The archipelago had managed well the first wave of infections triggered by the arrival of nine returnees from Tablighi Jamaat's event in Delhi mid-March, with all 33 COVID-19 positive persons getting cured and returning home by May 10. Rigorous lockdown restrictions helped the islands stay coronavirus-free before the infection knocked the doors of the islands on June 10, when two persons, who flew back home from outside tested positive. Since then there has been a steady spike in coronavirus cases with flights landing here from different destinations. A total of 97 confirmed cases have been reported so far in the Union territory, out of which 45 have been cured, leaving it with 52 active cases, Director of health service of Andaman and Nicobar and nodal officer for coronavirus Avijeet Roy told . "Most cases have been detected among flight passengers arriving here from Delhi, Chennai and Kolkata," he said. Recently, a girl who flew back from Chennai after getting treatment for some other disease tested positive for coronavirus, the nodal officer said, adding seven of her family members contracted the infection from her. There are 18 Army jawans among those found infected and they are undergoing treatment, Roy said. According to sources, 104 Army jawans had gone to Nashik in Maharashtra for training and returned back here on June 20 by a special plane, and 18 among them tested positive for the highly contagious disease. They are residents of localities like Bathubastu Naushad colony and Broksbad. Some of their kin got infected after coming into their contact. Roy said the local ICMR laboratory is testing over 400 samples daily. Concerned over the rapid spread of the virus here, former MP Vishupad Rai urged the Union government to cut down the frequency of flights to the islands. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands had managed well the initial spell of the contagion when nine persons, who had returned from Tablighi Jamaat event in Nizamuddin in the national capital, were found to have contracted the disease in late March. They were immediately segregated and taken to hospitals from the airport itself. A male passenger flying back home from Chennai on June 7 later tested positive, while a woman, wife of a defence staff posted here, returning from Delhi on the same date was subsequently found positive. She had got stuck in the national capital during lockdown and flew back to Port Blair on June 7 by an Indigo flight. New Delhi, Oct 9 () A low-pressure area formed over north Andaman Sea is likely to intensify into a depression and move towards the east coast, bringing <keyword id="69024" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="heavy-rainfall">heavy rainfall</keyword> from Odisha to Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka and Telangana on Sunday and Monday, the <keyword id="6366970" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="imd">IMD</keyword> has warned. It said the low-pressure area formed this morning and is likely to turn into a depression in the next 24 hours. A low-pressure area is the first stage of any cyclone but it is not necessary that every low-pressure area intensifies into a cyclone. However, cyclones usually form in the Bay of Bengal and batter the east coast in October. Under the influence of this low-pressure area and the resultant cyclonic circulation, light-to-moderate rainfall is likely at most places with heavy (6.5-12 cm) falls at isolated places over Andaman &amp; Nicobar Islands on Friday and Saturday. From Saturday, rainfall will also lash Odisha, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Rayalaseema, interior Karnataka and Marathwada. COVID-19 strikes ten of the 50 surviving members of the Great Andamanese tribe

Port Blair, Apr 10 () Ten persons, who tested positive for COVID-19 after returning from a religious congregation in Delhi last month, have recovered, officials said on Friday.All of them returned to Port Blair via Kolkata on March 24, they said.They have tested negative and will soon be shifted from the GB Pant Hospital, where they are undergoing treatment, to a quarantine facility before being discharged, a health official said.The quarantine facility has been set up at a hotel here, he said, adding that they will have to undergo isolation for another 14 days.After returning on two different flights, they weretransported to the hospital directly from the airport as theyshowed coronavirus-like symptoms, and did not get in contactwith locals, officials said.The state's lone COVID-19 patient at present, a womanin her 20s who tested positive earlier this week, is recovering well, officials said.The woman was on one of the planes that ferried some of the 10 other persons from Kolkata to Port Blair on March 24. 10 COVID-19 patients in Andaman and Nicobar Islands recover

New Delhi, Mar 6 () State-owned power producer NTPC on Friday said it will deploy 20 electric buses in Andaman and Nicobar Islands and will also set up public charging infrastructure in the Union Territory (UT). NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Ltd (NVVN) has signed an agreement with Department of Transport of Andaman and Nicobar Islands to deploy the e-buses, NTPC said in a statement.NVVN is a wholly-owned subsidiary of NTPC.Under the project, the company is offering 20 GPS-enabled air-conditioned e-buses. Apart from deployment of e-buses, NTPC and Andaman administration are collaborating for setting up public charging infrastructure in the UT, it said.The company expects commercial operations of the service to begin by August this year."Introduction of electric buses in the island will go a long way in protecting the diverse ecology by completely eliminating tailpipe emission, low levels of sound from e-buses shall also significantly reduce noise pollution," NTPC said.The initiative will lead to an increase in overall usage of public transport in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, it said. Port Blair, Apr 19 () Three more people tested positive for COVID-19 in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, taking the total number of cases in the Union Territory on Sunday to 15, officials here said. All three are family members of a government employee, who was found to have contracted the disease two days ago, said Avijit Roy, the nodal officer for COVID-19 in the UT. A resident of Bambooflat area in South Andaman, the 49-year-old man had been keeping unwell since April 10. One of the three people who tested positive on Sunday is the government employee's wife. They are all undergoing treatment at the GB Pant Hospital here, officials said. Of the 15 cases reported in the UT, 11 have recovered. The administration in the islands has adopted the "pool testing" method using less number of kits. The new method involves testing multiple samples at one go, the officials added. COR SOM RMS RHL
