CHENNAI: <keyword id="107835" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Nokia-India">Nokia India</keyword>, which is fighting several tax demands, fell into further turmoil after the head of its Chennai factory quit and workers alleged that they were being forced to take up an early retirement scheme. 
 
The mobile device maker, which is in trouble with taxmen over dues for royalty payments made to its parent company in Finland and allegations that it classified domestically sold units as exports, had offered a voluntary retirement scheme to its nearly 7,000 employees. 
 
“We can confirm that Prakash Katama (the factory head) is leaving the company, but will stay with us in a consultancy role for a fixed period of time,” a company spokeswoman told ET. Katama will be replaced by V Sembian, the head of product and process engineering at the unit, effective immediately, she said. 
 
Katama was appointed as the director of Nokia's Chennai facility in 2010. 
 
The company’s case against the Tamil Nadu government, which claimed that Nokia India owes it Rs 2,400 crore in taxes, came up for hearing in the Madras High Court on Tuesday. While Nokia’s counsel Arvind P Datar presented his arguments, the government counsel is likely to present his on Wednesday. 
 
Nokia, whose devices and services unit is being bought by Microsoft, is already fighting a Rs 21,000-crore claim by the income tax department over royalty payments. 
 
On Tuesday, employees at Nokia India’s facility near Chennai alleged company officials were forcing them to opt for the early retirement scheme offered last week. Nokia India’s VRS scheme comes into effect from Tuesday and is open till May 14. 
 
“They (the management) urged the employees to take up the VRS saying they would cut down transportation facilities to 40 km from 80 km,” said an employee, who did not wish to be identified. “They said they have received instructions from Finland (the parent company) to cut down the overall costs.” 
 
Nokia India provides transportation facilities to its nearly 7,000 workers, most of who are from small towns and villages near Chennai. 
 
The company denied forcing its employees. “We would like to clarify that we haven’t stopped bus or canteen facilities for our employees at Chennai factory,” the spokeswoman said. “Also, the voluntary retirement scheme is ‘voluntary’ for all factory employees.” 
 
Sources said the company has made two offers: one for permanent employees and the other for its nearly 700 trainees. Over 200 trainees have opted for the offer which will give them Rs 2 lakh as well as double the salary for the number of earned leaves, they added. 
 
“I think all the trainees will opt for this offer as they have no other choice,” said a source close to the developments at Nokia India’s factory who did not want to be identified.

HMD Global launches Nokia C20 Plus in India, ties up with Jio for offers

And <keyword id="107835" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Nokia-India">Nokia India</keyword> has already planned to bring its first Android based phone to India. The <keyword id="459" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="price">price</keyword> is believed to be kept at Rs 8,499, this is not as inexpensive as the Asha series but does fall under the budget category of Android phones. 
 The <keyword id="2034783" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nokia-X">Nokia X</keyword> has dual-SIM capabilities and has a 4-inch <keyword id="30450" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="40" keywordseo="Touch">touch</keyword> display. It runs on the 1 GHz Dual-core <keyword id="104695" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Qualcomm">Qualcomm</keyword> Snapdragon processor that is supported by 512 MB of RAM and 4 GB internal storage. The phone’s design is inspired by the Lumia series (which are known for using Windows Phone OS) and will be available in an array of colours. The company claims that the phone will give the user talk time of 13.3 hours and can stay awake for 28 days in standby mode. 
 Nokia has introduced a ripped down version of Android on this phone that will not have any <keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword> services on it. Even the app store is different. At MWC 2014, Nokia showcased two more phones (Nokia X+ and Nokia XL) along with Nokia X. There is no news of the other two being launched at the same time. However, we might just see a glimpse of the next two in the ‘X series’ of phones by Nokia at the event on 10 March.

