India all out for 150 in first Test against Australia

From the next financial year, alcohol will be banned in Bihar, as announced by the state’s Chief Minister <keyword id="6358190" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nitish-Kumar">Nitish Kumar</keyword>. He has done so after he had promised a group of angry women about the same, at an event in July. Reportedly, the women were angry over the alarming addiction to country liquor in Bihar villages. 
 
"In 1977-78 we tried to impose prohibition but it was not effective. But I feel women are suffering more than others (because of alcohol abuse)... I have instructed my officials to start working towards this and implement this from the next financial year," Mr Kumar said at a function. 
 
After his swearing in as Bihar’s Chief Minister last week, this is his first major announcement. However, one can’t be sure if alcohol would be completely banned or the ban would be restricted to just country liquor. 
 
Talking of the income through alcohol, last year Bihar government earned nearly Rs. 3,500 crore through taxes on the sale of alcohol. How and when this loss of revenue would be covered up is yet to be known. 
 
Other Indian states where alcohol is banned are Gujarat, Nagaland, Manipur and Lakshwadeep. Last year, Kerela too had announced its aim to be alcohol-free within 10 years.

Banned: Alcohol in Bihar to be banned April 2016 onwards, CM Nitish Kumar announces

More than 24 people were killed and 25 injured after two trains, Kamayani Express and Janata Express, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=derail">derailed</a> while crossing a bridge over swollen Machal river in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=madhya+pradesh">Madhya Pradesh</a>. 
 
The incident happened at 11.30 pm on Tuesday when seven coaches of Kamayani Express, bound for Varanasi, and five bogies of Janata Express, bound for Mumbai, were crossing the bridge in Harda, some 160 km from Bhopal. 
 
The toll is expected to go further up. The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=indian+railways">Railways</a> has announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the families of the deceased, Rs 50,000 to grievously injured and Rs 25,000 to those with minor injuries. 
 
Meanwhile, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=shivraj+singh+chouhan">Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan</a> will visit the site later in the day. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Nitish+Kumar">Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar</a> also condoled the deaths. 
 
"Seven bogies of Kamayani Express and engine plus three coaches of Janata Express were derailed between Khirkiya and Bhirangi stations near Harda. The mishap took place around 11.30 PM on Tuesday as base material of the tracks got washed away in heavy rains. Nearly 25 passengers suffered injuries," West Central Railway PRO Piyush Mathur told news agency PTI. 
 
Search operations have been launched and few coaches also fell in the river. Bhopal Railway PRO told PTI that more than 250 passengers were rescued so far. 
 
Meanwhile, Minister of State of Railways Ministry Manoj Sinha said it was not a manmade disaster but a natural calamity.

Flash floods derail two trains in MP, over 24 dead, 25 injured

Yes, it’s that time of February we all used to look forward to until tragedy struck last year. 
 
The time when we’ve managed to get over the afterglow (read: rejection and humiliation) of the most overrated event- Valentine’s Day and started looking forward to the country’s annual comedy event with hopes of laughing our heart out? 
 
No, I’m not talking about the AIB Roast. (Did you not notice that I clearly mentioned the word ‘çomedy’?) 
 
What I’m talking of instead is the Railway Budget. 
 
Wait a second. I know what you’re thinking. 
 
The Railway Budget is to the actual Budget what Uday Chopra is to Aditya Chopra- no one spares a moment to remember the former while the latter gets all the attention. 
 
But, here’s the thing- the drab, boring nature of the Railway Budget was easily forgotten due to the efforts of the Railway Ministers who burnt many a midnight oil to ensure they put up a comic display worthy of the people in the largest democracy- the people whose taxes would fund the whims and fancies of these ministers. 
 
But, this was until last year. 
 
This was until our honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi decided to appoint Suresh Prabhu as the Minister of Indian Railways. To acquaint you a little more how grave this crime is, let me infuriate you with this piece of information- Prabhu is regarded as one of the best performing ministers in Modi’s cabinet. 
 
Yes, you read that right- ‘Best performing minister.’ 
 
Can someone please inform him that it is not even in his job description to perform? And, most importantly, has he learnt nothing from the greats- his predecessors? 
 
It all started when Suresh Prabhu, the Minister of Railways didn’t name a train after his alleged girlfriend, who also happened to be the sister of one of the ministers in his cabinet, like Nitish Kumar once (allegedly) did. 
 
