Investing in the stock market is the go-to answer for many who want great returns on their hard-earned money. However, not everyone is a stock market expert and people tend to look for guidance at times. And while there are many good financial advisors out there, some are fraudsters looking for a way to rob people. Thus, in times when online scams in India are on the rise, one should be cautious of who they trust with their money. Simply believing strangers on the internet could mean huge losses at times and this is exactly what happened with a Noida-based woman who wanted to make some extra money by investing in the share market via an app. <h2>Woman loses over Rs 69 lakh in <keyword id="7292336" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="stock-market-scam" source="Orion">stock market scam</keyword></h2>According to a report in HT, a 32-year-old woman from <keyword id="20142852" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="greater-noida-west" source="keywords">Greater Noida West</keyword> was defrauded of more than Rs 69 lakh by scammers posing as stock market investment advisors. This incident, which unfolded over the course of several weeks, underscores the need for heightened vigilance and cybersecurity awareness in an increasingly interconnected society. Stuti, the victim, resides with her family in Amaatra Homes, Sector 10. Her ordeal began in June when she was added to an unknown WhatsApp group that offered training on earning profits in the stock market. The group, which appeared to be legitimate, provided her with initial training sessions that built trust and credibility. The scammers, masquerading as financial experts, promised Stuti a staggering 300 percent return on investments made through a specially designed mobile application. <h2>Scammers promised high returns</h2>Encouraged by the initial promise of high returns, Stuti downloaded the fraudulent application and made her first investment of Rs 1 lakh. To her astonishment, the app showed a profit of Rs 50,000 the very next day, further enticing her to invest more. The scammers then added her and her husband to another private WhatsApp group, where they were presented with a new profit plan requiring an investment of Rs 30 lakh. Trusting the system, they invested Rs 20 lakh. On July 16, the fraudsters introduced a new scheme involving an Initial Public Offering (IPO) and the allotment of one lakh shares. They asked the couple to invest an additional Rs 1.19 crore, promising a profit of Rs 50 lakh from their recent investments. The couple, now heavily invested both financially and emotionally, were then informed that they needed to pay an additional Rs 48 lakh to secure their profits. When Stuti and her husband expressed their inability to invest further and requested to withdraw their profits, the scammers cited convoluted terms and conditions to refuse their request. Desperate to recoup their investments, the couple broke their fixed deposits, liquidated mutual funds, and borrowed money from friends and family, eventually sending a total of Rs 69.53 lakh to the fraudsters through multiple transactions. It wasn't until the couple was asked to pay an additional Rs 21 lakh in taxes and other charges that they realised they had been duped. The scammers, who had promised them a profit of Rs 4 crore, vanished, leaving the couple in financial ruin. On August 2, an FIR was registered under sections 318 (cheating and dishonesty) and 319 (cheating by personation) of the BNS, along with relevant sections of the IT Act, at the cybercrime police station. The police have launched an investigation.

