This announcement, made during a podcast interview with Silicon Valley investors, marks a departure from Trump's traditionally tough rhetoric on immigration. During the podcast hosted by Chamath Palihapitiya and others, Trump expressed his commitment to retaining talent educated in American universities. He argued passionately for granting green cards as a standard benefit for graduates, regardless of the institution they attended. Trump emphasised that this policy should encompass graduates from renowned institutions like Harvard and MIT as well as from junior colleges across the country. “It’s so sad when we lose people from Harvard, MIT, the greatest schools, and lesser schools that are phenomenal schools also,” Trump lamented on the All-In Podcast. “I think you should get, automatically, as part of your diploma, a green card to be able to stay in this country and that includes junior colleges, too.” A green card affords its holder permanent residency rights in the United States and represents a crucial step towards citizenship. Adding to the exodus of Indians who have already migrated to the US, over 200,000 Indian nationals are enrolled in institutes across the US in 2024, setting a new record. In fact, the significant surge in Indian students seeking education in the country between 2022-23 represented an unprecedented 35% increase from the year before that. The former US president specifically mentioned India and China, highlighting how talented individuals were unable to stay in the US because of current <keyword id="22151110" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="visa-policies" source="keywords">visa policies</keyword>. We can see how this may show him in a favourable light for green card aspirants. And while we’re not one to look a gift horse in the mouth, it is important to remember that Trump has made his discriminatory nature very public in several instances. He has also criticised the H-1B visa program, which tech companies favour for hiring foreign skilled workers, as detrimental to American prosperity. 200,000 H1-B visa holders hope US will extend status to September as June deadline comes to a close

Melissa Álvarez Torres and José Luis Olmos Hernández, both California residents, advertised in the Facebook group "Seguros Americanos Embarazo (American Pregnancy Insurance)," promising that their insurance would allow women to give birth legally in the states and have their hospital bills covered. According to court documents seen by Insider, many of the women who signed up had high-risk pregnancies, and were looking for insurance to cover the potentially costly birth, or to give birth in US hospitals, which are perceived to be safer. The majority of the victims held B1/2 visas - temporary non-immigrant visas for tourism or business purposes. After the women paid insurance premiums, ranging between $1,200 and $3,000, according to court documents, the couple filed their claims with the Medi-Cal Access Program, a California program that helps low-income women access affordable maternity care. Because the women signed up by Torres and Hernandez were not actually US residents, they did not actually qualify for the care.To get the claims through, the couple used the women's personal information to sign up to the government program without their knowledge. They also submitted doctored tax and employment documents, falsely identifying them as California residents. In all, Torres and Hernández submitted around 250 false applications, according to court documents. The couple pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit health care <keyword id="38935" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Fraud">fraud</keyword> and wire fraud. The couple agreed to pay back the state and individual victims $1.5 million in restitution, reported the San Diego Union-Tribune. Torres and Hernández each face up to 20 years in federal prison, and are scheduled to be sentenced in October. Technology companies depend on it to hire tens of thousands of employees each year from countries like India and China. "We recently determined that we needed to select additional registrations to reach the Fiscal Year (FY) 2022 numerical allocations. On July 28, we selected previously submitted electronic registrations using a random selection process," the USCIS said in a statement. "The petition filing period based on registrations selected on July 28 will begin on August 2 and close on November 3. Individuals with selected registrations will have their myUSCIS accounts updated to include a selection notice, which includes details of when and where to file," it said. The move by the USCIS to conduct the second lottery will provide another chance to several applicants, including hundreds of Indian IT professionals, who could not make it in the first random selection. The federal agency said that only those petitioners with selected registrations for FY 2022 are eligible to file H-1B cap-subject petitions. The initial filing period for those with selected registrations for FY 2022 was from April 1, 2021, through June 30, 2021. The USCIS said an H-1B cap-subject petition must be properly filed at the correct service center and within the filing period indicated on the relevant registration selection notice. Online filing is not available for H-1B petitions. Petitioners filing H-1B petitions must do so by paper and must include a printed copy of the applicable registration selection notice with the FY 2022 H-1B cap-subject petition. "Registration selection only indicates that petitioners are eligible to file H-1B cap-subject petitions; it does not indicate that the petition will be approved. Petitioners filing H-1B cap-subject petitions, including those petitions eligible for the advanced degree exemption, must still submit evidence and establish eligibility for petition approval based on existing statutory and regulatory requirements," the USCIS added. The H-1B visa is a non-immigrant visa that allows the US companies to employ foreign workers in speciality occupations that require theoretical or technical expertise. The technology companies depend on it to hire tens of thousands of employees each year from countries like India and China. <keyword id="368921" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="US-Citizenship-and-Immigration-Services">US Citizenship and Immigration Services</keyword> (USCIS) has said it has received a sufficient number of petitions needed to reach the <keyword id="10784391" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="congressionally">congressionally</keyword> mandated 65,000 H-1B visa regular cap and the 20,000 H-1B visa US advanced degree exemption, known as the master's cap, for fiscal year (FY) 2021. Successful applicants would be decided by a computerised draw of lots. "We have completed sending non-selection notifications to registrants' online accounts," a media release said. "We will continue to accept and process petitions that are otherwise exempt from the cap," it said. Petitions filed for current H-1B workers who have been counted previously against the cap, and who still retain their cap number, are exempt from the FY 2021 H-1B cap. The USCIS will continue to accept and process petitions filed to extend the amount of time a current H-1B worker may remain in the US and change the terms of employment for current H-1B workers. The <keyword id="60973" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Biden">Biden</keyword> administration this month announced that it was delaying the H-1B policy of the previous Trump administration on the allocation of the popular foreign work visas by continuing with the lottery system until December 31, 2021, to give the immigration agency more time to develop, test and implement the modifications to the registration system. On January 7, the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced to do away with the traditional lottery system in deciding the successful applicants for the H-1B visas. The Trump-era rule was scheduled to go into effect on March 9.
