<div class="KonaFilter image-container float_right"><div class="image on-image">PR NEWSWIRE/AP</div></div>Phil Martens, CEO of aluminum giant Novelis, says he's a devotee of the "100-day theory" - decide your <keyword id="132743" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="goals">goals</keyword> in the first 100 days, and make your trajectory clear.
"Very quickly, you have to decide where you're going to go," Martens <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2013/10/27/business/phil-martens-of-novelis-on-consistent-leadership.html" target="_blank">tells the New York Times</a>. "Otherwise, the organization will decide for you and will become part of whatever existed before you and whatever will exist after you."
Martens was brought into Novelis four and half years ago with instructions to turn the global company around. He says he spent the first 100 days visiting the company's plants and traveling to its international offices, looking for what was consistent between locations and what changed. He also sat down with members of the Novelis <keyword id="34454" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="leadership">leadership</keyword> team to get their input on various aspects of the company.
The message that he tried to send from the outset, Martens says, was that under his leadership Novelis would be a unified global corporation. "I wanted to make it clear that we were going to have uniform approach," he explains. "I had shirts made up that said 'One Novelis,' and I told everybody at the end of the day: 'On the way out, there are tables out there with new shirts. If you want to come in to the meeting tomorrow, you have to have it on. If not, you can go find something else.'"
"I wanted to create the image of order," he concludes, "and that we are together."

New Delhi, May 8 () US-based Novelis, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hindalco Industries, on Friday posted a 39 per cent decline in net income at USD 63 million for the quarter ended March 31, 2020. The company, which deals in aluminium rolled products, had posted a net income of USD 103 million in the year-ago period, Hindalco said in a filing to BSE. "Novelis Inc...reported net income attributable to its common shareholder of $63 million for the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2020, down 39 percent from the fourth quarter of fiscal 2019," it said. The decrease is mainly due to a loss on extinguishment of debt related to the refinancing of senior notes in the fourth quarter of FY20, it said. Novelis Inc is experiencing increasing disruption to its global aluminum production and supply chain, including the shutdown of some of its plants, as a result of government decrees and some customers temporarily shutting down their own manufacturing operations in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the filing said. The extent to which the pandemic impacts its business, results of operations and financial condition will be dependent on future developments which are highly uncertain and cannot be predicted, it added. While the company currently anticipates that lower demand will continue to negatively impact sales in the near-term, particularly in the automotive segment, Novelis has several strategic advantages that provide confidence in its ability to maintain business continuity for the long term due to its strong balance sheet, diverse product mix and global operating footprint, it said. "As we all are navigating this dynamic environment, we will continue to work closely with all relevant parties to address challenges as they arise, and will continue making decisions that are in the best interest of our employees, our customers and our communities," it said. The company's net sales decreased 12 per cent from the prior year period to USD 2.7 billion for the fourth quarter of FY20, driven by lower average LME aluminum prices and local market premiums, and a 7 per cent decline in shipments. The decline in flat rolled product shipments to 811 kilotonnes was against a very strong prior year record level, and partially due to the initial impacts from COVID-19 related disruptions in March. "Our strategy to invest in our operations and our people has delivered four consecutive years of record financial results and an exceptionally strong balance sheet. "It is this solid foundation, coupled with an unwavering commitment to our purpose of shaping a sustainable world together, that will help us safely and successfully navigate the challenges posed by the novel coronavirus and extend our leadership position in the aluminium industry," Novelis Inc President and CEO said Steve Fisher said. Total income during the quarter under review rose to Rs 57,437 crore, over Rs 53,382 crore noted in the year-ago period. The consolidated revenue for the first quarter stood at Rs 57,013 crore, up 8% YoY, on account of better realisations and efficiencies in India operations. "Hindalco reported an <keyword id="19957744" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="EBITDA" source="keywords">EBITDA</keyword> of Rs 7,992 crore (vs Rs 6,109 crore in Q1FY24) in Q1 FY25, up 31% YoY, driven by lower input costs and higher volumes," the statement said. "Our strong Q1 results ride on the back of consistent operational excellence and cost optimisation which allowed us to leverage the higher average metal prices. Hindalco Q1 profit rises 25% Rs 3,074 crore on operational efficiencies, lower input costs

New Delhi, Jan 15 () National Engineering Industries (NEI), a part of the USD 2.4 billion diversified CK Birla Group, on Wednesday said it has acquired Slovakia-based Kinex Bearings.
The company, a leading bearing manufacturer in the country, has acquired Kinex through its Europe-based subsidiary. Size of the deal was however not disclosed by NEI.
 The transaction is in line with the company's strategy to augment its product portfolio, expand geographic footprint as well as serve the existing customers better and acquire new ones, NEI said in a statement.
"The Kinex acquisition equips NEI to enhance its scale and further diversify its portfolio with a much stronger position to provide best in class products to both new and existing customers," CK Birla Group Chairman CK Birla said.
NEI President and CEO Rohit Saboo said the acquisition is a significant step forward in the company's vision and global ambitions. 
 "We are excited to have the complementary product portfolio, skills and capabilities of Kinex and we firmly believe that we can leverage the synergies between both companies to chart an exciting path ahead for growth and engineering excellence," he added.
This deal positions NEI on the global map with an international manufacturing footprint and the advantages of a more efficient supply chain to serve its global customers, Saboo said.
 Kinex, with an annual turnover of around 60 million euros, has a rich history of more than 100 years in engineering and bearing production. It supplies products to over 80 countries and employs around 1,000 workers. 
As part of the deal, Kinex brings in two production plants in Slovakia (Bytca and Kysucke Nove Mesto) with the capability to produce bearings for railways, industrial segments and textile industry.

Harvey has worked with the company since 1982 and was named head of finance in 2009. Springleaf Holdings named Scott Parker as its new vice president. He will take over that role and the top finance spot on November 15 when the company files its Form 10-Q. He is replacing Minchung Kgil, who will remain CFO of Springleaf's subsidiaries. David Morton Jr. was promoted to the CFO role at Seagate Technology. He is taking over the role from Patrick O'Malley. That was his grandfather B K Birla, who passed away yesterday at the age of 98.

A 13-year old BK was chided by an uncle about earning pocket money, and that led him to invest in shares. Within a year, he made Rs 4,000 profit. Needless to say, this budding genius was inducted into the family business, the very next year, kick starting his illustrious journey. Though he missed college, his family taught him the basics of business which is ‘hisab kitab’ or accounting. He wrote in his autobiography, Swanta: Sukhaya (For my Happiness Only) that he was put through a one-year programme learning accounting, keeping books and understanding bank statements. So deft was BK at this, that his employees could never ‘pad’ books, as he would catch any fudged number, immediately! He is known to go through his books in the middle of the month, a life-long discipline that he adhered to. Keeping his books clean, was one thing that ensured that there no big trouble at his companies. Love for photography BK was not all about business, though he attended office well into his 80s, on the fifteenth floor of Birla Building at BBD Bagh in Kolkata ---as he continued to remain the chairman of many companies in the group’s pulp to cement businesses. 
	
He was an avid photographer who carried on his passion well into his sixties. He is also a patron of arts and he and his wife Sarla helped set up the Birla Academy and an auditorium Kalamandir, a legacy which will remain long after he is gone. He is survived by his daughters and a grandson. His son, the father of Kumar Mangalam Birla, Aditya Vikram Birla, passed away in 1995. B K Birla’s funeral will be held on Thursday in Kolkata, as per his last wishes.
