At the request, and with the help, of the government of Ukraine, Google has started rolling out a rapid Air Raid Alerts system for Android phones in Ukraine. "This work is supplemental to the country's existing air raid alert systems, and based on alerts already being delivered by the Ukrainian government," said Kent Walker, President, Global Affairs at Google. The Android notifications will be based on the alerts already being sent by the Ukrainian government. "Tragically, millions of people in Ukraine now rely on air strike alerts to try to get to safety," Walker said in a statement late on Thursday. Google said that to help the increasing number of refugees in the region, it is developing ways for businesses to flag if they are providing services to refugees. "Beginning today, hotel owners in countries neighbouring Ukraine can indicate on their Business Profile whether they're offering free or discounted accommodations for refugees," said the company. Local businesses can post to their Business Profile on Search and Maps to offer various services and aid to refugees from Ukraine. "As we compile this information over the coming weeks, we'll make it possible for people to quickly find these places on Search and Maps," Google added. It can help with <keyword id="11903517" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="sleep" source="Orion">sleep</keyword>, stress, anxiety, relaxation, and even learning.</li></ul>Plenty of CEOs swear by <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/meditation-apps-review-headspace-calm-one-was-way-better-2021-9">meditation,</a> but Google's chief executive likes to relax using a slightly lesser-known practice.In an interview with <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/reviews/out?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.wsj.com%2Farticles%2Fgoogle-ceo-sundar-pichais-vision-for-return-to-work-11646055640">The Wall Street Journal</a> this week, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-life-of-google-ceo-sundar-pichai-in-photos-2017-1">Sundar Pichai</a> said he sometimes unwinds with the help of something called non-sleep deep rest, or NSDR, a term coined by Stanford neuroscience professor Andrew Huberman, who <a href="https://tim.blog/2021/07/08/andrew-huberman-transcript/">says</a> it involves "self-inducing a state of calm" and "directing our focus to something.""I found these podcasts which are non-sleep deep rest, or NSDRs," Pichai told the Journal. "So while I find it difficult to meditate, I can go to YouTube, find an NSDR video. They're available in 10, 20, or 30 minutes, so I do that occasionally."According to Huberman, NSDR can help people relax, fall asleep more easily, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/i-tried-two-minute-productivity-rule-getting-tasks-done-quickly-2022-1">reduce stress and anxiety,</a> ease pain, and even accelerate learning. It's commonly achieved through two of what Huberman calls NSDR "protocols": yoga nidra and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/i-tried-hypnosis-anxiety-go-out-public-covid19-worked-2021-5">hypnosis.</a>The former involves lying flat on your back on the ground, typically with your eyes closed, and following guidance from an instructor, virtually or in-person, as they lead you through a number of activities, yoga nidra instructor <a href="https://traceeyoga.com/">Tracee Stanley</a> told Insider.In yoga nidra, you may be asked to scan for places of tension, focus on your breathing, bring your awareness to various parts of the body, or begin diaphragmatic breathing, all with the intention of "giving the mind something to focus on," Stanley says.As your body begins to rest, doing these things can cause your heart rate to slow down. Your brain may also switch from beta waves, which are associated with an active mind, to alpha waves, which correspond to a more relaxed brain state.Stanley says people doing yoga nidra may find themselves "hovering in a liminal space between being awake and falling asleep." Their bodies may physically fall asleep, yet they "maintain awareness both internally and simultaneously being aware of their surroundings."Stanley added that the body becomes "more receptive to inertia" during yoga nidra, which she notes is different from <keyword id="6388212" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="meditation" source="Orion">meditation</keyword> because it is a form of "non-doing.""You're allowing inertia to let your body rest and be held by whatever it is that you are supported by," she said. "That means your body for once can actually release needing to do anything."As for hypnosis, Huberman describes it as "a state of calm and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/i-tried-brain-dump-technique-to-reduce-distractions-build-focus-2022-1">high focus."</a> Hypnosis can be done with the help of a clinical hypnotist, or it can be self-induced using various hypnosis apps or videos."It's like looking at something through a telephoto lens," he <a href="https://tim.blog/2021/07/08/andrew-huberman-transcript/">said.</a> "You're eliminating the surround. So it's a state of high focus, which normally ... would be associated with a high degree of excitement or stress. But hypnosis is a unique state, because you have a high degree of focus, but you're very relaxed."

It's commonly used to achieve a state called <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-ceo-sundar-pichai-non-sleep-deep-rest-nsdr-relax-2022-3">non-sleep deep rest, or NSDR,</a> according to Stanford neuroscience professor Dr. Andrew Huberman, who coined the acronym. One <a href="https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s12144-020-01042-2">study</a> of more than 700 people from September 2020 found that those who tried yoga nidra "showed lower stress, higher well-being, and improved sleep quality" compared to their peers in the control group.NSDR can also help <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/i-tried-two-minute-productivity-rule-getting-tasks-done-quickly-2022-1">reduce anxiety,</a> ease pain, and even accelerate learning, according to Huberman.After learning more about it, I tried yoga nidra for a week.<h2>It was pretty hit or miss for me</h2>On my first day of trying it, I eased into it with a 10-minute yoga nidra that Huberman includes on his website. The guidance was highly specific: At one point, while asking listeners to focus on various parts of the body, the instructor listed each finger and toe individually. I hadn't expected this level of specificity, but I found the instructions throughout the week were generally just as granular.People sometimes fall asleep during yoga nidra, and instructors in many of the videos I tried this week would preface their videos by saying not to do so.Besides Huberman's recommendation, I also searched yoga nidra on YouTube, as Pichai says he does, and tried videos that popped up. Many involved things like paying attention to your breathing, focusing on different body parts and nearby sounds, visualizing yourself and your environment, and setting and repeating a Sankalpa, which is an intention or resolution you want to come to fruition.Throughout the week, I struggled to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/i-tried-brain-dump-technique-to-reduce-distractions-build-focus-2022-1">calm racing thoughts</a> in my mind and get into the right mindset for these slow guided videos; my mind would sometimes linger on things I had just finished doing beforehand or wander to things I had to do later.Another obstacle was the noise around me. Though there are sections of the video dedicated to focusing on sound, I'd sometimes find my mind still preoccupied with nearby noises even after we'd moved on, which distracted me from the new instructions at hand. I think I need an extremely quiet environment for yoga nidra.<h2>There were some minor successes, though</h2>One video seemed to do the trick for me. As it played, I felt I was in a kind of limbo, as if my body really had fallen asleep somehow while my mind remained awake. I almost felt like I was conscious of myself sleeping. I noticed my breathing and heart rate change. Opening my eyes afterwards, I felt as if I was waking up from a night's sleep, except I felt much better and more alert.After the end of the week, yoga nidra was a mixed bag. I may just need more time to get used to the slow pace and stillness of the practice. A few videos were relaxing at times, but only because of the speaker's voice or the video's music; I didn't notice slowed breathing or a slowed heart rate or any other clues that I'd achieved NSDR. When it worked for me, it was a wholly unique experience — but that was rare.
