These bumps form like pimples, and can usually be treated at home. </p><p>Here's what you should know about styes and five <keyword id="54649" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="home-remedies">home remedies</keyword> you can use to treat the infection. </p><h2>What is a stye?</h2><p><a href="https://www.aao.org/eye-health/diseases/what-are-chalazia-styes" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Styes</a> are small, red lumps on or around your eyelid that can be painful. They occur when an oil gland or hair follicle around the eyelid becomes infected or clogged.</p><p>There are many oil glands around your eye that produce an oil that helps tears stick to the eye and keeps them lubricated, says <a href="https://www.houstoneye.com/our-team/fiaz-zaman/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Fiaz Zaman</a>, MD, FACS, an ophthalmologist at Houston Eye Associates in Houston, Texas. </p> <p>These glands can become <a href="https://kidshealth.org/en/parents/stye.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">blocked</a> by excess oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria which results in a pimple-like formation on your eyelid. It's <a href="https://dukeeyecenter.duke.edu/news-events/what-causes-stye-and-best-ways-get-rid-one-featuring-singh" target="_blank" rel="noopener">similar</a> to how a pimple forms when the pores on your face become clogged up. </p><p><a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/sty/symptoms-causes/syc-20378017" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Symptoms</a> of a stye include: </p><ul><li>A lump on the eyelid</li><li>Crusting around the eyelid </li><li>Swelling </li><li>Redness </li><li>Pain</li><li>Tearing</li></ul><p>Styes can last anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, says Zaman. Here are some home remedies that can help alleviate symptoms of a stye and speed up the healing process.</p><h2>1. Clean your eyelids</h2><p>Maintaining good eye hygiene can help prevent and treat styes, says <a href="https://opto.ca/cao-leadership" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Micheal Nelson</a>, OD, FAOO, an optometrist, and the president of the Canadian Association of Optometrists. </p><p>Here are some <a href="https://health.clevelandclinic.org/styes-can-avoid-best-treatment-tips/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">tips</a> to help you keep your eyelids clean: </p><ul><li>Don't use expired makeup</li><li>Take your makeup off at night</li><li>Wash your hands regularly, especially if you wear contact lenses</li><li>Don't rub your eyes if you have allergies</li></ul><p>If you do have a stye, you can clean the area with <a href="https://discoveryeye.org/is-that-a-stye-or-a-chalazion-on-my-eye/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">diluted tear-free baby shampoo</a>, which is gentle on your eyes. This will help reduce bacteria around the stye and keep the possibility of an infection from spreading. </p><p>Maintaining proper eye hygiene by washing your eyelids and lashes with gentle soap meant to be used around the eyes every few days can also help <a href="https://m.kidshealth.org/Nemours/en/teens/stye.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">prevent styes</a>. </p><h2>2. Use a warm compress</h2><p>Placing a warm, moist washcloth onto the closed eye can help treat a stye.</p><p>"The heat helps open the clogged pore and let the oily material that's stuck in there come out," Zaman says. He recommends applying the warm compress for 10 to15 minutes two to three times a day for best results.</p><p>Make sure you <a href="https://www.health.harvard.edu/a_to_z/styes-and-chalazions-a-to-z" target="_blank" rel="noopener">change out or clean</a> the washcloth you use for the compress after each application to avoid spreading the infection to other parts of your eye. </p><h2>3. Stop wearing eye makeup</h2><p>Wearing eye makeup with a stye could irritate your eyes further and cause an infection to spread.</p><p>Zaman suggests specifically avoiding makeup that is applied directly to the eyelid, such as mascara or eyeliner. He says eyeshadow is usually safe to wear as long as it is applied outside of the lid margin.</p><p>After your stye heals, it's best to throw out the eyeliner or mascara you used before you got a stye. Nelson says this is for two reasons: </p><ol><li>Your makeup could have been the source of the bacterial infection.