<ul><li>Consumption gaps between urban and rural markets narrowed down in the December quarter, for the first time in 2023.</li><li>Modern trade saw double-digit growth in consumption, but growth in <keyword id="20479724" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="traditional-trade" source="keywords">traditional trade</keyword> slipped sequentially.</li><li>Non-food category volumes grew sequentially but that of food slowed down, led by staples and impulse categories. </li></ul>Even as FMCG sales growth has been moderating on a sequential basis, sales of noodles and biscuits saw an uptick in the rural markets in the December quarter, says a NielsenIQ report. Rural markets too saw a sequential-quarterly decline, but consumption gaps between urban and rural markets narrowed down for the first time in 2023, in the December quarter. The North and West regions contributed to this phenomenon, the report says. “Despite a sequential-quarter decline, the rural recovery narrative continued to evolve throughout the year. In Q4 2023, we observe an uptick in consumption, primarily driven by habit-forming categories (such as biscuits and noodles) in food and essential home products. These categories have thrived despite flat to negative price growth, indicating resilience and sustained demand,” said <keyword id="20476060" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="roosevelt-dsouza" source="keywords">Roosevelt Dsouza</keyword>, Head of Customer Success – India, <keyword id="20475890" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="niq" source="keywords">NIQ</keyword>. The rural areas are also seeing a growing preference for larger packs, while urban markets see a persistent preference for larger packs, the report said. It says that the FMCG industry experienced a 6% growth in value, attributed to a 6.4% increase in volume. However, on a sequential basis, there is a moderation in consumption growth, it adds. The pricing growth in the overall fell to 2.7% in Q3, due to the price cuts taken across categories by FMCG majors to fight off competition. In the December quarter of last year, it was 10%, as per Nielsen data. FMCG major <keyword id="19948892" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hul" source="keywords">HUL</keyword> said that in Q3, its volumes grew 2% in Q3, but its value growth fell marginally by 0.3%. Marico’s domestic volumes grew 2% during the quarter, with a flat value growth. <keyword id="20021294" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kirana" source="keywords">Kirana</keyword> continue to suffer Modern trade which consists of supermarkets, hypermarkets and such has seen a double-digit growth in consumption at 16.8%. Traditional Trade which consists of kiranas or mom-and-pop stores saw a 5.3% growth in consumption, falling from 7.5% in the Q2 of FY24. “Despite certain challenges, the positive momentum in modern trade adds a promising dimension to the overall market scenario,” Nielsen says. Non-food categories grow faster The volume growth in general is also much faster for non-food categories. Though more units were purchased in food categories compared to the same period last year, non-foods saw more large packs being purchased. The volume growth in the food sector was at 5.3% YoY, but it was at 8.7% in Q2 of FY23. This slowdown in growth is primarily due to staples (such as refined and non-refined edible oils, etc.) and impulse categories such as confectionery. In non-food categories, volumes grew at 9.6% in Q3 FY24 — higher than the 8.7% recorded in Q2. This improvement can be attributed to an increase in rural consumption growth, with a growth rate of 9.8% (vs. 6.7% in Q2), Nielsen says. “Volume growth is attributed to home care products like detergent cakes and bars, washing powder; and personal care like toilet soaps categories in rural areas,” the report said. In urban areas, the non-food sector is witnessing slower consumption growth, with a growth rate of 9.4% in Q3, slightly down from 10.4% in Q2.

