<ul class="summary-list"><li>Donald Trump is suing the Pulitzer Prize Board for awarding coverage of his ties to Russia.</li><li>The board said two independent reviews concluded the prizes should stand.</li></ul>In an overlooked lawsuit, Donald Trump's lawyers are exhibiting a habit from his White House days: Hunting for anonymous sources.In transcripts of four depositions obtained by Business Insider, Trump's attorneys had the opportunity to question journalists about a mystery that has vexed them for years: Who are the anonymous consultants who reviewed the Pulitzer Prizes awarded to The New York Times and The Washington Post for their coverage of Trump's connections to Russia?The depositions were taken last year for a lawsuit Trump brought in December 2022, suing the Pulitzer Prize Board, which administers American journalism's highest honors. He accused the board and its 18 members of defaming him by awarding the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting to The Washington Post and The New York Times for their coverage of Russia's interference in the 2016 election and the country's connections to Trump's presidential campaign and administration.In his lawsuit, Trump complained that journalists and the Pulitzer board conspired together as part of a larger "Russia Collusion Hoax," which the former president claimed was "fully debunked."In reality, investigations from Robert Mueller and a US Senate intelligence committee found <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-campaign-russia-government-contact-timeline-2018-7">numerous connections between Russian efforts and the Trump campaign</a>, even as they did not conclude that Trump personally fostered them.Much of Trump's lawsuit focuses on <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pulitzer-board-rejects-trump-rescind-awards-new-york-times-post-2022-7">a July 2022 statement from the Pulitzer board</a>, where it announced the prizes would stand after <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-demanding-nyt-and-wapo-journalists-get-their-pulitzers-rescinded-2021-10">Trump called on it to rescind the awards</a>.<a target="_blank" href="https://www.pulitzer.org/news/statement-pulitzer-prize-board-2">The board announced</a> that it commissioned "two independent reviews" of the work submitted by the Times and the Post that won the 2018 prize, which "were conducted by individuals with no connection to the institutions whose work was under examination, nor any connection to each other."Each review independently concluded the prize-winning stories were not "discredited by facts that emerged subsequent to the conferral of the prizes," the board said.To this day, the Pulitzer board has not disclosed who did the reviews and what they consisted of. Nor have its members explained why they are keeping the information a secret.Trump's lawyers are trying to get to the bottom of it. In the depositions Business Insider obtained, Trump's lawyers question the defendants — all journalists — about what they describe as their "use of anonymous sources" with the Pulitzer statement."Without identifying those individuals, I guess we have no way to verify the truth of the statement," Trump's lawyer R. Quincy Bird asked investigative journalist Katherine Boo in her deposition, taken in August 2023. "So Ms. Boo, I'll ask it directly, who conducted the external review?"At each turn, a lawyer for the Pulitzer Board members stopped their clients from answering.The hunt for the identity of the Pulitzer board's reviewers demonstrates how some of Trump's attitudes toward media — an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-white-house-bunker-leaker-treason-executed-book-2021-7">obsession with anonymous sources</a> and paranoia of supposed shadowy figures he claims to believe are conspiring against him — have leaked beyond the political arena and into <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/donald-trump-key-cases-civil-criminal-investigations-lawsuits-updates-2022-7">his lawsuits</a>.Chad R. Bowman, an attorney at the law firm Ballard Spahr, said in a deposition transcript that the identities of the people who conducted the reviews for the Pulitzer board were subject to "First Amendment privilege to protect sources.""I'm going to instruct the witness not to answer on the basis of First Amendment privilege," Bowman said in the deposition.Trump's lawyers indicated they disagreed with Bowman's assertion, but haven't yet filed any court motions asking the judge to force the defendants to identify the reviewers — a step normally taken when lawyers don't get the answers they want during a deposition.Marjorie Miller, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.pulitzer.org/news/journalist-marjorie-miller-elected-administrator-pulitzer-prizes">the administrator of the Pulitzer Prizes</a>, declined to comment on the lawsuit."We are not at liberty to discuss this case," she told Business Insider.The journalists whom Trump's lawyers deposed did, however, offer some characterization of the "consultants" who conducted the reviews. Miller, who sat for a deposition on May 23 last year, testified the people were "widely recognized as leaders" in American journalism.Boo told Trump's lawyers that she was not involved in the first review, which took place in 2019. She said she had confidence in the results of the second review, which took place in 2021, and took additional information into account."It was a person who had no relationship and person who had the stature and, I believe, ethical clarity and the moral rigor to be frank with the board should problems with those submissions be submitted," Boo said.