This startup wants to use food as medicine for older people

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="76921" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Vinod-Khosla">Vinod Khosla</keyword> invested in <keyword id="2698623" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="HealthifyMe">HealthifyMe</keyword> after passing on the startup a few years ago.</li><li>The venture capitalist told Insider he was impressed by the health-and-fitness app's use of <keyword id="6355999" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="ai">AI</keyword>.</li><li><keyword id="130474" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Khosla-Ventures">Khosla Ventures</keyword> co-led HealthifyMe's $75 million funding round in July.</li></ul>Billionaire investor Vinod Khosla <a href="https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/healthifyme-raises-usd-75-million-in-series-c-round-led-by-leapfrog-and-khosla-ventures-301337598.html">recently backed</a> an Indian health-and-fitness app called HealthifyMe. The Khosla Ventures boss <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vinod-khosla-ventures-warren-buffett-investing-principles-market-bubbles-crashes-2021-7">told Insider in an exclusive interview</a> why he plowed millions of dollars into the startup after passing on it only a few years ago.HealthifyMe combines human coaches with artificial intelligence to provide nutritional advice, fitness classes, and diet-and-exercise plans to around 25 million users. Khosla Ventures was the co-lead investor in HealthifyMe's Series C funding round, which raised $75 million for the company last month. HealthifyMe has now raised over $100 million from investors including Unilever Ventures and Elm - an IT security company owned by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund.The startup's vast addressable market, coupled with its goal of helping people become healthier and more active, appealed to Khosla. "The larger the problem, the bigger the opportunity," he said. "Obesity and health are large problems.""Good for society, good for business," he said about HealthifyMe's mission.Khosla was most excited about the app harnessing AI to offer tailored nutritional advice based on a user's local cuisine and specific health conditions, such as diabetes or hypertension. Without that technology, the company would have to employ an army of nutritionists, making it much less scalable and affordable, he said.HealthifyMe's use of AI gives it a superior growth trajectory to a typical dieting company, while its app trumps conventional dieting and weight-loss books, because it can update its advice based on the latest scientific research, Khosla added.The venture capitalist told Insider he seeks to invest in talented founders with grand visions of disrupting large <keyword id="31671" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="markets">markets</keyword>. He pointed to Square CEO Jack Dorsey, who started his payments company with the goal of transforming small business. Fast, a San Francisco based software company, hired former Royal Marine commando and fitness trainer Phil McDougall full-time for the purpose in May. He had initially worked as a personal trainer for company CEO Domm Holland, according to the <a href="https://www.sfchronicle.com/tech/article/Movement-snacks-and-exercise-outreach-The-new-16370278.php?sid=5c4ab16e91d15c758418dca9&amp;utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_content=headlines&amp;utm_campaign=sfc_morningfixn=sfc_morningfix">San Francisco Chronicle</a>. According to the newspaper, McDougall's full-time day starts before dawn, and he offers employees advice on improving their sleep, running daily, plus exercise classes over Zoom as well as nutritional and mental health guidance. He's part of a wider 'people experience team' employed by the company that works to improve the benefits and culture at the company, based on feedback from employees, Peter Grassi, Fast's director of talent acquisition told the newspaper.Fast's San Francisco office is only open to vaccinated workers, and many are working remotely. As the company expands McDougall told the newspaper that he is hoping to add an assistant, and is also creating a prerecorded library of routines and talks in order to help more employees have access. <h2>A change in tech company perks </h2>The pandemic and the realignment of work means companies are rethinking employee perks more generally.With people in the office less - the most common favored hybrid model is two to three days - many are worried that <keyword id="1591413" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Company-culture">company culture</keyword> and cohesion will decline. It also means the typical perks of free coffee, afterwork drinks and office-focused rewards are less appealing to current and incoming talent. Some are turning their focus on ensuring that the home office is enjoyable in order to retain staff and look after their wellbeing. Dropbox, the file hosting firm, is offering <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-netherlands-worker-idUSKBN26S0N7">employees $7,000 a year allowance</a> for "home-office amenities" and other perks, including trainers, music lessons, and parental support. The Million Dollar Baby Co, which manufactures baby furniture <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/small-business-competing-to-hire-top-talent-2021-4">gives employees $700 'paid-vacation'</a> to put towards trips, on the caveat that they share what they learned with their colleagues.<a href="https://hbr.org/2021/04/the-pandemic-is-changing-employee-benefits">A survey</a> by Care.com - which helps families find carers - suggested that 98% of 500 HR leaders polled plan to offer at least one more employee benefit in the wake of the pandemic. In October, the Dutch government-backed research group NIBUD, which specializes in family finances, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-netherlands-worker-idUSKBN26S0N7">estimated that employers should reimburse home working employees as much as $2.40 a day</a> for coffee and toilet paper used at home.The pandemic offers a chance for employers to rethink their approach to perks, Andrew Mawson, founder of consultancy Advanced Workplace Associates, told Insider. "A company doesn't necessarily have to spend more, but instead be smarter about what they spend their money on to help make their 'benefits package' a differentiator in attracting and retaining talent."