A 45-year-old clinical researcher has reportedly lost ₹2.1 crore over the span of a month. According to a<a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/cities/pune/pune-researcher-loses-rs-2-1-crore-to-cyber-fraud-9090110/"> report</a> by The Indian Express, the victim fell prey to a fake <keyword id="903234" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="investment-scam" source="Orion">investment scam</keyword>, where the scammers used the name of a well-known US-based venture capital fund to deceive the victim. The victim has registered a complaint with the Wakad police station in Pimpri-Chinchwad, Pune. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="What is the fake investment scam?" comment="subhead" text="What is the fake investment scam?">What is the fake investment scam?</cmsannotation> The victim started investing in the stock market in 2023 as he was working from home. In November 2023, the victim came across an advertisement on a social media platform. In this advertisement, a share market investment platform was advertised and the name of a well-known venture capital firm based out of the US was mentioned alongside. The platform offered online tutorials for share market investment and promised to help the victim build a good investment portfolio. When he clicked the ad, the victim was redirected to a WhatsApp group, which he joined. The admins of the group then shared online tutorials and guides for investment. The members were also encouraged to join the company’s platform for investment. The victim was then directed to download an application on their phone and then asked to make large investments on the application. Over the next few weeks, the victim reportedly transferred ₹2.15 crore to the platform to make investments. This includes money received from sale of property and loans worth ₹70 lakh taken for investments. The victim was then reportedly asked to invest an additional ₹4.33 crore in an initial public offering (IPO) of an oil company. When the victim was unable to do so, he was informed that his initial investment had been frozen. The victim then tried to call the numbers that he had communicated with on WhatsApp, but was unable to do so. Upon further investigation, he found that the platform had no connection to the venture capital fund. Upon realising this, the victim approached the police, who found the fraudsters had created fake social media profiles to scam the victim. Other sources who spoke to The Hollywood Reporter said they also trusted the actor with their money because he was listed as a founding investment partner on the Producers Market website.A spokesperson for Producers Market told Insider in a statement that when the company discovered that Bryan was offering the nonexistent tokens, it "immediately issued a cease-and-desist demand to him." "Mr. Bryan misrepresented our company without our knowledge, participation or permission," John Collins, a spokesperson for Producers Market, said. "When we found out, we immediately issued a cease-and-desist demand to him. This activity is unacceptable and not a reflection of our mission to support the wellbeing of farmers and our food systems." <keyword id="28423" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="vedanta" source="Orion">Vedanta</keyword> group firm <keyword id="332980" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="hindustan-zinc-ltd" source="Orion">Hindustan Zinc Ltd</keyword> on Wednesday said its board has approved a second interim <keyword id="56600" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dividend" source="Orion">dividend</keyword> of Rs 6 per equity share for FY24, amounting to Rs 2,535.19 crore. "The board of directors of the company through resolution passed by circulation on Wednesday, December 6, 2023 have approved 2nd interim dividend of Rs 6 per equity share i.e. 300 per cent on face value of Rs 2 per share for the Financial Year 2023-24 amounting to Rs 2,535.19 crores," the company said in a stock exchange filing. The interim dividend will be paid within stipulated timelines, it said. Tate has become an icon for a new generation of the <a href="https://www.internetmatters.org/hub/news-blogs/what-is-the-manosphere-and-why-is-it-a-concern/">"manosphere,</a>" gaining millions of followers across social media platforms, and being embraced by men's rights activists and far-right influencers in the process.Although much of the 35-year-old's content is fairly anodyne — generic tips on self-motivation and wealth that tend to cater to young men — he's become notorious for his misogynistic and violent comments about women. In one video, he <a href="https://www.youtube.com/shorts/wGdp8n246f8">asserts that 18-year-olds</a> are more attractive than women in their 20s because "they've been through less dick."It appears there's more of an appetite than ever before for Tate's particular brand of misogyny. He surged from 1 million Instagram followers in early June to over 4.6 million in August, according to <a href="https://socialblade.com/instagram/user/cobratate/monthly">the data analytics website SocialBlade</a>. His account grew by 70,000 to 100,000 followers a day in mid-August.Though Tate hasn't gone super-viral with his own posts on the platform, TikTok has become a primary hub for Tate-related content. Through his online program called "Hustlers University," Tate uses multi-level marketing-like tactics to encourage viewers to join his army of fans. Numerous fan pages have popped up to spread the Tate gospel of hyper-male affirmation — sharing affiliate links to the "university" and contributing to his ubiquity on the platform.Alexander Reid Ross, an instructor at Portland State University who's spent time researching far-right groups like the Proud Boys, told Insider that Tate "took the <a href="https://www.internetmatters.org/hub/news-blogs/what-is-the-manosphere-and-why-is-it-a-concern/">'manosphere'</a> by storm" and has capitalized on social media platforms' shift in recent years towards promoting video content."This guy's reach is really expanding, and it's really influencing teenagers," said Ross, who described Tate as a "one-stop hate shop."