I wonder if Prabhu has had the fortune of travelling by the Archana Express. 
 
Maybe he would have if he wasn’t so busy taking the Railway Budget like it was an issue that affected the lives of millions of Indian citizens and instead taken tips from previous ministers like Mamata Banerjee and Lalu Prasad Yadav and just come do an improv comedy act. 
 
Like Mamata Banerjee, he could’ve just thrown tantrums and threaten ministers who weren’t listening to him by telling them that ‘he would cut out the sops for their states if they didn’t listen to his speech.’ 
 
Infact, he could’ve done even better and just blame the House for goofing up the pronunciations like Banerjee famously did and claim that it was their shouting that affected her pronunciation. 
 
And, frankly, the cherry on the cake would’ve been had Prabhu treated the announcement of the Railway Budget as an opportunity to show off how good his English speaking skills are like the great Lalu Prasad Yadav did. The Budget could present himself as long as he could praise himself and his self-defined achievements. 
 
But, instead, Prabhu has forced us to pay attention to the Railway Budget, take it seriously and not wait for him to goof up or start a yelling match. He went as far as creating a Twitter account and instead of just using it to send Birthday wishes to fellow ministers or tweeting about his travels like Modi, he uses it to help and respond to queries. Can you believe that? 
 
If Mamata Banerjee or Lalu Prasad Yadav would have been presenting the Budget tomorrow, they would have been thinking of how best to cause the most amount of drama so that people forget that the Budget was ever presented. 
 
But not Prabhu. He’s busy chalking up one of the boldest Budget the Railways have seen till date and facing his challenges head on. 
I know, what you’re thinking- what a waste. 
 
And, at this point sirf Prabhu hi jaane kya hoga Indian Railways ka.

Every year has its own share of controversies and interesting twists and turns play a crucial role in the events. The year 2015 was no exception either. This year too, the country had its incidents, incidences and things that cropped up as aftermath, making some of them hot cakes in terms of news this year. 
 
As we close in on wrapping up the year, here’s what made the headlines in 2015 and shaped the country’s opinion both, socially and politically, sometimes ushering in major change in perception about the country in the world’s eyes. 
 
<keyword id="3119826" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Award-Wapsi">Award Wapsi</keyword> This must have been the most significant event of the year and happened right before the <keyword id="175111" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bihar-elections">Bihar elections</keyword>. Award wapsi, a movement of sorts, was started a little while after murder of rationalist thinker and writer M M Kalburgi in Karnataka. Writers Nayantara Sehgal and Uday Prakash were among those who set the tone. This year, the biggest literary event was not a book release or something, but more like a writer standing up for his right to speak what he sees as truth. The writers were chided for siding with Congress party since most of them received awards during the tenure of Congress government. 
 
National Herald case 
Apart from Award Wapsi, this was another headline grabber which almost made demi gods out of Congress first line leaders. AICC Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul Gandhi made an appearance in court over murky National Herald assets usurping case, which cost the country quite dearly since Congress stalled the discussions over some crucial issues such as GST in parliament, over ‘vendetta’ politics. 
 
Modi Pakistan-Afghan visit 
Towards the end of the year, the Prime Minister who has been jocularly targeted for his trips aboard sprang up a surprise and visited his counterpart in Pakistan absolutely out of turn, thus catching everyone by surprise. His move was both appreciated and criticized in equal measures by those who love him, and by those who simply didn’t like this approach. But, it looks like the White House seems to have welcomed this new found bonhomie between neighbours who have been sworn enemies over several issues. 
 
Shah Rukh, Aamir Khan’s (controversial) intolerance remarks 
This year when people spoke of social and cultural differences, they were targeted on social media and how! Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan who spoke against the rising incidents of ‘intolerance’ and the subsequent fear that has been the result of this, they were targeted badly for everything they said and did. Many from Bollywood including Raveena Tandon, Madhur Bhandarkar and Anupam Kher condemned these remarks made by the two Khans. The issue still simmers on. 
 
No women in temples, so what! 
It started with Ayyappan temple in Sabarimala, Kerala where a trustee said they would put scanners soon to keep menstruating women from visiting temples and angering the gods. Soon after, BJP leader Pankaja Munde in Mumbai seemed to have agreed with this line of thought. She asked, in all calm tone, yes women have not been allowed to visit temples in particular days. So what?! This irked feminists and people across the social media, who ensured their spoke their minds against this medieval stance against menstruating women. 
 