A startup CEO hired his personal trainer full-time to give exercise classes and nutritional advice to staff over Zoom. It shows how remote work is rewriting company wellbeing.

<ul><li>SAS <keyword id="16293257" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="fat-to-slim" source="Orion">Fat to Slim</keyword> is a startup that claims to provide diet plans for <keyword id="6358794" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="weight-loss" source="Orion">weight loss</keyword> that require no exercise. </li><li>All the judges backed out from investing in the startup. </li><li>Sharks Namita Thapar and Anupam Mittal called it out for promoting unhealthy diets.</li></ul>Of the many pitches featured on season 1 of <keyword id="11924074" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="shark-tank-india" source="Orion">Shark Tank India</keyword>, Navel Fukai aka the Belly Button Shaper was one of the most bizarre products, which ended up being turned down by the entire panel. In Season 2, it was the turn of SAS Fat to Slim to be slammed by all the judges who variously called the startup’s no-exercise weight loss plan ‘dangerous’ and ‘gimmicky’. Founded by Shikha Aggarwal Sharma, SAS Fat to Slim is a Delhi-based startup that promotes weight loss with diet plans, and no exercise. As per Sharma, in weight loss, diet makes 80% of the difference, and exercise only contributes 20%. But shark Namita Thapar, executive director at Emcure Pharmaceuticals, called out the product for being nothing more than a gimmick. “How can you say ‘no exercise’? I fundamentally don’t agree with your theory. Let’s spread the message that weight loss happens by changing one’s lifestyle. Our country is turning into a diabetes capital, and blood pressure capital because people are doing such ‘gimmicky’ activities, and messing with their health. I’m sorry but when I hear such claims, I’m angry. I think we need to stop misleading the country,” remarked Thapar. Multiple reports echo Thapar’s sentiment. Doctors and other experts regularly <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/science/health/news/weight-gain-during-the-pandemic-is-increasing-the-incidence-of-pcos-in-women/articleshow/94202794.cms">recommend </a>a combination of exercise and diet control to combat weight gain and other lifestyle-related ailments. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="‘Your diet is akin to poison’" comment="subhead2" text="‘Your diet is akin to poison’">‘Your diet is akin to poison’</cmsannotation> Sharma shared how she believed a diet dominated by soups and salads—which need extra preparation time—was a luxury. But SAS Fat to Slim focused on easily available products, created by her own weight loss experience and knowledge of diet and nutrition. However, her claims were refuted by the sharks. Shaadi.com founder Anupam Mittal shared that he had studied a little about diabetes and the impact of sugar on human bodies, and slammed the sample diet that Sharma shared for an individual with diabetes. “According to macronutrients, you are recommending a diet of carbohydrates because you didn’t recommend protein till now. It’s akin to poison for a diabetic,” remarked Mittal. As per <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/science/health/news/one-in-every-six-indians-has-borderline-diabetes-says-report/articleshow/95497532.cms">reports</a>, one in every six Indians has diabetes. Chhavi Kohli, chief diabetes educator and nutritionist at Medanta the Medicity, Gurgaon, also shared with Business Insider India that “there is no special diet for diabetes; the whole idea is to nourish the body by taking various nutrients in the right proportion and right time.” Mittal also added that all bodies are different and while Sharma’s plan worked for her, it could prove to be dangerous for others. “You reduced weight with dedication and it’s remarkable. But now you’re packaging the same template that worked for you to other people. Vineeta Singh, co-founder of Sugar Cosmetics, also backed out adding that she didn’t align with Sharma’s core business proposition – of losing weight with no exercise Lenskart co-founder Peyush Bansal, meanwhile, backed out stating that he didn’t believe the startup needed any investments. “An investment will only make things worse. You’ll have the pressure of ROI (return on investment) after an investor invests, which will get you stuck in a vicious loop that could impact the diet’s authenticity,” said Bansal. Gupta also backed out quoting his fellow shark Thapar’s catchphrase – that he has no expertise in the field. SAS Fat to Slim: ‘Dangerous & gimmicky’ weight-loss startup gets slammed on Shark Tank India

