According to him, ONDC will not be limited to a few players but everyone in India - a person owning a small grocery store, a small electronics retailer or a restaurant owner - bringing millions of such people to the e-commerce marketplace and buyers will come from any consumer app. "Today, India has achieved financial inclusion in about seven-eight years with homegrown technologies like Aadhaar, UPI, QR code and more. ONDC to foster hyperlocal ecommerce business model in India: Nandan Nilekani

Infosys untouchable, ‘not even God’ will find evidence of fraud

Mumbai, Dec 22 () Avanti Finance, the microloan-focused NBFC promoted by Ratan Tata and Nandan Nilekani from their personal philanthropic funds, is looking to raise USD 30-40 million (up to about Rs 285 crore) in fresh equity from impact investors and domestic financial institutions to fuel growth. 
 The Tata Group patriarch and IT maverick invested Rs 50 crore each, two years ago into the Bengaluru-headquartered company to part help a "population-scale problem with a population-size solution", said Avanti Finance Chief Executive Rahul Gupta, who spent over two decades with GE Capital before taking up this job. 
 Avanti Finance is a financial inclusion platform built on an open-access digital model to create and deploy financial products in a touchless, presence-less and cashless interface to reach out to the unserved, under-served and the excluded at a hyperlocal level.
 "We are looking at raising USD 30-40 million in growth capital by March-April 2020. New equity capital will be raised through diluting the promoters' stake. Being an impact-focused entity, we are looking at onboarding impact investors and domestic financial investors," Gupta told .
 In less than 18 months of operations, Avanti Finance has reached out to over 20,000 needy people and hopes to take this to over 2 lakh by 2022, Gupta said, adding that so far it has lent Rs 80 crore loans through its balance sheet. 
 However, the company plans to do more off-balance sheet lending going forward through loan co-origination with banks and cooperatives to reach out to more people to achieve its target of serving at least 2 lakh customers by 2022.
 "We are planning an on-balance sheet loan book of Rs 1,000 crore and an off-balance sheet loan book of at least Rs 3,000 crore by 2022," Gupta said.
 He also informed that both Tata and Nilekani have been returning every penny earned from operations to the company.
 Avanti Finance is present in 25 districts across seven states (Bihar, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Maharashtra, MP, TN and UP) and operates through commercial and non-profit partners to meet the founders' objectives of helping the needy in the most cost-effective manner.

New Delhi, Mar 9 () The finance ministry has asked Infosys to provide within 15 days a plan for quick resolution of glitches on the GSTN portal, as it took strong note of the "unresolved" problems and "tardy" progress made over the last two years on multiple issues faced by taxpayers in filing returns. On Saturday, Revenue Secretary held a meeting with top Infosys officials on the persistent glitches seen on GST network, and decided to ask Infosys Chairman Nandan Nilekani to make an urgent presentation before the GST Council on March 14. Meanwhile, in a strongly worded letter to Infosys on March 5, the ministry said some of the problems highlighted as early as 2018 are still unresolved and failures month after month lead to genuine taxpayers "getting frustrated". "It is requested to go through the pending issues, day-to-day disruptions and the future road map and come up with a plan for quick resolution within 15 days. Infosys has set high international standards and it is expected that the efficiency which your organisation is known for should be visible in GST project also," the ministry said in the letter to Infosys. Infosys declined to comment on the matter. The IT company has developed the software for GST Network (GSTN) -- which provides the technology backbone for Goods and Services Tax (GST). Highlighting the issues faced on the GSTN portal, the ministry said even though the GST system has been in operation for the last 30 months, there have been instances of taxpayer complaints on facing issues in filing returns in the last two days of filing of returns (for GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B). "It is noticed that MSP (Master Service Provider) M/s Infosys have been repeatedly asked to take timely action and to identify the root cause of issues after each event and taken corrective action. However, problem still persists," it said. The ministry said such glitches on the portal leads to an unhealthy tax compliance requirement more so when on account of such disruptions some taxpayers end up becoming liable for payment of late fee, interest. The ministry has been working to shore up GST revenues. During April-January period this fiscal, GST collection stood at Rs 10.19 lakh crore, down from Rs 11.7 lakh crore in the year-ago period. Chairman of Wipro, <keyword id="197349" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rishad-Premji">Rishad Premji</keyword>, feels that big data can be harnessed and that India has only "scratched the surface," of new technologies. Credit will follow the data "Historically, lending in India has been to big guys in large amounts for a long time for assets. A lot of challenges we have today are because of that," stated Nilekani. The boom in data can be a boon for small businesses. Flow-based lending means that small businesses will be able to raise small, short-term working capital loans. In cash flow lending, companies are allowed to borrow money based on the projected future cash flows. "So, millions of businesses that don’t have access to credit today will get access," he said. Around seven to eight businesses have in-principle approval from the RBI for account aggregation and 30-40 startups working on flow based lending. Even big banks are showing interest in this model. "Credit will be first example of data being empowered for users," said Nilekani.

