People have a hard time accepting the fact there are all-time greats right now, like Tyson Fury.</p><p>"Kobe Bryant was an all-time great. I knew that when he was alive and playing. But others didn't realize until he passed away."</p><h2>Canelo is disciplined in the gym and aggressive in the ring, Ali Walsh says</h2><div type="image" title="Nico Ali Walsh." height="1000" width="2000" msid="91319462" hostid="261"></div><p>For Ali Walsh, it is time to give Alvarez his flowers for the way he is establishing himself as the very best boxer regardless of what weight class he is campaigning in.</p><p>In recent years, he has scored wins from middleweight all the way through to light heavyweight to become a four-weight world champion.</p><p>"Canelo" returns to the ring Saturday for a 175-pound world title tilt against the current WBA champion Dmitry Bivol in an event that takes place at the T-Mobile Arena — a 15-minute walk from where Ali Walsh finished Ibarra with ease.</p><p>On what he thinks makes Alvarez great, Ali Walsh said: "The biggest thing I love about fighters is their discipline, and I've noticed with Canelo that he has that discipline. <ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="13758826" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="nico-ali-walsh" source="Orion">Nico Ali Walsh</keyword> scored the fifth win of his career — and it was an almighty knockout.</li><li>The 21-year-old is the grandson of <keyword id="12118324" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="muhammad-ali" source="Orion">Muhammad Ali</keyword> and said he's bringing his grandpa back to life.</li></ul><p>LAS VEGAS — <a href="https://www.insider.com/category/nico-ali-walsh" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Nico Ali Walsh</a> made his ring-walk to the sounds of Gangsta's Paradise by Coolio.</p><p>The stage was set for him to open the main card section of the Top Rank event broadcast on ESPN from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.</p><p>It is a battleground that many iconic fighters have excelled in, with Ali Walsh looking to forge his own name as Nico, rather than as the one that has followed him around since before his debut — as <a href="https://www.insider.com/category/muhammad-ali" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Muhammad Ali</a>'s grandson.</p><p>There were shades of curious <a href="https://www.insider.com/category/boxing" target="_blank" rel="noopener">boxing</a> ability Saturday as Ali Walsh boxed circles around his opponent Alejandro Ibarra.</p><p>He looked fluid in his approach, varied his attack from head to body and from body to head, and seemed happy to relinquish jabbing accuracy for the sake of effective power punching.</p><p>Two minutes and 51 seconds into the very first round, Ali Walsh separated Ibarra from his senses with a one-two combination that saw a thunderous right hand rattle his opponent's skull.</p><p>Ibarra was down, out, and the referee Russell Mora seemed like he didn't really want to even bother counting. He gave a half-hearted attempt then called it off. And I'm lucky for that."</p><p>The only time he felt pressure, he said, was before he made his first ring walk as a professional fighter. Nerves, he claimed, every fighter feels.</p><p>"The pressure of him being my grandfather is something I never felt," the novice fighter said.</p><h2>The youngster takes his promoter Top Rank way back</h2><div type="image" title="Bob Arum and Nico Ali Walsh." height="1400" width="2000" msid="91194296" hostid="261"></div><p>Inside veteran boxing promoter Bob Arum's office at Top Rank headquarters, which is a building the company owns approximately four miles south of the Vegas strip, there are numerous nods to Ali.</p><p>Top Rank is one of the biggest and most historic fight firms in sports.</p><p>In its 49-year history, Arum — the founder and CEO — has represented some of the most famous names in the business like Manny Pacquiao, Floyd Mayweather, Oscar de la Hoya, Sugar Ray Leonard, and, of course, Ali.</p><p>One large framed photograph remains prominent in Arum's immaculate office. A younger Arum stands shoulder-to-shoulder with Ali, the first boxer he represented.</p><p>It is not uncommon for business partners, boxers, and media members to take photos in Arum's office when they pass through Top Rank HQ.</p><p>The place Arum maneuvers them towards is beside a Karl Lagerfield-designed punching bag — one of only five in existence.</p><p>He stands next to the picture of himself, while the guest stays to the side of Ali. Arum has done similar even with Ali's grandson, Nico Ali Walsh (see above).</p><p>Without Ali, arguably the most famous name Arum ever represented, Top Rank, he claimed this week to reporters, may never have been what it has grown to become.</p><p>"I can't help but realize that so many years ago, when I promoted his grandfather in the first fight that I promoted, that without the support of his grandfather, I wouldn't be here today as a boxing promoter.</p><p>"So for me, every time Nico gets in the ring, it is something that really takes me to the start of Bob Arum as a boxing promoter when I first promoted Muhammad Ali," Arum said.