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Fishing provides food and jobs, but fish stocks are being depleted and ecosystems harmed.</li><li>Venture capitalists poured $238 million into the sector last year, but founders need much more.</li></ul>Daniel Watson's company, SafetyNet Technologies, has nearly run out of money six times.When he founded the London-based business — which works on ways to make fishing more sustainable — in 2011, <a target="_blank" href="https://dan-watson.medium.com/whos-funding-ocean-conservation-tech-df1a6690fe1d">funding for ocean conservation seemed nonexistent</a>.SafetyNet survived off a patchwork of grants, prizes, crowdfunding, and bootstrapping before raising a £1.1 million, or about $1.3 million, venture-capital round in 2020 that took two years to close, due in part to a lack of investor appetite.Some <a target="_blank" href="https://www.worldwildlife.org/industries/sustainable-seafood#:~:text=3%20billion,significant%20source%20of%20animal%20protein.">3 billion people</a> rely on the ocean for food, while <a target="_blank" href="https://www.fao.org/state-of-fisheries-aquaculture">58.5 million people</a> across the world are employed in the fishing industry or related jobs. But overfishing has left some <a target="_blank" href="https://ourworldindata.org/fish-and-overfishing#how-much-of-the-world-s-fish-is-managed-sustainably">fish stocks depleted,</a> while destructive fishing practices like <a target="_blank" href="https://ourworldindata.org/fish-and-overfishing#how-much-fish-do-we-catch-from-each-method">dredging have harmed ecosystems</a>.This adds to the threats already faced by the ocean, including <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ocean-acidification-bone-research-predict-reef-health-2023-4?r=US&amp;IR=T">the effects of the climate crisis</a>, loss of biodiversity, and pollution.To address these challenges, the <a target="_blank" href="https://oceans-and-fisheries.ec.europa.eu/policy/common-fisheries-policy-cfp_en">European Union</a> and other global leaders are pushing for science-based fishing practices to ensure that fish populations can be maintained.<div type="image" title="Daniel Watson Dan holding a CatchCam camera." height="1667" width="2500" msid="103517055" hostid="261" sizebytes="157842"></div>They also <a target="_blank" href="https://oceans-and-fisheries.ec.europa.eu/system/files/2023-02/COM-2023-103_en.pdf">want to see</a> reduced bycatch, known in the fishing industry as unwanted fish or other marine animals that are unintentionally caught and killed, and improved data collection to make the industry more sustainable. For fisheries, more data ultimately means they can be more precise, efficient, and cost-effective.Startups like Watson's, which works at the intersection of ocean conservation and fishing in what is known as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.mckinsey.com/industries/agriculture/our-insights/precision-fisheries-navigating-a-sea-of-troubles-with-advanced-analytics">precision fishing</a>, position themselves as part of the solution.SafetyNet's products include Pisces, a device that repels unwanted fish species to avoid bycatch, which won the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.dyson.co.uk/newsroom/overview/news/june-2021/world-oceans-day">James Dyson Award in 2012</a>; the CatchCam, an underwater camera system; and Enki, an underwater sensor.