</li><li>You may have transferred bacteria from your infection to your makeup and could spread the bacteria to the other eye.</li></ol><h2>4. Consider not wearing contact lenses</h2><p>Styes can interfere with the natural lubrication process of the eyes and may cause discomfort if you normally wear contact lenses. </p><p>"The oil that is produced in the eyelid is part of your tear film and if you don't have enough oil going into your natural tear, your eye may dry out faster," says Zaman. </p><p>If you are experiencing dry eyes from a stye, you might want to avoid wearing contact lenses until your stye heals. However, Zaman says you can continue to wear contacts as long as your eye feels comfortable.</p><h2>5. Do not pop</h2><p>If you pop a stye, there's a chance you will push any infected material further into your eye socket, making the infection worse. "If the infection spreads, it can lead to further irritation or even compromise your vision," says Nelson.</p><p>Styes should only be drained in a controlled setting, by an ophthalmologist, or on their own. Styes that drain naturally won't push the infection into the eye. "That's the body's taking it out through a natural pathway, which is okay," says Zaman.</p><h2>When to see a doctor</h2><p>If a stye is causing you pain, it's a good idea to get it checked out by a doctor so you don't experience unnecessary discomfort, says Zaman. He also says to immediately seek medical attention if your vision becomes blurred or impaired.</p><p>If the stye isn't causing you discomfort, they can last up to months without causing you issues. Here are five causes of itchy eyes and how to treat them. </p><h2>1. Dry eyes</h2><p>If your eyes are itchy and uncomfortable, you may have dry eyes. Dry eye is a very common condition, affecting around <a href="https://www.nei.nih.gov/learn-about-eye-health/eye-conditions-and-diseases/dry-eye" target="_blank" rel="noopener">16 million Americans</a>. </p><p>It happens when your eyes either don't produce enough tears or because the tears evaporate too quickly, which can result in itchy uncomfortable eyes, says <a href="https://www.yalemedicine.org/specialists/vicente_diaz" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Vicente Diaz, MD</a>, an ophthalmologist at <a href="https://www.yalemedicine.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Yale Medicine</a> and assistant professor at <a href="https://medicine.yale.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Yale School of Medicine</a>. </p><p>There are various potential <a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/dry-eyes/symptoms-causes/syc-20371863" target="_blank" rel="noopener">causes for dry eyes</a>, says <a href="http://www.brissettemd.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ashley Brissette, MD, MSc</a>, an ophthalmologist at <a href="https://weillcornell.org/ashley-brissette-md-msc-frcsc" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Weill Cornell Medicine</a>. She says a few common culprits are:</p><ul><li>Too much screen time </li><li>Aging</li><li>Dry air/low humidity</li><li>Wearing contacts </li><li>Hormonal changes (in women)</li></ul><h3>How to treat it:</h3><p>The first line of action is to try out some over-the-counter eye drops, says Diaz, such as artificial tears or lubricating eye drops. However, if these don't help, he says you may need to see your doctor for prescription-strength eye drops to decrease inflammation and improve your own tear production. </p><p>Additionally, on top of addressing the symptom of itchiness, you should also address the root cause, if possible, Brissette says. For example, reducing screen time, using a humidifier, or changing the type of contacts you wear.</p><h2>2. Allergies</h2><p>Allergies are extremely common affecting roughly <a href="https://www.aafa.org/allergy-facts/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">50 million Americans</a>. Amongst other symptoms like sneezing or a runny nose, allergies can cause itchy, irritated eyes. </p><p>This happens because your immune system thinks the allergen is a dangerous threat, so it releases a chemical called histamine. Brissette says some very common allergens are:</p><ul><li>Pollen </li><li>Dust</li><li>Pet dander</li></ul><h3>How to treat it:</h3><p>You can take a few steps to treat allergic itchy eyes:</p><ol><li>Diaz recommends initially trying artificial tears, since they can help to physically flush the allergens from the eye.