</p><p>Regarding Ali Walsh, a novice who competes against Alejandro Ibarra at the MGM Grand live on ESPN from 7 p.m. PT Saturday, Arum said: "Nico is coming on. The genes are there, the ability is there, the determination is there."</p><h2>Ali Walsh loves boxing</h2><div type="image" title="Nico Ali Walsh." height="1333" width="2000" msid="91194297" hostid="261"></div><p>Ali Walsh, one day, wants to be known primarily as Nico, rather than Ali's grandson.</p><p>However, for now, he's all too happy to talk about who his grandfather was, what he represented, and what he means to the Ali family.</p><p>"My grandfather used boxing to change the lives of millions of people and that's why everyone loves him so much," Ali Walsh told Insider inside the MGM Grand ballroom just a day away from his fifth pro bout.</p><p>"Boxing is also my passion," he said. "I love boxing. I love the hard work that comes with it and I'm just looking to be the best just like he was."</p><p>The most important lesson Ali Walsh learned from Ali was not one 'The Greatest' delivered in the ring, but one he adhered to outside of it.</p><p>"He's probably the most recognizable person in the world in his prime. And even at that level, he treated everyone equally," Ali Walsh told us.</p><p>"He didn't look at anybody differently, he didn't condemn anyone, and he wasn't arrogant towards anyone. So if someone at his level can be that way then who am I to treat anybody any differently?"</p><p>Muhammad Ali is not the only boxing Hall of Famer in the family, and so Ali Walsh also leans on his aunt Laila Ali, a trailblazing 44-year-old former boxer who retired unbeaten with a record of 24 wins (21 knockouts).<strong> </strong>Laila is his mom Rasheda Ali's half sister.</p><p>"Laila used to give me advice, come to my amateur fights that were in Los Angeles, and understands the pressure that comes with fighting as an Ali," he said.</p><p>"People show up wanting to beat an Ali so they're able to say that they have. It is what it is. I understand what I'm getting myself into."</p><h2>Ali's impact remains massive as a young fighter markets himself as a spitting image</h2><div type="image" title="Michel Rivera celebrates after scoring his latest knockout win." height="1000" width="1500" msid="91194298" hostid="261"></div><p>An up-and-coming lightweight boxer at Premier Boxing Champions, Michel Rivera, looks — and dresses — like a young Ali.</p><p>He goes by the nickname La Zarza Ali, wears white shorts with black trim that say Ali on them, and is generating hype based on his likeness.</p><p>Considering Ali Walsh is a descendant of "The Greatest," Insider asked him for his take on fighters, like Rivera, who model themselves on his grandfather.</p><p>"I don't know who that is," Ali Walsh said initially.</p><p>When we reached for our phone to show him the picture above, Ali Walsh looked overjoyed. "He's a super fan," he said while smiling.</p><p>"When someone like my grandfather is as loved as he is still to this day, people want to dress like him. People want to look like him. People want to talk like him. People want to be him," he said.</p><p>"It's a compliment to my grandfather and what he did," Ali Walsh added.</p><p>"The way he spoke, his poetry, the way he carried himself … he was the grandfather of trash talk, and the grandfather of hip hop. He just had a swagger about him that no one else did at the time."</p><p>Ali Walsh has goals in boxing. But as one can expect from an Ali, they too transcend the sport.</p><p>"I want to be the best in boxing because that's what I love and that's what I've worked so hard for," he said. "But I also want to change the lives of millions of people just like my grandfather did."</p>

The American dominated his opponent before proposing to his girlfriend in the middle of the ring.</li></ul><p>LAS VEGAS — <a href="https://www.insider.com/category/shakur-stevenson" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Shakur Stevenson</a> broke the collective hearts of the Mexican fight fans who cheered <a href="https://www.insider.com/category/oscar-valdez" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Oscar Valdez</a> to the ring before trying to jeer the American back to New Jersey.</p><p>Valdez had talked to Insider and other reporters throughout the Las Vegas fight week about how personal this rivalry was for him. Stevenson had accused him of ducking and alleged that he was a cheater.</p><p>That emotion was felt throughout the MGM Grand Garden Arena when it was time for the ring walks, as the casino crowd generated the most raucous <a href="https://www.insider.com/category/boxing" target="_blank" rel="noopener">boxing</a> atmosphere the city had experienced in the year so far.</p><p>They left disappointed. It was not Valdez's night. This was Stevenson's.</p><p>The 24-year-old spoke to Insider and other reporters this week about how he regarded the Valdez fight — a junior lightweight world title unification bout — as his coronation as a pound-for-pound boxing superstar.</p><p>He didn't disappoint.