<h2>The depositions shed light on the Pulitzer's secretive reviews</h2>Trump's attacks on journalism remain a pillar of his political message. In 2023, a PAC Trump controls <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/donald-trump-legal-fees-pac-donor-money-personal-cases-2024-2">gave over $260,000 in donor money</a> to Weber, Crabb, &amp; Wein, the law firm representing him in the Pulitzer case, according to a Business Insider analysis of disbursement records.The Pulitzer Prize Board is hosted by Columbia University, in Manhattan, which manages the small organization's payroll and offers institutional support. But Trump brought his lawsuit in Florida, arguing the state has jurisdiction in the defamation lawsuit because he lives at Mar-a-Lago.His lawsuit also points out that the Pulitzer board includes Neil Brown, a Florida resident who serves as the president of the Poynter Institute for Media Studies and worked as the top editor at the Tampa Bay Times.A judge overseeing the case blocked Trump's lawyers from issuing subpoenas for depositions and records for the merits of the case, allowing only jurisdictional discovery.The defendants — which include New Yorker editor in chief David Remnick, USA Today editor in chief Nicole Carroll, former Columbia University president Lee Bollinger, former Los Angeles Times executive editor Kevin Merida, and novelist Viet Thanh Nguyen, among others — all submitted paperwork describing their lack of connections to the state of Florida.<div type="image" title="marjorie miller" height="6602" width="8803" msid="108310028" hostid="261"></div>Trump's lawyers deposed Miller, along with three board members who served as cochairs when the 2022 statement was issued: Katherine Boo, New York Times opinion columnist Gail Collins, and Associated Press standards editor John Daniszewski.Those depositions were supposed to focus on obtaining information to bolster Trump's jurisdictional arguments. But his lawyer's questions frequently went outside those lines, Bowman complained during them.During Miller's deposition, for instance, Bird attempted to ask questions about how the Pulitzer board came to hire her in the administrator role."Counsel, I don't want to engage in argument with you," Bowman snapped. "I disagree that you can ask any question whether or not it's relating to jurisdiction because it has some tie to a document."Though the Pulitzer board members declined to identify who conducted the reviews, their depositions shed some light on the process.Daniszewski said the Pulitzer board had "engaged two outside consultants" toward the end of the tenure of the administrator who preceded Miller, the publisher Dana Canady, to consider "five or six complaints" about the prizes. Some of those complaints were about historical issues, and one was about Trump's complaint about the prizes to the Times and the Post."They recommended to the board that no action be taken and that the basis for the complaint was unfounded," Daniszewski said in his deposition.As more complaints from Trump rolled in, the Pulitzer board debated whether to conduct another review. Boo, Miller, and Daniszewski all said the board gets occasional complaints and doesn't always find them worth addressing, but the Pulitzer board took Trump's criticism seriously."Not everyone on the board agreed that the facts in the case warranted external review, and there was a debate, and the majority decided that it did warrant external review," Boo said.<div type="image" title="2018 pulitzer prize winners" height="3258" width="5570" msid="108310031" hostid="261"></div>Because Trump and his lawyers had explicitly demanded that the Pulitzers rescind the prize — and made a series of specific complaints in a series of letters — the board decided to commission a reexamination of the articles."Even though we believed that we had already looked at it, we thought we should do our diligence and reexamine the question because it was coming from him," Daniszewski said.The board members said that the people who conducted the two independent reviews of the Times' and Posts' Pulitzer submissions did not live in Florida, nor did they have an affiliation with the Times or Post. Collins said she recused herself from the 2018 deliberations for the national reporting prize because the Times was in contention, and had been recused from the subsequent discussions about independent investigations."You get up, you sit in the hallway for a very long time, but that's what I did basically," Collins recalled in her deposition, recounting the 2018 board meeting where they deliberated the awards."At some point, somebody opens the door and says come on back in, we've awarded the prize to 'X,' and then you come back and the next series comes up," she later added.