Softening of retail inflation has started reflecting in the food plates, with prices of both vegetarian and non-vegetarian thalis (full meals) witnessing a notable drop in August this year compared to the same time last year and the previous month, <keyword id="19898320" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="CRISIL" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="CRISIL" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="CRISIL">CRISIL</keyword> MI&amp;A Research noted in its latest report. The data shows that on an annual basis, the <keyword id="19995902" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cost" source="keywords">cost</keyword> of a home-cooked <keyword id="21194116" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vegetarian-thali" source="keywords">vegetarian thali</keyword> declined by 8 %. On the other hand, the non-vegetarian thalis saw an even steeper drop of 12 %. The reduction in the cost of the veg thali year-over-year was mainly due to a dramatic 51 % drop in <keyword id="21475520" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="tomato-prices" source="keywords">tomato prices</keyword>. Tomato, which constituted 14 % of the cost of the vegetarian thali in August, experienced a significant price drop of 51 % year-on-year. Prices fell from Rs 102 per kg in August 2023 to Rs 50 per kg in August 2024, owning to fresh arrivals from southern and western states. Another major contributor that helped reduce the cost of the thali was a 27 % drop in <keyword id="19906627" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="LPG-prices" source="keywords">LPG prices</keyword>. In March 2024, the price of a 14.2 kg LPG cylinder in Delhi was Rs 803, down from Rs 1,103 in August 2023, which positively contributed to the ease in the cost. The month saw a declining thali cost as the prices of vegetable oil, chili, and cumin, which together account for less than 5% of the veg thali cost, also eased, falling by 6%, 30%, and 58%, respectively, over the year. As per observations, the drop in the cost of non-vegetarian thalis was due to a 13% year-on-year drop in <keyword id="23064616" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="broiler-chicken-prices" source="keywords">broiler chicken prices</keyword>, which make up about 50 % of the total cost. However, the decline in thali costs was partially capped by an increase in the prices of <keyword id="23064617" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="onions-and-potatoes" source="keywords">onions and potatoes</keyword>. Onions rose by Rs 15 per kg and potatoes by Rs 13 per kg due to lower arrivals from the rabi harvest. The report further noted that on a monthly basis, the cost of a vegetarian thali dropped by 4%. While the non-vegetarian thalis saw a 3% decrease. The month-on-month decline was primarily driven by a 23 % fall in tomato prices, which dropped from Rs 66 per kg in July 2024 to Rs 50 per kg in August 2024. For non-vegetarian thalis, the lower costs were also linked to a 1-3 % drop in broiler chicken prices due to reduced non-veg consumption during the Shravan month in August. However, the monthly increase in potato and onion prices by 2 % and 3 %, respectively, prevented a steeper decline in thali costs.

According to <keyword id="20489875" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="crisil-market-intelligence-and-analytics" source="keywords">Crisil Market Intelligence and Analytics</keyword> (MI&amp;A) Research '<keyword id="20489770" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rice-roti-rate" source="keywords">Rice Roti Rate</keyword>' estimates, the rise in prices of ingredients like pulses, rice, onion and tomato made home-cooked veg thali costlier in January, while decline in poultry rates helped in the fall in non-veg thali rates. The cost of the veg thali increased due to a surge of 35 per cent and 20 per cent year-on-year in prices of onion and tomato, respectively, said the report. Prices of rice (accounting for 12 per cent of the <keyword id="18314113" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="veg-thali-cost" source="Orion">veg thali cost</keyword>) and pulses (9 per cent) also increased by 14 per cent and 21 per cent y-o-y, respectively, it added. Meanwhile, the decline in the cost of the non-veg thali was due to a 26 per cent fall in broiler prices in January, compared to the same month last year, amid higher production, the report stated. However, sequentially, the cost of the veg and non-veg thalis fell 6 per cent and 8 per cent, respectively. The ease in cost was due to a decrease of 26 per cent and 16 per cent month-on-month prices of onion and tomato, respectively, with higher domestic supply of onion amid export curbs and fresh tomato arrivals from the northern and eastern states, the report said. The cost of the non-veg thali declined faster due to an 8-10 per cent month-on-month dip in prices of broilers, which account for 50 per cent of the cost, it added.