</li><li>If you're still uncomfortable, he says you can use an antihistamine eye drop, which are eye drops specifically for allergies. These may be over-the-counter or prescription.</li><li>If you're experiencing any swelling in addition to itching, you can try relieving it by placing a cold compress on the affected eye.</li></ol><p><strong>Note:</strong> Avoid rubbing your eyes which can lead to more irritation as well as the potential of introducing even more allergens into your eyes. </p><p>You can also take preventative action to stop the itchy eyes before they start. Brissette recommends getting an allergy test from your doctor to determine what you are allergic to so that you know what to avoid. </p><h2>3. Contact lens use</h2><p>While contacts are safe to use, they can cause discomfort. "A contact lens is a foreign body. So, like any foreign object, the body can start to reject it if it is in place for too long," says Diaz.</p><p>This is due to the fact that the cornea, the outermost layer of the eye, needs oxygen. "Our eyes get their oxygen from the environment, and when you're wearing a contact lens for extended periods of time, it can lead to irritation and <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK234044/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">oxygen deprivation on the surface of the eye,</a>" says Brissette. </p><p>She says this oxygen deprivation leads to inflammation, dryness, and itchiness.</p><h3>How to treat it:</h3><p>You don't need to stop contact use altogether to experience relief. Brisette recommends the following tips for less irritating contact use:</p><ul><li>Use contact lens rewetting drops (available over-the-counter)</li><li>Visit your eye doctor to ensure that your lenses fit properly and are not too tight on the eyes</li><li>Take breaks from wearing contacts by switching to glasses when you can</li><li>Use daily disposable contacts rather than reusable ones, since they typically have higher oxygen permeability, meaning oxygen can better pass through them, lessening your chance of dry eye, and therefore, itchiness.</li></ul><h2>4. Infections</h2><p>There are various ways that the eyes can become infected. "There can be overgrowth of normal bacteria, which then causes inflammation. Or, there could be contamination with other bacteria or viruses," says Diaz. </p><p>If you have an infection, you'll likely experience other symptoms alongside itching, says Brissette. Conjunctivitis, AKA pink eye, is the <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6003010/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">most common type</a> of eye infection and causes <a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/pink-eye/symptoms-causes/syc-20376355" target="_blank" rel="noopener">symptoms</a> like itching, discharge, a gritty sensation, and redness. </p><p>Bacterial infections can also cause itchy eyes. Some examples are:</p><ul><li>Keratitis</li><li>Cellulitis</li><li>Endophthalmitis</li></ul><h3>How to treat it:</h3><p>It's important to practice good hygiene - like not touching your eyes and frequently washing your hands - to prevent spreading the infection to others, Diaz says. </p><p>You may also need to be prescribed anti-inflammatory medications or antibiotics, depending on the type of eye infection you have. Be sure to see a doctor to get a proper diagnosis and treatment if you think you have an infection. </p><p>Additionally, Brissette recommends washing your pillowcases, towels, and anything else that's come into contact with your eyes, and throwing out eye makeup or makeup brushes that you've recently used, as it may be contaminated.  </p><h2>5. Blepharitis</h2><p><a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/blepharitis/symptoms-causes/syc-20370141" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Blepharitis</a> refers to inflammation of the eyelids, particularly around the edges, and it affects roughly <a href="https://simovision.com/assets/Uploads/Brochure-Blephex-Blephex-Patient-EN.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">82 million</a> people in the US. </p><p>Diaz says healthy eyelids are essential to eye comfort, so if your eyelids are inflamed, you'll likely experience discomfort.</p><p>It can be caused by clogged glands in your eyelids, skin conditions like rosacea or seborrheic dermatitis, infection, allergies, or dry eyes. </p><p>The condition causes symptoms like itchiness, burning, swollen and red eyelids, and flaky or crusty skin around the eyes.