<div type="image" title="Two fishers looking at underwater footage provided by SafetyNet Technologies' CatchCam camera." height="4480" width="6720" msid="103517057" hostid="261" sizebytes="939440"></div>Fishing tech is often overlooked by venture capitalists who have preferred startups operating in aquaculture, which refers to the farming of fish, shellfish, and algae rather than the capture of wild stocks.Venture capitalists pumped a record $550 million into the aquaculture sector last year, more than double the $238 million that went to traditional fishing sectors, according to PitchBook."Fishing has to be competitive in the ocean funding space alongside all these things like aquaculture, algae, seaweed, plastic removal, carbon removal," Watson said.Still, "traditional fishing is a really important part of human nutrition and it's not going away," said Ed Phillips, an investor at Future Planet Capital who heads the firm's ocean fund.Phillips, who invests in traditional and aquaculture markets, is keen on companies that bring technology and data to the ocean, such as those mapping more efficient fishing routes."In the traditional fishing market, your customers are traditionally relatively small and they don't necessarily have huge amounts of capital to deploy new technologies, but we've seen entrepreneurs create very good businesses often bootstrapped to serve those customers," he said.<div type="image" title="fishery aquaculture croatia" height="2306" width="3500" msid="103517069" hostid="261" sizebytes="522684"></div><h2>Building hardware for the harsh ocean</h2>Investors often prefer software over hardware, given the latter is typically cost-intensive, has long lead times, and is hard to scale because of the physical parts that need to be tested and iterated.Ocean tech has the additional challenge of "dealing with this chemically rich liquid that basically eats everything that goes into it," Watson said of the ocean. Depending on how deep the technology goes, it must also be able to withstand the ocean's atmospheric pressure.Case in point: It took six years for Kortney Opshaug, a former associate director at NASA, to bring her data-collecting buoy to market. The device tracks the location and movement of lost and discarded fishing gear, which makes up <a target="_blank" href="https://reports.eia-international.org/a-new-global-treaty/fishing-gear/#:~:text=Of%20all%20the%20sources%20of,it%20is%20closer%20to%20half.">10% of global marine-plastic pollution</a>.<div type="image" title="Blue Ocean Gear CEO Kortney Opshaug on a boat" height="2268" width="3024" msid="103517071" hostid="261" sizebytes="1036792"></div>While the vessels Opshaug has sailed aboard aren't short of technology — they "look like the cockpit of a 747," she said — the marine environment is harsh."People think of buoys that float very gently on the surface," Opshaug said."No, it's out in the Bering Sea, it's getting dragged under to 1,000 feet. It's in hurricanes, it's getting slammed against the deck. Making something that's really robust but that also operates the way that a fisherman wants it to, it's not that straightforward."Blue Ocean Gear's buoys have additional sensors to contribute to climate research, which benefits the fisherman because they get more accurate predictions from where they actually fish, Opshaug said.Investors are still interested into ocean-tech startups despite the high cost of developing, testing, and selling equipment. In August, <a target="_blank" href="https://tech.eu/2023/08/01/ocean-14-capital-eur10-million-ava-ocean/">Ava Ocean nabbed 10 million euros</a>, or about $10.8 million, for precision seabed harvesting from the seafood-focused fund Ocean 14 Capital.The startup's tech can move fisheries away from destructive dredging practices and subsequently open up waters where fishing has been restricted as a result harmful practices, Maren Hjorth Bauer, a "blue economy" investor who sits on Ava Ocean's board, said.<div type="image" title="A 3D-printed nut cracker, which was made from recycled fishing nets." height="3456" width="5184" msid="103517073" hostid="261" sizebytes="454698"></div>There are plenty of opportunities on land, too. The <a href="https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/sundial-foods-announces-4m-seed-round-to-bring-vegan-whole-cut-chicken-wings-to-market-301428988.html">company announced</a> on Friday that it led a $4 billion funding round for Sundial Foods, a vegan startup based in San Francisco that develops imitation chicken meat. The decision to work with Sundial came after a "successful collaboration" with the startup as part of the company's research and development accelerator program, a Nestle spokesperson told Insider.Sundial's specialty is meatless chicken wings, which are designed "to offer a complete wing experience, which includes the skin, muscle, and bone," according to the company.
