<keyword id="6367143" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="lic" source="Orion">LIC</keyword>'s debt exposure in <keyword id="76451" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="adani" source="Orion">Adani</keyword> group companies fell marginally to Rs 6,183 crore as of March 5 from Rs 6,347 crore as of December 31, 2022, Parliament was informed on Monday. In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, <keyword id="25455" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="finance" source="Orion">Finance</keyword> Minister <keyword id="129243" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="nirmala-sitharaman" source="Orion">Nirmala Sitharaman</keyword> said, "The Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) has informed that its debt exposure to Adani Group of Companies, was Rs 6,347.32 crore and Rs 6,182.64 crore, as on December 31, 2022, and March 5, 2023, respectively". LIC has a debt exposure of Rs 5,388.60 in Adani Ports and SEZ as of March 5. The exposure in Adani Power (Mundra) was Rs 266 crore, Adani Power Maharashtra Ltd - Phase I (Rs 81.60 crore), Adani Power Maharashtra Ltd - Phase III (Rs 254.87 crore), Raigarh Energy Generation Ltd (Rs 45 crore) and Raipur Energen Ltd (Rs 145.67 crore), as per the reply. Sitharaman said five public sector general insurance companies have informed that they do not have loan/credit exposure to the Adani Group of Companies. "Public Sector Banks have informed that loans are sanctioned after assessing the viability of projects, prospective cash flows, risk factors and availability of adequate security and repayment of loans are ensured by the revenue generated by the project and not by the market capitalisation of the company," the minister said. US-based short seller Hindenburg in January made a litany of allegations, including fraudulent transactions and share-price manipulation, against the Adani group, following which shares of group companies had taken a beating. The group has dismissed the charges as lies, saying it complies with all laws and disclosure requirements. Jaipur, Dec 3 () Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Tuesday said the country is facing economic crisis due to "wrong" policies of the NDA government and states too were getting affected due to them.
 Gehlot said everyone should be concerned for the current situation of the economy because the growth rate has lowered, "there are no jobs" and trade and business are suffering.
 "A situation of economic crisis is there in the country today and not only the Centre, but we all should be concerned for that. People are losing jobs, businesses have been affected. The situation in the country is becoming very serious," he said at a function in the state secretariat here.
 He claimed the states' share of fund and grants were being cut considerably by the Centre.
 The chief minister said the Centre implemented the Goods and Services Tax (GST) in a "wrong" manner.
 "One nation one tax was there in the mind of former prime minister Manmohan Singh. It was a revolutionary step of him that there will be only one tax (slab) of 18 per cent but the government changed, different slabs were introduced, revenue too declined," he said.
 Gehlot said the recent comments of industrialists such as Rahul Bajaj would "wake up" the government.
 Bajaj, the chairman of Bajaj group, had openly told Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Home Minister Amit Shah and Railway Minister Piyush Goyal at a programme in Mumbai on Saturday that people were afraid of criticising the BJP government's policies and that no one in the business community would speak about economic issue.

<ul><li>The <keyword id="49488" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Lucknow-police">Lucknow police</keyword> are installing cameras with <keyword id="447510" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="facial-recognition-technology">facial recognition technology</keyword>, powered by <keyword id="107950" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="artificial-intelligence">artificial intelligence</keyword> (AI), in prominent harassment hotspots.</li><li>The cameras will gauge whether a woman is in distress based on her facial expression and send an alert to the police.</li><li>Anita Gurumurthy, founding member and executive director of IT for Change, called the idea “both absurd and undemocratic.”</li></ul> The <keyword id="6355192" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Lucknow">Lucknow</keyword> police seem to be dead serious about attempting to provide women with a sense of security, whether they want it or not. And, experts say, it is testing the fine line between safety measures and a person’s right to privacy. Sumathi Chandrashekaran, a policy lawyer, based in New Delhi, sums it up as follows. "This policy proposal is laughable and problematic in so many multiple dimensions, that it is hard to parse it into a coherent argument,” she told Business Insider. We just need to know where to draw the line as an informed consumer/citizen," she said. First up: Indian cops do not have a great track record in surveillance Anita Gurumurthy, founding member and executive director of IT for Change, called the idea “both absurd and undemocratic.” And she has her reasons. She cited the example of how cameras in metro trains have been instruments of voyeurism with law enforcers violating the privacy and dignity of women commuters. <div type="image" title="Anita Gurumurthy" msid="80423110" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;&amp;quot;These cameras are not likely to enable gender-responsive, victim-centric and rights-oriented policing, assuming the remote possibility that the distress captured is a real case and the response cycle agile enough.&amp;quot;&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> Secondly, the technology is untested, unproven “There are ethical concerns that need democratic deliberation because the AI does not discern the difference between socially meaningful ends and socially repressive and harmful ones,” Gurumurthy added. There are other practical problems for the cops as well. “In a situation wherein two women who are friends are having a heated conversation, an alert generated would only lead to unnecessary harassment by the police. If only certain alerts are responded to, the question that arises is who is making the decision about which alerts to respond to,” explained Anushka Jain, Associate Counsel (Transparency &amp; Right to Information) at the Internet Freedom Foundation. <div type="image" title="Anushka Jain" msid="80422387" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;&amp;quot;Misuse of this system is a very real problem that could arise wherein the women face harassment from the police itself or certain areas of the city being overpoliced.&amp;quot;&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> Not just that, Jain raised many pertinent questions, like: <ol><li>How and where will the data be stored?</li><li>Who will have access to the data and who will approve this access?</li><li>Who will be accountable for the misuse of information?</li><li>What if women get harassed by the police itself?</li></ol>“To ensure security in high crime areas, the simple solution would be to install more police personnel there. Installation of these cameras and the subsequent constant surveillance will only lead to more harm than benefits," said Jain. ‘The proposal to use facial recognition tech in this manner is legally untenable’ Chandrasekharan contends that technology is not foolproof. ‘Has the AI algorithm been tested for failures, biases, and the numerous other issues it will likely have?” she asked, highlighting that the policy strikes at the heart of the individual right to privacy. “Any act of surveillance has to pass through hoops of tests under law before it can be deemed a legitimate exercise,” she said. <div type="image" title="Sumathi Chandrashekaran" msid="80422345" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;&amp;quot;The presumptions underlying the deployment of the tech are fundamentally flawed: it reinforces classic stereotypes of women as victims and in need of protection, and tackles the act of sexual harassment post facto.&amp;quot; &amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> According to Chandrasekharan, if this kind of surveillance receives sanction, nothing prevents the state from invading our private spaces, like homes, more flagrantly, purportedly to "protect" us from becoming victims. “Actions like these are fundamentally opposed to democratic principles, and thus, untenable," she said.
