In November 2024, 1,18,924 electric two-wheelers were sold in India, up from 92,116 electric two-wheelers sold in November 2023, recording a 29% year-on-year growth. Electric two-wheelers continue to form the bulk of electric vehicle (EV) sales in India, with EV two-wheelers making up 62% of Indian EV sales in November 2024 in terms of numbers. <h2>Ola Electric leads, but market share declines</h2>Ola Electric continues to lead the Indian electric two-wheeler market with sales of 29,191 scooters in November 2024, down from 30,073 scooters sold in November 2023. The company’s market share continues to decline, with the company commanding a market share of 24.5% in November 2024, down from 33% in November 2023. TVS Motor recorded a sale of 26,971 electric scooters in November 2024, up from 19,155 scooters sold in November 2023, recording a growth of 40.8%. The company’s market share has increased from 21% in November 2023 to 23% in November 2024. On the other hand, Bajaj Auto has emerged as a close third, with 26,163 electric scooters sold in November 2024, up from 11,843 electric scooters sold in November 2023, recording a 120.92% year-on-year growth. The company commands a 22% market share in November 2024, up from 20% in November 2023. It's not just the second spot, TVS Motor and Bajaj Auto are now inching close to Ola Electric and if the trend continues, may even dethrone the Bhavish Aggarwal-led company in the coming months. Ather Energy is in the fourth position, with 12,741 electric two-wheelers sold in November 2024, up from 9,342 scooters sold in November 2023, recording a 36.38% year-on-year growth. The company has slightly increased its market share from 10% in November 2023 to 11% in November 2024. Hero MotoCorp takes the fifth spot with 7,309 electric scooters sold in November 2024, up from 3,047 scooters sold in August 2023, recording a 139.88% year-on-year growth. Electric two-wheeler sales grow in November 2024 – TVS and Bajaj fight for the second spot

Indian companies across multiple sectors have reported disappointing results in the second quarter of fiscal year 2025, notes a new JM Financials report. Consequently, their poor performance has triggered stock price corrections for affected companies. The brunt of this weaker than expected earnings was largely borne by consumer centric sectors like FMCG (fast moving consumer goods), retail, and auto, which slacked largely due to dampened urban demand. For instance, India's largest automaker, Maruti Suzuki, reported a 5% YoY decline in its total domestic passenger vehicle wholesales, largely on the back of pent-up inventory. Similarly, Honda reported a staggering 23% YoY dip in its total sales during October 2024. A recent report by Bernstein noted that around 48% of the companies listed on the NSE100 index missed their earnings estimate for Q2FY25, the highest since March 2020. Most companies have mentioned deteriorated domestic demand, urban slowing, macroeconomic risk, and margin pressures as the main reasons behind the dip. "The quarter's earnings have made investors nervous," noted the JM Financials report. The challenging environment stems from multiple factors: softening consumer demand, rising input costs, and companies' limited ability to increase prices. Moreover, this is not limited to just one quarter. Companies have been reporting weak, single-digit earnings growth for the last six consecutive quarters. Data from India Data Hub also suggests that corporate profits of listed companies plunged by as much as 3.4% during the quarter ended September 30, 2024. This is in stark contrast to the year-ago period, where they had shot up by over 40% The oil and gas sector had a difficult quarter, with refiners hit by weak margins and city gas distributors struggling with higher input costs. Financial institutions showed mixed results. While government-owned banks reported strong numbers, microfinance institutions and some private lenders faced massive difficulties with their unsecured loans. Most notable amongst this was the case of IndusInd Bank, which saw its net profits dip by 40% amidst burgeoning provisions, which climbed 87% to Rs 1,820 crore in Q2, as against Rs 974 crore reported in the year-ago period. <h2>Markets head southwards</h2>The selling trend by FPIs has dragged down the major Indian indices, the Nifty 50 and Sensex, both of which have dropped by around 8% since the beginning of this selling spree in October. According to National Securities Depository Ltd. (NSDL) data, FPIs offloaded equities worth a significant Rs 19,994 crore in just the first five trading sessions of November last week. The impact is clearly visible on Indian stock markets. Data suggests that while every sector in October closed the month in red, auto, oil and gas, and consumer durables were the most badly hit, each declining by as much as 10% during the month. Another indicator underlining the inherent weakness of the market was that the month saw only 242 stocks hit their 52-week high, significantly below the usual monthly average of 310.