<h2>Andrew Tate has an extensive history of bigoted comments and controversies offline</h2>Tate, who did not respond to Insider's request for comment, has a history of courting controversy and promoting a misogynistic worldview. He first made headlines during the 2016 season of the British reality show "Big Brother," when he was kicked off of the show after a video surfaced showing him striking a woman with a belt. At the time, Tate <a href="https://www.indy100.com/viral/andrew-tate-fight-big-brother">said the video</a> was part of a consensual role play with the woman.In 2017, Tate sparked backlash during the rise of the #MeToo movement <a href="https://metro.co.uk/2017/10/19/big-brothers-andrew-tate-says-women-should-bear-responsibility-for-being-raped-in-vile-tweets-7011756/">for saying</a> rape victims must "bear some responsibility" for putting themselves "in a position to be raped." Tate has also <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NmPrt1due3s">appeared on Infowars with Alex Jones</a>.In 2017, despite being a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XDB8X7kudYQ">major supporter of former President Donald Trump</a>, Tate moved to Romania. He said in a now-deleted video that Romania's comparatively relaxed sexual assault laws were "<a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/gammasecretkings/comments/u3ih83/andrew_tate_explains_the_primary_reason_he_moved/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">40% of the reason</a>" he moved to the country. But in April, police raided Tate's home in Romania as part of a human-trafficking investigation. <a href="https://www.gandul.ro/actualitate/anchetatorii-au-descins-in-casa-din-pipera-a-luptatorului-tristan-tate-fost-iubit-al-biancai-dragusanu-ar-fi-sechetrat-o-femeie-alaturi-de-fratele-sau-19775283?utm_source=video_homepage&amp;utm_medium=clicks_video&amp;utm_campaign=video">Video from the raid</a> showed police officers shoving Tate and his brother into vans, <a href="https://www.thedailybeast.com/police-raid-maga-king-of-toxic-masculinity-in-human-trafficking-investigation">the Daily Beast reported</a>. Romania's Directorate for Investigating Organised Crime and Terrorism told The Daily Beast the raid was part of an investigation into claims that a woman was being held at the Tate house against her will, as well as looking into "crimes of human trafficking and rape." Neither Tristan nor Andrew Tate has been arrested or charged with any crime.<h2>How Tate's videos have taken over the internet</h2>Although Tate has been actively promoting himself online for years, it wasn't until several months ago that he started to reach a new level of popularity. His rise took place mostly on TikTok, where his throng of devotees call him "Top G" and spam comment sections under his videos with "Tate W."The hashtag "AndrewTate" had over 13 billion views on TikTok as of mid-August, and a hashtag for one of his catchphrases, "escape the matrix," also had over 200 million views. Many of the top videos using the hashtag mock Tate, or gesture at the hypocrisy in some of the comments he's made.<div type="image" title="Andrew Tate hashtag" height="1079" width="1439" msid="93648326" hostid="261" sizebytes="143050"></div>But there are also many popular videos and accounts — like "frequency.clips," which has 100,000 followers, and "tate_grindset," which has over 130,000 followers — dedicated to spreading Tate's videos and thoughts. Those include him saying <a href="https://www.youtube.com/shorts/tVMfbGzFFm4">he wouldn't perform CPR</a> on someone suffering a heart attack unless they're a "hot female" and <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hyeprM1jHgs">suggesting that</a> a woman's genitals belong to her boyfriend. "A cottage industry of dudes online who are sharing Tate's videos" has sprung up, Ross said, because members of Tate's Hustlers University receive money if they get people to join his program using their proxy. <h2>What is Hustlers University?