"With any joy, he'll be surrounded by a lot of girls. But a lot has changed since they last sold concert tickets.</p><p>The "Wonderwall" singers announced this week they would embark on a reunion tour in the UK. It'll be the first time lead brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher will play together in over 15 years. The tour will have 17 dates in Cardiff, Manchester, Edinburgh, and Dublin starting July 4 next year.</p><p>Oasis, one of the most popular bands at the end of the 20th century, offered pre-sale tickets beginning Friday and quickly stepped into a 21st-century mire: online surge pricing.</p><p>Surge pricing allows companies selling products online to increase prices as market demand rises. It all happens automatically and almost instantaneously.</p><p>While surge pricing is now commonplace — from trying to hail an Uber after an event <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/surge-pricing-increasingly-being-used-at-restaurants-and-theaters-2023-3">to bowling alleys, restaurants, and even golf courses</a> — users of these services all hate it. Now Oasis fans do, too. </p><p>They complained over the weekend that ticket prices surged on Ticketmaster after the group decided to add three more dates.</p><p>"That feeling when you wait in a queue for four hours only to be told the price of the ticket has risen from £148 to... £355??? Because they're 'in demand,'" Helen Barnett wrote on X. "How is this not illegal?"</p><p>According to CBS, tickets for the tour are already being sold on resale websites for up to $7,800. The band issued a warning on Saturday, telling fans tickets can only be officially resold through Ticketmaster.</p><p>"Please note, Oasis Live '25 tickets can only be resold at face value via <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/TicketmasterUK">@TicketmasterUK</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/Twickets">@Twickets</a>!" the statement says. "Tickets appearing on other secondary ticketing sites are either counterfeit or will be canceled by the promoters."</p><p>Ticketmaster did not immediately return a request for comment from Business Insider. The company has made no public statement about the Oasis reunion ticket prices, but its website explains that Ticketmaster does not set ticket prices.</p><p>"Promoters and artists set ticket prices. Prices can be either fixed or market-based. Market-based tickets are labeled as "Platinum" or "In Demand," the website says.</p><p>The practice has caused no shortage of controversy in the last year. Ticket prices for Taylor Swift's billion-dollar Era's Tour also surged on the platform, reaching <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-much-taylor-swift-tickets-regret-spending-eras-ticketmaster-stubhub-2022-11">as high as $5,500 for tickets</a> that normally cost on <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/taylor-swift-concert-tickets-getting-more-expensive-taylor-swift-might-be-blame-2023-7">average about $254</a>. </p><p>Ticket prices on the platform increased so much during the Eras Tour that the Justice Department took notice, eventually <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/taylor-swift-ticketmaster-fiasco-doj-lawsuit-2024-5">filing an antitrust lawsuit</a> against Ticketmaster's parent company, Live Nation Entertainment.</p><p>A report from the <a target="_blank" href="http://www.economicliberties.us/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/052023_AELP_Ticketmaster_PolicyBrief.pdf">American Economic Liberties Project</a> found last year that 68 of the top 100 venues in the world are in the United States, and 53 of those arenas use Ticketmaster for ticket sales. This means that a whopping 78% of the highest-grossing arenas in the world use Ticketmaster.</p>

Oasis reunion tour ticket prices skyrocket due to Ticketmaster's 'in-demand' market-based surge pricing