Meat ban during Paryushan Parva 
The BJP government in Maharashtra banned meat during the Jain fasting period called Paryushan Parva. This angered people from across social strata, who were sure that the BJP was driving a wedge between communities that ate meat and those that didn’t consume meat. This was called a social experiment of the worst kind, which would have repercussions on people’s food habits where forced opinions would mean democracy had ceased to exist even in people food habits. 
 
Sadhvi Prachi 
In keeping with the continued tradition of letting lose a volley of abuses and irrational statements, asking people to go to Pakistan if they were opposed to the ideologies of BJP government which predominantly upheld Hindu values and the way of life, that an alternate faith was next to impossible. Sadhvi Prachi being just a representative of all those medieval thoughts and barbaric mindset, kept the newspapers busy with her idiosyncrasies while BJP leadership failed to rein her in. 
 
Yakub Memon 
Hanging of 1997 Mumbai blast main accused Yakub Memon, who was held guilty by courts in 2007 the country witnessed some tense moments and swift working by the courts even on the previous night he was to be hanged on July 30. 
 
Though his death didn’t create a law and order situation, international media lost no opportunity to ensure this incident was bracketed under ‘intolerance’ towards Muslim brethren. 
 
Bihar elections 
This was the single most significant incident that probably indicated the image of BJP was on a journey downhill. Having doled out goodies in form of packages, and most engaging and intense campaigning by the who’s who of BJP including Amit Shah and PM Narendra Modi, the MahagatBandhan with Nitish Kumar and Lalu at the helm held people’s hopes. That is where exactly their votes went too. But in the run up to event, there was a lot of bad blood that spilled forth.