When a gunman died after injuring Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania in July, for instance, Amazon saw some people put off making purchases on the website, CFO Brian Olsavsky said in August."A lot of times, purchases will defer and people will come back and buy what they were going to buy," Olsavsky said on a call with reporters. "And other times — that won't happen."Other companies have invoked the election but not provided details about the dynamics leading consumers to pull back. Anna Manz, CFO of Nestlé, said on the company's earnings call last week that it's facing a slowdown in the US and "concerns around the elections are playing out." Nestlé did not immediately respond to a request for more details from Business Insider.Research suggests that some consumers — though not all — do indeed reduce purchases around the event.Some shoppers are holding off on making purchases until after November 5, according to a September survey of 400 Kroger shoppers by 84.51, the grocer's marketing subsidiary. Eighteen percent of those surveyed said they were holding off on buying big-ticket items such as electronics or appliances. Slightly smaller percentages said they were holding off on an investment decision or buying a car.Consumers might be holding off on big purchases because they need loans and hope that interest rates will fall more in the months after the election, said Alex Trott, director of insights at 84.51. The plea calls for a thorough investigation into illegal ticket sales and the manipulation of online ticketing platforms, with specific reference to Coldplay's highly anticipated concert. The plea was mentioned on Monday for urgent hearing before a division bench comprising Chief Justice D. K. Upadhyaya and Justice Amit Borkar. Noting that a police inquiry into the matter was already underway, the court adjourned the hearing to November, after the Diwali vacation. <h2>Allegations of <keyword id="23627270" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ticketing-irregularities" source="keywords">ticketing irregularities</keyword></h2>The PIL specifically alleges foul play during last month’s sale of tickets for Coldplay's concert on the popular online ticketing platform, <keyword id="20215809" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BookMyShow" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="BookMyShow" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="BookMyShow">BookMyShow</keyword>. According to the petition, many potential buyers were locked out of the website within minutes of the ticket sales opening, only to discover that the tickets had been sold out. Shortly thereafter, these same tickets appeared on secondary platforms at exorbitant prices, fueling suspicions of deliberate manipulation. Vyas, in his submission, noted that secondary websites were still selling tickets at inflated rates. He argued that this exploitative practice deprived fans of their right to fair access to entertainment, violating the <keyword id="20003683" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="consumer-protection" source="keywords">Consumer Protection</keyword> (E-Commerce) Rules, 2020, which mandate fair and non-deceptive practices by e-commerce entities. According to Vyas, there is an urgent need for the government and judicial system to intervene, as ticketing platforms and event organisers are either complicit or failing to regulate secondary market sales effectively. <h2>Call for stricter guidelines</h2>The plea calls for the Bombay High Court to lay down stringent guidelines to prevent the black marketing and touting of event tickets. Vyas has asked for a framework that would ensure transparency and fairness in <keyword id="23627269" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="online-ticket-sales" source="keywords">online ticket sales</keyword> and reduce the exploitation of fans. The PIL emphasises that the lack of proper regulations in India’s ticketing sector has allowed platforms like BookMyShow to bypass rules, leaving consumers vulnerable to deceptive practices. It urges the court to consider the Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, 2020, as the basis for implementing stricter regulatory measures in the ticketing industry. <h2>Ongoing police investigation</h2>Following last month’s irregularities, Vyas lodged a police complaint with the Economic Offences Wing of the Mumbai Police, which is currently conducting an inquiry. Overall sales of passenger vehicles (PV), including electric vehicles (EV) were at 46,143 units as against 46,425 units in the year-ago month, down 1 per cent, it added. In the domestic market, PV sales, including EVs were marginally higher at 46,068 units last month as compared to 46,037 units in November 2022. Sales of passenger EVs, including in the domestic market, stood at 4,761 