<h2>Trump's other lawsuits over 'Russiagate' have failed</h2>Trump filed an updated version of the suit in December 2023, further arguing he was subsequently vindicated by Justice Department Special Counsel John Durham, who investigated the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/durham-special-counsel-report-fbi-investigation-trump-russia-links-2023-5">roots of the FBI's investigations</a> into the 2016 Trump campaign's links to Russia.Lawyers for the Pulitzer board members asked the judge to dismiss the case, noting that a different judge dismissed a separate "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/a-federal-judge-throws-russia-trump-lawsuit-fbi-hillary-clinton-2022-9">Russian collusion hoax" suit Trump filed against Hillary Clinton and James Comey</a> and issued nearly $1 million in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-lawyers-sanctioned-by-courts-election-lawsuits-2022-12">sanctions against the former president's lawyers</a> in that case."It is a petty effort by one of the most powerful men in the world to silence speech he dislikes, filed in a county where neither he nor any of the defendants lives or works or has any meaningful connections whatsoever," they wrote.The lawyers filed a separate motion for Brown, arguing the judge should dismiss the suit because the awards were simply not defamatory.Bird didn't respond to multiple requests for comment. Chad Bowman, a Ballard Spahr attorney representing the Pulitzer board members, directed Business Insider to court filings.<div type="image" title="donald trump at mar a lago florida" height="1875" width="2500" msid="108310032" hostid="261"></div>Trump has also previously filed separate lawsuits against the Times and Post in the United States over opinion articles about his 2016 campaign's ties to Russia, as well as a UK lawsuit against Christopher Steele, who wrote a dossier he falsely claimed formed the basis of Mueller's inquiry. All of those lawsuits have been dismissed by judges as meritless.Bird also demonstrated familiarity with the vast universe of media criticism about press coverage of the so-called "Russiagate" scandal. He asked about former Times journalist Jeff Gerth's four-part examination in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cjr.org/special_report/trumped-up-press-versus-president-part-1.php">the Columbia Journalism Review</a> of the coverage, which argued that the media organizations misused anonymous sources and withheld information in ways that misled readers. Daniszewski said he was familiar with the critique, and that Gerth was not one of the prize reviewers.The depositions sometimes touched on other subjects, such as the perennial debate of whether aspiring journalists should go to graduate school. While some of the four journalists obtained master's degrees, none went to graduate school for journalism."I will say as an aside, it is remarkable the — I guess the achievement of several people that we've deposed that have not gone to J-school have found themselves on the board is interesting to me," Bird mused in one deposition.The journalists also had a chance to reflect on the experience of being deposed."I appreciate your time," Bird told Boo at the end of her deposition. Trump's lawyers are hunting for the identities of secret consultants who approved Russiagate Pulitzer Prizes

"I can't even say it, let alone live in it."When Miranda Hobbes told Carrie Bradshaw she was considering a move to <keyword id="12079580" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="brooklyn" source="Orion">Brooklyn</keyword> back in 2004, her confession was met with horror. "Even cabs won't go there."This was the "Sex and the City" heyday of the late '90s and early aughts, when Manhattan ruled the New York City zeitgeist. Fast-forward nearly 20 years, two recessions, two "Sex and the City" movies, and a reboot of the show later, and <keyword id="12095049" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="millennial" source="Orion">millennial</keyword> New Yorkers have made Brooklyn, the borough once snubbed by Manhattanites, so popular that its <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/brooklyn-manhattan-apartment-rent-gap-history-comparison-2021-4">median rent is nearly as high as Manhattan's</a>.It's the outcome of a slow and steady rise that's ultimately solidified Brooklyn, not Manhattan, as the center of New York City's millennial <keyword id="11921347" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="wealth" source="Orion">wealth</keyword> and culture, according to census and property data, real-estate experts, and historians. As the borough's incomes, housing prices, professional opportunities, and cachet rise, so does the <a href="https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s12111-020-09499-y">displacement</a> of