Political controversies that made headlines in 2015

Campaigning for the third and final phase of Bihar assembly elections in which 2.35 crore voters will decide the electoral fate of more than 1,200 candidates, including the Speaker and some members of the state cabinet, ended on Thursday evening. The final phase of polling on Saturday will cover 78 constituencies spread across 19 north Bihar districts. Leading from the front, Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> addressed rallies in remote districts of Araria and Saharsa for this phase of elections, exhorting the masses to retain their trust in the NDA. He asserted that the coalition headed in the state by Chief Minister and JD(U) president Nitish Kumar was looking forward to meet the "aspirations" of people in the decade to follow, having fulfilled their "needs" in the preceding one. Altogether 12 rallies were addressed by the Prime Minister, on whom the NDA banks for performing well in the 243 assembly constituencies across the state. Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi also addressed election meetings at Madhepura and Araria where he raised suspicions of poll rigging dubbing the EVMs as MVMs (Modi voting machines), drawing jeers from the BJP which claimed the opposition leader had lost his nerves in the face of an impending defeat. Chief Minister Nitish Kumars rallies continued to be in the news for unsavoury happenings. At an election rally in Madhubani, stones and onions were hurled towards the dais, evoking an angry retort from the incumbent "phenko, aur phenko" (carry on with your mischief). RJD chief ministerial candidate Tejashwi Yadav continued with his campaign, drawing enthusiastic crowds at his rallies, numerous in a day. Poll pundits are, however, of the view that after gaining momentum in the first phase, the RJD-led Grand Alliance has lost some steam in the subsequent ones. The BJP roped in many of its heavyweights for the assembly election campaign. Defence minister <keyword id="6355121" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rajnath-Singh">Rajnath Singh</keyword>, party president Jagat Prakash Nadda and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister <keyword id="43254" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Yogi-Adityanath">Yogi Adityanath</keyword> were among those who repeatedly flew down to the state urging voters to support the NDA. People also attended, in heavy numbers, rallies and road shows of LJP president <keyword id="5332" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chirag-paswan">Chirag Paswan</keyword> who has created a buzz by virtue of his strident criticism of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and the gumption to go solo despite repeated claims of loyalty towards the BJP. The final phase covers the Seemanchal area of the state, densely populated and having a heavy concentration of Muslims. AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi, who has joined a six- party coalition headed by RLSP president Upendra Kushwaha and including Mayawatis BSP, urged the minorities to shun the Congress-RJD combine, blaming these parties for the meteoric rise of the BJP and Modi. Prominent among those who would be seeking to retain their seats in the final phase are Speaker Vijay Kumar Chaudhary and state cabinet ministers Suresh Sharma and Pramod Kumar. Another candidate who has piqued curiosity is Subhashini Yadav, the Congress candidate from Bihariganj in Kishanganj district, better known as the daughter of veteran socialist leader and former Union minister Sharad Yadav. Armed with an MBA degree in marketing, the 30-year-old has made a sudden plunge into politics. Her assembly segment falls under Madhepura Lok Sabha seat which her father has won a number of times but lost in 2014 and failed to wrest back last year. Sharad Yadav had been the JD(U)s national president for long and served as the national convenor of the NDA until Nitish Kumar, the partys de facto leader, chose to snap ties with the BJP in 2013. He was stripped of the post a few years later when Kumar became the party president as well, and revolted when the latter did a volte face and returned to the NDA. The BJP had a 23.6% vote share while the JDU had a 21.8% vote share. The exit polls predicted a clear win for the Bharatiya Janata Party in Bihar. For the state of Bihar which has 40 Lok Sabha seats, the poll of polls predicted a 34-seat win for the National Democratic Alliance. Bihar’s Chief Minister Nitish Kumar from the Janata Dal political party has an alliance with the NDA. Business Insider compiled surveys from five reputed sources — Republic-C Voter, News18 - IPSOS, Today's Chanakya, India Today-Axis, and TimesNow - VMR — amongst many others and the final number is an average of these five polls. Political experts will always point out that dynasty politics is always deep rooted in Bihar. We see a number of examples even this time while we glance through the candidates contesting in the <keyword id="56978" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Lok-Sabha-elections">Lok Sabha elections</keyword> 2019. The results are awaited eagerly to know who the people are favoring this time to rule them from the center. There are 40 Lok Sabha constituencies in the state of Bihar. Among them. Not less than 26 are showing up candidates from highly familiar political families. The electoral battle in the state sees Mishra Bharti, the daughter of Lalu Prasad, Chandrika Rai, son of former chief minister Daroga Rai, Randhir Singh, the son of Prabhunath Singh, Meira Kumar and Kirti Azad, the Congress candidates, and Pashupati Nath Paras, the younger brother of Ram Vilas Paswan. Kirti Azad is actually the third inheritor from the family of a chief minister. His father is Bhagawat Jha Azad, who was the chief minister of Bihar during late nineteen eighties. The other lesser known inheritors of political families are Akilesh Singh, the grandson of Akhilesh Singh - Congress Rajya Sabha MP and Shashwat Kedar, the grandson of Kedar Pandey, the former chief minister. Ashok Yadav, the contesting candidate for Madhubani for BJP is the son of Hukumdeo Narayan Yadav, the sitting MP of BJP.

Bihar Lok Sabha Election Result 2019: NDA leaves barely any seats for Congress in the state