Today is gonna be the day that they're gonna start a probe on you.</li><li>The UK's Competition and Markets Authority is investigating Ticketmaster's Oasis ticket sales.</li></ul><p>Don't look back in anger about not getting tickets to Oasis's UK reunion tour.</p><p>That's because Ticketmaster, which ran the ticket sales, is now under investigation. </p><p>The UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.gov.uk/government/news/cma-launches-investigation-into-ticketmaster-over-oasis-concert-sales">announced on Thursday</a> that it's investigating whether Ticketmaster wronged the band's fans with its "dynamic pricing" pricing model during ticket sales for Oasis's reunion tour in the UK.</p><p>Fans of Oasis — one of the most popular bands at the end of the 20th century — were thrilled when brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher announced they were getting the band back together for the first time in 15 years. </p><p>But that <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/oasis-tour-ticket-prices-fans-upset-dynamic-pricing-2024-9">excitement quickly soured</a> once fans realized how <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/oasis-tickets-ticketmaster-surge-pricing-2024-9">difficult and expensive it would be to secure tickets to the shows</a>. </p><p>Ticketmaster used its "in-demand" pricing model, which increases prices when demand rises. Fans complained of long online queues to buy tickets. When they finally had the chance to buy tickets, fans said prices had surged unexpectedly.</p><p>As one fan, Helen Barnett, wrote about her experience <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://x.com/HelenFBarnett/status/1829838603414896855">on X</a>: "That feeling when you wait in a queue for four hours only to be told the price of the ticket has risen from £148 to... £355??? Because they're 'in demand.' How is this not illegal?"</p><p>The UK anti-trust agency said in a press release that it's "scrutinizing whether the sale of Oasis tickets by Ticketmaster may have breached consumer protection law," which mandates that "ticket sales sites must be transparent in their dealings with consumers and give clear and accurate information about the price people have to pay."</p><p>Specifically, the CMA is looking into whether Ticketmaster engaged in unfair commercial practices, whether ticket buyers were notified of dynamic pricing and the amount they would actually be paying, and whether buyers were pressured to buy tickets within a short amount of time and at a higher price than they expected.</p><p>"It's important that fans are treated fairly when they buy tickets, which is why we've launched this investigation. It's clear that many people felt they had a bad experience and were surprised by the price of their tickets at check-out," Sarah Cardell, the CMA's chief executive, said in the press release, adding that fans should reach out to the agency detailing their Oasis ticket-buying experience.</p><p>The CMA noted that its investigation is still in the initial stage, and it should not be assumed that Ticketmaster broke the law.</p><p>In a statement to Business Insider, a Ticketmaster spokesperson said, "We are committed to cooperating with the CMA and look forward to sharing more facts about the ticket sale with them."</p><p>On its website, the ticket seller explained its policies.</p><p>"Promoters and artists set ticket prices. Prices can be either fixed or market-based. Market-based tickets are labeled as 'Platinum' or 'In Demand,'" the website says.</p><p>This isn't the first time Ticketmaster has been in hot water over the way it sells tickets.</p><p>Last summer, the ticket sale site <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ticketmaster-14-million-people-tried-buy-taylor-swift-presale-tickets-2022-11">crashed while millions of Taylor Swift fans</a> were trying to buy tickets for the pop star's upcoming tour. <span>That fiasco prompted the US Department of Justice to </span><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/taylor-swift-ticketmaster-fiasco-doj-lawsuit-2024-5"><span>file an antitrust lawsuit</span></a><span> against Ticketmaster's parent company, Live Nation, alleging the company is engaging in anticompetitive</span> and illegal practices.</p><p>After the DOJ announced its lawsuit in May, Ticketmaster said in a statement that the suit wouldn't "solve the issues fans care about relating to ticket prices, service fees, and access to in-demand shows," adding that the company's growth comes from helping artists, fans, and local economies.</p>

Oasis' reunion tour ticket sales were a mess. Now, authorities are zeroing in on Ticketmaster. 