Amidst slowdown, noodle and biscuit sales see an uptick in rural areas

Drinking non-beer alcohol out of a can was supposed to be the healthier alternative. Hard seltzers, spiked seltzers, and their ilk have been marketed as lighter than traditional alcoholic beverages. Their alcohol content is beer-ish, but the impact on your waistline isn't. To the extent that drinking alcohol is healthy, which it isn't, and assuming you're not a frat boy downing 12 White Claws in 90 minutes, the new category was meant to fill the slightly-better-for-you niche. Maybe the initial marketing was a little female-focused, but a lot of the guys came around. A sparkly little grapefruit-flavored malt beverage at the beach is a delight across the gender spectrum. Plus, who doesn't love to skip a bit of that beer-induced bloat?But these prepackaged on-the-go drinks have evolved, and in many cases they've become much boozier. People aren't just picking up 5% ABV hard seltzers on the way to the park; they're grabbing prepackaged gin and tonics and negronis and margaritas that have much more of a kick to them. The hard seltzers now come in supercharged varieties, too. Brands living on the same shelf can have a wide variety of effects: Nutrl Spirits will hit you like a regular seltzer, while Cutwater will screw you up. Both are owned by Budweiser's parent company, Anheuser-Busch InBev, which has reported double-digit growth in volume for its spirits-based portfolio this year. The next time you grab a drink in a can, you might want to take a second look at the ABV — or be prepared to wind up under the table.Ready-to-drink alcoholic beverages — industry speak for canned and bottled non-beer drinks — have been around for a long time. Smirnoff Ice, Mike's Hard Lemonade, and Twisted Tea were introduced around the turn of the century. In the 2010s, the hard seltzers started to pop up, with names like White Claw and Truly, both of which launched in 2016. Their ABV was typically similar to the average beer, somewhere between 4% and 6%. The pandemic supercharged the trend: The bars closed, and people were left to their own devices, alcohol-wise — and they were <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/experts-say-coronavirus-may-cause-spike-in-alcohol-abuse-2020-3">drinking more</a>, too."During the pandemic, hard seltzers really blew up, and I think hard seltzers are one of those ones that were perceived as a little bit of a better-for-you option," said Kaleigh Theriault, an associate director of beverage-alcohol thought leadership at NIQ, a market research firm. Unfortunately, there's no kind of alcohol that's actually better for you, but the companies leaned in — many of the drinks were positioned as low-calorie, low-carb, low-sugar, etc., and many still are.NIQ dubbed 2020 the "summer of seltzers." Recognizing the drinks' popularity, a bunch of companies threw their hat in the ring, including AB InBev and Coca-Cola. The market got saturated, and people started to realize there could be a lot more to canned alcohol than beer and hard seltzers."There's so many more products available that another lime hard seltzer probably isn't going to get much shelf space," said Chris Budzik, a senior market analyst at IWSR, which covers the alcoholic-beverage industry. "So companies are having to innovate more and more, and that has led to some higher-ABV canned cocktails." According to NIQ, "fourth category" sales — meaning ready-to-drink and ready-to-serve alcoholic beverages — have reached $13.1 billion in sales over the past year, up from $12.6 billion in the year before and $11.8 billion two years ago. It now represents 12% of total alcohol sales in dollars. Hard-seltzer sales are at $3.7 billion, but they've declined by 13.1% over the past year as they've come back down to a post-pandemic earth. Meanwhile, spirits-based drinks are up by 22.5%, to $2.5 billion. (Flavored malt beverages, such as Cayman Jack, are up too, by 9.9%, to $5.4 billion.)A lot of these spirits-based drinks have a higher ABV, in part because they have to — there's just no way to make a low-alcohol Manhattan. You add vodka or gin or tequila to the mix, and the alcohol content goes up. And as consumers have been introduced to the idea of drinks in a can, they've expanded their horizons. If I can have a mediocre hard seltzer on the go, why not up my game and get a nice crisp G&amp;T? The authenticity of the spirit in the drink is appealing.Kate Bernot, the lead analyst at Sightlines, an analyst group that covers the alcohol industry, said there were three main factors in the growth of the RTD cocktail sector and the accompanying increased booziness: consumer taste, corporate ambition, and state policy.People are jazzed about the idea of getting something prepackaged (and cheaper) at a store. It's expensive and annoying to buy all the ingredients you need to concoct an espresso martini or a mai tai at home, and sometimes you just don't want to go to a bar. You might as well just grab a Cutwater. The portability is also a big draw: You can bring a few cans to the beach with you, or grab a six-pack on the way to a dinner as a substitute for the bottle of wine you might normally give the host."There's genuine consumer organic excitement," Bernot said.Given the fast-rising popularity of RTD alcoholic beverages, there are a lot of new brands — many have been on the shelf for less than a year. The next time you go to the liquor store or wherever it is in your area that's allowed to sell alcohol, take a look at all the options — there are probably a lot of names you've never even heard of."There are just so many more options nowadays," Theriault, from NIQ, said. "It's also overwhelming. "Various states have passed laws to allow distilled-spirits products like canned cocktails to be sold in places where they previously couldn't be or have changed the structure of how such beverages are taxed. Pennsylvania changed its laws to let grocery stores and convenience stores sell canned cocktails of up to 12.5% ABV starting in September. