In order to safeguard its 50 functional satellites in space, ISRO is going to set up a network of telescopes and radars under the Directorate of Space Situational Awareness and Management to monitor space debris. Accurate information on the location of space debris and where it’s headed, is integral to protecting satellites. This data can help determine the difference between an actual collision, and one that ‘might’ happen. India doesn't trust US with measuring space debris — and so it will set up its own agency

It will also have military applications — just like NORAD — serving as a warning system against incoming missiles or space attacks from hostile nations. NETRA is the first step in making India self sufficient when it comes to space situational awareness (SSA). What can NETRA do? As of now, NETRA can only track objects in low-earth orbit (<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/prime-minister-modi-in-his-live-address-says-indian-scientists-shot-down-a-low-orbit-satellite-300-km-away-in-space/articleshow/68593276.cms">LEO</a>), which is only 2,000 kilometers above the Earth’s surface. It can detect objects as small as 10 centimeters in size up within a range of 3,400 kilometers. Going forward, ISRO has plans to upgrade that capability to track the geostationationary orbit (GEO) as well at 36,000 kilometers. Plans for NETRA include a high-precision and long-range telescope in Leh, a radar in the North East, telescopes in Ponmudi and Mount Abu. It will also use the Multi-Object Tracking Radar (MOTR) at the Satish Dhawan Space Center in Sriharikota. The entire network will also include data processing units and a control center. India's new space warning system will also keep an eye out for hostile missiles

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>The US military's space <keyword id="6354810" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Defense">defense</keyword> command, or NORAD, is tracking an orbiting object that analysts speculate might be designed to fix - or attack - other satellites.
Governments keep tabs (and so can <a href="http://www.n2yo.com/?s=39765">you</a>) on what's floating in low orbit, which is why NORAD initially labeled the object as space debris.
But in May, Russia's government told the United Nations that a launch made last Christmas Day had sent four satellites into orbit, instead of the trio that is typically set up in a single launch.
That could explain the provenance of the mystery object, which is moving toward other Russian assets in space before potentially revealing its function. "It could have a number of functions, some civilian and some military," space security expert Patricia Lewis <a href="http://www.ft.com/intl/cms/s/2/cdd0bdb6-6c27-11e4-990f-00144feabdc0.html#axzz3JIn0z257">told</a> the Financial Times.
One of the possible military uses was the launch of "kinetic pellets which shoot out at another satellite," Lewis said. In wars of the future, it might be advantageous - though very publicly hostile - to take out a rival nation's eyes.
In 2012, anonymous sources <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/01/14/us-china-usa-satellites-idUSBRE90D08620130114">told</a> Reuters, US intelligence completed a report analyzing "the growing vulnerability of US satellites that provide secure military communications, warn about enemy missile launches, and provide precise targeting coordinates."
Killing satellites is something both the US and the Soviet Union tested in the 1980s but had let go until testing by China led to the US doing the same (and making the report).
In 2007, China destroyed one of its own, aging weather satellites with an anti-satellite device mounted on a ballistic missile. The result was a proliferation of space debris that, as depicted in a fictional scenario in last year's blockbuster "Gravity," poses a danger to other satellites.
The US followed suit the next year by destroying a spy satellite - one that was already out of commission - simply by <a href="http://www.cnn.com/2008/TECH/space/02/20/satellite.shootdown/">ramming</a> a missile into it; no explosive was used. At the time, the Pentagon specified that resulting debris would burn upon re-entering the Earth's atmosphere.
The difference here, of course, is that Russia's experiment could involve an asset with more longevity, rather than a missile used just once. If it is indeed a weapon, it could lend new urgency to the previously tentative race to weaponize not just air, land, and sea, but space as well.

Western Space Agencies Are Tracking What Could Be A Russian Satellite Killer

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Four suspicious flying objects have been shot down over North American skies in recent days.</li><li>The commander of NORAD and NORTHCOM explained why more of these objects seem to suddenly be popping up.</li></ul>A US Air Force general overseeing commands tasked with defending US and Canadian airspace explained that there's a reason mysterious flying objects seem to suddenly be popping up all over the place. There has been a change in the ways the military looks for them.Four objects, one Chinese surveillance balloon and three other smaller objects, were shot down in the span of about a week, and the head of the military commands that have been involved in shooting down these objects flying over the US and Canada <a href="https://www.defense.gov/News/Transcripts/Transcript/Article/3296177/melissa-dalton-assistant-secretary-of-defense-for-homeland-defense-and-hemisphe/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">revealed in a briefing Sunday</a> that the uptick in discovery and engagement follows a tweak of the radar filters after the Chinese spy balloon drifted across the continental US earlier this month.Gen. Glen VanHerck, the commander of North American Aerospace Defense Command and US Northern Command, said that NORAD started searching for much smaller, slower-moving flying objects, while also making adjustments to filtration based on altitude. Typically, NORAD's radar detection is searching for fighter jets or bombers, which move at high speeds."What we're seeing is very, very small objects that produce a very, very low radar cross-section," VanHerck said. "These are very, very slow objects in the space, if you will, going at the speed of the wind essentially."VanHerck said he believes the increased ability to detect these objects can be attributed to the radar adjustments and that operators are on "heightened alert" and looking more closely for these smaller and slower objects. Just days later, on <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-fighter-shot-down-object-over-alaska-that-threatened-flights-2023-2">February 10</a>, an F-22 used an AIM-9X to down an unidentified object over Alaska. US officials said this object was flying at an altitude of 40,000 feet and posed a threat to civilian aircraft. On <a href="https://www.defense.gov/News/Releases/Release/Article/3295989/statement-on-todays-actions-by-north-american-aerospace-defense-command/">February 11</a>, the next day, an F-22 fired an AIM-9X to take down an object over northern Canada. The F-22, which notched its first three <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/f-22-first-air-to-air-kills-neither-against-jets-2023-2">air-to-air kills</a> after nearly two decades in service, was finally given a rest on <a href="https://www.defense.gov/News/Releases/Release/Article/3296111/statement-on-todays-actions-by-north-american-aerospace-defense-command/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sunday</a>, when an F-16 — still using the AIM-9X — took down an object over Lake Huron that was flying at a low altitude of 20,000 feet, well below the cruising altitude of many commercial airliners. While the US identified the first object as a high-altitude <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-officials-recovering-chinese-spy-balloon-was-key-to-response-2023-2?_gl=1*1rx6zwq*_ga*MTYxMzg3Nzg4MS4xNjY0NzgwMTg3*_ga_E21CV80ZCZ*MTY3NjMwMjM2Mi4yNTIuMS4xNjc2MzAyMzY3LjAuMC4w">Chinese surveillance balloon</a>, North American militaries have yet to explain publically what the other objects are — aside from offering a few details about size and shape — and what purpose they serve. Melissa Dalton, the assistant secretary of defense for homeland defense and hemispheric affairs, said on Sunday that although the US has not been able to identify what these recent objects were from over the weekend, the decision to shoot them down was still made out of an "abundance of caution to protect our security and interests." She added that the recent objects did not pose a "kinetic military threat," but they were traveling in proximity to "sensitive" US military sites and that their relatively low altitude could possibly threaten civilian aircraft. "We have been more closely scrutinizing our air space at these altitudes, including enhancing our radar, which may at least partly explain the increase in objects that we've detected over the past week," Dalton noted. "We also know that a range of entities, including countries, companies, research organizations operate objects at these altitudes for purposes that are not nefarious, including legitimate research." As recovery teams work to collect debris from the downed objects, it's not immediately clear where they all came from. Pentagon Press Secretary Brig. Gen.