<ul class="summary-list"><li>My teenage son has his first girlfriend at the age of 15.</li><li>Dating is much different now from when I was a teenager.</li></ul><p>When it comes to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fiance-dated-teens-reconnected-proposal-decade-later-2024-3">teen relationships</a> and dating, I'm only too happy to admit that I don't know much about any of it. When my peers were hooking up at parties and stealing kisses in corners at school and having sex, I was fresh out of my boy band phase and into my rock 'n' roll phase, busy planning a fantasy wedding to Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher and being far too introverted to actually find and speak to a boy my own age.</p><p>So when my son began talking about girls a few years ago, I was surprised and intrigued — and also happy that he appeared to have the social ease I lacked and would likely enter into a rite of passage I missed out on entirely (though I've never been convinced that's a bad thing). I've only had two real relationships in my life, so I've also wondered just how much advice I can really give him about dating in the first place.</p><p>Now that he has a girlfriend, it's so far turned out that he's not really looking for advice — after all, teens often think they know everything. However, he is happy to talk about his feelings and the nature of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/i-married-my-high-school-sweetheart-18-years-ago-2022-10">high school relationships</a> in the first place (six months is a really, really long time for one to last, he says). Through those conversations, I've learned that while the core of teen love and feelings is still the same as it ever was, the way relationships between teens play out in 2024 is pretty different.</p><h2 id="c8759250-14ef-443c-acac-eb4590f8688c">Communication is different</h2><p>Obviously, cellphones and then smartphones changed the game in a lot of ways. For some of us, nearly everything we do is different because of a small device we can hold in our hands. We consume media differently, have <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/mental-health/how-to-focus">different attention spans</a>, and the way we communicate has changed.</p><p>I've been surprised to see how much my son's relationships (whether platonic or otherwise) have played out over his phone — texting and memes rule the day. It strikes me as different from what I remember at that age. Sure, I could definitely spend some time on the phone, but I also always wanted to physically spend time with friends, which doesn't seem to be as big of a priority with teens now.</p><h2 id="5af9a8e5-df58-4b09-88f5-ec9ef206c1c8">Hangouts aren't what they used to be</h2><p>When I was a teen, I often wanted nothing more than to be away from my own home. I was constantly at my best friend's house, or we were driving around aimlessly, listening to music, doing anything that meant we were together.</p><p>My son and his friends often "hang out" for hours at a time, too, but they do so separately, at their own homes, often over the phone or <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/online-games-activities-to-try-with-long-distance-friends-family-2020-3">through an online game</a>. This is likely a consequence of the prolonged pandemic, and forced separation has turned into a preference.</p><p>This is true for his relationship as well. While they might see each other once a week or once every other week, neither of them seems to mind — and maybe that's a good thing after all. Who wants two bored teens who are attracted to one another hanging out alone for hours with nothing to do?</p><h2 id="0d8b5a9d-279e-401f-9bcf-a963c3d68717">Having a relationship is (apparently) novel in the first place</h2><p>I was surprised to learn that teen relationships are something of a dying trend in the United States, though I'm probably not the only one. According to <a target="_blank" href="https://srcd.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/cdev.12930">a study</a>, American teens are less likely than previous generations to take part in so-called "adult" activities, like being employed, drinking alcohol, and dating.</p><p>This data was echoed by findings from the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.americansurveycenter.org/research/generation-z-and-the-transformation-of-american-adolescence-how-gen-zs-formative-experiences-shape-its-politics-priorities-and-future/">Survey Center on American Life</a>, which reported only 56% of Gen Z adults (the generation that my son belongs to) said they had any kind of romantic relationship in their teens, a drop from 69% of millennials, 76% of Gen X, and 78% of baby boomers.</p><p>One reason I was surprised to find teens aren't dating as much is that my son and his friends have been talking about being in relationships for years — well before they were actually ready to do so — and I just assumed all teens were the same way. Since most of his friends have also begun relationships or already had their first break-up, it seems they also have a pretty laid-back approach to how long a relationship should last at this stage in their lives, which makes that fervor from long ago pretty funny to look back on.</p><p>Whatever does or doesn't happen with my son's relationship, it's fun to go on the ride with him, largely as an observer, and to witness him beginning to step into a safe version of adulthood before he's really out in the world. As his mom, it's always my priority to hear and support him no matter what and to help him navigate each path he takes — and this one is no different.</p>