</h2>The main business that Tate pushes upon viewers is his "Hustlers University," which is a paid online course that launched last year on Discord. His website's landing page for "Hustlers University 2.0" promises a "community where me and dozens of War Room soldiers will teach YOU exactly how to make money."To join Hustlers University, members pay a $49 monthly fee. They kick off their membership by taking a quiz to determine their availability and how much money they can invest. Each user is put into a specific category with "learning channels" that Tate claims will serve them best. The channels offer advice from "experts" on a variety of topics, including cryptocurrency, copywriting, real estate, and stock analysis. Tate <a href="https://www.cobratate.com/hustlers-university-2-0">claims on his website</a> that every "professor is verified by me personally," and said in <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2lRzkIMyxT8">early July</a> that the program had over 80,000 members. (Insider could not independently verify that number.)A number of critics and reviews of the university allege that Hustlers University is a <a href="https://unherd.com/2022/08/welcome-to-hustlers-university/">scam,</a> and suggest those praising the program only do so because they promote affiliate links, which earn the poster money if someone decides to join the course. TikToker <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@benleavitt/video/7123019100938423557?is_from_webapp=1&amp;sender_device=pc&amp;web_id=7127642013554361862">Ben Leavitt recently explained how Hustlers University is "a pyramid scheme for sigma males."</a> The video claimed that all members of Hustlers University are "given the opportunity to be an affiliate for the course," which means that a member will make 50% of the fee from people they bring into Hustlers University. Those people will then make 50% of anyone they refer to the course to. In that way, the program functions similarly to a multi-level marketing scheme, where users primarily make money by convincing others to join their network. Charles Floate, <a href="https://www.charlesfloate.com/hustlers-university">a blogger who said he participated in Hustlers University</a>, reviewed the course and said "it's mostly filled with self-promotions from desperate 20-something males looking to build a personality when they're unsure of who they are and what they want to become, so feed off Tate as their inspiration for who they now are and aspire to be in the future."Tate recognizes that much of the success of Hustlers University is down to his social media strategy. On a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hyeprM1jHgs">recent podcast</a> with Barstool Sports' Dave Portnoy, Tate said he "changed my approach toward social media" earlier this year and "ended up absolutely everywhere. Now people complain that they see me more than they see their own father, and they can't get rid of me."While he's seemingly unavoidable on TikTok, Tate's content hasn't taken off as much on other platforms, but there are still channels with tens of thousands of subscribers on YouTube centered around propagating his life tips. He recently appeared on multiple popular YouTube podcasts, including NELK, Stand Out TV, and Portnoy — all of whom receive millions of views on their videos. The sheer speed with which Tate has risen, despite or because of his outre opinions, has inspired other fringe figures, says Ross."You have various antisemites and fascists and reactionaries of all sorts and flavors who are looking at what they call 'the Tate phenomenon' and hoping to get in on the action," Ross said.<h2>Tate's success comes despite TikTok's community guidelines</h2>Though Tate does have a TikTok account under the username <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@cobratate_official">@CobraTate_Official</a>, the majority of Tate-related clips on the platform do not come from his own account.Most of Tate's rhetoric appears to break <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/community-guidelines?lang=en">TikTok community guidelines</a>, which prohibit content that "praises, promotes, glorifies, or supports any hateful ideology," including misogyny. The app also bans accounts made for "spam or fake engagement" and "impersonation" but permits profiles that are obviously fan-based. Several charities in the UK <a href="https://www.indy100.com/viral/andrew-tate-tiktok-ban">have called for TikTok to do more to tackle Tate's content</a>, including <a href="https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/andrew-tate-tiktok-ban-comments-b2140748.html">White Ribbon UK</a>, a charity that aims to end violence against women, as well as <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11091039/Andrew-Tate-TikTok-faces-calls-remove-misogynistic-videos-outspoken-British-influencer.html?ns_mchannel=rss&amp;ns_campaign=1490&amp;ito=1490">Rape Crisis England and Wales, and Women's Aid</a>, both of which tackle misogyny and domestic abuse.Other social media influencers are asking TikTok and other social media platforms to do more to impede the spread of this content. Instagram user <a href="https://www.instagram.com/mattxiv/">Matt Bernstein, who has more than 1.2 million followers and often posts about social justice issues</a>, recently published <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/ChA8mOSpiKF/">an infographic</a> describing Tate as "teaching young boys to be violent misogynists."At the time of writing, Tate's TikTok account is still up and has 400,000 followers, while various other Tate-oriented accounts continue to rack up views in the millions. Ross worries that beyond promoting misogynistic and offensive opinions, Tate could act as a gateway to more extreme views for those who dabble in the far-right.Many far-right influencers "look at him and recognize a like-minded soul," Ross said. "It's firmly their hope that people will watch Tate and then they'll expand their horizons into far more hateful, or I should say even more hateful, content."