units as against 4,451 units in the year-ago month, up 7 per cent, the company said. Tata Motors said its total commercial vehicles (CV) sales in November 2023 were at 28,029 units as compared to 29,053 units in the same month last year, down 4 per cent. Domestic CV sales were lower by 3 per cent at 26,579 units as compared to 27,430 units in the year-ago month, it added. The Mumbai-based automaker had dispatched 58,303 units in November 2022. Utility vehicle dispatches stood at 39,981 units last month, an increase of 32 per cent over 30,238 units in the year-ago period, <keyword id="45224" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mahindra" source="Orion">Mahindra</keyword> &amp; Mahindra (M&amp;M) said in a statement. Exports, however, declined 42 per cent last month to 1,816 units as compared to 3,122 units in November 2022. "We continue our growth trend, backed by strong demand for our SUV portfolio...While we saw a healthy festive season, we faced supply challenges on select parts during the month. We are keeping a close watch and taking appropriate steps to mitigate the challenges," M&amp;M President Automotive Division Veejay Nakra said. M&amp;M said its tractor wholesales stood at 32,074 units in November as compared to 30,528 units in the year-ago period. Exports, however, declined to 1,005 units last month from 1,348 units in November 2022. "The festive season saw high demand pull in the domestic market, supported by Kharif harvest realisations, with retails being strong during Dhanteras and Diwali," M&amp;M President-Farm Equipment Sector Hemant Sikka said. Mahindra sales rise 21% to 70,576 units in November

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The US has approved a $2 billion arms sale to Taiwan that includes missile and radar systems.</li><li>The potential sale would include three NASAMS air-defense systems.</li></ul>The US on Friday approved a potential <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-send-taiwan-largest-ever-security-package-officials-china-threat-2024-9">arms sale package</a> for Taiwan worth nearly $2 billion.The first part of the package would include three National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems (NASAMS) and 123 Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missile (AMRAAM-ER) missiles, among other things, costing $1.16 billion, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) said in a press release.An additional $828 million sale would include radar systems, the agency said.The deal awaits approval by Congress.The DSCA said the package would improve Taiwan's "capability to meet current and future threats" by improving its air defenses and helping it provide regional security and increase "interoperability" with the US."The proposed sale of this equipment and support will not alter the basic military balance in the region," it added.The <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/countries-are-giving-ukraine-air-defenses-for-russian-missiles-drones-2022-11">NASAMS is a medium-range air-defense system</a> that can be used to defend against aircraft, drones, and cruise missiles.It was developed jointly by the US firm Raytheon and Norway's Kongsberg Defense and Aerospace.The system, which has as range of around 25 miles, has been battle-tested in the Russia-Ukraine war.US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said in November 2022 that the NASAMS system had up to that point had a 100% success rate in intercepting Russian missiles."Their performance, so far, has been very impressive," he said.It comes amid China's continued military presence around Taiwan.China, which views Taiwan as a breakaway province, has regularly conducted military exercises around the island.A spokseperson for the Chinese military's Eastern Theater Command <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://mp.weixin.qq.com/s/7Cztrgac9tEcCmUoBAVk4Q">called</a> drills that took place earlier this month in the Taiwan Strait and around Taiwan "a stern warning to the separatist acts of 'Taiwan Independence' forces."One analyst told Business Insider in June that increasing <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-showed-how-easily-no-notice-it-can-surround-taiwan-2024-6">military exercises around the island had the "makings of a blockade."</a>The Chinese military has been able to "essentially start mounting an increased tempo of these large-scale drills that have a lot of the makings of a blockade," Tom Shugart, a former US Navy officer and current adjunct senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security think tank, said.Further exercises in May had showed that China's fleet was "very well suited" for a blockade or quarantine of the island, he added.Wellington Koo, Taiwan's defense minister, said on Wednesday that a real Chinese blockade of Taiwan would be an act of war, per <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/taiwan-says-chinese-aircraft-carrier-group-sailed-through-taiwan-strait-2024-10-22/">Reuters</a>.Business Insider has contacted the Department of Defense for comment.