</p><h3>How to treat it:</h3><p>Blepharitis is treatable with mostly at-home self-care. Diaz recommends using a warm compress on your eyes to help those glands stay healthy and keep them flowing. </p><p>Additionally, Brissette says it's crucial to keep your eyes clean to remove debris, crusts, and excess bacteria. You can purchase specialized eye washes, or even use a bit of <a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/blepharitis/diagnosis-treatment/drc-20370148" target="_blank" rel="noopener">diluted baby shampoo</a> to gently clean the area, says Brissette.</p><p>In more severe cases of blepharitis, you may need to be prescribed anti-inflammatory steroid eye drops, or antibiotics if it's caused by a bacterial infection.</p><h2>Insider's takeaway</h2><p>Although what's causing your itchy eyes is likely not dangerous, the sensation is a hindrance. This bump often <a href="https://www.urmc.rochester.edu/encyclopedia/content.aspx?ContentTypeID=85&amp;ContentID=P010751075">feels</a> swollen and painful to the touch. Styes are basically like acne that occurs on the eyelid, says <a href="https://healthcare.utah.edu/fad/mddetail.php?physicianID=u1008804&amp;name=amy-lin-lin">Amy Lin</a>, MD, an <a href="https://www.aao.org/eye-health/tips-prevention/what-is-ophthalmologist">ophthalmologist</a> at the University of Utah <keyword id="6354750" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="health">Health</keyword>.</p><p>Though styes can happen to anyone, there are certain behaviors that increase your risk. Here's what you need to know about the main causes of styes, how to prevent them, and what to do if you have one. </p><h2>What causes a stye</h2><p>Styes are caused by infected oil glands in your eyelids. These <a href="https://www.allaboutvision.com/conditions/meibomian-gland.htm">oil glands</a> prevent tears from evaporating too quickly and drying out your eyes, but these glands can also become infected with bacteria. </p><p>There's one particular bacterium that leads to stye infections: <a href="https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/conditions-and-diseases/hordeolum-stye"><em>Staphylococcus aureus</em></a>. According to <a href="https://www.dukehealth.org/find-doctors-physicians/tina-k-singh-md">Tina Singh</a>, MD, an ophthalmologist at Duke Eye Center, it's one of the most common bacteria on the skin, eyelids, and eyelashes, and can clog the oil glands. </p><p>While the bacterium is found in <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5983722/">20 to 30%</a> of human nasal cavities without harm, you can also pick it up by <a href="https://www.merckmanuals.com/home/infections/bacterial-infections-gram-positive-bacteria/staphylococcus-aureus-infections">touching</a> surfaces infected with it, and <em>S. aureus </em>can become a pathogen itself when it gets under the skin, causing skin infections. </p><p>There a few reasons why people tend to get styes: </p><ul><li><strong>Poor hygiene.</strong> Rubbing your eyes when you haven't washed your hands can lead to styes. "We carry a lot of bacteria on our hands, and that's easily transmissible to our eyelids and eyelashes," Singh says. Improper contact lens hygiene can also lead to styes, as it puts bacteria closer to the eyelids, so it's important to disinfect contact daily. "We don't recommend sleeping with contacts as well because bacteria love moist, dark environments," she says. </li><li><strong>Chlorine or sweat</strong>. "People should rinse their eyelids after getting out of a pool," Singh says, in addition to hot tubs, as there are <a href="https://www.eyedolatryblog.com/2015/07/treating-red-eye-and-irritation.html">chlorine-resistant bacteria</a> that can cause eye infections. If you sweat from exercise or other activities, she says you should wash your eyelids after, as <a href="http://www.drguggino.com/best-ways-handle-common-eye-injuries/">sweat</a> and oil can clog the eyelid's oil glands and lead to infection.</li><li><strong>Makeup.