<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://www.nikonsmallworld.com/">Vin Kitayama and Sanae Kitayama/Nikon Small World</a></span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>What you're looking at above is not bubbles of melted gold on a rusted surface.</p><p>It's dried-up blobs of espresso coffee.</p><p>The high-power microscope image is part of <a href="http://www.nikonsmallworld.com/">Nikon Small World</a>, a contest that awards cash prizes for the most amazing microscope photos from around the world <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/best-microscope-images-nikon-2015-10">each year</a>.</p><p>This particular image is one of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/best-microscope-photography-nikon-small-world-2016-10">dozens of stunning finalists</a> that judges hand-picked from thousands of entries, and I can see why. (I was a judge for the competition's <a href="http://www.nikonsmallworld.com/galleries/photo/2014-photomicrography-competition">40th anniversary</a> in 2014.)</p><p>Under normal conditions, a view like this might appear fuzzy and washed-out. But by using a microscope with a special polarizing filter, which cancels out the glare of light that reflects off shiny objects, the true colors of the dried espresso break through.</p><p>The photomicrograph was taken by artist and environmental scientist <a href="https://twitter.com/vinsanchi">Vin Kitayama</a>, who runs the Vinsanchi Art Museum in Japan, and his wife Sanae Kitayama.</p><p>"During my research, I discovered the mystery and beauty of natural design that is hidden in one small drop of coffee," Vin wrote in his photo entry. "The natural gold color in this photograph reminds me of the beautiful gold that you sometimes can see in the finest traditional Japanese lacquer work, such as created by the famous artist, Korin, about three hundred years ago."</p><p>The couple said the technique they used to take this photo was "developed over a long period" and took "a most difficult process" to get the espresso to crystallize. Teva vs. Chaco - here's how the 2 popular sport sandals stack up

We pored over more than 1,200 images from 79 countries before choosing 20 winners based on quality, uniqueness, and difficulty.</p><p>This year looked even harder. Judges had to pick 20 top photos out more than 2,000 entries submitted from 83 countries. The 20 most incredible microscope photos of the year

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Nikon just announced the winning images featured in its 40th annual <a href="http://www.nikonsmallworld.com/galleries/entry/2014-photomicrography-competition/1" target="_blank">Small World Photomicrography contest</a>.</p>
<p>These images showcase the minute structures, cells, and living creatures we might come across in our daily lives but never notice. When magnified, however, these tiny things are revealed in all their breathtaking beauty.</p>
<p>The contest is an annual competition that features the work of scientists and photographers from around the world.</p>
<p>First-time first-place winner Rogelio Moreno of Panama won for his image of a miniscule freshwater creature known as the rotifer. Moreno captured the tiny critter with its mouth open - a chance event.</p>
<p>"When you see that movement, you fall in love. I thought, 'Wow, that is amazing. I can't believe what I'm seeing. This is something very, very beautiful,'" Moreno said in a press release. "I hope now it can inspire others as much as it has inspired me - to learn about <keyword id="41551" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="science">science</keyword>, to look closely and notice something truly amazing."</p>

But at some point <a href="https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/science-sushi/evolution-out-of-the-sea/">around 430 million years ago</a>, plants and early animals left their watery cradle and journeyed landward, eventually colonizing the bare expanses of our planet's continents.</p><p>Scientists posit that plants were the first pioneers to make this trek from sea to land. Now, a billion-year-old fossil discovery shows that fungi may have led the way 500 million years earlier than we thought. </p><p><a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-019-1217-0">In a new study</a> published in the journal Nature, researchers describe a fungus they discovered in a billion-year-old bed of shale rock in the Northern Territories area of Canada, which they named <em>Ourasphaira giraldae. </em>The ancient fungus is the ancestor of today's mushrooms, yeasts, and molds, and lived in at the mouth of a river between 890 million and 1.1 billion years ago. This is hundreds of millions of years before the advent of complex lifeforms.</p><p>The finding is "reshaping our vision of the world," lead author of the new study Corentin Loron told Business Insider. </p><h2>The finding pushes back the known age of fungi</h2><p>Though the term might bring to mind poisonous mushrooms or the mold on aging cheese, there are at least 120,000 types of fungi that do everything from treating pnemonia to breaking down food in cow's digestive tracts.