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/2021/05/24/michigan-canned-cocktail-laws/7419661002/">Michigan</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://thehill.com/homenews/state-watch/3515777-vermont-lowers-ready-to-drink-spirits-taxes/">Vermont</a> have lowered RTD taxes. Bernot described the changes as a result of "a combination of consumer demand, more brands, and more retail access." It's kind of impossible not to notice the proliferation of canned cocktails — which are increasingly available at sporting events and concerts and even at bars — especially in a moment when the service sector is struggling to find workers. They're now common in social settings; buying a six-pack of canned margaritas isn't that different from picking up a six-pack of beers. But they also come with some risks for those not in the know. A friend and I regularly go on walks with her dog in my neighborhood, accompanied by a couple of cans of gin and tonic. The other day I pointed out to her that the ABV on those little cans was three times a Bud Light — she had no idea.The surprise booziness of some of the canned cocktails has become a bit of a meme. Someone <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/tylathecreative/status/1832996136824566176">recently posted</a> a picture of a Cutwater lemon-drop martini accompanied by the caption "I just drank two of these and now I'm responding to everyone's Instagram story like they sent it to me personally." Probably because those puppies are 11% ABV. People who are choosing spirits over beer more often are consuming a lot more alcohol per drink than they used to.It's not just the canned cocktails that are getting drunker, either. White Claw and Truly now make extra-alcoholic varieties. Canned wines can be pretty dangerous, because a lot of people don't realize that they often actually have two glasses, not one. And last year, Modelo surpassed Bud Light as the most popular beer in America; its ABV is slightly higher. IPAs with high alcohol content have proliferated. One of the <a target="_blank" href="https://vinepair.com/booze-news/voodoo-ranger-ipa-collection-sales/#:~:text=So%20Is%20the%20Second.,-words%3A%20Olivia%20White&amp;text=Voodoo%20Ranger%20Imperial%20IPA%20is,to%20new%20data%20from%20Brewbound.">most popular craft beers in the country</a> is Voodoo Ranger Imperial IPA, which is 9% ABV and also comes in a 19.2-ounce can, if that's something you're into."What a time to be alive," Bernot said. "That's just a lot of beer, man."Budzik said he'd "personally noticed that the 8% double IPAs have become the standard."<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/beverage-analysts-predict-non-alcoholic-spirits-to-grow-in-2022-2021-11">Nonalcoholic beverages</a>, like zero-proof beers and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sober-bars-booming-across-country-alcohol-free-lifestyle-dry-january-2023-1">mocktails</a>, are growing, too, which has led to almost a hollowing out of the middle on alcohol. Either people are getting really drunk or they're not drinking. At this point, a run-of-the-mill lager or seltzer is basically considered a light option.Trends are constantly coming and going, including in alcohol. In such a crowded industry, there's no guarantee all these brands and drinks will stick around."When something becomes popular, it's going to get some play. Products are going to come out that reflect that," Budzik said. "Will they still be here in five years? Who knows."So I guess if there's a canned cocktail you're really into, maybe stock up. Or get ready to figure out how to do some mixology on your own. <ul class="summary-list"><li>A Swiss International Air Lines flight diverted to Kazakhstan due to a medical emergency.</li><li>The Boeing 777 came off the runway in Astana and got stuck, leaving over 300 passengers stranded.</li></ul>Over 300 airline passengers have been rescued after spending an unexpected day in Kazakhstan.Saturday's <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/emergency-landing-newark-passenger-tried-to-enter-cockpit-2024-4">Swiss International Air Lines</a> flight from Tokyo to Zurich changed course about halfway through the 14-hour journey, according to data from <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.flightradar24.com/data/flights/lx161#36aca1e9">Flightradar24</a>.An airline spokesperson said this was due to a medical incident on board.They added that, after landing in Astana, the Kazakh capital, "the passenger concerned was handed over to medical personnel on site."However, the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/british-airways-boeing-777-new-york-london-economy-review-2024-3">Boeing 777</a> ran into difficulty as it prepared to take off again.The taxiway at Astana Airport was closed, meaning the pilots had to try to turn the plane around while still on the runway, the airline spokesperson said.However, the maneuver was unsuccessful, with the plane's landing gear becoming stuck in the grass.The Boeing 777 was towed back onto the runway, and the airline considered how to get the passengers back on course."As rebooking options in Astana are limited, the possibility of sending a new aircraft and crew from Zurich is also being examined," the airline said on Saturday.Ultimately, its sister company, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-airlines-in-world-united-qatar-qantas-etihad-latam-airhelp-2022-12">Austrian Airlines</a>, stepped in to help. Both carriers are part of the Lufthansa group.An Austrian Boeing 777 flew from Vienna to Astana on Saturday night before returning the following day — taking off 20 hours after the first plane landed in Kazakhstan. The Swiss spokesperson said there were 331 people on board.Swiss then dispatched another 777 to transport passengers from Vienna to Zurich — about 370 miles."We thank all our passengers for their understanding and patience in this exceptional and unforeseen situation," the airline said."We apologize once again for any inconvenience caused," it added. "A big thank you also goes to all the employees involved for their tireless and outstanding efforts."

