India's domestic air passenger traffic rose 9% to more than 1.27 crore in November, according to official data released on Friday. Last month also saw daily air traffic touching new highs multiple times. <keyword id="6354706" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="indigo" source="Orion">IndiGo</keyword> remained the country's largest domestic carrier but its market share declined to 61.8% in November from 62.6% in October. However, none of the scheduled carriers had an On-Time Performance (OTP) score of more than 80% in November. Official data released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Friday showed that airlines flew 1.27 crore passengers in November compared to 1.17 crore in the year-ago period. This marks a growth of 9.06% on an annual basis. "Passengers carried by domestic airlines during January-November 2023 were 1,382.34 lakhs as against 1,105.10 lakhs during the corresponding period of previous year thereby registering annual growth of 25.09% and monthly growth of 9.06%," DGCA said. The domestic market share of <keyword id="6358032" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="spicejet" source="Orion">SpiceJet</keyword> rose to 6.2% in November from 5% in October. Its OTP stood at 41.8% last month. <keyword id="2573" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="air-india" source="Orion">Air India</keyword>'s domestic market share remained unchanged at 10.5% in November while that of Vistara fell marginally to 9.4% last month. In November, the share of Akasa Air and AIX Connect remained unchanged at 4.2% and 6.6%, respectively. As per the data, Akasa Air topped the OTP chart at 78.2%, followed by IndiGo at 77.5% and Vistara at 72.8%. Air India's OTP was at 62.5% while that of AIX Connect and Alliance Air were at 69.7% and 66.1%, respectively. On-Time Performance (OTP) of scheduled domestic airlines is computed for four metro airports -- Bangalore, Delhi, Hyderabad, and Mumbai.

"But to drive the number of runway incursions to zero, we must continue to focus on and invest in this priority."<h2>Mandatory overtime</h2>One major cause of near-misses is the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/air-traffic-controller-shortage-salary-requirements-plane-collisions-close-calls-2023-8">strained workload of air traffic controllers</a>.Rich Santa, president of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association, previously told Business Insider that many controllers are working six-day weeks and ten-hour days.And The Times reported that some <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/air-traffic-controllers-workload-stress-alcohol-drugs-faa-close-calls-2023-12">controllers have turned to alcohol and sleeping pills</a> to cope with their grueling schedules.Long hours and irregular shifts also cause fatigue, which in turn leads to more problems at airports — as pointed out by Jennifer Homendy, chair of the National Transportation Safety Board, during a Senate hearing last November."<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/air-traffic-control-staffing-shortage-causing-flight-cancellations-alpa-2022-6">Air traffic controllers</a> are being required to do mandatory overtime," she said. "It ends up leading to fatigue and distraction, which is exactly what we're seeing as part of these incident investigations. And it all just comes down to the shortage of staffing."A government audit released last June found 77% of critical ATC facilities are understaffed.Paul Rinaldi, a former NATCA president, told Forbes that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/suzannerowankelleher/2023/06/26/faa-lacks-a-plan-for-air-traffic-control-shortage-per-government-report/">shortages began back in 2013</a> due to funding restrictions from budget sequestration."They closed the air traffic control academy," he said. "They looked at reducing hours and many air traffic facilities. They looked at closing and cutting more than 100 federal contract towers, and stopped most modernization projects."It's also a notoriously difficult job, so there are lots of training requirements. When the world was struck by the COVID pandemic, many training programs were paused, in turn delaying certification for controllers.The FAA is trying to combat the shortage in a variety of ways, like streamlining training programs.An FAA spokesperson said it is "accelerating air traffic controller hiring by moving to a year-round hiring track for experienced controllers from the military and private industry," and enhancing training with modernized simulators."We are continuing to work on our culture, processes, systems, and integration of safety efforts to maintain our stellar safety record," they added.<h2>Fatigue measures</h2>It's also put together a panel to review air traffic controller fatigue."The panel will examine how the latest science on sleep needs and fatigue considerations could be applied to controller work requirements and scheduling," Whitaker said during the congressional hearing.That includes "risks associated with controller fatigue resulting from shifting schedules and excessive overtime."For pilots and cabin crew, dealing with fatigue is more apparent because they travel through different time zones, unlike controllers whose biggest risk is exhausting work schedules.Boeing has developed an "alertness model" used for an app called CrewAlert, which anyone can download to assess fatigue risk.Brad Surak, Boeing's vice-president for digital aviation solutions, told BI at last year's Paris Air Show: "Its main purpose is for an aircrew who's operating on a complex schedule."They're changing multiple time zones, they're getting schedules disrupted, and the airline has to replan where they might be based," he added. "We don't just operate the schedule for economics, we take into account the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wizz-air-ceo-safety-comments-pilots-should-fly-tired-2022-6">fatigue level of the crew</a>."Now it looks like controllers' sleep schedules are set to receive more attention too. They're not arriving that early and getting cleaned and changed," he said.Of course, other variables can cause delays, like tech issues, missing crew members, or weather conditions. Next thing you know, you're waiting for the next available slot to roll through, and that means you land late."When you're at the airport, Ott said it's important to remember that there's an order of things, and every action against that has consequences. A flight expert shares 3 ways to avoid crowds, delays, and cancellations this holiday season

"Passengers carried by domestic airlines between January 2022 and December 2022 were 1232.45 lakhs as against 838.14 lakhs during the corresponding period of the previous year thereby registering an annual growth of 47.05 per cent and monthly growth of 13.69 per cent," the aviation regulator said. The passenger load factor measures the seat capacity utilisation of the airline. IndiGo recorded a market share of 56.1 per cent followed by Vistara with a 9.2 per cent share. SpiceJet and Air India had an 8.7 per cent market share, shows the official data. During December 2022, a total of 408 passenger-related complaints were received by the scheduled domestic airlines. The major reasons for complaints are flight problems and refunds. Airlines have received a total of 408 complaints, out of which 401 (approx. 98 per cent) have been addressed, the DGCA data shows.  Over the past four years, the domestic passenger traffic in India has consistently been in double digits. However, the slowdown has been affecting the aviation industry since a few months. While AirAsia, a Tata sons joint venture, recorded nearly 84% occupancy. Additionally, weather disruptions played a big part in affecting flight schedules leading to several flight cancellations, thereby affecting the passenger traffic for the carrier. However, the DGCA <a href="https://www.zeebiz.com/india/news-aviation-flight-cancellations-affect-jan-air-passenger-growth-86834">reportedly</a> said that the downward projection is due to the tourist season coming to an end. Air traffic and fares were also significantly affected due to operational factors, leading to last minute cancellations, said Aloke Bajpai, CEO, ixigo. The last minute airfares therefore hiked to nearly 20-25% last month, he added. As per the DGCA's monthly traffic data, a total of 12.50 million passengers took domestic flights last month. While 11.46 million flyers boarded in January 2018 — accounting for the 9% growth, IANS reported. The rate of cancellations of scheduled domestic carriers was noted at 1.81% — with nearly 917 flyer complaints.