This is owing to the sharp downward trend in the prices of vegetables and dal in contrast to the previous trend of increasing prices. As a result, an average household of five individuals that eats two vegetarian 'thalis' a day, gained around ₹10,887, on average per year, while a non-vegetarian household gained Rs 11,787, on average per year. The survey states that 2015-16 can be considered as a year when there was a shift in the dynamics of 'thali' prices. Many reform measures were introduced since 2014-15 to enhance the productivity of the agricultural sector as well as efficiency and effectiveness of agricultural markets for better and more transparent price discovery. It says that food is not just an end in itself but also an essential ingredient in the growth of human capital and therefore important for national wealth creation. Today in Delhi, you will find at least three ‘100% Pure Vegetarian’ restaurants at every corner. Delhi’s vegetarians don’t have much problem to find decent thali, which would be a popular Indian meal consisting of lentils, vegetable dishes and paneer.  As we comforted ourselves with refreshing summer coolers (Rs 299) – Very Berry KalaKhatta and Watermelon juice, the train of vegetarian delights began with Vegetable Popiah (Rs 599). A neatly rolled tofu and bell peppers served with homemade smokey dip tasted delicious. The crispiness of the spring roll deserves special applaud. The next in the menu was Crystal Vegetable Dumplings (Rs 599). Thanks to the delicate potato starch dough, the dumplings don’t look opaque. Served with a variety of dips, you can actually derive taste of individual ingredients. The signature Tom Yum soup (Rs 399) was quite flavourful with hint of lemon and kafir lime. Overall the experience was quite satisfying. We did try a wide spread of non vegetarian too, ranging from Sushi, Chicken Dry red Chilli Chongqing style, <keyword id="4537028" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="schezwan-chicken-dimsum">Schezwan Chicken Dimsum</keyword> in the starters to Basa cooked in pepper sauce and Kung Pao Chicken. New Delhi, Candidates in Punjab's Jalandhar can spend Rs 15 for a cup of tea and the same price for a samosa they offer to people during public meetings and campaign trails in the <keyword id="19895394" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="lok-sabha" source="keywords">Lok Sabha</keyword> elections. However, those in Madhya Pradesh's Mandla can spend Rs 7 for a cup of tea and another Rs 7.50 for a piece of samosa, considered a staple snack in many parts of the country. With polls to elect the 18th Lok Sabha approaching, district poll panels are fixing the rates for expenses as part of the election expenditure monitoring process. The candidates will have to manage their expenditure within the prescribed limit. These rate cards often become a subject of "meme-fest" on social media about the prices not being in sync with the current inflation level. In most states, including Andhra Pradesh, the expenditure ceiling for a Lok Sabha candidate is set at Rs 95 lakh. However, in Arunachal Pradesh, Goa and Sikkim, the limit is slightly lower at Rs 75 lakh per candidate. Similarly, for Union territories, the expenditure ceiling ranges from Rs 75 lakh to Rs 95 lakh per candidate, depending on the region. In Chennai, the price of tea has been raised from Rs 10 to Rs 15 and coffee from Rs 15 to Rs 20, while the rate of chicken biryani has been reduced from Rs 180 to Rs 150 per packet compared to 2019. The rate cards also have an list of permissible rates for hiring venues and accommodation. The expenditure includes the spend for public meetings, rallies, advertisements, hoardings, pamphlets, flexis, campaign material and all other election-related work. At present, there is a ceiling on campaigning funds for individual candidates in the electoral fray but no cap on the money political parties can spend for electioneering. According to the revised guidelines issued by the ECI, the maximum permissible expenditure for campaigning in a Lok Sabha constituency varies across different states and Union territories. Section 77 (1) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951 says candidates are expected to keep an account of expenditure incurred on the elections from the "date on which he has been nominated" till the "date of declaration of the result". However, economists believe that in the upcoming August meeting, <keyword id="30067" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="rbi" source="Orion">RBI</keyword>’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) is likely to keep base interest rates unchanged. In the last few months, there have been many inflation shocks, especially with regards to