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Gen Alpha tweens are driving a surge in skincare sales, spending significantly in Sephora stores.</li><li>Gen Alphas that BI spoke with weren't convinced antiaging was behind their enthusiasm.</li></ul><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/who-is-generation-alpha-how-shop-spend-education-work-live-2024-1">Gen Alpha</a> is fueling sales in skincare, with many tweens blowing their pocket money on expensive cosmetics.It could be that they are just the latest generation plagued by worries of aging, made all the worse by social media.Gen Alpha tweens who spoke with Business Insider are unconvinced that fear of aging is behind their new obsession. They simply love the feel of the products and the act of comparing their new purchases with one another.But skincare and marketing experts point to body image, social media's emphasis on antiaging, and targeted ads as possible reasons driving the trend, as well as the insecurities of the generations above trickling down and shaping the mental health of the youngest age group.<h2 id="d9c21822-89d1-4edc-b8ee-7af5ab06077e">Gen Alpha's spending power</h2>By all accounts, Gen Alpha is going to be <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/biggest-luxury-buyers-gen-y-z-alpha-2023-2">a mighty generation of big spenders</a>.They're already getting started. Instead of gloopy, bright pink Barbie makeup and garish colorful eyeshadow palettes that millennials and some Gen Zers bought growing up, Gen Alphas — aged 14 and under — are saving up for cosmetics that set them back $50-$100 each or more.Earlier this year, <a target="_blank" href="https://nielseniq.com/global/en/landing-page/campaign-landing-page/gen-alpha-skin-care/">a report by the consumer behavior data company NIQ</a> found that 49% of the mass growth in skincare sales in 2023 in the US was driven by Gen Alpha. US households with tweens aged between six and 12 grew their skincare sales by 27.2% that year, the report found.On TikTok, "Sephora" tweens have been enraging older generations, who claim kids are buying up all the sought-after products, clogging up the aisles, and messing up displays.This has culminated in them earning the slightly disparaging label of "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sephora-kids-gen-alpha-tiktok-trend-explained-2024-1">10-year-old girls in Sephora"</a> as millennials and Zoomers brandish them as "insane" and "out of control."But Gen Alpha skincare enthusiasts are taking their newfound habit seriously.Janice Miller, a VP at the marketing agency The Bliss Group, told BI her 13-year-old daughter and friends spend "a huge amount of money" on skincare products at Sephora and Ulta Beauty."She gets up an hour before I do to do her skincare regimen in the morning, and she also has a regimen at night and never misses it," Miller said.When Miller asked her daughter what she likes about buying skincare, she said she started getting interested in it because she had acne a couple of years ago. It cleared up after visiting a dermatologist, who recommended special creams, as well as medicated sunscreen and moisturizer. After seeing the effects, she was hooked."Whenever there's a special occasion, I ask my parents to get me products, and my friends also give me products, and we sometimes trade," she said. "I had about $1,000 saved up last year, but I've spent most of it on products, so I don't have any money left."Jenny Grant Rankin, an educational researcher and author, told BI her 14-year-old daughter, Piper Virginia Rankin, also spends all her money on skincare.Piper told BI she started getting interested in it when she was 11, from family, friends, and social media, and now her routine makes her feel "comfortable, confident, and hygienic."Usually, she gets her recommendations from her peers on social media, she said.<h2 id="0329de26-82b2-48e4-8a17-0b0bfbcb3533">Antiaging products</h2>Medical and marketing experts are noticing a skincare boom, too.Valerie Aparovich, a certified cosmetologist-aesthetician and the science team lead at the skincare product scanner OnSkin, told BI there has been "unprecedented Gen Alpha engagement" on the app this year.Aparovich said she has seen Gen Alpha girls posting "get ready with me" videos on YouTube and TikTok, where they show off and recommend the skincare products they use.Shayan Cheraghlou, a resident physician at NYU School of Medicine, told BI skincare is a "huge trend" that he has observed at pediatric dermatology clinics, but with a concerning side effect."I've seen kids using expensive vitamin C serums that are completely unnecessary for their age group," he said, as well as some antiaging products, such as retinol, that can damage young skin.There isn't a simple answer to why anyone aged 14 and under is interested in antiaging products.Miller and Rankin's daughters both said antiaging wasn't something they thought about during their beauty hauls. It may be that young consumers don't understand the difference between the products that are beneficial and the ones that aren't.However, a recent study by the wellness brand Thorne and YouGov looked into Gen Alpha's sentiment around aging. The survey of nearly 3,000 respondents included 537 US-based 13- to 17-year-olds who were asked about antiaging, skincare, and beauty.The study found that 15% of the Gen Alpha kids felt depressed about aging and that 51% of them would spend more than $100 a month to slow or combat aging, compared to 24% of millennials and 15% of Gen Z.Gen Alphas surveyed were also four times more worried about wrinkles and fine lines than other generations.