'One-stop hate shop': Andrew Tate's rise to TikTok superstardom is fueling violent misogyny and men's rights extremism

<ul><li>Many research studies conducted across the world show that women are more stressed and discouraged since the pandemic began as they take on an increasing amount of responsibility at home and in their careers.</li><li>The ad, media and marketing industry has a lot more women today than a decade ago. However, many drop out by the time they reach mid-management levels, primarily due to the lack of flexible hours and ever-increasing workload.</li><li>So this Women’s Day, we decided to speak to women in leadership positions about how we can make women feel welcome at workplaces. They told us how employers can support women and create a more high-trust, inclusive environment for the future.</li><li>The women leaders we spoke to believe organizations need to prioritize training more women, to prepare them for leadership roles, and this should be a part of the company’s culture.</li></ul>In the work-from-home era, the responsibility of unpaid domestic work and raising kids has fallen on Indian women more than men. This has affected their ambitions and careers, widening the gender gap at the workplace. A McKinsey report found that women around the world have been deeply affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has heightened the large and small inequalities—both at work and at home—that women face daily. One in four women are considering leaving the workforce or downshifting their careers versus one in five men. Women only form less than a third of the workforce in marketing, sales and less than a fifth in data analysis, and artificial intelligence, revealed a World Economic Forum’s 2020 study. Another survey by Deloitte found that 51% of women are less optimistic about their career prospects than they were before the pandemic. A lot of women who have chosen to stick to their jobs have missed out on a fair promotion or raise. A LinkedIn report shows that 85% of women in India have missed out on a raise, promotion because of their gender. Women’s careers are observed to have been more adversely affected despite increasing flexibility at work, as 68% of women and 74% of working mothers in India say it is difficult to balance career and familial responsibilities today. More than 7 in 10 women and working mothers in India also say that household responsibilities often come in their way of their career progression. As you move up in the hierarchy of the corporate world, there’s also a lack of women leaders in the upper rungs. As per Egon Zehnder Global Diversity Report 2020, women in India occupy 5% of executive chairs and 10% of non-executive chairs. The report indicates that only 11% of committee chairs are held by women, while the number stands at 27.3% globally. Having said that, the world of advertising, marketing and media has seen a lot of <keyword id="3275573" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="women-in-leadership-roles" source="Orion">women in leadership roles</keyword>. While we are still far from an equal man-woman ratio in the industry, it is heartening to see more and more women take the top spots. On the other hand, advertising and media are industries that hold a lot of power in shifting perceptions and mending beliefs. The advertising industry was infamous for perpetuating gender stereotypes -- from a sacrificing mother to a man being the bread-earner, the portrayal of women has remained very shallow for years. How brands depict women and their role in society has evolved today, she is independent, she has a voice and is slowly learning to care less about society’s judgement, but we haven’t taken a big leap yet. She is still a woman who is ‘aesthetically pleasing,’ fair-skinned, doesn’t come from a minority community and is a little far from real. There’s almost no progress towards including transwomen in women’s day ads or communication throughout the year. Once we achieve an equal number of gender representation inside Indian advertising agencies, media organisations and the marketing world, there will be diverse opinions in a brainstorming session, leading to better B2C communication. So this women’s day, we decided to speak to women in leadership positions about how we can make women feel welcome at workplaces. They told us how employers can support women and create a more high-trust, inclusive environment during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. The changing environment requires leadership that is driven by adaptability, agility and ambition. In the 21st century companies will need