rising tomato prices along with that of a few pulses and grains. According to a report by Crisil, the cost of a vegetarian thali went up by 28% and non-vegetarian thalis went up by 11% in July, as compared to June. “Over the past month, surging food prices have changed India’s inflation outlook. While vegetable prices should eventually cool, pulse and cereal prices could prove stickier. We now expect headline inflation to rise to 6-6.5% in July/August, from 4.8% in June, before settling in a 5-6% range for the rest of FY24,” said Nomura. ‘Policy settings on hold’ Though prices are skyrocketing, most economists believe that the food inflation is transitory or seasonal. Moreso, core inflation has been steady and wholesale price inflation too has been cooling off, providing comfort. All these factors indicate that the MPC will keep interest rates paused like it did in the last two meetings. “We expect the MPC to keep the repo rate unchanged at 6.5% at the 10 August meeting, flagging resilient economic growth, and anchored underlying inflation as reasons to monitor incoming economic data, while keeping policy settings on hold,” said Rahul Bajoria, MD &amp; head of EM Asia (ex-China) economics at Barclays. The RBI may not want to hurry to cut rates, says Deepak Jasani, head of retail research at HDFC Securities. “Inflation could remain elevated in July and August and if the El Nino pattern plays out in the latter half of the monsoon, this era of high inflation could continue till the end of this calendar. Oil prices globally have also started to inch up. However, we do not expect the RBI to jump the gun and resume rate hikes in its August meeting,” he added. The MPC is also expected to maintain its status quo on its "withdrawal of accommodation" stance as well. However, economists do expect the RBI to alter its inflation projections for the year, while keeping growth projections intact. “There are no new major headwinds to growth projections. Stronger than expected momentum in domestic investments resulted in major international agencies like IMF revising up India's growth projections to 6.1% from 5.9% earlier this year. We expect RBI to maintain its growth projections at 6.5% for FY24,” said a report by CARE Edge. Mixed messages from global markets While most nations across the globe had started increasing interest rates around May last year to tackle the global inflation problem — they have been coming off it in a varied manner. The world’s largest economy, the US, seems to be in the midst of more interest rate hikes. The US Fed hiked its policy rate by 25 bps last month, and experts expect a few more going ahead. The Bank of England and European Central Bank are still hiking policy rates but a few central banks of emerging markets like China and Brazil have already started their rate-cutting journey. “Recent developments show early signs of a monetary policy decoupling globally influenced by different macroeconomic conditions,” says CARE Edge. India however can go either way as the RBI Governor <keyword id="6359111" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="shaktikanta-das" source="Orion">Shaktikanta Das</keyword> has repeatedly said that it was a pause not a pivot in the earlier MPC meeting outcome. Well it is this love for delicious food might be inching up your fat intake. Along with dal fry, dishes like stuffed paratha, chuduva (poha), Karnataka’s staple Bisibelebath and Andhra’s favourite pulihora (tamarind rice) — have all been listed as foods with high amounts of ‘visible fat’ by an ICMR survey. It doesn’t matter if you are a mutton <keyword id="41887" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="biryani">biryani</keyword> person or a chicken biryani person. Almost all non-vegetarian foods like, fish, chicken, egg and mutton give high amounts of visible fat, says the survey by Indian Council of Medical Research-National Institute of Nutrition (ICMR-NIN). But vegetarians have nothing to be too happy about either. Those who love to eat rice with potato fry and other tubers and roots consume more ‘visible’ fat, the survey says. Moreover, researchers noted that contrary to general belief, vegetarians consumed more fat than non-vegetarians in the seven metros they surveyed. Delhi and Ahmedabad top the fat charts The Dil-wala Delhi meals and Gujarati meals which “cannot-be-served-without-ghee” also made it to the top of the list. The survey says that Delhi and Ahmedabad consumed the highest levels of visible fat among the seven metros <keyword id="8796353" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="whilemumbai">whileMumbai</keyword> and Hyderabad consumed the least. The other cities which were a part of the survey were Bengaluru, Chennai and Kolkata.