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://www.nikonsmallworld.com/">Dean Lerman/Nikon Small World</a></span></p><p class="caption">Fungi include molds that grow on foods like this tomato.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>While scientists had a sense that fungi were some of the oldest known organisms on Earth, it was very difficult to confirm this theory because fungi rarely fossilize.</p><p>DNA analyses of the <span>genes from existing fungi reveal that their common</span> ancestor should be about a billion years old. But, until this discovery, scientists<span> couldn't confirm that idea because</span> the oldest fungi fossils ever found only dated back some 400 million years.</p><p>The <em><span>Ourasphaira giraldae </span></em><span>find, </span><span>which is more than twice as old as the 400-million-year fossils, </span><span>helps "confirm those theoretical models" about the older origins of fungi, according to Loron.</span></p><p><span><a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S030192681830216X">The fossils were first discovered in 2014</a> by one of the study's co-authors, Robert Rainbird, who then shared the discovery with Loron and their colleagues. It took many years of work to determine what these microscopic fossils actually were, however.</span></p><p>The scientists used<span> electron microscopes</span> to determine that the fossils were indeed fungi by identifying a substance called chitin in the specimen's cell walls. If the oldest fungi in the fossil record are 1 billion years old, that means fungi were around first - holding down the fort, as it were, solo for some 500 million years.</span></p><p>"We are far before the emerging of land plants," Loron said. He's referring to the earliest microscopic members of the animal kingdom. "We're not talking about anything big like dinosaurs. It would be something very simple. "At the same time, this image is about form, rhythm and composition. <p>On Earth, something is <a href="http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/GlobalMaps/view.php?d1=MOD14A1_M_FIRE">always burning.</a> Occasionally, large wildfires send <a href="http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/NaturalHazards/view.php?id=83102&amp;">vast plumes of smoke</a> streaming into the atmosphere, but most fires are much less dramatic when viewed from space, appearing in images as small blotches of light just a few <a href="http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Glossary/index.php?xref=pixel">pixels</a> wide. Most of the smaller fires are prescribed burns <a href="http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Search/index.php?hq=site%3Aearthobservatory.nasa.gov%2FNaturalHazards%2F&amp;q=agricultural+fires">lit by farmers</a> to clear their fields of debris, but a portion of them are <a href="http://www.glossary.oilfield.slb.com/en/Terms.aspx?LookIn=term%20name&amp;filter=flare">gas flares</a>-natural gas fires that emanate from tower-like <a href="http://petrowiki.org/Flare_and_vent_disposal_systems">flare stacks</a> on oil wells and rigs, refineries, landfills, and factories.</p>
<p>Some flaring is done as a safety precaution at industrial sites, but flaring of excess gas too expensive to capture is also common at oil production sites. Unwanted gas is simply burned as it exits the stacks, giving flares the appearance of <a href="http://publicradio1.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com/newscut/files/2013/07/174260790.jpg">large torches.</a> This photograph, taken by an astronaut on September 23, 2013, shows how gas flares appear as viewed from space. Two lines of flares that are part of the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Az_Zubair_Field">Zubair oil fields</a> in southern Iraq are visible. The flares appear southwest of Zubair, a suburb of Basra, as orange blotches of various sizes. The size and brightness depends on the volume of material being burned off.</p>
<p>Many of the flares near Zubair are among the 100 brightest in the world, according to a <a href="http://ngdc.noaa.gov/eog/viirs/download_top100_flare.html">database</a> maintained by NOAA's <a href="http://ngdc.noaa.gov/eog/">Earth Observation Group.</a> That database is built on observations made by the <a href="http://npp.gsfc.nasa.gov/viirs.html">Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite</a> (VIIRS) on the <a href="http://www.jpss.noaa.gov/instruments_interactive.html">Suomi NPP</a> satellite. In the image, the city lights of Basra, Iraq, and Kuwait City, Kuwait, are also visible. Highways appear as solid yellow lines. The shoreline is difficult to see, but the waters off the Persian Gulf are slightly darker than land in some areas. Other dark patches in the image are unsettled desert.</p>
