computations is what has driven so much demand for Nvidia GPUs. And that, in turn, has made Nvidia's business so valuable to investors.

On the left side, you get the RJ-45 port, a USB Type-A port, a Mini DisplayPort, HDMI 2.1 port, a USB Type-C port and the audio jack. You also get the SD card slot. On the right side, you get two USB Type-A ports. It comes with a large 17.3-inch Quad HD+ IPS display with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels, a 240Hz refresh rate, 3 ms response time and 300 nits of brightness, which is good enough for playing indoors. The resolution and the high refresh rate make it a treat to game on the laptop. It offers crisp and smooth visuals, offering an immersive gaming experience. I played games like Red Dead Redemption 2, GTA V and Forza Horizon 5 on the laptop, with the device offering the best visuals in each game. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Performance" comment="subhead" text="Performance">Performance</cmsannotation> In addition to a large display, the OMEN 17 is also packed with the 13th gen Intel Core i9-13900HX processor coupled with the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 graphics. The laptop is available in a single variant with 32GB DDR5 5600 MHz RAM and a 1TB PCIe Gen4 NVMe M.2 SSD. I tested the laptop with several games, including Red Dead Redemption 2 and Forza Horizon 5. The laptop was able to handle these heavy games without any issues at the highest graphics. During extended gaming sessions, the laptop does heat up a little and the fan gets a bit noisy but the heat is manageable. In addition to this, I did not notice any drop in frames. Coming to the battery, the HP OMEN 17 is equipped with an 83Wh battery. As most gaming laptops, battery is not one of the strong points about the device and I recommend you to avoid gaming without plugging in the device. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Verdict" comment="subhead" text="Verdict">Verdict</cmsannotation> The HP OMEN 17 ticks a lot of the right boxes, including a vibrant display and powerful hardware which make it a great option for gamers. The lid features the backlit ROG logo outlined in white and a thin line that matches the angular aesthetics of the corner plate. To emphasize its gaming credentials, the laptop boasts a glass-like transparent RGB light strip underneath the front deck edge, extending to the sides. While there is a slight flex to the lid when opening the screen, the hinge mechanism holds everything securely without any concerning lateral movements or creaking sounds. The benefits of a pixel-dense, high refresh rate display are immediately noticeable. Although the viewing angles could be better, it is unlikely a major issue since most of your time will be spent looking at the screen head-on, where colour shifts are less noticeable. The IPS screen of the ROG Strix Scar 17 supports G-Sync and provides precise colour control with full coverage of the DCI-P3 and sRGB colour gamuts. Even when used outdoors under daylight, the need to readjust the screen angle is minimal due to the good brightness output, making it suitable for both work and play. However, in such conditions, colours may appear slightly muted. The laptop comes with 32GB DDR5 4800MHz RAM, which can be extended up to 64GB. For storage, it offers a 2TB M.2 PCIe 4.0 SSD, which can be upgraded to 4TB. I tested the laptop with several games, including Red Dead Redemption 2 and Forza Horizon 5. Both the games performed well and the laptops were able to handle them without any issues. The powerful hardware means that you will be able to run any game without even having to look at the system requirements. The games ran smoothly on the device, even at Quad HD resolution and I got high FPS at all times, even going above 350 in games like CS: GO. If you are someone who plays lighter games like Counter Strike: Global Offensive or PlayerUnkown’s Battlegrounds, the laptop is an overkill to handle such games. One of the issues gaming laptops usually face is they tend to heat up if you are playing heavier games for extended durations. This device however performs well even in this area. While it gets a bit noisy, the laptop is able to keep the temperatures under control. While the laptop is equipped with a 90Whr battery, the battery life is not one of the strongest points of the laptop. While gaming, I was able to get around 3 hours of battery life out of the device. Coming to the price, the laptop is aimed at enthusiasts who are willing to spend a huge amount of money to get a top-end laptop that is different from most other devices available in the market. At the end of the day, if you are willing to spend the big bucks, the Asus ROG Zephyrus Duo 16 is a great option for you. But also note that it’s not for everyone, only professional gamers, video editors or even coders can consider it but if you are a casual gamer, you can consider other Asus laptops like the new ROG Strix Scar 16 and Scar 18 that will cost you way lesser.