 “The visible fat consumption levels were significantly higher in Delhi and Ahmedabad at 44.4 gm per person/day and 43.9 gmrespectively, while the average intake in Hyderabad and Mumbai were the lowest at 25.1 gm,” says Prof P K Seth, chairman of International Life Sciences Institute India. ‘Don’t ditch your biryani but eat healthy’ Seth added that the average intake of all metros pooled was at 32.6 gm per person/day. ICMR recommends 20 gm per person per day. Overall, 18% of the total intake of energy came from visible fat. “Although, we know you can’t ditch your beloved biryani, but it is important that people are motivated to consume balanced diets, adopt a healthy lifestyle, undertake physical activity including Yoga,” said Seth. Meals in Delhi and Ahmedabad have the highest amount of fat

New Delhi, Jan 31 () The Economic Survey 2019-20 points to increasing steel production and consumption and easing of crude prices, indicating positive outlook for steel and oil and gas sectors, Union minister Dharmendra Pradhan said on Friday.
 The Economic Survey, tabled in Parliament by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, said India produced 64.3 million tonnes (MT) of crude steel and 59.73 MT of finished steel during April-October 2019-20.
 The sector achieved a growth of 5.2 per cent during April-November period of the ongoing financial year as compared to 3.6 per cent in the year-ago period, it added.
 In a tweet, Petroleum &amp; Natural Gas and Steel Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said, "#EconomicSurvey also points to increasing steel production and consumption, easing of crude prices all indicating positive outlook for steel and oil and gas sectors."
 The National Infrastructure Pipeline of Rs 102 lakh crore will facilitate growth, create infra for future and ease lives of common citizens, he said in another tweet.
 About 1.24 lakh new firms have been created in 2018, seeing a significant jump of 80 per cent from 70,000 firms in 2014. The survey highlights government's thrust on entrepreneurship and productivity growth, the minister said.
 "#EconomicSurvey estimates that post 2015-16, average households has gained close to Rs 11,000 on average per year due to moderation in price in case of vegetarian Thali and a saving of Rs 12,000 on average per year in case of non-vegetarian Thali.
 "The Thalinomics captures the Modi Government's relentless efforts to contain inflation to protect the poorest of the poor," he said.
 Pradhan further said, "Marking a Shift from pro crony policies of the past driven by favoritism &amp; rent seeking to the rule based transparent governance driven by competition &amp; fair play has led to massive jump in Ease of Doing Business, new firm creation &amp; driving wealth creation with inclusive growth."
 He said despite short-term moderation in growth, Indian economy is poised for robust growth in the medium term, supported by strong fundamentals like narrow current account deficit, high foreign exchange reserves, robust foreign investment inflows, moderate inflation and fiscal discipline.
 The survey highlights the government's reform focused approach and transparency in governance, he said, adding "Congratulations to the economists in @FinMinIndia for coming up with an insightful #EconomicSurvey 2019-20, capturing the economic policy reforms, and presenting a perspective into the future towards $5 Trillion Economy." For Rs 1,000 (exclusive of taxes and service charge) per person, diners can choose from a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=set+menu&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">set menu</a> of at least six <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=small+plates&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">small plates</a>, both vegetarian and non-vegetarian and follow it up with four desserts, and the good news is that they are free to reorder servings of any small plate they want to. 
 
There’s more. Some of the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=restaurants&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">restaurants</a> also have items on the event menu that are otherwise not available in their menu. For instance, The Fatty Bao’s menu will include a selection of new dishes such as The Fatty and Egg Dessert and The Slow Cooked Apple and Filo Pastry Slice.

 When asked about the inspiration behind introducing <keyword id="3422103" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Small-Plates">Small Plates</keyword> Week, Shetye tells us that it is in essence the reflection of the current scenario; wherein India, and to be specific, Mumbai is witnessing an influx of cafes and bars. 
 
“At a time like this, how does one decide which restaurant is worth checking out and, more importantly how do they know which dishes they should order? This is where we come in. With this event, we aim to help people discover new restaurants in the city,” he adds. 
 There’s also the fact that people nowadays are eating out in larger groups with their friends or families and as Indians, we love sharing our food. This says Shetye makes the concept of ‘Small Plates’ as a theme for a <keyword id="3422105" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="culinary-event">culinary event</keyword> a perfect fit. 
 
“The advantage of small plates is that you’re not limited to just two-three dishes and instead can sample a variety of dishes, in the process discovering dishes you might not have ordered otherwise,” he explains.

Shetye also believes that one of the reasons the trend of small plates has caught up this quickly is because as Indians, we are already familiar with the concept. “Our Indian thalis itself consist of small servings of sabzi, farsan, dal, sweet etc, so it’s not like trend is alien to us. We’ve been eating like this for a long way.” 
 
Echoing his thoughts, Ashish Sajnani, Owner, Eat Thai, one of the participating restaurant says, “Though Indians are now experimenting with their food choices, they still remain price conscious. And, this is one of the reasons teh concept of small plates has clicked because it gives the customer the leeway to variety while still being inexpensive.” 
 
To decide on the list of participating restaurants, the team looked extensively at food reviews, talked to food bloggers and restaurants, conducted surveys and also ensured they approach establishments which actually do small plates, Shetye tells us. 
 
To his surprise, all the restaurants they approached in the process of finalising the 15 restaurants for Small Plates Week responded very encouragingly and were of the opinion that it would not only aid in their discovery but would also let them showcase the dishes they do well.

For Chef Prashant of Fatty Bao, the aim of associating with events like Small Plates Week is to offer the joy and experience of a small plate meal to customers and thereby popularize the concept further. “Additionally, this will also help us draw in a new and relevant set of customers as well as showcase the philosophy behind the trendy Asian cuisine available at our restaurant.” 
 
All in all, Shetye hopes that Small Plates Week allows customers to have a good time, discover newer restaurants, try cuisines that are out of their comfort zones and aids in the concept catching on. 
 
Small Plates Week, which took the team almost six months to plan will also spread its wings to Delhi later this year.