From underwear to flowers and even cellphones, die-hard concert-goers have been tossing all kinds of things at their favorite stars onstage.</p><p>Last month, there was Bebe Rexha, who needed stitches after a <a href="https://www.insider.com/man-arrested-throwing-phone-at-bebe-rexha-mid-concert-2023-6" rel="">phone tossed by an audience member hit her in the head</a>. A week later, country singer Kelsea Ballerini <a href="https://www.insider.com/kelsea-ballerini-face-hit-by-object-during-concert-video-2023-6" rel="">left the stage temporarily</a> after being struck by a flying bracelet.</p><p>Drake's the latest victim to be hit by a projectile launched onstage by an over-eager fan: Someone tossed a phone at him on the opening night of his "It's All a Blur" tour on Wednesday, according to a <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@jordyntaylor28/video/7252575723494395179?is_from_webapp=1&amp;sender_device=pc&amp;web_id=7252209924947641858" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">TikTok video</a> circulating online.</p><p>But this phenomenon isn't new. "We were going to annihilate him."</p><p>The incident was typical of concert violence that often occurred during the band's tours in the '90s.</p><p>Steve Allen, a former security detail for the band who is now a crowd safety consultant, told <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/music/2022/aug/04/do-not-in-any-circumstances-incite-the-crowd-how-the-astroworld-tragedy-changed-gigs-for-ever" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">The Guardian</a> in August 2022 that he had "stopped 17 to 25 different shows around the world" when Oasis fans got too riled up during the concerts.</p><h2>Sebastian Bach, the lead singer of heavy metal band Skid Row, was hit by a glass bottle while opening for Aerosmith in 1989.</h2><div type="image" title="Heavy Metal group Skid Row as they pose at the Aragon Ballroom, Chicago, Illinois, February 12, 1992. It was a stupid thing to do. The photos show — very clearly — the lollipop lodged in the star's left eye and a staff member rushing onstage to help him get it out.</p><p>"Yeah, let's do that again all-fucking-right," Bowie said in the unconfirmed audio track from the compilation video. "Where are you, creep? Harwell can be heard saying to the crowd in a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8YJfXdSR85o&amp;ab_channel=MandahWeeks" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">video</a> of the incident that was uploaded to Youtube.</p><h2>Heavy metal band Mötley Crüe once had a chicken thrown at them during a concert from their "Theatre of Pain" tour in 1985.</h2><div type="image" title="Motley Crue in the '70s." height="1984" width="2646" msid="101566731" hostid="261" sizebytes="252152"></div><p>The Mötley Crüe members might have accidentally been the cause of this though, per a <a href="https://youtu.be/W09vyLVyA48" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">video</a> of the incident that was uploaded onto Youtube. </p><p>As the clip showed, the performance was going on as normal when a live chicken randomly appeared on stage. It made the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nike-dominates-as-teens-favorite-clothing-brand-2022-10">top place for the 12th year running</a> in Piper Sandler's semiannual "Taking Stock with Teens" report in 2022, which surveyed 14,500 teens about their brand preferences. In the most recent release of the report, 31% of teens said Nike is their favorite brand, while just 3% picked Adidas.</p><p>Adidas describes its Sportswear collection as "sport for style" – clothing for everyday wear that includes items such as football jerseys, dresses, and fresh takes on its iconic three-stripe tracksuit.</p><p>It has a strong "blokecore" aesthetic – a Gen Z trend that exploded on TikTok in 2022 — which brings back 90s soccer shirts and the style of musicians from the time period like Noel and Liam Gallagher of Oasis.</p><p>Adidas did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment on the price point of this collection. </p>

Binge watchers ahoy! Here's a watchlist for December