purpose, innovation and balance to achieve the top position, and the right time to bring women to lead the next generation of business growth. Secondly, by promoting diversity and opening leadership positions for women and third, we can improve the pay scale and inculcate mentorship for potential women leaders. Thankfully, in the Media industry, with the inclusion of advertising &amp; marketing, there have been plenty of examples of women super achievers acting as role models for younger women which has led to greater gender parity, but women leaders still need to play a major role in supporting and seeing to it that more leaders emerge from the shadows of doubt and stereotypes to claim their rightful places. It is heartening to see more and more women leaders at Radio City and Midday and all of us here are committed to diversity and excellence. Building a positive mindset for diversity at all levels in an organisation goes a long way in ensuring an equal workplace. Strong women leaders in the organisation act as role models for women aspiring to reach the top. They also help in providing a more empathetic environment which is required at certain delicate stages of a woman employee’s career. And lastly, they provide the much needed confidence both for the women employees and the organisation by being a case study in excellence. At Radio City, a large number of leadership positions are held by women which motivates and inspires the mid-level and entry-level women employees to dream big. Diversity has many virtues and numerous reports time and again have proved that a diverse organisation is a better organisation. Radio City was amongst ‘India’s Best Workplaces for Women in 2019.’ Additionally, in 2020, Radio City ranked 4th in ‘Best Large Workplaces in Asia’, according to the GPTW survey. The industry also needs to take steps to stop showcasing and representing women in stereotypical ways. The truth is women need to start taking credit for their work, brag and self-promote. What men need to understand is with diversity creativity and innovation only booms. I personally feel advertising, media and marketing industries are more unstructured, and there is no one to help you climb that ladder. You will have to do it yourself. More so we need more women, to help support and mentor other women. I think to be a safe and inclusive environment, we really need to listen to our employees. I have always said that my employees are my first customers. Goals and expectations need to be set mutually, team members need to appreciate each other and there has to be a certain level of trust within the team. Megha Agarwal, CXO-Growth, Meesho: In my last 12 years of working, I have seen many smart women entering the workforce but also taking a step back and stepping out, especially at two pivotal points – marriage and motherhood. The societal maxim is such that it places higher expectations on women, compelling them to juggle many roles – wife, mother, primary caregiver among others. What is imperative is to create support structures that empower them to strike the perfect balance between personal and professional commitments. An example on this front could be Meesho’s recent boundaryless workplace model, enabling people to work from home/ anywhere so that it gives flexibility to facilitate adjustments. Additionally, we, as employers, also need to make a perception shift towards sabbaticals taken by women to rear children. Prosecutors said he used fake and altered documents, as well as aliases, to support those fraudulent applications.Prosecutors say that Marnell then spent hundreds of thousands of dollars from the fraudulent loan proceeds at the Bellagio Hotel &amp; Casino in Las Vegas, and other gambling establishments, as recently as last weekend. He also moved millions of dollars of other funds to his brokerage account, where he made "risky stock market bets," prosecutors say.The funds are part of the federal Paycheck Protection Program (<keyword id="6361580" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="ppp">PPP</keyword>), designed to offer relief to small businesses impacted by the coronavirus.<h2>Prosecutors are going after people who use the loans for fraud</h2>This is not the first time someone's been charged with allegedly taking advantage of the PPP program. The indictment says Tubbs falsely reported that the Little Piglet Soap Company had 36 or 56 employees with an average monthly payroll of $165,750 and that Suga Girl Customs had 210 employees with an average monthly payroll of $607,555. But most of these are just passing fads that only serve to sap your time and drain your bank account.