 More internet penetration, but is it enough More people in India have access to internet in India than ever before but the infrastructure and connectivity is far from ideal, more so outside the big cities — even with credit or debit card transactions. Force of habit It’s not about knowing that you can make payments using the internet, it’s also about habit. Limited digital literacy The biggest hurdle in the committee’s way isn’t access to internet but digital literacy. Educating the masses so that they are able to use these apps will be a prerequisite. Even among those who are familiar with digital modes, a large section of Indians are still paranoid about the safety of online transactions. The question of security A report by Qualcomm states that a lot of wallets and banking apps in India lack the requisite hardware security. And since they run on Android accommodating versions that lack the latest security updates, they are relatively more vulnerable to being hacked. The question isn’t only of alphanumeric passwords but also biometrics, like your fingerprint.  Security and trust are two different things Even with best security in place, the people will only use digital payments if there’s trust. The recent data leaks and reports of insider fraud at PayTM have not helped that cause. Most people prefer cash in the country because it doesn’t leave a digital footprint under the perception that having every transaction scrutinized could lead to more trouble. Nilekani, one of the founders of Indian tech services major Infosys, is often eulogized for creating the Aadhaar framework, but notwithstanding the magnitude of the exercise, the unique identity project has had its share of chinks. Another twitter user, Srinivas Kodali, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/indian-government-portal-leaks-8-9mn-aadhaar-details-again/articleshow/63924186.cms">exposed</a> how 8.9 million Aadhaar numbers were vulnerable. Aadhaar was still a mode for people to receive government benefits and cash transfer. It will take a lot more time and effort to convince penny-wise Indians to risk their money in digital payment apps.

Can Nilekani, the architect of the world’s largest biometric project, spark digital payments in India?

Venture capital giant <keyword id="144381" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Accel-Partners">Accel Partners</keyword> and <keyword id="3267567" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Infosys-cofounder-Nandan-Nilekani">Infosys cofounder Nandan Nilekani</keyword> has funded the robotics firm <keyword id="3267189" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Systemantics">Systemantics</keyword>, which builds industrial robots for the manufacturing sector. The last time it had received funding was in 2013, when <keyword id="592779" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Blume-Ventures">Blume Ventures</keyword> had invested in the firm. 
 Systemantics was founded by IIT-Madras alumni <keyword id="3267568" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Jagannath-Raju">Jagannath Raju</keyword> in 1995. 
 
This is the seventh venture that Nilekani has backed. He has earlier invested in early-stage start-ups which he believes to be building highly impactful disruptive ideas. 
 In the past one year, Nilekani has backed Team Indus, Fortigo, Mubble, Juggernaut, Lets-Venture and <keyword id="1501494" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Power2sme">Power2SME</keyword>, while co-investing in a number of these ventures with Accel, including Fortigo and Power2SME. 
 Even though Systemantics likes to keep a low profile, it has quietly worked on custom robotics projects with the Government, as well as with tech giants like <keyword id="6359357" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Titan">Titan</keyword> and Hindustan Aeronautics (<keyword id="68124" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="HAL">HAL</keyword>).

Nandan Nilekani funds robotics firm Systemantics

<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=nandan+nilekani&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Infosys cofounder Nandan Nilekani</a> has invested a Bengaluru-based startup-10i Commerce Services, which is helping small shops fight online and organised retailers. 
 
10i is giving traditional small retail stores a technology platform-ShopX-to fight disruption from <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=etailers&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">e-tailers</a>. 
 
Nilekani invested Rs 25-30 crore in the startup and is the sole investor in it. 
 
As per reports, this is Nilekani's largest investment in a startup after funding around $7.5 million in Sedemac. This is also Nilekani’s 12th investment in a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=startup&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">startup</a>. 
 
"Technology was always a passion. I always wanted to use technology to solve problems for India at a large scale. The ambition was always to reach the masses. Always wanted to do something that reaches hundreds of millions of people, not the elite few people who stay in large cities, who have access to a lot more," 10i co-founder Amit Sharma told ET. 
 
"I was reluctant to get involved at first, but they kept cajoling me. And, as I looked deeper at what they were trying, I thought it was extremely interesting," Nilekani told ET, confirming that 10i was the "stealth-mode" startup that he has been helping over the course of the past year. 
 
"What 10i is trying to do with ShopX is provide the traditional, small retailer the same level of technology, logistics, sophistication and supply which ecommerce or organised retail gives. So, that's what attracted me to it - using technology you can aggregate hundreds of thousands of small retailers and give them access to the best products, give them access to the best technology and so on," said Nilekani.
