Five types of samples of the 40-year-old man currently in isolation at <keyword id="177659" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="fever-hospital" source="Orion">Fever Hospital</keyword> in <keyword id="6354552" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="hyderabad" source="Orion">Hyderabad</keyword> were collected and sent to the lab. The samples include swab from throat, blood, urine, from lesions on skin. According to Fever Hospital superintendent <keyword id="14548303" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dr-k-shankar" source="Orion">Dr K. Shankar</keyword>, the results are likely to be available by Tuesday evening He termed the condition of the man as stable. According to him, the patient is restless and has a running fever. "The lesions on his neck, hands and chest are like lesions from Monkeypox. It may also be chickenpox," Dr Shankar said. The samples were collected after the man was shifted from his home town Kamareddy to Hyderabad on Sunday evening. According to officials he arrived in Kamareddy from Kuwait on July 6. He developed fever on July 20 and later when there were rashes on the body, he approached a private hospital in the town. Suspecting it to be a case of Monkeypox, doctors referred him to Kamareddy District Hospital and from there he was sent in an ambulance to Hyderabad on Sunday. Director of Public Health Dr G. Srinivasa Rao said the man's six close contacts were also identified. Though they have no symptoms, the authorities kept them in isolation as a precautionary measure. The health department is also trying to trace those who came into contact with them during the last few days. The director of public health said that people need not panic over Monkeypox as it is not a fatal disease. He said health minister Harish Rao was monitoring the situation and giving them directions. "We are taking all necessary measures," he said. This is the first suspected case of Monkeypox in Telangana. Neighbouring Andhra Pradesh had reported the first suspected case on July 17. A two-year-old child, who had gone to Dubai with family, was found with skin rashes on return. However, the samples sent to NIV, Pune tested negative for Monkeypox. Telangana's health department is also requesting Gandhi Hospital in Hyderabad to test the samples from the suspected Monkeypox case. The RT-PCR test would be conducted at the government hospital and if the result is positive, the samples will be sent to NIV, Pune for confirmation. However, the samples from the first suspected case were directly sent to NIV. Fever Hospital in Hyderabad recently set up two isolation wards for Monkeypox cases. One isolation ward each was opened for male and female patients. Superintendent of the hospital said they have arranged for 36 beds and the requisite staff, equipment and medicines. Fever Hospital, as the Sir Ronald Ross Institute for Tropical and Communicable Diseases is popularly known, has been declared a nodal centre for treatment of suspected Monkeypox cases. On Sunday, the first suspected case was admitted. The Fever Hospital had also handled the first few suspected cases of Covid-19 in March, 2020. Samples from Telangana's 1st suspected Monkeypox case sent to NIV

As per the source, the Nigerian man has no recent history of foreign travel. First Zika virus case detected in Kerala, says state's health minister