We've put together a list of some of the worst <keyword id="6354750" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="health">health</keyword> trends that still persist today.
<h3 class="slide-title">Coconut Water</h3>
Coconut water may be nature's version of Gatorade, but some brands have already caught fire for over-hyping the nutrient content. 
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/rihannas-favorite-coconut-water-will-pay-10m-to-settle-suit-over-super-hydrating-claims-2012-2#ixzz1sQd2Pj36" target="_blank">Vita Coco agreed to settle</a> a $10 million class action lawsuit over an independent study that showed the drinks didn't pack near as many electrolytes as advertisements implied.
Plus, some coconut water products are also loaded with added sugar. Instead, pick up your own young green coconuts on the cheap from an Asian produce market. Just <a href="http://southeastasianfood.about.com/od/dessertsfruitsanddrinks/ss/OpenYoungCoco_2.htm" target="_blank">crack them open with a cleaver</a>, and pop in a straw. 
<h3>All-Natural Foods</h3>
<a href="http://health.yahoo.net/experts/eatthis/8-food-trends-2011-will-make-you-fat-or-keep-you-skinny-2012" target="_blank">More Americans</a> may be going au naturel, but what are you really paying for?
There's no clear-cut regulation on what makes food "natural," which means just about any company can slap that label on its packages, add a fancy "green" design, and jack up the price.
Says Andrew Schrage of <a href="http://www.moneycrashers.com/" target="_blank">MoneyCrashers</a>: "Before buying any food that is touted as being 'all natural,' take a look at the ingredient list before you check out. Keep in mind that butter and salt are indeed natural ingredients. So stocking up on natural foods may not achieve anything other than increasing your grocery bill." (Not to mention, your waistline.)
<h3 class="slide-title">Weight-Loss Wardrobes</h3>
When it comes to ridiculous-looking toning shoes and clothing designed to help shed pounds faster, you might want to hold off. 
Reebok's already paid $25 million to consumers for allegedly over-marketing the weight loss power of its toning shoes. And <a href="http://www.shape.com/latest-news-trends/toning-clothing-does-it-really-boost-calorie-burn" target="_blank">the one study</a> that seems to support the claim that tight-fitting threads help burn more calories only involved about 15 participants.
"I think there are much simpler and less expensive ways the average person can bump up calorie burn and build strength," says <a href="http://www.shape.com/latest-news-trends/toning-clothing-does-it-really-boost-calorie-burn" target="_blank">Shape.com's Liz Neporent</a>. "For instance, <a href="http://www.shape.com/latest-news-trends/toning-clothing-does-it-really-boost-calorie-burn#" class="kLink">interval training</a> and hill work. These workouts certainly have the science behind them."
<h3 class="slide-title">Hormone Injections</h3>
People really will do anything to shed pounds, even if it means injecting themselves with hormones made from a woman's placenta.
The FDA ordered companies to stop selling HCG (a protein made in the placenta and passed through pregnant women's urine) after it was used in conjunction with low-calorie <keyword id="6358230" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="diet">diet</keyword> regimens. A <a href="http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=hcg&amp;hl=en&amp;prmd=imvns&amp;bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_cp.,cf.osb&amp;um=1&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;tbm=shop&amp;cid=881720153146005695&amp;sa=X&amp;ei=dN-NT9fON8Xz0gHYvM2dDw&amp;ved=0CHsQ8wIwBQ" target="_blank">40-day kit</a> sells for $120, but the hormone's only been approved for use in fertility treatments.
Per the <a href="http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/hcg-diet/an02091" target="_blank">MayoClinic</a>: "HCG is not approved for over-the-counter use, nor has it been proved to work for weight loss. Companies that sell over-the-counter HCG weight-loss products are breaking the law."
<h3 class="slide-title">Detox Diets</h3>
Here's a trend that makes nutritionists' blood boil: the idea that people can purge their bodies of toxins by consuming different variations of liquid diets. 