In a bid to strengthen its 4G network and enhance 5G capabilities in India, Bharti Airtel has inked a $1 billion (nearly ₹7,636 crore), multi-year deal with Nokia to deploy the Finnish majors 5G-ready solutions across nine circles in the country. Nokia, which is the largest 4G vendor in Airtel network, will help lay the foundation for providing 5G connectivity in the future by deploying 300,000 radio units across several spectrum bands in those circles expected to be completed by 2022. Reliable industry sources told IANS on Tuesday that the deal size is approximately $1 billion. "We have been working with Nokia for more than a decade now and are delighted to use Nokia's SRAN products in further improving the capacity and coverage of our network as we prepare for the 5G era," Gopal Vittal, MD and CEO (India and South Asia) at Bharti Airtel, said in a statement. Nokia's SRAN solution helps operators manage their 2G, 3G and 4G networks from one platform reducing network complexity, increasing cost efficiencies and future-proofing investment. The Finnish company will be the sole provider of SRAN in the nine circles in the country. The Nokia supplied networks with their low latency and faster speeds will provide Airtel the best possible platform for when 5G networks launch across the country. "We have worked closely with Bharti Airtel for many years and are delighted to extend this long-standing partnership further. This project will enhance their current networks and deliver best-in-class connectivity to Airtel customers but also lay the foundations for 5G services in the future," explained Rajeev Suri, President and Chief Executive Officer at Nokia. India currently is the second-largest telecom market in the world and is expected to reach 920 million unique mobile customers by 2025, which will also include 88 million 5G connections according to the GSMA. The country is experiencing a massive increase in demand for data services with traffic increasing by 47 per cent in 2019 alone, according to Nokia's MBiT Index 2020. Nokia's SRAN solution will help Airtel to address this growing demand by adding network capacity and ensuring a superior quality of experience to its customers. The deal will also include Nokia's RAN equipment, including its AirScale Radio Access, AirScale BaseBand and NetAct OSS solution, which will help Airtel to monitor and manage its network effectively. Airtel signs ₹7,636 crore deal with Nokia to enhance 4G network, lay foundation for 5G network

There is a bad news for <keyword id="6354716" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nokia">Nokia</keyword> India. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Income+Tax+department+">Income Tax department</a> has slapped fresh tax notice on the firm, which wants the fresh demand to be included in the ongoing negotiations between India and Finland to resolve the Rs 2,000-crore tax dispute which was imposed earlier. 
 
According to a senior <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Finance+Ministry+">Finance Ministry</a> official, the fresh <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Finance+Ministry+">tax demands notice</a> was served to Nokia India for dispute relating to other assessment years, apart from the one being contested currently in ITAT. 
 
However, there is no information about the demand raised or the action that the IT department has proposed. 
 
In 2003, the department had slapped a tax notice of Rs 2,000 crore on Nokia's Indian subsidiary for violating the withholding tax norms since 2006 while making royalty payments to the parent company in Finland. 
 
Nokia's mobile unit has now been sold off to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Microsoft">Microsoft</a>, but the Chennai factory, which is involved in the tax dispute was not included in the deal. 
 
The company wants the notices to be included in the ongoing discussions under the Mutual Agreement Procedure (MAP), said the official, adding senior officials from India and Finland would meet soon to decide on the course of action. 
 
After being asked about the notice served to the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=telecom+company">telecom company</a>, it said: "Nokia has indeed received a claim from the tax authorities - it is largely about the same dispute as earlier, so we have nothing to add." 
 The government has been emphasising on early resolution of pending <keyword id="411664" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="tax-disputes">tax disputes</keyword> with a view to make the tax regime more predictable and investor friendly. 
 
Meanwhile, MAP is an alternative available to taxpayers for resolving disputes involving double taxation. However, there is no time frame for resolving cases under MAP negotiations.

Mobile handset manufacturing giant <keyword id="6354716" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nokia">Nokia</keyword>, which has extensive India business, has alleged that India's tax claims against the Finnish firm’s subsidiaries don't comply with its bilateral pact with <keyword id="6374076" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Finland">Finland</keyword> and has threatened to file an international arbitration in case the issue is not settled amicably. 
 “India's decision to change tax laws with retrospective effect and substantial tax claims against Nokia subsidiaries don't comply with its obligations under the <keyword id="2241526" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="India-Finland-Bilateral-Investment-Treaty">India-Finland Bilateral Investment Treaty</keyword> (BIT), and hurt the Helsinki-based firm's investments in India,” Nokia said in a letter to the Prime Minister's Office. 
 
It has now asked for negotiations under Article 9(2) of BIT to settle the tax disputes involving its manufacturing plant in Chennai. The company has also sought an appointment with the government to begin talks. In the letter, Nokia has said if an "amicable settlement" is not reached, the company has the right to "submit claims to international arbitration." 
 