those who can no longer afford it. The coronavirus pandemic only accelerated those trends, mostly by millennials who, raised in the image of Carrie Bradshaw, have reached Henry status — an acronym for "high earner, not rich yet." Experts told Insider it would result in an even more expensive — and divided — Brooklyn."Brownstone Brooklyn is going to continue to go in the direction of the West Village," Thomas Campanella, a professor of urban studies and planning at Cornell University who wrote "Brooklyn: The Once and Future City," told Insider. The West Village is one of New York's most expensive and exclusive neighborhoods, with <a href="https://www.propertyshark.com/Real-Estate-Reports/2016/06/22/west-village/">PropertyShark dubbing it</a> the epitome of Manhattan <keyword id="12198336" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="gentrification" source="Orion">gentrification</keyword>.That sounds like a trend Carrie could get behind, but it took two recessions and uprooting the many waves of people who <a href="https://www.brownstoner.com/brooklyn-life/brooklyns-history-of-immigrants/">first developed the borough's modern economy</a> and build its cultural scene, from the Irish and Italian working class to Latin American and Southern Black migrants. <h2>Moving to Brooklyn has always been a milestone for the young New Yorker</h2>When Shermin Lakha, 32, moved from the Flatiron neighborhood of Manhattan to Williamsburg, Brooklyn, in February 2021, she was searching for a place where she could see herself living for the long term.After a decade, she and her friends had decided Manhattan wasn't it. They wanted more of a community feel and separation from the city. Williamsburg offered that, plus a short commute to the workspace where she works two days a week running the law firm she founded."It really comes down to being in a place we feel like is a home," she told Insider. "Not just those shitty apartments that I was living in when I was younger."Lakha was just one of the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/new-york-city-exodus-florida-temporary-move-migration-manhattan-brooklyn-2021-4">20,000 New Yorkers</a> who relocated across the East River in the first year of the pandemic, per US Postal Service data. Looking for an escape and unshackled from the office, these Manhattanites aren't so different from their 1960s counterparts who drove the first wave of gentrification in Brooklyn — intellectuals, artists, and writers also seeking community in the chaos of the Vietnam War."It was part of the counterculture movement of the time, the Woodstock generation who wanted something other than corporate America," Campanella, who was born and raised in Brooklyn, said.These boomer migrants were doing their <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-pandemic-shaped-millennials-adulthood-growing-up-2021-3">own version of adulting</a>, "buying up old buildings and putting their sweat equity into restoring them," Campanella said.<div type="image" title="brownstone row brooklyn" height="1634" width="2178" msid="90761919" hostid="261"></div>That's because, at the time, "brownstones sold for peanuts," he added — but he meant peanuts for middle-class New Yorkers. Consider the couple who <a href="https://www.brownstoner.com/history/brownstone-brooklyn-carroll-gardens-12-2nd-place-thor-jane-rinden-diy-renovation-brownstoning/">bought a brownstone for $28,000</a> in 1968 in Brooklyn's Carroll Gardens — that's about <a href="https://www.bls.gov/data/inflation_calculator.htm">$230,000 in today's dollars</a>, which is still way less than the <a href="https://therealdeal.com/2021/11/29/brownstones-rule-brooklyns-luxury-market-thanksgiving-week/">$6.75 million</a> that a nearby Carroll Gardens brownstone went under contract for late last year. These "brownstoners" displaced working-class immigrants and people of color, who had already built economies of their own in Brooklyn. It was the beginning of the borough's status as the poster-child for gentrification in America."Nobody foresaw the extent to which Brownstone Brooklyn would become a phenom," he said. "Once the artists go in, the culture vultures follow soon after, and that's the cycle we've seen happen again and again."The trend stuck around through the 1990s, when "yuppies" fueled a revitalization in the borough that <a href="https://catalyst.independent.org/2020/01/29/what-actually-caused-gentrification-in-brooklyn/">tripled home prices</a> over 30 years.But brownstone prices had yet to truly skyrocket, Campanella said: "Even at the peak of the yuppie boom, you could still afford a brownstone for way less than they cost now."