From the cabbage soup plan to the <a href="http://www.shape.com/celebrities/celebrity-photos/detox-and-cleanse-diets-should-you-try-these-popular-celeb-diets?page=3" target="_blank">infamous "Master Cleanse</a>," there's hardly any science to back them up, says <a href="http://www.essentialnutritionforyou.com/" target="_blank">Essential Nutrition for You</a>'s Rania Batayneh.
"What consumers need to know is that your body naturally detoxifies itself through our lungs, skin, and kidneys," she said. "Sweat it out, breathe it out, and eliminate. Eating a clean diet daily will give you the feeling you are looking forward to at the end of your depriving cleanse, so get started. Besides, cleanses are unnatural and typically based on eliminating food groups and/or foods altogether." 
<h3 class="slide-title">Gluten-free Diets</h3>
Batayneh calls this one of the worst <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/dont-get-suckered-into-weight-loss-scams-2011-12" target="_blank">weight-loss myths</a> out there and another attempt to play on the low-carb fad sparked by the Atkin's diet. 
"A gluten-free diet does not necessarily mean a low-carb diet," she says. "A person who eats gluten-free can ingest plenty of carbohydrates from gluten-free breads, pastas, cereals, and baked goods, as well as vegetables, fruits, beans, and legumes."
Gluten-free lifestyles have been proven to ease symptoms of Autism in children and, obviously, are vital to anyone with a gluten allergy. But "if you don't have a medical reason for following a gluten-free diet, there's probably no benefit," <a href="http://www.eatingwell.com/nutrition_health/nutrition_news_information/the_13_biggest_nutrition_and_food_myths_busted?page=14" target="_blank">says Tricia Thompson, R.D.</a>, founder of <a href="http://www.glutenfreedietitian.com/" target="_blank">glutenfreedietitian.com</a>.
<h3>Snack Packs</h3>
Weight loss has much to do with portion control, but those helpful little 100-calorie snack packs are nothing but a big budget suck.
"We have portion distortion in this nation, and even though I like that [100-calorie packs] are pre-portioned, that can be a more expensive option," Batayneh says.
Instead, keep a measuring cup in your desk drawer to scoop out perfect portions of whatever you're munching on at work (almonds, trail mix, etc.) rather than paying more for packaging. 
<h3 class="slide-title">Acai Berries</h3>
There are no clinical studies that support claims that antioxidants in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/this-is-the-scam-that-never-ends-yes-it-goes-on-and-on-my-friends-2012-1" target="_blank">Acai berries will make you live longer</a>, help you fly, smooth your crow's feet, or anything else.
"We've had waves of costly 'super juices' in the marketplace that were nothing more than fruit juice," says clinical nutritionist <a href="http://stellametsovas.com/" target="_blank">Stella Metsovas</a>. "Testing chemical properties in a laboratory is completely different once the product is pasteurized. There is no possibility of processing a super-fruit to compete with the natural form (i.e. a handful of berries)." 
The Acai berry's popularity in the U.S. spawned a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/this-is-the-scam-that-never-ends-yes-it-goes-on-and-on-my-friends-2012-1" target="_blank">new wave of consumer scams</a> involving "free trial offers" for smoothies, juices, and other products.
<h3 class="slide-title">Diet Drinks</h3>
Not only will they destroy your teeth, but a <a href="http://ww2.aievolution.com/ada1101/index.cfm?do=abs.viewAbs&amp;abs=10061">study by the American Diabetes Association</a> pretty much proved diet soda drinkers were <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/diet-soda-makes-you-fat-2011-6" target="_blank">packing on pounds</a>, not shedding them. 
Zero-calorie sodas <a href="http://articles.businessinsider.com/2011-06-29/news/30010277_1_diet-soda-weight-gain-aspartame#ixzz1sQb33dSJ" target="_blank">have also been linked</a> to a slew of nasty diseases, including diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.