<p>According to <a href="http://web.worldbank.org/WBSITE/EXTERNAL/TOPICS/EXTOGMC/EXTGGFR/0,,contentMDK:22137498%7EmenuPK:3077311%7EpagePK:64168445%7EpiPK:64168309%7EtheSitePK:578069,00.html">estimates based on satellite data,</a> about 140 billion cubic meters of gas were flared globally in 2011 (the most recent data available). Since peaking in the 1970s at about 2 percent of total greenhouse gas emissions, the amount of flaring has declined to less than 1 percent. As of 2011, the five countries that flared the most gas were Russia, Nigeria, Iran, Iraq, and the United States.</p>
<p>In Iraq, the volume of gas flaring peaked in the mid-1970s, plummeted between 1992 and 1996 due to the Persian Gulf War, and has increased since then. Iraq flared 9.4 billion cubic meters of natural gas in 2011. For comparison, the United States flared 7.1 billion cubic meters of gas. According to <a href="http://oilprice.com/Latest-Energy-News/World-News/Iraq-Loses-70-of-its-Natural-Gas-due-to-Flaring.html">one estimate,</a> about 70 percent of Iraq's natural gas is lost to flaring.</p>

An Astronaut Snapped This Image Of Huge Gas Flares At An Iraq Oil Field

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>Anuar Patjane Floriuk</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p><span>Anuar Patjane Floriuk won a prestigious <a href="http://www.worldpressphoto.org/collection/photo/2016">World Press Photo</a> award for the stunning image above, and he made it on a point-and-shoot camera.</span></p><p><span>The annual World Press Photo awards honor the most amazing photojournalists, sports photographers, and nature photographers working anywhere on the globe. Tech Insider will publish several interviews with 2016's winners in the coming weeks. Floriuk won 2nd prize in the Nature Singles category for this image.</span></p><p><span>We caught up with him to talk about his photography, his gear, and what it's like to shoot underwater.</span></p><h2><span>Undersea photography is incredibly calming</span></h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>Anuar Patjane Floriuk</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_left float_right"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>Anuar Patjane Floriuk</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>At 34, Floriuk has dived for half his life - starting when he was 17 years old.</span></p><p><span><span>"My mom was a marine biologist, so she was always like 'Oh, you should dive, you should try,'" he said.</span></span></p><p><span><span>He took his first classes in the fjords on the Norwegian coast, but spent most of his college years on dry land. He trained as a social anthropologist, and took classes on photography for ethnographers.</span></span></p><p><span><span>"<span>But then five years ago I discovered a group in Mexico [where he lives] that liked to do expeditions to special places."</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>He started diving again, taking every opportunity to follow the group.</span></span></span></p><p><span>"Sometimes you feel when you're diving this amazing feeling. You want to share that feeling. You want to keep that feeling," he said.</span></p><p><span>"So what I try to show with the photos is that state of total relaxation. Feeling totally at peace."</span></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>Anuar Patjane Floriuk</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>Anuar Patjane Floriuk</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Floriuk's evocative, mostly black-and-white images of underwater realms capture that peacefulness. And making them (along with some landlocked nature shots) is now his full-time job.</p><p>Unlike many nature photographers, Floriuk likes to include people in his images.</p><p>"<span>I am an anthropoligist. I love humanity. I'm very interested in the human being as an animal," he said.</span></p><p><span>"<span>And also, to avoid the human side of the image is like lying. You are never alone. You can take a photo of a lonely lion, but there's people around. There's always people."</span></span></p><p><span><span>That camaraderie is a huge part of the experience for Floriuk. Out on an expedition boat there's no WiFi or cell phone signal. Just miles of open water on all sides, unseen creatures below, and the fellow adventurers on the boat.</span></span></p><p><span><span>"It's a bit like Big Brother," he said. "You get to know each other very well."</span></span></p><h2><span><span>How he made his award-winning shot</span></span></h2><p><span><span>Floriuk wasn't even with his usual expedition group when he made the award-winning image at the top of this story.</span></span></p><p><span><span>In fact, he wasn't supposed to go along at all. His friend called him with just a few day's notice to say there were two spots open on a whale-following mission. He decided to go along, but didn't get his hopes up too high.</span></span></p><p><span><span><span>"You never know if you'll get to see them or not," he said. "You can know 'That's the area they're gonna be,' and you can hear them. But to see them is very, very, very difficult."