<h2>Henrys make Brooklyn a global brand</h2>Before Miranda made her disdainful cross-borough move, Manhattan had been a center of art, culture, and finance for decades. By the turn of the 21st century, it had benefited more than any other borough in <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2002/05/24/nyregion/manhattanites-fared-best-in-new-york-city-in-1990-s.html">household-income gains</a>, and rents were soaring — studios cost <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2000/04/02/realestate/in-all-5-boroughs-high-goes-higher.html">31% more in 2000</a> than they did a year prior. Across the East River, Brooklyn saw one of the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2002/05/24/nyregion/manhattanites-fared-best-in-new-york-city-in-1990-s.html">biggest declines</a> in median household incomes in the state of New York.But as older millennials reached home-buying age after the Great Recession, Brooklyn's appeal started going mainstream.These young Henrys were ready to buy. But buying in Manhattan meant a postage-stamp-size apartment that most likely had co-op fees and strict requirements. Saddled with student debt and lacking liquid assets, they turned to Brooklyn, Nicole Beauchamp, a luxury global real-estate advisor at Engel &amp; Volkers, told Insider. "It was easier for them to buy a condo in Brooklyn and have a decent amount of space," she said, explaining that the co-ops of Manhattan also often required a larger down payment.<div type="image" title="high rise buildings" height="1628" width="2178" msid="90761921" hostid="261"></div>More jobs appealing to the college-educated also sprang up across the East River thanks to companies that put roots down in the borough a decade prior. It became home to growing startups such as Etsy and Kickstarter, and the millennial-focused media firm Vice Media moved its headquarters there. Real-estate developers responded with a boom in new high-rise luxury buildings. Rents started growing at a much faster rate than in Manhattan from 2013 to 2015, the StreetEasy economist Nancy Wu told Insider."Williamsburg was popping off," she said, adding that downtown Brooklyn had gone from being fairly affordable to all luxury in the past five years. Data from the real-estate firm MNS indicates that the mean Brooklyn studio in 2012 rented for $1,812 a month. By 2019, it had climbed to $2,323.<div type="image" title="Brooklyn Map" height="982" width="831" msid="90761923" hostid="261"></div>As Brooklyn's skyline and waterfront changed, so did its culture. The borough became a stereotype for the bearded, flannel-wearing hipster downing an IPA at a craft brewery as much as it did for "<a href="https://www.thecut.com/2014/04/15-years-of-brooklyn-fashion-mecca-bird.html">bougie boho</a>" Park Slope moms in their No. 6 clogs fighting for spots in <a href="https://www.thecut.com/2019/07/grace-church-school-brooklyn.html">thousand-dollar nursery schools</a>. Instead of slamming the borough, TV shows began to romanticize the life of the young professional Brooklynite à la "Girls," which premiered in 2012. Brooklyn had become a global brand, with new luxury hotels like The Williamsburg Hotel and The William Vale catering to tourists trading in shopping on Fifth for eating at Smorgasburg.Young Brooklyn residents of a certain set also got wealthier. From 2000 to 2019, Brooklyn's top 20% of earners age 20 to 30 saw their incomes increase to $70,000 from $55,200 (in 2019 dollars), based on Insider calculations using Census data from the <a href="https://usa.ipums.org/usa/index.shtml">University of Minnesota's IPUMS</a>.But as college grads and young families shuffled in, some neighborhoods <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2015/11/29/nyregion/gentrification-in-a-brooklyn-neighborhood-forces-residents-to-move-on.html">like Crown Heights</a>, which used to be predominantly Black and West Indian, continued to lose members of their immigrant populations. In 2000, <a href="https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s12111-020-09499-y">most</a> of the neighborhoods in Brooklyn's northwestern region, including Clinton Hill and Prospect Heights, were inhabited by a predominantly Black population, according to census data. By 2013, the majority of the area was white for the first time in nearly 60 years. Even those of the Woodstock generation who were <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2014/08/24/realestate/moving-out-of-brooklyn-because-of-high-prices.html">part of the original 1960s wave of gentrification</a> found themselves priced out of buying by the mid-2000s and moved away.<h2>Space is a status symbol in New York — especially during a pandemic </h2>As of July 2021, Brooklyn had <a href="https://www.census.gov/data/tables/time-series/demo/popest/2020s-counties-total.html#par_textimage_242301767">2.6 million residents</a> compared to Manhattan's 1.6 million. But most offices are in Manhattan, making it the logical starting point for young professionals. Beauchamp said clients used to choose locations to live based on the easiest commute. But remote work <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/remote-work-made-cities-bigger-nyc-san-francisco-metro-areas-2021-9">opened up Brooklyn</a> for more Manhattanites. Even Brooklyn residents moved farther out into the borough, she said.Clients would say, "'If I'm not coming into my office in Midtown, I don't need to live downtown — I only need to go to the park,'" she said, referring