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Swing state asking rents have shot up almost 24% in the last four years, a Redfin report found.</li><li>Rent affordability has improved slightly with income gains, but it remains a key issue for swing state renters.</li></ul>Swing states have seen a huge rise in rent prices since the 2020 election — a fact that will likely make housing affordability a key issue in this year's presidential race, Redfin said. The report says median asking rents in swing states have shot up almost 24% since 2020, with especially big increases in key states like Michigan.As rent prices have climbed, housing affordability remains stretched. Typical swing state renter households earn $50,267 a year, but to be able to afford a median-priced apartment that costs no more than 30% of that income, they would need to make $60,633, the report says.That's a $10,365 difference, meaning renters in swing states earn 17% less than they need to afford the typical apartment.That deficit actually marks a slight improvement compared to the last election, when swing state renters faced a 21% difference in income and affordable rent. The slightly improved affordability stems from gains in incomes, which have risen faster than rent prices.Yet, the income and rent discrepancy remains sizeable, the study says. Given that the difference between income and median rent peaked at 31.4% in 2021 following the last election, and given that younger renters have since entered the market for the first time, housing affordability is likely to be an issue at the top of mind for many voters in the states likely to decide the election. "While the economy has been improving on paper, that's not what it feels like for a lot of US families. Many renters—especially young people—still feel the rent is too damn high," Redfin chief economist Daryl Fairweather said.The study looked at voters in Arizona, Nevada, Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Georgia and North Carolina — states where the race between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris is particularly close.In Arizona, rental affordability has improved the most with an almost 10% increase in affordability, while in Michigan, affordability has fallen almost 5%.The study says asking rents in Michigan have jumped over 12% in just the last year as the Midwest faces high demand and less active home building than other regions.Pennsylvania, meanwhile, faces a nearly 30% difference between median renter income and asking rent. Pennsylvania is a critical state, with Harris and Trump nearly tied in the latest polls."America's swing state voters will decide the outcome of the next presidential election based on the candidates' plans for tackling key issues including the housing affordability crisis," Fairweather said.The situation is also tough for prospective buyers in these states. In July, Redfin found the median monthly housing payment in swing states has <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/housing-costs-mortgage-rates-prices-insurance-swing-states-election-november-2024-7">nearly doubled in the last four years</a>, rising by 92% to reach a record high of $2,161.That rise means people earning the median swing-state income are able to afford just one-third of homes for sale, down from roughly two-thirds in 2020.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Electric cars have hit a major speed bump in Europe.</li><li>According to industry data, EV sales fell 44% in August as demand cooled across the continent.</li></ul>Europe is facing plunging sales of electric vehicles — and the continent's struggles are a warning sign for the US.Registrations fell by nearly 44% in August compared with the same month last year, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association. The slump was driven by a 69% decline in Germany, Europe's biggest car market and economy.The cooling demand has led to questions over whether European automakers can meet the European Union's ambitious climate goals, which require all new cars to be zero-emission by 2035.It's also put pressure on EV companies and their suppliers. One of Europe's key battery manufacturers, Northvolt, announced on Monday <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/northvolt-european-battery-startup-cutting-jobs-sweden-ev-tesla-2024-9">it will lay off 1,600 employees</a> and scale back its expansion plans to focus on existing customers.