<h2 id="1c770c18-fdbc-4436-aebb-f79fe15a11a0">Where influences lie</h2>It may be that Gen Alpha kids are learning from their parents as children of millennials and Gen Zers.Zoomers under age 30 are helping drive <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/botox-injections-fillers-plastic-surgery-gen-z-social-media-filters-2024-5">demand for injectables such as filler and Botox</a>, BI's Eve Upton-Clark reported, with tweakments being the latest status symbol. The number of Botox injections in the US, in particular, jumped by 73% between 2019 and 2022.It's "worth noting" that millennials were the ones to popularize "get ready with me" content and makeup tutorials on social media, Dr. Geeta Yadav, a board-certified dermatologist and the founder of FACET Dermatology, told BI.She said she thinks children in Gen Alpha have been influenced by content creators and their older relatives, similar to how Y2K fashion is having a resurgence.Dr. Yadav said she thinks there is some component of anxiety regarding aging with this trend, and older generations could be partially to blame."Those who came of age in the early 00s and before were subjected to horribly aggressive and demeaning beauty standards, which damaged a lot of women's self-esteem and self-image," she said.Learning not to pass along that messaging, which is deeply ingrained, can be incredibly difficult, she added.There have been positive shifts regarding beauty standards, more size inclusivity, and young consumers demanding more skin tone diversity and range with their products. But "aging is one hurdle that we have yet to cross," Dr. Yadav said, especially with so many advances in skincare that make people look younger for longer."As millennials continue to age and continue to obsess about looking young, that can send a very loud message to Gen Alpha about aging and beauty standards," she said.Alexandra Forsyth, a consumer retail and cyber security expert at AFRG, told BI she doesn't believe Gen Alphas are particularly interested in antiaging, but brands are pushing their messaging onto them."This raises eyebrows but also prompts serious questions about the influences shaping this young generation," she said.Forsyth said children, sometimes as young as seven or eight, are posting about their skincare routines. Some tweens <a target="_blank" href="https://mashable.com/article/sephora-tweens-teens-drunk-elephant">spoke with Mashable about their adult skincare habits</a>, and one, named Maeve, suggested the fad was more about having what everyone else has."I didn't know I wanted it, and then when I see that someone else has it and how they use it, I realize it's something I'd actually use a lot," she said.So it may be that they're doing much of the heavy lifting of marketing campaigns themselves."It's not necessarily that they're looking toward older people to influence them," Forsyth said. "They're influencing each other."

Gen Alpha tweens are fueling sales in skincare. It isn't just because they are worried about wrinkles.

The US Department of Agriculture <a href="https://www.ams.usda.gov/mnreports/pybshellegg.pdf">recently reported</a> that wholesale egg prices have fallen to an average price anywhere from $1 to $1.40 across various regions of the country. Prices finally started to fall in recent months for eggs and other grocery staples like bacon, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/eggs-price-bacon-milk-cheaper-inflation-bird-flu-chickens-groceries-2023-3">Insider previously reported</a>.The most recent data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics' Consumer Price Index found that egg prices had fallen to about $3.27 per dozen in April, and the Journal reported data from research firm NIQ, which found prices were about $2.70 per dozen by the end of April.The USDA has reported an increase in the egg-laying hen population across the US of about 5% compared to last May, and a bump of about 1% from April to May, according to the Journal.While the calming of the bird flu outbreak will contribute to lower prices, they may never fall all the way back to pre-inflation prices, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-are-eggs-expensive-cage-free-range-chickens-ethical-2023-3">Insider's Hannah Getahun reported</a> earlier this year. This is largely because more farmers are transitioning to what's thought by many to be more ethical forms of egg production, including putting an emphasis on cage-free environments for their hens, which takes up more space and is usually more expensive.