</p><p>Valdez had his moments. He swung at Stevenson's body like he owed him money, determined to damage the super-sharp stylist's gas tank. But Stevenson stood his ground rather than box in circles, as he was confident he could throw and land numerous shots at will.</p><p>Stevenson used his southpaw jab for a variety of means — as a distance-measuring device, to keep Valdez away, and to tee up short bursts of shots.</p><p>Valdez said pre-fight that this style match-up would unlikely yield a war — more of a chess game. But if this was chess, it was fought with knights, heavily-armed, fighting in close quarters. It was as gripping as chess games can be.</p><p>Stevenson was leading, at least on Insider's unofficial scorecard, but Valdez was by no means out of the fight. He was live, capable of landing significant strikes — likely more significant than Stevenson had felt before.</p><p>But it was Stevenson who was banking the rounds. He controlled the pace of the fight, the distance the bout was fought at, and was the more confident boxer. After five rounds, he gestured to the Valdez crowd, and then to himself, as if to say that he ran this town, Vegas, the combat <keyword id="11893855" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="sports" source="Orion">sports</keyword> capital of the world.</p><p>At the start of the sixth, Stevenson had his breakthrough moment as he put Valdez on the floor. It all went down while Valdez was trying to attack. He kept his guard high, fired straight shots, and backed Stevenson into the ropes. This could have been a vulnerable position but Stevenson switched places, and countered Valdez with a right hand before following with an uppercut that sat him down on the canvas.</p><p><strong>Watch the sixth-round knockdown right here:</strong></p><p>From the seventh onwards, Stevenson mercilessly beat Valdez up. Valdez was in range, able to throw, but rarely landed anything of significance as the levels between the two fighters had been established. This was Stevenson's night now.</p><p>Stevenson increased the tempo, threw harder shots as if he was conserving energy for opportune moments, and snapped jabs at Valdez's skull, one-twos to the mouth, and left hooks to the body.</p><p>The chess game was no more. This was threatening to become queens against pawns. And Stevenson was pwning Valdez.</p><p>With few rounds remaining, Valdez needed to make drastic changes. But he didn't. Or couldn't. He couldn't get inside of Stevenson, who picked him apart with ease while standing right in front of him. The American showed that he doesn't need to needlessly move around the ring to avoid shots. He could do all that by standing in front of him while being far more economical with his energy reserves.</p><p>Stevenson had outclassed Valdez for most of the night. So, with 15 seconds remaining, he turned to the pro-Valdez crowd and owned them, too, by running around the ring just like he had ran away with the result, while making faces at all those who had booed him prior.</p><p>Confirming the result, Stevenson earned one score of 117-110 and two of 118-109 to unify Valdez's WBC world championship with his own WBO world title.</p><p>If that wasn't enough, he then got down on one knee and proposed to his girlfriend, who said yes — two victories in one night.</p><h2>Keyshawn shined against Sanchez</h2><div type="image" title="Keyshawn Davis." height="1000" width="2000" msid="91228520" hostid="261"></div><p>Earlier in the evening, <keyword id="13744050" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="keyshawn-davis" source="Orion">Keyshawn Davis</keyword> out-slugged Esteban Sanchez en route to a sixth-round stoppage win in the co-feature.</p><p>One of the most touted prospects in American combat sports, Davis — likened to all-time boxing great Sugar Ray Leonard by Top Rank boss Bob Arum — landed 157 of his 366 shots while limiting Sanchez to a meager 20 from 134.</p><p>After his win was announced, Davis paid credit to Sanchez by calling him a "great fighter."</p><p>He said that he thought to himself, "Whoa, he can fight!" in the very first round and needed to "snap into a different Keyshawn" as a result.</p><p>"I loved this fight because it challenged me," he added later. "I felt challenged in the ring. A star is born: Shakur Stevenson dominates Oscar Valdez in pound-for-pound boxing statement

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Another of Muhammad Ali's grandsons is following in the legend's footsteps by turning into a pro fighter.</li><li>Biaggio Ali Walsh, 24, makes his pro MMA debut at the PFL Finals on ESPN+ PPV on November 25.</li></ul><p>LAS VEGAS — When he wasn't bamboozling his boxing opponents in the ring or advocating human rights causes outside of it, <a href="https://www.insider.com/category/muhammad-ali" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Muhammad Ali</a> charmed children around the world with magic.</p><p>Ali befriended Caesers Palace hypnotist Jimmy Grippo, spent time with David Copperfield backstage after the illusionist's Las Vegas shows, and had a personal magic man called Terry La Sorda teach him tricks, <a href="https://www.reviewjournal.com/sports/muhammad-ali-excelled-outside-ring-with-magic-tricks-sketches/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal</a>.