</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>But about 800 kilometers off the coast of Baja California on the western side of Mexico, they spotted three humpbacks - a mother, a calf, and a third along for the trip. He'd never seen whales up close before.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>"<span>They were very comfortable," he said. "It was a very cool thing."</span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span>The massive underwater mammals ended up spending three days alongside the boat, giving Anuar nine hours of dive time to shoot thousands of images. The calf was learning to breathe from its mother.</span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span>Floriuk said the shot was entirely improvised. He was near the whales when they suddenly turned and swam right at some of the other divers. You can see the commotion on the water as they scrambled out of the creatures' way.</span></span></span></span></p><h2><span><span><span><span>Sometimes small is the best technology for the job</span></span></span></span></h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>Rafi Letzter/Tech Insider</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Underwater, Floriuk shoots with a <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Sony-DSC-RX100-Sensor-Digital-Camera/dp/B00889ST2G">Sony RX-100</a> digital point-and-shoot camera.</p><p>Now, the RX-100 sits at the top tier of shooters that will fit in your pocket with its f/1.8 Carl Zeiss lens and fairly large one-inch sensor. But it's hardly what you might expect one of the world's greatest underwater photographers to use as his primary device.</p><p>But the RX-100 is light enough to easily carry on a scuba suit, shoots beautiful RAW images, and at <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Sony-DSC-RX100-Sensor-Digital-Camera/dp/B00889ST2G">$398 on Amazon</a> it wouldn't be too painful to replace if it got waterlogged.</p><p>Floriuk houses his device in a specialized <a href="http://www.nauticamusa.com/news/?category=Sony+RX-100">Nauticam</a> case. When he wants to shoot wide he attaches an <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Inon--UWL-S100-DOME-Mount-52mm-Angle/dp/B00TZ1Y6RI/ref=sr_1_fkmr1_2?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1458241538&amp;sr=8-2-fkmr1&amp;keywords=inon+h100+dome">Inon dome</a> (pictured right).</p><p>When shooting nature on dry land, Floriuk's equipment choices get even more idiosyncratic.</p><p>For his more rugged adventures he packs a <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Sony-DSC-RX1-Cyber-shot-Full-frame-Digital/dp/B0097CXFCC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1458241787&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=sony+Rx-1">Sony RX-1</a>, the RX-100's bigger, pricier cousin.</p><p>At about $2,800, the RX-1's sized just a bit bigger than a point and shoot. But it's got the full-frame sensor of a professional DSLR with a fixed 35mm f/2 lens.</p><p>His favorite camera, though, is his <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Leica-Monochrom-Digital-Rangefinder-Camera/dp/B00X0LTT">Leica M Monochrome</a>.</p><p>Pretty much unique among digital devices, the M Monochrome makes black and white RAW files. There's no editing to be done - the sensor itself sees everything in greyscale.</p><p>Why would you want to limit yourself like that? Floriuk says the black and white device actually expands his creativity.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Anuar Patjane Floriuk</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>"<span>I think it's a psychological thing," he said. "Like, you are limited by black and white and you don't have to think about color. You are free of color. Color is always a problem. It distracts. Not only to the viewer. It distracts when you are taking the photo. So the moment color's not in my mind anymore, the whole way my mind works about the photographic process changes totally. You're looking differently. By discarding color, not having it in your hands, you totally start to change the way you think about a photo."</span></p><p><span>The fact that the M Monochrome packs Leica's film-textured digital sensors and ultra-high-end lenses doesn't hurt either. He uses the $7,500 device for street photography, and recently brought it on a penguin expedition to Antarctica.</span></p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>Anuar Patjane Floriuk</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p><span>Floriuk makes color images as well. But even when shooting on a color camera, he said he keeps in mind how he will process the image.</span></p><p><span>"<span>I mostly shoot black and white. Underwater is black and white. Street photography is black and white. Nature and landscape you need color for many photos. When I take the photo I know 95% of the time: This is going to be color.