<h2 id="03606594-0832-457a-a25e-b3bc29e8114e">EVs hit a speed bump</h2>Europe's EV industry is suffering from a complex mixture of challenges, auto industry analysts told Business Insider.In Germany, home to a massive Tesla gigafactory and a famous automotive tradition, demand has been hit by a government decision to phase out subsidies for EVs in December 2023.William Roberts, automotive research lead at battery consultancy Rho Motion, described the decision to pull the country's EV subsidies with barely a week's notice as a "shock removal" that, coupled with <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-vs-china-economy-europe-global-decoupling-wall-street-markets-2024-">weak economic conditions,</a> has severely dented consumer sentiment in Germany and the rest of the EU.A lack of affordable electric vehicles has not helped the situation. Although EU customers do have access to some EVs that are <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chinese-electric-cars-you-can-buy-in-europe-not-us-2024-9">not available in the US,</a> Roberts said most still fall into the premium category.Dylan Khoo, an analyst at technology intelligence firm ABI Research, told BI: "There are only a handful of models that you could really say are mass market, and even those are quite a bit more expensive than their gasoline counterparts."The lack of affordable models is unlikely to be helped by the EU's proposed tariffs on China-made EVs, which include a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://ec.europa.eu/commission/presscorner/detail/en/ip_24_4301">17% tariff on BYD vehicles and 9% on Teslas</a> imported from China.Roberts said that's probably not great news for drivers. "If the consumer is just looking for the cheapest possible EV, then at the moment, that would probably be satisfied by an imported Chinese vehicle."<h2 id="f811f30f-e910-4869-9a83-5e59c6307df5">Supply chain struggles</h2>Europe has also faced difficulties in developing its EV supply chain, with many <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-09-11/vw-s-german-factory-closures-highlight-wider-problems-for-europe-s-carmakers">factories left with under capacity</a> and startups such as Northvolt struggling after the demand slowdown hit their ambitious expansion plans."I think for Northvolt there was a sense of over-optimism and over-ambitiousness, when you compare their plans to where some of the manufacturers are," Khoo said.Roberts said Europe has suffered from a patchwork attempt to encourage EV demand and build out its supply chain."The EU is not a federal government like the US — they can't blanket provide huge incentives and subsidies and have every country take them up," he said."So the supply chain is always going to be a bit more fragmented, and that's going to lead to difficulties when you're all trying to move towards one target as a bloc."<h2 id="62b2ae38-d830-442a-bdde-324e3689eed4">A warning for the US</h2>The struggles faced by Europe provide a warning sign to the US, which lags behind its cross-Atlantic neighbor in EV adoption.Electric cars accounted for 25% of new vehicle sales in Europe last year, compared to just 10% in the US, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.iea.org/reports/global-ev-outlook-2024/trends-in-electric-cars">according to IEA data</a>.Like Europe, few affordable EV models are on sale in the US, which experts have suggested has <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/electrc-vehicle-demand-problem-affordability-expense-price-cost-2023-10">contributed to a slowdown in demand</a> in recent months.Key EV factories and infrastructure have also been delayed as automakers rethink their EV plans and shift focus to hybrids. Ford is halting production of a new electric pickup at a planned factory in Tennessee, and GM is delaying an EV battery plant in Indiana.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-trump-presidential-victory-could-mean-for-evs-tesla-musk-2024-7">Consumers face concerns over subsidies with the election</a> looming, too.Trump and his running mate, JD Vance, have cast doubt over whether the $7,500 tax credit for purchasing a new EV, introduced by Joe Biden's Inflation Reduction Act, will continue if they win the presidential election in November.The prospect of crucial subsidies being suddenly removed, as in Germany, could have an equally chilling effect on America's EV industry. However, Roberts said while the US will likely face its own pressures down the line, it has a significant supply chain advantage over the EU."There's a lot more funding available," he said. "If that's used correctly to build out the supply chain, then that can have a much more positive impact than in Europe, where the funding for the supply chain has been a lot more reliant on just the private sector."Still, "I'd argue the US is still in an early adopter phase when it comes to EVs. You'd be silly to not take these warning signs from anyone further ahead of you in the curve," he added.