</p><p>One of Ali's favorite tricks was levitation — something he was able to keep doing long after he started to suffer from Parkinson's, <a href="https://medium.com/@martinjsmith/the-peculiar-magic-of-muhammad-ali-90dafd41ffdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">author Martin J. Smith</a> reported.</p><p>Few people loved Ali's magic more than his grandson Biaggio Ali Walsh.</p><p>Speaking to Insider by the training cages at Xtreme Couture MMA in Las Vegas, ahead of his <a href="https://www.insider.com/category/mma" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ultimate fighting</a> debut for <a href="https://www.insider.com/category/pfl" target="_blank" rel="noopener">PFL MMA</a> at the Hulu Theater in New York City on November 25, Ali Walsh recalled the legend of his grandfather.</p><p>"It's weird," the 24-year-old said. "I always looked at him as this icon when I wasn't with him, but when we were together he was always, just, my grandfather.</p><p>"There's this grey area of confusion," Ali Walsh said. "I watched his fights, heard his trash talk. He even told us Muhammad himself may have dabbled in MMA had the sport been as popular 70 years ago as it is today.</p><p>"He did have that exhibition fight with the wrestler Antonio Inoki in 1976," Biaggio said.</p><h2>Biaggio, a former football player, fell in love with MMA</h2><div type="image" title="Biaggio Ali Walsh, football player turned MMA fighter." height="900" width="1200" msid="95282506" hostid="261"></div><p>Ali Walsh was an accomplished high school football player and earned a male athlete of the year award from the <a href="https://www.reviewjournal.com/sports/unlv/unlv-football/former-bishop-gorman-star-biaggio-ali-walsh-transfers-to-unlv-1585839/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Review-Journal in 2016</a> after helping guide Gorman Bishop to the state championship.</p><p>After a brief stint playing at Cal-Berkeley in 2018, Ali Walsh returned to southern Nevada for a briefer spell with UNLV.</p><p>During this time, he had already become obsessed with <a href="https://www.insider.com/category/conor-mcgregor" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Conor McGregor</a>, who had peaked with his UFC featherweight win, his UFC lightweight win, and a lucrative foray into boxing for a landmark bout against <a href="https://www.insider.com/category/floyd-mayweather" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Floyd Mayweather</a>.</p><p>Once Ali Walsh called time on his football career, a friend of his took him to Xtreme Couture for grappling and kickboxing training — and the rest is history.</p><p>"I came here and I just fell in love," he said. "I kind of just dove into it and told myself, 'I'm gonna do this.'"</p><p>Ali Walsh is, obviously, a born striker. He's still an Ali, after all. However, he learned ground game, said he competed in a North American Grappling Association (NAGA) tournament, and won a match by triangle submission.</p><p>Despite competence on the mat, he still loves to punch. "I like to throw them bombs," he said. "I like to stand up and bang, like, to see what you got."</p><h2>There's a target on his back, Biaggio said</h2><div type="image" title="Biaggio Ali Walsh, Muhammad Ali's grandson." height="1334" width="2000" msid="95282508" hostid="261"></div><p>Any Ali family member who competes in pro fighting will have a target on their back.</p><p>It is something Nico Ali Walsh told Insider earlier this year, ahead of one of his knockout wins on ESPN.</p><p>Nico recalled his aunt Laila pulling him aside prior to one of his amateur bouts, to tell him that all pro fighters would be doubly determined to finish him in the ring so that they could tell a story about knocking out one of Muhammad Ali's descendants.</p><p>Biaggio, too, feels that target but uses it as motivation to ensure that when his opponents produce their best night, he also produces his.</p><p>"People are going to want to knock out my grandfather's grandsons," Ali Walsh said. "People are going to want to hurt me, and stuff like that, but it makes me want to be more prepared.</p><p>"This sport is 90% mental and 10% physical. So, I don't just train physically — I train my mental side, too. I talk to psychologists, I meditate, and I do all types of things that could help my mental game. And it's working.</p><p>"I know I'm gonna have a target on my back for my entire career — and that's okay."</p>

I want to stick with fighting the boxers."</p><p>Biaggio seemed bemused at the thought — not because of his brother Nico's reasons, but the weight differential. I miss him. It's been an emotional journey," Ali Walsh told ESPN after his win.</p><p>"I think me and [Weeks] made a little bit of history tonight. He's so undamaged whereas Kovalev lived badly, you know, and he got bashed up a couple of times.</p><p>"So Canelo's got to walk him down early and he's got to hurt him early, and if he does that, I think he could stop him.