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5ab7d79dd849a3141f8b45a8-2000/ap081204035364.jpg" border="0" alt="Oasis" data-mce-source="AP" /><p class="source"><span>AP</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul><li><strong><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/category/led-zeppelin">Led Zeppelin</a> was the biggest rock band of the 1970s.</strong></li><li><strong>The only band to come along after with such swagger and ambition was Manchester's Oasis.</strong></li><li><strong>The group was controversial, but in retrospect, undeniably great.</strong></li></ul><hr /><p>I grew up in the 1970s, when Led Zeppelin was nearly ubiquitous on the radio. It was rare for an hour to go by without "Stairway to Heaven" or "Whole Lotta Love" getting a spin.</p><p>I put Zep behind me when I got older and discovered punk, but two winters ago, I took a deep, deep dive into all things Robert-Jimmy-John Paul-and-Bonzo and refreshed my point of view from the perspective of age.</p><p>Zep was at one time extremely outré in my world - bands like The Smiths, New Order, the Replacements, and the Violent Femmes offered a different take on rock n' roll. It probably goes without saying that I was a big Elvis Costello fan at one juncture, and he was not exactly what you'd call a Zep fan.</p><p>But time heals all youthful transgressions, and in the 2010s, Zep was ripe to revisit. There's really no way around it: In terms of scope and ambition, musical skill and adventurism, Zep was untouchable during its prime, from 1970 until about 1975, the period of the band's first four albums: I, II, II, IV.</p><p>Yes, the Rolling Stones and the Who were also doing their best work at this time, but Zep rose above. (It was truly a band, whereas The Who, for example, was turning into a vehicle for Pete Townshend's grand and influential ideas.)</p><p>Obviously, rock became quite fragmented after Zep folded in 1980, following the untimely death of drummer John Bonham. The alternatives gave way to new stuff. Punk to post-punk to New Wave to pop punk to emo, classic rock to metal, R&amp;B to rap and hip-hop. It was quite difficult to find a Really Big Band À la Zep to assume that mantle. U2 came the closest, but the group's monumental seriousness made it less a fun act than a quasi-religious experience, culminating in the deeply spiritual 1987 album "The Joshua Tree."</p><p>And then, against all odds, came Oasis. I completely missed Oasis the first time around. The Gallagher brothers of Manchester, Noel and Liam, along with the rest of the band, got too big too fast. It was Oasis-Oasis-Oasis all the time, typically presented sort of grotesquely in the context of some pitched Britpop battle with other groups, like Blur and Suede and the other ones with one-word names.</p><p>The overall vibe of the whole lad-rock thing was, to my eyes and ears, even stupider than the many, many swaggering post-Zep experiments that completely missed the dynamic nature of Zep's music.</p><p>The problem with this particular line of rock is that the lineage isn't always going to be comfortable. Zep was a departure from the Stones and The Beatles, and the relationship between the four members was much more productive, if less dazzling, than what one witnessed in more volatile bands, such as Cream.</p><p>Oasis is going through a bit of a revival at the moment, with both Liam and Noel releasing new individual albums and Liam really bringing it at the "One Love Manchester" concert to mourn the victims of the terrorist attack at an Arianna Grande concert. Noel skipped that event, and the viciously entertaining rivalry between the brothers began anew. Just like the mid-1990s. Prior to all this, I'd decided to give the entire Oasis catalog a re-listen.</p><p>This was one heck of a band. Here's why:</p>

<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">But the industry faces big risks too.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">States are starting to regulate them, and it may be only a matter of time until the Food and Drug Administration comes out against them. </span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">E-cigarettes still </span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/logic-e-cigarettes-2013-2">don't taste as good</a><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> as cigarettes and some of them </span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/njoy-kings-2012-12">don't work very well</a><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">.</span></p>
<p>Finally, there's the question of whether e-cigarettes will ever be cool. This is a big deal for an industry that has long relied on perceived coolness (<a href="http://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2010/07/the-glitz-the-glamour-the-smoke.html">with lots of help from Hollywood</a>) to attract new smokers.</p>
<p>Some e-cigs are designed to look like cigarettes, right down to the glowing red tip, though they don't burn down when smoked. Others come in sleek black with glowing blue tips. <span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Either way, it's hard to feel like James Dean while sucking a plastic glow stick.</span></p>
<p><span>E-cigarette-makers are tackling the image problem head-on, with press releases talking about <span>how </span><a href="http://www.tmcnet.com/topics/articles/2012/12/06/318822-njoy-kings-latest-offering-as-electronic-cigarettes-increase.htm">Robert Pattinson, Leonardo DiCaprio, Ashton Kutcher, Katherine Heigl and Uma Thurman</a><span> and other celebrities are turning to e-cigs. Then there are paid celebrity endorsements, like this video of</span></span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> </span><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VZishwAt_RM">actor Stephen Dorff looking handsome while smoking a Blu cigarette on the beach</a>.</p>
<p>Still, many aren't convinced.</p>