"The letter seeks amicable resolution of the current tax disputes,” a Nokia spokesperson added. 
 The letter, dated April 30, was sent by the law firm Allen &amp; Overy LLP. "The Indian government has recently made certain changes to its tax legislation. In particular, in the Finance Act (2012), India retrospectively amended Section 9(1) (VI) of the <keyword id="6370810" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Income-Tax-Act">Income Tax Act</keyword> (1961). In addition, Indian tax authorities have raised substantial tax demands against Nokia and its subsidiaries, seeking allegedly unpaid taxes, imposed freezing orders on various Nokia assets and failed to comply with various other obligations owed to Nokia's subsidiaries," the letter said. 
 
Nokia might serve the arbitration notice within three months of sending the initial letter, a source informed. 
 
"These and other measures taken by India substantially alter the legal framework for the investments that Nokia has made in India. India's actions are not in compliance with its obligations under the BIT, and they have caused serious and substantial harm to Nokia's investments," it added. 
 
India alleged Nokia had evaded taxes on software downloaded on handsets, manufactured at its Chennai unit, and demanded more than Rs 21,000 crore.

Nokia May Seek International Arbitration To
Resolve Multi-billion-dollar Tax Row In India

Labour union representatives of the Nokia factory near Chennai met Union <keyword id="91" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Commerce-Minister">Commerce Minister</keyword> <keyword id="129243" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nirmala-Sitharaman">Nirmala Sitharaman</keyword>, urging her to ensure that the factory doesn’t shut down. 
 
They even suggested that the government should take over the plant, if nothing else materialises. Sitharaman assured that she would take up the matter with the Finance Ministry. Nokia has announced to suspend operations at that factory from November 1. 
 A Soundararajan, MLA and head of the <keyword id="2565701" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nokia-India-Workers-Union">Nokia India Workers Union</keyword>, said they had also met the industries and labour minister of Tamil Nadu. 
 
Around 6,000 jobs are at stake due to the closure.

Nearly 2,000 employees of <keyword id="6354716" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nokia">Nokia</keyword> India's Chennai facility have accepted the company’s voluntary retirement scheme (<keyword id="6362193" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="VRS">VRS</keyword>), even as many of them are seeking help from the government in a bid to save their jobs. 
 
Senior members of the factory's labour union told Economic Times that the ‘apathy’ of the authorities forced many employees to choose the voluntary retirement scheme. However, the precise number of these employees could not be immediately ascertained. 
 
"Since nobody has offered us any help, what assurance can we give to our employees and on what basis can we ask them not to accept the VRS?" asked a senior union member, requesting anonymity. "We are still trying to get some help, some support, but nobody seems to care," he added. 
 Earlier, the company’s Chennai plant marked India’s significance as a key market and manufacturing hub for Nokia, which was once the world's largest handset-maker before being overtaken by stalwarts like <keyword id="10591" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Samsung">Samsung</keyword> and <keyword id="6354427" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Apple">Apple</keyword>. 
 
Due to tax disputes, the Chennai facility was left out of a global Microsoft takeover of Nokia's devices and services units. The unit has about 7,000 workers and the majority of them are women. Nokia India announced the voluntary retirement scheme last month in order to curtail its operations. "All we can share right now is that the VRS package is being offered till May 14," a Nokia spokesperson said in a statement. 
 
Nokia India has been urging its employees to take up the VRS offer, hinting that they may not be entitled to any other compensation once the offer is closed, senior members of the union said. According to them, the company has informed that it has orders for just 1.5 million handsets, which will require only about 1,300 employees. 
 
"The management has conveyed to the employees that there is no future for this facility anymore," another source added.

Nokia PureBook X14 laptop specification and price in India

<keyword id="2460472" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ajey-Mehta">Ajey Mehta</keyword>, head of <keyword id="28250" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Microsoft-India">Microsoft India</keyword>'s mobile division, will be moving to HMD Global along with 60-70 sales and marketing staff. HMD Global is the company recently created by Microsoft to bring back Nokia-branded phones into global markets, including India. 
 As per sources, the switch would be done after Microsoft's deal to sell its feature phone business to <keyword id="6354671" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Foxconn">Foxconn</keyword> and HMD closes in the second half of this year. The deal, however, doesn’t include Nokia's phone manufacturing plant based in Chennai, because it was frozen by tax authorities due to an ongoing Rs 20,000-crore tax dispute. 
 
While initially the team led by Mehta will be responsible for taking the Nokia-brand feature phones forward in India, they would later add Android smartphones to their portfolio; however, no timeline has yet been announced by the company regarding the same.