A health scare has gripped Gujarat after six children tragically succumbed to a suspected viral infection since July 10. While the cause is yet to be confirmed, State Health Minister <keyword id="20006003" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rushikesh-Patel" source="keywords">Rushikesh Patel</keyword> has stated that <keyword id="22416433" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Chandipura-virus" source="keywords">Chandipura virus</keyword> is a strong possibility. Twelve cases have been identified across the state, with four reported in Sabarkantha district, three in Aravalli, and one each in Mahisagar and Kheda districts. Notably, two patients from Rajasthan and one from Madhya Pradesh also received treatment in Gujarat. Samples from all 12 patients have been sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune for definitive diagnosis, said Minister Patel. Five of the six deaths occurred at the civil hospital in Himatnagar, Sabarkantha district. Interestingly, the virus is not considered contagious from person to person and has never been detected in any humans outside India. This mysterious virus was first detected in the blood of two patients from Maharashtra’s Chandipura village back in 1965. Since then, the virus has been linked to various unexplained outbreaks of encephalitis in the country. Recent ones include one in Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra in 2003, where 329 children were affected and 183 of them died. Similar cases were observed in children in Gujarat in the following year, in 2004. Given previous trends, the Chandipura virus seems to have a high mortality rate of over 50%. Accordingly, authorities are taking swift action to contain the situation. Intensive surveillance has been undertaken in the affected areas, Minister Patel stated. Over 18,600 people across 4,400 households have been screened for the virus and the Health Department is working tirelessly to prevent further spread of the disease. Dr Vikram Paradkar, Executive Vice President (Manufacturing), Biological E, said the firm produced about 30 crore doses of Corbevax in total, abiding by the vaccine manufacturing commitment to the Central government. In March '22, Biological E successfully supplied 10 crore doses to the government. "Currently, we have approximately 20 crore (200 million) doses that are fully tested and ready for supply, as and when we receive orders. Additionally, we manufactured 20 crore doses equivalent of the antigen which will help us ramp up the manufacturing of the Corbevax finished product quickly," Paradkar told PTI. The vaccine has been developed by Biological E in collaboration with Texas Children's Hospital Center for Vaccine Development (Texas Children's CVD) and Baylor College of Medicine (Baylor) in Houston, Texas, USA. He further said Biological E can begin with the additional vaccine supplies within eight weeks of future orders and can manufacture and supply approximately 10 crore doses of Corbevax on a monthly basis as per its qualified manufacturing capacity. Bharat Biotech sources said the vaccine maker has more than 50 million doses of Covaxin readily available in vials, and over 200 million doses as drug substance. "Additional production capacity is also available to meet product demand," they said adding fresh stocks of the vaccine are available and ready for supplies. However, according to a recent study by researchers of WSU’s Paul Allen School for Global Health, the Khosta-2 virus can infect human cells. Both SARS-CoV-2 and Khosta-2 belong to the same sub-category of coronaviruses known as sarbecoviruses. “In this study, we tested how well the spike proteins from these bat viruses infect human cells under different conditions. We found that the spike from virus Khosta-2 could infect cells similar to human pathogens using the same entry mechanisms, but was resistant to neutralisation by serum from individuals who had been vaccinated for SARS-CoV-2,” the researchers <a href="https://journals.plos.org/plospathogens/article?id=10.1371/journal.ppat.1010828#abstract1">said</a> in a journal PLoS Pathogens. It also highlighted that the new virus can dodge the current vaccine immunity of people. “We do not want to scare anybody and say this is a completely vaccine-resistant virus," Michael Letko, the lead scientist in the study, <a href="https://time.com/6215810/coronavirus-bats-russia-vaccine-resistant/">told</a> Time magazine. A related virus named Khosta-1 was found in Russian bats in 2020 only, however, it couldn’t enter human cells like Khosta-2. The new virus attaches to the same protein, ACE2, which SARS-CoV-2 uses to penetrate human cells. But the good news is that the Khosta-2 virus will not cause a serious disease in people like the Omicron variant of Covid-19, the study suggests. “But it is concerning that there are viruses circulating in nature that have these properties—they can bind to human receptors and are not so neutralised by current vaccine responses,” said Letko, who is assistant professor in the Paul G. However, the probability of the Zoonotic spillover of the sarbecoviruses from animals to humans could not be denied like, it happened earlier with SARS-CoV-1 and 2 viruses.” The Indian government is now ready to handle any kind of public health emergency situation related to the emergence or reemergence of any viral pathogen in India, Dr. Yadav clarified. “We have already exhibited this strength in the past as during the times of Zika, Nipah, and Monkeypox viruses, and the Covid-19 pandemic,” she added. New Covid-like virus found in Russian bats — Here’s all you need to know

Hyderabad, June 29 () The country's 'first' indigenous COVID-19 vaccine COVAXIN, developed by city-based Bharat Biotech in collaboration with ICMR and NIV, has got the nod for human clinical trials from the Drug Controller General of India, the company said on Monday. The Phase I and Phase II clinical trials of the vaccine for SARS-CoV-2, approved after pre-clinical studies demonstrated safety and immune response, would start across the country next month. The collaboration with Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the National Institute of Virology (NIV) was instrumental in the development of the vaccine, the company said in a release. The indigenous and inactivated vaccine has been developed at Bharat Biotechs BSL-3 (Bio-Safety Level 3) high containment facility located in the Genome Valley here, a release said. The Drug Controller General of India CDSCO (The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation), Ministry of Health &amp; Family Welfare granted permission to initiate Phase I &amp; II Human clinical trials after the company submitted results generated from pre-clinical studies, demonstrating safety and immune response. Human clinical trials are scheduled to start across India in July 2020, the release said. Chairman and Managing Director of the company Dr. Krishna Ella said: We are proud to announce COVAXIN, Indias first indigenous vaccine against COVID-19. The collaboration with ICMR and NIV was instrumental in the development of this vaccine. "The proactive support and guidance from CDSCO has enabled approvals to this project. Our R&amp;D and Manufacturing teams worked tirelessly to deploy our proprietary technologies towards this platform," he said. Expedited through the national regulatory protocols, the company accelerated its objective in completing the comprehensive pre-clinical studies. Results from these studies have been promising and show extensive safety and effective immune responses, the released added.