to Brooklyn's Prospect Park.Consider Lakha, whose hybrid work routine enabled her to find the neighborhood feel she wanted in Brooklyn. Plunging rents and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/millennials-upgrading-luxury-apartments-new-york-city-low-rents-pandemic-2021-3#:~:text=Millennial%20New%20Yorkers%20are%20piling,Brooklyn%20and%20Queens%2C%20per%20StreetEasy.">pandemic discounts on luxury apartments</a> made it all that much easier for her peers to do the same. But <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/brooklyn-real-estate-demand-prices-statistics-coronavirus-recovery-2021-1">Brooklyn was in such high demand</a> that landlords didn't need to offer much of a discount. StreetEasy data found that by August of last year, the median asking rent in Brooklyn had nearly returned to a pre-pandemic high: $2,600 compared with about $2,700 in summer 2019.<div type="image" title="brooklyn parents" height="1732" width="2309" msid="90761925" hostid="261"></div>Brooklyn also led the housing sales recovery, according to data provided to Insider by the real-estate insight firm Urbandigs. Homes were on the market for less time in Brooklyn, and the number of deals signed nearly doubled 2019's pre-pandemic pace. Manhattan was slower to catch up. Brooklyn was the one New York City market that "didn't miss a beat" despite lockdown, per the firm."It's always been a hot market, but in 2021, it really became the default market for a home" for first-time homeowners, StreetEasy's Wu said. The wealthy millennials who made Brooklyn the hot spot of New York City over the past decade ultimately made the borough rich in new money. According to data StreetEasy provided Insider, the number of contracts signed in Brooklyn grew by 316% from August 2010 to August 2021, compared with Manhattan's 105% growth. In the same time frame, the cost of rent for Brooklyn's luxury units (deemed the top fifth of the market) grew by 33%, more than Manhattan's 18%.<h2>The future of Brooklyn is divided — and even more expensive </h2>Campanella anticipates Brownstone Brooklyn will become even more expensive, exclusive, and sought-after."The great bifurcation of Brooklyn between the northern half and the southern half will persist," Campanella said, adding that the "glamorous Brooklyn where people drop $7 million" lies north of Prospect Park, and the "not-sexy Brooklyn" lies south of it. "If anything," he said, the "gentrification machinery" will embed itself further into places like Crown Heights.Wu doesn't think Brooklyn prices will fully reach those of Manhattan, though. Manhattan still draws investors who want to buy a home as a status symbol, she said, and will always be popular for its association with the historic and financial parts of New York. A <a href="https://propertyclub.nyc/article/brooklyn-make-way-manhattan-s-financial-district-is-nyc-s-millennial-hotbed">2019 PropertyClub analysis of US census data</a> found that while Brooklyn was home to almost a third of the city's 3 million millennials, Manhattan's Financial District boasted the largest share per neighborhood. <div type="image" title="alexander mcqueen brooklyn" height="1732" width="2309" msid="90761928" hostid="261"></div>But as Lakha points out, Brooklyn draws everyone from families to single entrepreneurs. "There's more of a chance to really get to know people here," she said.One might say Brooklyn's popularity has made it the new Manhattan, but Beauchamp doesn't think that's the case. She thinks saying Brooklyn is the new Manhattan questions whether Brooklyn was enough in the first place. "In the course of the last 15 years, I think it's opened people's eyes," she said. "People very much used to always think of New York City and only think of Manhattan. And there's so much more to New York city besides Manhattan."

Kang added, that it's not because they didn't want to have her there. "At the time that we had to lock these episodes, her schedule was still up in the air," Kang continued. "We have an episode that should be really cool for people coming up afterwards. We have epidemiologist from the Pentagon during the SARS scare [as] our onset doctor now."Reedus added that it's weird to be back filming in Georgia during the fall since they're usually filming the series during some of the hottest months of the year.During NYCC's panel, Kang said it took production a few months to get everything up and running to film safely. "Everybody will have masks and face shields and they've done the trailers differently," Kang said. "There's sanitation stations everywhere. There's UV lights and air scrubbers and things on the stages. There's a former military infectious diseases specialist who's our health and safety supervisor.""It's an abundance of caution in every way," Kang added. "We've had to think a lot about, 'How do we tell the story so they're satisfying and dive into character and give a little bit of adventure, but being really creative about how many people we can have in a scene. How can we show things while keeping people a little bit distant wherever we can?