</strong> "Lash extensions really attract a lot of dirt and bacteria, which can clog the [oil] glands," says Singh. "And makeup is the same way. Makeup really attracts a lot of dirt and bacteria," which can lead to oil gland infections on the eyelid and cause styes. The Cleveland Clinic recommends replacing eye makeup every <a href="https://health.clevelandclinic.org/styes-can-avoid-best-treatment-tips/">six months</a> to avoid an overgrowth of stye-causing bacteria. </li><li><strong>Skin conditions. </strong>"Some people with acne have a condition called <a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/rosacea/symptoms-causes/syc-20353815?utm_source=Google&amp;utm_medium=abstract&amp;utm_content=Rosacea&amp;utm_campaign=Knowledge-panelwledge-panel">rosacea</a>, which can actually affect the eyes and can make them prone to have more styes," Lin says. Rosacea affects about <a href="https://www.webmd.com/eye-health/what-is-ocular-rosacea#1">13 million</a> Americans, and it involves broken blood vessels under the skin which can produce small, pus-filled bumps. The condition can occur on the eyes as well, called ocular rosacea, which <a href="https://www.webmd.com/eye-health/what-is-ocular-rosacea#1">can lead to</a> blocked oil glands around the eyes. <a href="https://chicago.medicine.uic.edu/departments/academic-departments/ophthalmology-visual-sciences/our-department/media-center/eye-facts/blepharitis-stye-chalazion/">Seborrheic dermatitis</a> can also <a href="https://www.aao.org/eye-health/diseases/chalazion-stye-risk">increase</a> your risk of styes, which is a chronic inflammatory <keyword id="1269453" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="skin-condition">skin condition</keyword> that can lead to eyelid swelling and oily secretions.</li><li><strong>Medical conditions.</strong> Both Lin and Singh say that blepharitis can increase the risk of developing styes. <a href="https://www.nei.nih.gov/learn-about-eye-health/eye-conditions-and-diseases/blepharitis">Blepharitis</a> causes eyelid inflammation and can often lead to excessive tearing, light sensitivity, redness of the eye, and a feeling like there's something in your eye. The condition also makes your eyelids <a href="https://www.health.harvard.edu/newsletter_article/what-can-i-do-about-blepharitis">prone to infection</a>, which can lead to styes. High blood sugar <a href="https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2015/08/150806151354.htm">can also cause</a> a production of molecules that suppress immune defenses, so those with uncontrolled diabetes are more prone to infections, and may have a <a href="https://www.cedars-sinai.org/health-library/diseases-and-conditions/s/stye.html">higher risk</a> for styes. </li></ul><h2>How to get rid of a stye</h2><p>"Some people have a tendency to get styes," Lin says, which could be due in part to the aforementioned poor hygiene, makeup, or medical conditions. "So if you've had styes in the past, you are more prone to get styes in the future. It doesn't really confer any resistance."</p><p>If styes keep recurring, you might consider <a href="https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/17658-sty-stye/management-and-treatment">treating it with</a> antibiotic ointment, eye drops, pills, or even a steroid injection, according to the Cleveland Clinic.  </p><p>To prevent getting styes in the first place, it's imperative to practice proper lid hygiene. Washing your whole face isn't enough, Singh says, and so you instead have to target your eyelids to get rid of styes. </p><p>Singh recommends washing your eyelids with baby shampoo (it's designed to <a href="https://kidshealth.org/en/parents/stye.html">be less harmful on your eyes</a>) and warm water to clean along lash margin where styes tend to form. </p><p>If you've still developed a stye, though, there are ophthalmologist-recommended ways to safely get rid of them. </p><p>"Really, the best way is lots of warm compresses over the eyelids," says Lin. "Adding heat can get the oil glands to unclog and get them to release their oils naturally." </p><p>To do a <a href="https://www.aao.org/eye-health/diseases/chalazion-stye-treatment">warm compress</a>, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, you should:</p><ul><li>Take a clean washcloth and soak it in hot water. <a href="https://nyulangone.org/conditions/stye-in-adults/treatments/home-treatment-for-stye">Wring it out</a> so that it's not dripping.  </li><li>Hold it to your eyelid for 10 to 15 minutes. If the cloth gets cold, warm it up again by dipping it in warm water. </li><li>Do this three to five times a day. </li></ul><p>"It's not recommended to try and squeeze [a stye]," Lin says. "Because that could actually cause us to get more inflamed and actually get worse." Instead, she says to let a stye run its course of about two to three weeks, using warm compresses to expedite the healing process. </p><p>While styes will typically clear up on their own, Singh notes that you should see a doctor if your stye causes vision problems.