<p>Last month, Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher <a href="http://www.nme.com/news/muse/69132">mocked the drummer from Muse</a> after he caught him smoking an electronic cigarette. Said Gallagher: <span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">"I had to say to him: 'Really? Really? Is that where you are at? Do me a favor, mate, either have a proper one outside, or don't have one.' It lit up green when he had a drag of it. Nonsense."</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"></span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">E-cigs are inspiring</span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> "<a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2013/jan/05/e-cigarettes-tobacco-harmless-enjoyable">contempt</a>" from many traditional smokers, according to The Guardian's Lionel Shriver.</span></p>
<div><span style="color: #222222; font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Gawker's Hamilton Nolan likewise </span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">said that</span><a href="http://gawker.com/5966265/electronic-cigarettes-will-never-be-cool"> electronic cigarettes will never be cool</a><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">. He attributes this to a lack of danger: "Cigarettes were never cool just because of their phallic connotations, and the fact that they gave you something to do with your hands. They were cool because they are <em>dangerous</em>."</span></div>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">What do other people think? Among the many commenters on Nolan's article, the consensus seems to be that e-cigarettes are not cool but that that's not why people smoke them.</span></p>
<p><span>RealAmurrican writes: "They sure do take all the coolness and romance out of smoking, but I was gifted one about a week ago, and let me say that they are PHENOMENAL for helping you quit."</span></p>
<p>MrSnaps writes: "<span>I have been using an electronic cig for over a year, mostly because I feel better in the mornings than when I did smoking traditional cigarettes. That said, no, E-cigs are not cool."</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Onceler writes: "<span>heh, well, people may start smoking because it 'looks cool' and 'represents danger' or whatever, but they keep smoking because they are addicted to the chemical cocktail that's unleashed when you inhale the smoke. and it's very difficult to quit once you're addicted. only in America would an invention like this come along that could save millions of lives (literally) and the cultural elite or what have you decide to mock it because it's not 'cool enough' or 'dangerous enough' for them."</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"><span>There will be a demand for e-cigarettes regardless of the cool factor. </span></span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Purported lameness will, however, prevent some smokers from switching and limit the number of new smokers.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">That's why more and more of the<a href="http://www.cdc.gov/tobacco/data_statistics/fact_sheets/economics/econ_facts/"> $10 billion </a></span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"><a href="http://www.cdc.gov/tobacco/data_statistics/fact_sheets/economics/econ_facts/">spent on tobacco advertising</a> in 2008 will be redirected to e-cigarettes. Luckily for the industry, it can advertise for e-cigarettes in many places where tobacco ads are banned. </span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">And don't underestimate what the ad industry can accomplish.</span></p>
<p>One of the greatest feats in PR history was when Edward Bernays made smoking cool for women by getting debutantes at a 1929 parade to light up in unison, an event branded as <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torches_of_Freedom">Torches Of Freedom</a>. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/vintage-cigarette-ads-spokespeople-2012-5">Cigarette ads from back in the day</a> were legendarily effective too — and you may remember that the first episode of "Mad Men" is all about branding for Lucky Strike.</p>
<p> <span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">NJOY currently controls </span><a href="http://www.trefis.com/stock/mo/articles/157439/should-altria-enter-the-e-cigarette-market-to-support-growth/2012-12-10">40 percent of the U.S. electronic cigarette market</a><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">. </span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Big tobacco companies are getting into the business too, with </span><a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052702304723304577365723851497152.html">Lorillard buying blu ecigs</a><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> </span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">earlier this year, and </span><a href="http://www.journalnow.com/business/article_cf223198-c21f-5b4e-8e7b-c5fb6190dcad.html">Reynolds developing its own technology</a><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">. An analyst from investment bank Jefferies said he had</span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/philip-morris-is-releasing-a-ton-of-cool-new-cigarettes-2012-6"> "high hopes for Next Generation Products" from Philip Morris</a><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> too.</span></p>