The children aged four to 12 fell ill on Tuesday after consuming a lunch of rice, soybean and lentils in the impoverished eastern state of <a class="cite">Bihar</a>.
The school, at Mashrakh village in the district of <a class="cite">Chapra</a>, provided free meals under the Mid-Day Meal Scheme, the world's largest school feeding program involving 120 million children.
Medical teams treating the children said they suspected the <a class="cite">food</a> had been contaminated with insecticide.
"It appears to be a case of poisoning but we will have to wait for forensic reports ... Had it been a case of (natural) <a class="cite">food</a> poisoning, so many children would not have died," <a class="cite">Poonam Kumari</a>, local government administrator at the village, told Reuters by phone from Mashrakh.
"The administration has helped cremate 21 children and, unfortunately, four more children have to be cremated," she said, adding that the remainder of a total of 48 children who consumed the contaminated <a class="cite">food</a> were being treated in <a class="cite">Patna</a>.
"We feel that some kind of insecticide was either accidentally or intentionally mixed in the <a class="cite">food</a>, but that will be clear through investigations," said R.K. Singh, medical superintendent at the children's hospital in the state capital <a class="cite">Patna</a>.
"We prepared antidotes and treated the children for organophosphorous poisoning," he said.
Organophosphorus compounds are used as pesticides.
The <a class="cite">state government</a> said it was investigating the cause of the disaster.
ACCUSATIONS
The school headmistress fled after the deaths became known and was dismissed,<a class="cite">P.K. Shahi</a>, <a class="cite">Bihar</a>'s education minister, told a news conference.
"In spite of the cook's complaint (over the smell of cooking oil used for the <a class="cite">food</a>), the headmistress insisted on its use and the cook made the <a class="cite">food</a>. The children had also complained about the <a class="cite">food</a> to the cook," <a class="cite">Shahi</a> said.
The cook, who also fell ill after eating the <a class="cite">food</a> and was hospitalized, told Reuters television it had looked as if there was a layer of residue at the bottom of the oil jar.
"I thought that this is locally-made oil as often there is an accumulation of residual waste at the bottom ... generally we get just about enough oil to prepare one meal, as there is no space for storage," <a class="cite">Manju Devi</a> said in Hindi.
Opposition parties accused the <a class="cite">Janata Dal</a> party-led government of acting too slowly to hospitalize the children and dozens of people took to the streets to protest, television channels showed.
Demonstrators pelted a police station with stones, set ablaze buses and other vehicles, chanted slogans denouncing the <a class="cite">state government</a> and burned effigies of<a class="cite">Bihar</a> Chief Minister <a class="cite">Nitish Kumar</a>.
"I feel that the government completely failed vis-a-vis the evacuation of the affected children," said <a class="cite">Rajiv Pratap Rudy</a>, a spokesman for the main federal opposition<a class="cite">Bharatiya Janata Party</a>, said.
"As soon as my boy returned from school, we rushed to the hospital with him," said<a class="cite">Raja Yadav</a>, the father of one schoolboy. "He was vomiting and he said his stomach was aching."
Three of the children being treated in the hospital were in critical condition, doctors and <a class="cite">Shahi</a> said.
Kumar has ordered an inquiry into the incident and has offered 200,000 rupees ($3,400) to the families of those who have died, state <a class="cite">food</a> minister <a class="cite">Shyam Rajak</a>said.
<a class="cite">Bihar</a>, bordering <a class="cite">Nepal</a>, is one of the most impoverished states in <a class="cite">India</a>, according to government data.
Kumar came to power in 2005, ousting a government which had been blamed for rampant corruption and sluggish growth in the poor eastern state.

Poisoned School Meal Kills 25 Indian Children

Today seems to be a good day for all social media fans in India. In the morning, Supreme Court of India gave Indian citizens the right to post on social media sites without any fear by striking down the draconian Section 66 A of the IT Act in its entirety. And right in the evening we got the news that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi (@narendramodi) has took another step in his Digital India initiative by launching ‘Twitter Samvad’, a service aimed to boost the nation’s e-governance plans by helping government bodies and leaders communicate directly with citizens on a daily basis via tweets and SMSes on their mobile devices.

Through ‘Twitter Samvad’, Government of India will share a set of curated tweets delivered from the government and leaders’ accounts to mobile users across the country as SMS—every day. Updates on government services, policies and activities can be delivered to any user with a mobile device signed up for the service with each of the 16 launch partners. Anyone with a mobile phone, with our without a data plan, can register for the service by giving a missed call to a unique number for each of the partners. 
 
Twitter CEO Dick Costolo, who met Prime Minister Modi to discuss areas of collaboration, said, “Based on Indian technological innovation, Twitter Samvad is dedicated and specially built for the largest democracy of the world. The Lok Sabha election of 2014 was the first-ever Twitter Election in India and we want to continue contributing to the development of digital governance in India. As part of the Prime Minister’s Digital India initiative, this Tweet-powered service enables citizens to be the first to know about the government’s actions by receiving political content in real-time on their mobile devices anywhere in the country.” 
 
The company is demonstrating its commitment to the Indian market by launching Twitter Samvad during the Twitter CEO’s first-ever visit to India. Rishi Jaitly, Twitter’s Market Director for India and Southeast Asia, said, “We are proud to have launched a service here that is for the people and of the people. This can eventually give every political leader and every government organization a mobile microphone to connect with each Indian, whether in Imphal or in Diu or in Leh or in Pudducherry.” 
 
Twitter Samvad is based on the platform provided by ZipDial, an Indian company recently acquired by Twitter, making this the company’s first Indian service launched using indigenous technology.
